Publicolor Celebrates Carmen Herrera's First Ever Mural

Yesterday evening, Publicolor founder Ruth Lande Shuman welcomed guests at her home in celebration of Cuban-born artist Carmen Herrera. A mural by the 102-year old artist was recently painted by Publicolor students at New York’s public school MS 244 (New School for Leadership and Arts) in the Bronx. The art project was part of Publicolor’s mission to engage high-risk, low-income students, ages 12-24, in a continuum of intensive, design-based programs to encourage academic achievement, college preparation, job readiness, and community service.

Ms. Shuman articulated the importance of extending art-making practices into the lives of underprivileged children who otherwise would not enjoy the enriching joy art can engender. She said, “Our goal is to bring the power of visual beauty to communities who experience little of it.” New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viveritospoke on the significance of bringing art to all communities, including her own in the Bronx. The Whitney Museum of American Art, which recently exhibited Herrera’s work, sent curator Jennie Goldstein to speak on Carmen's late acceptance as a major figure in both abstraction and minimalism. Tony Bechara spoke about his personal appreciation of Herrera, an artist whose fame only recently reached its zenith.

While Herrera was not able to attend, she did remark: “My two great loves, education and art. They have enriched my long life. Having students paint this mural in a school, that’s a beautiful thing. A first mural and a first piece permanently in a school. I consider it a great honor to have been asked by Publicolor and I am so pleased with the results. My thanks to every student who has participated in this project as you have given me joy.”

Guests included: Frederick C. Anderson; Zulema Arroyo; Jeffrey Banks; Janna Bullock; Chus Burés; Bénédicte de Montlaur; Layla Diba; Adriana Echavarria; Nichoals Farley; William Haseltine and his wife María Eugenia Maury; Laura Pels; Gaetano Pesce; Pascale Richard, and Kathleen Elizabeth Springhorn.

Publicolor is a long-term youth development program that engages high-risk students in their education throughout the year with a continuum of design-based programs that mentor them for success in college, career and life.

Grand Neptune Ball

High Seas. Live Music. Open Bar. What else could you ask for in a celebration? Last Saturday, dozens of people made the trip to Red Hook, Brooklyn, for The Grand Neptune Ball - a celebration on the historic Lehigh Valley Waterfront Museum Barge. The festivity was in honor of the historic wooden barge, which is a nonprofit that raises funds for renewed arts and education programs.

Guests arrived in their finest Neptunian fashion, and partied like Poseidon all night long. The event featured light jazz tunes by Steve Oates and the Zac Greenberg Quartet. Local distillers Van Brunt Stillhouse and Widow Jane provided an endless flow of cocktails, to go along with mouthwatering hors d’oeuvres. The interior of the barge was filled with marvelous pieces of artwork by Bill Mensching. All proceeds from the tickets sales went to benefit the barge–the only surviving wooden covered railroad barge from the 1860s. Today, the barge acts as a museum, classroom, and theatre, all acknowledge to the work of Captain David Sharps, who founded the Waterfront Museum in 1986 to promote maritime history and its importance to the everyday life of the city, and the world.

Sharps had a history of living on the water. When he was studying theatrical movement in Paris, he lived on a houseboat on the Seine. When he returned to New York, David wanted to continue living on a boat, so a tugboat captain introduced him to the Lehigh Valley No. 79 Barge. When Sharps first acquired the historic barge, it only cost him $1, it came with 300 tons of mud in its hold and was grounded in New Jersey. The barge was eventually restored to seaworthy condition after seven years of restoration. The barge’s main attraction is driven in large part by proprietor Davis Sharp’s blend of compelling history and showmanship, turning the barge into a showboat. The great night was driven by Sharp’s enthusiasm and the painstaking care for the boat, which doubles as his home!

Since 1994, the Barge has been docked in Red Hook, Brooklyn and has become a landmark and a source of pride for the community. With spectacular views of Statue Liberty and the Lower Manhattan, the barge is the last enduring example of its kind afloat. However, the Museum is often overlooked due to its location at a more obscure part of Brooklyn. While most people today associate Brooklyn with the hipster kingdom Williamsburg, there are many other neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Red Hook, is a lesser known and even less traveled side of Brooklyn, due to it being isolated from major forms of public transformation. With surroundings of pre-civil war warehouse and shipping yards, Red Hook projects a waterfront vibe with a blossoming community of creative types. Today, despite having no subway stations directly in the neighborhood, Red Hook is a destination for New Yorkers from all over, and the barge is one of the top reasons.

The museum’s open hours are Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., though groups can visit on other days by appointment. There are also special theater, dance, and circus showboat performances by Sharps and his friends.

Special thanks to David and Stela. All photos courtesy of Jackson Krule

Help For Children Summer Sunset Social

In America alone, every 47 seconds, a child is the victim of an abusive circumstance.  This neglect impacts the lives of 3.3 million children each year within the United States.  Even more so, a staggering average of 40 million cases indicating child abuse are reported annually worldwide.  The occurrence of child abuse is a global concern and therefore requires the support of teams and individuals across nations.

19955909_1584804244886752_6573287716531455960_o.jpg

The HTC, or Help For Children, is a foundation connecting core solutions of prevention and treatment to best help children undergoing abuse. Together, Hedge Funds Care and Private Equity Cares supports the foundation in their efforts to raise money and provide grants to service nonprofit organizations.  The HTC  fosters partnerships between alternative investment holders to afford grants to treatment centers and prevention offices for children facing abuse.  As a multi-goal oriented organization, the HTC is also focused on philanthropic practices to increase awareness and prevention of abuse.

Help For Children has donated nearly $50 million dollars since their start in 1998 and now hosts over 45 events each year to raise money and continue awareness for children in need of support.  Their latest event, the New York Young Professionals Summer Sunset Social was held outdoors at the Inside Park at St. Bart’s.  The after-work social encouraged discussion between guests as they bonded over cocktails and hors-d’oeuvres.  The social was an opportunity to highlight the core mission of Help For Children and have guests become further involved with the organization.

Isolated or ongoing, any harm in the manifestation of abuse has the power to impact a child’s entire life.  The stress of suffering and fear associated with being abused at a young age can cause problems with early mental development and behavioral and mental health problems later on.

Grants from the HTC are directed towards counseling, youth assistance programs, and support services to children who have endured physiological and physical trauma to empower paths to healing process.  Their efforts also extend to organizations that provide resources to connect at-risk families with social services and offer children in dangerous domestic situations direct assistance.

Since its founding in 1981, Citymeals has delivered more than 54 million meals. Citymeals is the only nonprofit to focus on delivering nutrition meals to the city’s seniors in all five boroughs. Home-delivered meals provided by Citymeals enables them to age with dignity in their own homes and communities. More than 15,421 volunteers collectively spent 72,000 hours visiting and delivering meals to our neighbors. Through rain and snow, searing heat and bone-chilling cold, they trudge through the city lugging carts of food to homebound seniors struggling to get by.

Chef’s Tribute was the created in 1985 by Larry Forgione and Jonathan Waxman as a birthday tribute to James Beard, Co-Founder of Citymeals. Today, the event is much more than just a party. This year, the event raised over $840,000, which will support the delivery of over 114,000 meals. Most importantly, 100 percent of tickets sales and donations fund the preparation and delivery of over 2 million weekend, holiday, and emergency meals for more than 18,000 elderly every year.

This year the theme of the event was "Ports of Mediterranea,” a celebration of Mediterranean cuisine and culture. It drew over hundreds of individuals, including business leaders, philanthropists, gourmet fanatics, restaurateurs, and young professionals. Internationally renowned chefs who donated their time and efforts included Daniel Boulud, Raymond Weber, Larry Forgione, Marc Forgione, Michael Psilakis, Maria Loi, and dozens more. These culinary legends honored the flavors of Mediterranean as they created fabulous dishes at tasting stations throughout the plaza. Each booth was ornamented and fashioned to reflect the vibrant, rich, and the traditional style of countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Along with the marvelously complex variety of fares offered, there were also plenty of innovative cocktails, as well as live music from Noah Bless Music.

In a presentation to the audience, Beth Shapiro, Executive Director of Citymeals said “Our message is simple -- we are determined to ensure that no homebound elderly New Yorker ever goes a day without a nutritious meal delivered. Your presence here tonight makes this possible and we thank you.” When asked what her proudest moment with the organization was, a teary-eyed Beth said “No doubt, my proudest moment was our response to Hurricane Sandy. I had only been in this position for only twelve months, and we delivered 64,000 emergency meals, galvanized 836 volunteers, to walk up countless flights of stairs to make sure meals were delivered to not only our meal recipients but 10,000 other stranded elderly people. It was incredible, and I am incredibly lucky to work with the people that I work with.”

Mark Gusinov, Senior Vice President of City National Bank echoed Beth’s message by stating, “Every American deserves food security. This is especially critical today when anti-hunger programs are facing severe funding cuts. Your support helps organizations like Citymeals continue their life-saving operations.” With the leadership of Co-Founder Gael Greene, the annual event ensures that more than 18,000 frail aged New Yorkers will receive a nourishing meal, warm smile and friendly visit every day of the year. New York City is home to more than 1.4 million people over the age of 60. Due to the baby boom era, the city’s senior population is expected to grow 40$ by 2040. This organization needs support more than ever.

Partnership for Drug-Free Kids Presents All-Star Tasting

5ef81b6722e2ead2a6aafd28b8f40708.jpg

On Wednesday, May 31, the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids hosted their fifth annual All-Star Tasting at Chef Tom Colicchio’s Riverpark, one of Manhattan’s premier waterfront dining locations. The night celebrated the work of the Partnership in support of helping families struggling with teen substance abuse.

The Partnership was founded by a group of advertising professionals in the 1980’s when America was in the midst of a drug epidemic. The organization was created solely with drug prevention in mind but has adjusted to respond to the changing landscape since. Today, the Partnership additionally provides support for families and help for teens and young adults who already struggle with drugs or drinking.

The charity event kicked off with a VIP reception featuring Chef Jesse Schenker, owner of The Gander in New York City. Schenker, aside from being an executive chef, is also the author of  “All or Nothing: One Chef's Appetite for the Extreme.” He provided a special cooking demonstration during a private meet and greet with notable guests, such as the athletes from the New York Knicks, NBA Legends, WNBA players, and the New York Red Bulls, along with other celebrities.

Soon after, the remaining supporters were invited to take part in the main event--a lineup of samplings from some New York’s most prestigious restaurants and celebrity chefs. Stations included Atlantic Social, BLVD Bistro, Bona Bona Ice Cream, Craft, The Red Cat/Four J Foods, Fowler & Wells, Harlem Burger Co., Insomnia Cookies, Legends at Yankee Stadium, and macbar. Between tastings, guests enjoyed participating in a bid for luxury auction items. Specialists from Oasis Day Spa were also in attendance to provide guests with shoulder or hand massages.

The Partnership highlighted several guests of honor during the event. Chef Kyung Up Lim and Steve Millington were presented with the Culinary Spotlight award for their outstanding work at Michael’s New York, which serves classic American fare and features a beautiful sculpture garden. The Athlete Spotlight award was given as a tribute to the late NBA legend, Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins. Dawkins was a long-time supporter of the Partnership who was passionate about the mission of keeping children off the wrong path. The award was presented to his wife, Janice Hoderman, who graciously accepted.

The memorable night came to a wrap with some friendly competition--a sushi rolling contest between the Major League Soccer and WNBA players, sponsored by Haru Sushi. In the affair that saw incredible fare, worthy cause, and amazing vibes in a gorgeous setting, the All-Star Tasting was the perfect summer night out.

Publicolor's 2017 Stir, Splatter and Roll

On May 22nd at the MET pavilion, balloons swayed, paint flew and 1.3 million dollars was raised in the name of education. Publicolor’s annual fundraiser: Stir, Splatter and Roll was a resounding success. Publicolor, as the name implies, is a public foundation aimed at bringing art to NYC public school students. Ruth Lande Shuman founded Publicolor in 1996 with the aim to transform the often dilapidated schools into a haven for arts and creative independence. From this initial program numerous others blossomed to provide multi-year continuous learning for students.

This year’s annual Stir, Splatter + Roll Gala let attendees in on the artistic fun as well! With painting stations set up, guests we’re able to paint with some of the city’s most prominent artists and designers. A silent auction went underway in the background as attendees bid over the work of Christo and Mark di Suvero. The interaction between guest, artist and Publicolor student helped create a truly cooperative and vivid atmosphere.

The hum of the event was light and bubbly. Guests with a penchant for fashion and art could be seen stepping softly to the remixed tunes of the DJ set. Almost everyone, smiled, laughed and talked enthusiastically about Publicolor and the programs they were helping support. As best said by a guest “The atmosphere here is truly and beautifully colorful.”

In the end, Publicolor Stir Splatter + Roll Gala raised nearly 1.3 million dollars for its programs this year. Which means that NYC students will get another wonderful year of creative programs and scholarships.

The Tang Dynasty Ball 2017

Almost twenty years ago, in 1998, a simple fishing trip in the Java Sea turned into a remarkable historic discovery -- a ship that had been lost to the sea hundreds of years earlier, still filled with precious metals and ceramics. This discovery revealed that, as far back as the ninth century, societies of Southeast Asia had traded by sea as well as land.

The Asia Society of New York celebrated this incredible find with their most recent exhibition, “Secrets of the Sea: A Tang Shipwreck and Early Trade in Asia.”  This collection, featuring art pieces and cultural treasures that tell the captivating story of the earliest maritime trade in Asia can be viewed on display through June 4th.

The significant event was also honored on April 27th, 2017, at the Society’s Tang Dynasty Ball, where the serene indoor garden of the Asia Society Museum transformed into a extravagant venue. There, guests were regaled with the story of the ship’s travels from China all the way to Vietnam, India, and then the Middle East while enjoying a cocktail reception. Guests were then left to explore the pieces installed on the museum’s main floor while listening to a special performance by the Siong Leng Musical Association. The ensemble, who made their United States debut at the event,  played a beautifully arranged harmonic piece on traditional instruments.

As the night went on, the group continued to play as they led guests in a procession from the garden to the dinner room, where they were served a five-course meal crafted to parallel the intended route of the ship -- dishes from China, Vietnam, and the Middle East all made appearances. The evening continued after dinner for a lively hour of dancing and desserts. Co-Chairs of the event, Agnes Hsu-Tang and Oscar Tang, creatively captured the essence of the exhibition while hosting a tasteful night of celebration.

BCA 13th Global Food and Wine Experience

Black Culinary Alliance (BCA) is a nonprofit whose mission is to provide educational and professional opportunities for people of color (Asian-American, Native American, Hispanic, and Black) in the culinary field. BCA celebrated their 13th Annual Food and Wine Experience Friday, May 5, 2017, at the historic Guastavino’s in New York City. The much-anticipated event established a connection between billion dollar food service and diverse young talents.

This year, the event celebrated Hispanic leadership in the culinary field, with honoree George Carbonell of Empire Merchants being presented with the Vision in Wine Award. The award has been long honoring individuals who have demonstrated a dedication to building awareness and appreciation among people of color for the culture of wine through education.

More than 50 World-Class chefs offered some of New York’s finest food and wine talents to produce mouthwatering samples, including slow roasted BBQ pulled pork sliders, lobster mac spring rolls, and grilled Mediterranean bread pudding.

Attendees enjoyed these delectable bites with wine and spirits from around the world. Drinks from a diverse bunch of distributors were prepared--perhaps most notably, a Japanese Whisky cocktail garnished with burning orange peels.

The spectacular night ended with a raffle of prizes from various restaurants, caterers, and winemakers to raise proceeds for the organization.

NYSPCC Junior Committee Spring Benefit

On Thursday, May 11th, a vibrant hum encapsulated the FISHBOWL Bar and Lounge. Hosted at The Dream Midtown, the NYSPCC Junior Committee Spring Benefit saw another successful turnout. The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC), founded in 1875, has offered child protective and counseling services since its creation.

The annual Spring Benefit proceeds go directly to funding NYSPCC’s numerous prevention and education programs such as sexual abuse prevention, trauma counseling and educational programs. Participants who attended helped support these programs, making sure that New York’s children have the education and counseling necessary to persevere through any future traumatic circumstances.Departed from the traditional rendition of a formal Gala, Hors d'oeuvres were served throughout the event as guests mingled around the rotund glass fish tank (aptly giving the lounge it’s name; FISHBOWL)  A casual, playful, ambiance permeated the space with guests laughing and playing old-time skeeball. A DJ provided current music and kept the atmosphere buzzing as a silent auction went underway.

The silent auction served to add a comfortably interactive fundraising aspect to the jovial atmosphere, securing additional funds for NYSPCC programs. Silent auction items ranged from $95 to $1000+ dollar packages and included everything from Equinox classes to Penthouse Flower delivery.

When asked on the flow of the event, many guests smiled and cited the well organized and often fun atmosphere that NYSPCC events have. One guest elaborated further and commented, “ I always try to come to every single event, they’re well-organized and in amazing locations.”

From the free form atmosphere to the gracious open bar, the NYSPCC’s annual spring benefit was not one to miss.  Though fear not, the NYSPCC is sure to have another spring benefit next year! Be sure to come again around April-May to buy your ticket to support this wonderful organization.

On Thursday, May 5th, the Diabetes Research Institute held the DREAMS in the City gala at the astounding Cipriani 25 Broadway. The goal of the DREAMS in the City gala is to bring people together to raise funds for research to help find a biological cure for diabetes. Guests were able to place bids on items, or simply make donations of however much they pleased. After tasty appetizers and a few rounds of drinks, attendees were welcomed to their tables by the Master of Ceremonies, Chris Wragge, Co-Anchor of CBS 2 News This Morning and CBS 2 News at Noon. Chris introduced the event co-chair Samantha Shanken Baker, who recognized the significance of the event, which had raised millions dollars in the search for a diabetes cure. She fondly acknowledged the work and dedication of her co-chair colleagues Bonnie Inserra, Meryl Lieberman, Susan Weiner and Young Professionals’ Chair Lindsey-Inserra Hughes.

DRI immunologist Dr. Allison Bayer, this year's proud recipient of the Marc. S. Goodman Prize for Outstanding Young Scientists, spoke about her work.  The DRI has pioneered a technology known as islet transplantation, a procedure that replaces insulin–producing cells to normalize blood sugars. The DRI has had great success in getting people off daily insulin injections; some for more than 10 years.  The need for life-long use of powerful anti-rejection drugs has limited those who can participate to the most severe cases.  Now, the DRI is doing everything possible to eliminate these drugs, re-educate the immune system and offer cell replacement to all who can benefit.

Next to the stage was DRI Foundation President and CEO Joshua Rednik to introduce this year’s Dare to Dream Award recipients, The Besner Family, Greg, Leslie, Willa and Lana Besner from the Willa’s Wish Foundation.  Willa Besner, now 15 years old, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age four.

Ever since, she and her family have been committed to finding a cure. They put together a heart-warming movie that brought attention to the struggles a person with type 1 diabetes deals with on a daily basis and inspired hope for a cure. The audience had tears in their eyes by the end, when Willa told the audience she had hope that one day she would be able to identify “no longer as type 1, but type none”.

Chris Wragge began the first donation period of the night, giving seven minutes for everyone to use the devices on their tables to donate a dollar amount of their choice. Each guest was given a bracelet, and when donations were made, they would put the glowing bracelets on. In just seven minutes, the room was filled with glowing wrists and the screen displayed over one hundred thousand dollars’ worth of donations. The energy was incredible.

East Side House Settlement 18th Annual Gala

On April 13, 2017, East Side House Settlement hosted the 18th Annual Gala Preview of the 2017 New York International Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Center in New York City. The Gala was attended by over 1,200 people from a variety of industries across fashion, finance and philanthropy, all with the common interest of getting a sneak peek of the auto show before it opened to the public. The Gala Preview included a cocktail party, a dinner for benefactors, a silent auction and a live auction of the first 2018 Range Rover Velar; a mid-size SUV that combines elegance, luxury, and all-terrain capability.

Upon entering the Gala, guests were greeted by servers holding an array of delicious hors d'oeuvres and sparkling champagne. A cocktail party wouldn’t be complete without a premium open bar, and there were multiple fully-serviced bars spread across the floor for guests’ convenience. A photo booth was provided for attendees to take pictures to remember the event-filled night. New models of cars coupled with curators were on display with guests welcome to step into the car for the full experience. In keeping up with today’s current trends, guests were able to partake in Virtual Reality experiences made to replicate the experiences of being in the Range Rover Velar and Ben Ainslie Racing. The silent auction contained fabulous prizes that include art pieces, tickets to the 2017 American Music Awards, tickets to a Lady Gaga Concert, vacation getaways, and expensive wines.

In an overwhelming success, the event raised more than $500,000. All the proceeds will directly benefit East Side House Settlement, a non-profit organization providing education and social services throughout the Bronx and northern Manhattan.

The donations will help people in pivotal moments of their lives such as funding for college. Thanks to East Side House Settlement’s programs, 97% of Pre-K students graduate school-ready and 6,000 children and young adults are reached everyday through the program.

East Side House Settlement strives to give people the opportunity to better their lives through education and post-education services. It is one of the oldest social service organizations in New York City, helping nearly 10,000 people every year. Programs include early childhood programs, after-school programs, college and career readiness programs, and workforce development. In 2016, nearly 1000 at-risk students would not have graduated without East Side House Settlement, 70% of these students went on to gain college acceptance.

Support of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association and the New York International Auto Show makes it possible for East Side House Settlement to continue helping people through their programs every year. The Gala would not have been possible if it weren’t for the Gala co-chairs Philip L. Yang and Christopher LaSusa, along with the Benefit Committee chairs Samuel P.C. Dangremond, Stuart Orenstein, and Eric Wittenberg.

BARD 6th Annual Gala

In the 1950s, Detroit was America’s fourth most populous city, with 1.85 million people living there during the peak of the U.S. auto business boom. Now, In 2017, the population of Detroit has dropped to an estimated 720,000. Once the quintessence of well-paying blue collar jobs, the city declared bankruptcy in 2013, after the auto manufacturing jobs that were the lifeblood of the city’s economy had dried up. While the city successfully exited the bankruptcy, crime, poverty, and urban blight continues to be on going problems. In a city ridden off by far too many, there are pockets of people that are offering hope.

Born and Raised Detroit Foundation (BARD) is a nonprofit organization that supports education-based initiatives that contribute to building a stronger community and positive way of life. Since 2011, BARD has been dedicated to keeping Detroiters connected across the United States in efforts to support and contribute to the city of Detroit, making it a hopeful place for future generations. BARD is made up of innovative individuals who were born and raised in the Detroit area that are involved in promoting charitable and financial goals that support programs taking place on the ground in Detroit. In a simpler sense, they host fundraisers all over the country and donate the proceeds to some deserving causes.

On April 7th, BARD hosted the 6th Annual Show Your Love for Detroit event at The Bowery Hotel in NYC. Over 425 young professionals attended the amazing event, raising more than $40,000 for youth-based charities taking place in the Metro-Detroit area. In total, over the past six years, BARD has raised more than $400,000, donating significant amounts to non-profits, such as Detroit Youth Boxing Gym, Detroit Achievement Academy and Detroit Swims.  The night was filled with live music, an open bar and a remarkable silent auction. The guests were proudly supporting a cause that went back to their roots.

Detroit needs help. We can’t leave the next generation of kids filled with talent and promise to fend for themselves. Like the founder of Parker Lynch said, “Experiences that positively contribute to the upbringing of Detroit’s youth lie at the core of Born & Raised Detroit.” To help make a difference, join Born & Raised Detroit in its efforts to strengthen by raising awareness of the need for community support.

Youth America Grand Prix 2017

Lincoln Center, New York’s harmonious epicenter, and stage to some of the most acclaimed performances in the world, was the place to be yesterday. Last night, the beautiful New York crowd trekked to the Upper West Side to appreciate some of world’s most renowned ballet dancers. Ballet aficionados, parents, and celebrities alike all assembled at The Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater for the annual Youth America Grand Prix’s (YAGP) Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow Gala. This yearly event has become synonymous with the discovery of new dancers, and choreographers, featuring the performances of international ballet stars, while presenting the world’s brightest young dance talent

CBS’s Keltie Knight was the emcee for the evening, and she did an incredible job of pumping up the crowd before the showcase. The initial performances were a display of great potential by the stars of tomorrow, the young YAGP finalists, who put on a spectacle for their families and friends. The audience saved its greatest applause for the conclusion of the first act, where an assemblage of more than 200 plus YAGP dancers took the stage for a grand dance party.

Before the second act, the presentation of YAGP’s inaugural Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Bruce Marks, whose accomplishments as a dancer and artistic director could fill this article. Bruce was gracious in his acceptance speech and echoed a very important political message: “Stand up and fight for Art.” The second act began as the more established and world-renowned dancers took the stage and exhibited their world-class moves. Major ballet stars of today such as Svetlana Lunkina and Evan Mckie (National Ballet of Canada), Tamara Rojo and Cesar Corrales (English National Ballet), Skylar Brandt and Gabe Stone Shayer (American Ballet Theatre), and Tiler Peck and Zachary Catazaro ( New York City Ballet) all came to prance their pointe.

Following the splendid show, guests made their way to the promenade for dinner and socializing. Celebrities quickly filled the room as visitors scrambled to get a word in with their idols. A group of gorgeous women particularly caught the attention of everyone, especially the photographers, as camera flashes lit up their beautiful dresses. The amazing group of women were none other than Amy Astley, the honorary chairman, Marcella Guarino Hymowitz, the chairman, Samantha Boardman-Rosen, Colby Mugrabi, Candice Jordan Miller, Ashley Olsen, Mary Kate Olsen, and Lesley Thompson Vecsler who all served as co-chairs. Strolling around the room, there were many other major names such as Chelsea Clinton, Woody Allen, Nicky Hilton, and Tony Gonzalez.

From the amazing performances, to the sit-down dinner and dancing, Stars of Today Meet the Stars of Tomorrow Gala was a truly successful night. However, many young dancers are still in need of scholarships, and we cannot let the next generation of kids filled with talent and promise to miss out on this opportunity.

YAGP is the world’s largest and one of the most prestigious international ballet competitions, as well as a New York-based 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization. The mission of YAGP is to provide a global network of dance organization that provides scholarship opportunities and master classes for young dancers’ ages 9 to 19 around the world. The YAGP also holds annual competitions in multiple international and national venues that continues for nearly a full year. Each season, selected students from these competitions are invited to New York City to participate in the week-long finals. These promising dancers will receive in-depth mentoring and greater scholarship, professional, and performance opportunities. In less than twenty years YAGP has become an institution – not only for the esteem of its awards, but for the exposure it provides to young dancers to be seen by, and to make an impression on, representatives of ballet schools and companies from across the globe. Tusk Wildlife Gala 2017

Last night, the historic, New York City landmark Guastavino’s was transformed into a momentary mysterious jungle to host the 27th anniversary gala. The Tusk Gala is a fundraiser to support Tusk’s mission to conserve African wildlife, while at the same time empowering local communities by alleviating poverty via sustainable development and education. Tusk provides promising solutions to the crisis facing Africa’s wildlife.

For over 25 years, Tusk has been funding Africa’s most effective and successful conservation initiatives. HRH Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, has been the Royal Patron of Tusk since 2005 and has been a powerful advocate for Tusk’s work ever since. This year’s Tusk Wildlife Gala featured best-selling wildlife photographer, David Yarrow, honored renowned conservationist and Kenyan politician, Richard Leakey, award-winning Director Richard Ladkani, and Academy Award-nominated Director, Kief Davidson, for their production of the Netflix documentary, The Ivory Game.

Elephants are known to have tusks grow so large they almost touch the ground, yet, those beautiful tusks that makes them unique have also put them at serious risk. 100 elephants are slaughtered every day for their ivory. In fact, over the last 40 years, the world’s wildlife population has dwindled by more than half, and at the current poaching rates, elephants, rhinos, and other iconic African wildlife may be gone within our lifetime. The destruction of Africa’s natural resources have reached an unparalleled level due to the increase in illegal trades, rapid population growth. If this continues, the African wildlife will be in serious woe.

Tusk devotes resources in three areas to protect Africa’s wildlife. The first element provides the first line of defense by providing rangers on the ground to fight against poachers. The second element is an education program which have already reached over 350,000 children. By offering knowledge and new career paths, the next generation of kids will come to cherish the wildlife and become part of the solution. The third element is community development and income generating programs. Tusk’s programs provides employment to many people convincing local communities to realize the value of their natural resources.

The evening started off with a cocktail hour, and guests mingled while the silent auction offered up some great items to practice bidding before the live auction during dinner. After admiring some beautiful people arriving on the red carpet, we were ushered to take our seats for dinner. I was lucky enough to be placed at a wonderful table with the loveliest women. They shared with me so many wonderful stories and had me at all smiles the whole night. The ladies were even generous enough to donate a few of their jewelry pieces from their company, Gustav Manz, for the silent auction. I am so glad and honored to have been at the table with such extraordinary people.

The Legacy Award recipient and honoree of the night was Richard Leakey, who was recognized for his tireless conservation efforts that reduced poaching in Kenya. Leakey first gained worldwide fame for discovery of a nearly complete 1.6-million-year-old skeleton of a homo erectus youth, a pioneering contribution to the study of the evolutionary biology. In addition, this year’s Game Changer Award was also given to Richard Ladkani and Kief Davidson in acknowledgment of their Oscar shortlisted Netflix film The Ivory Game. Leakey and Jane Goodall could not be there, but delivered their message by video, both offered their voices to better the world. Every speaker’s speech resonated with impact, but when Tusk founder and President Charlie Mayhew said “It’s now or never,” it really summed up the urgency of the issue.

From major pieces of art by David Yarrow to incredible Safari trips, the amazing auctioneer from Sotheby’s had the crowd raising their bids from table to table during the live auction. The dinner smoothly transitioned into a celebratory party, featuring a safari photo booth complete with binoculars and safari hats. The guests got on the dance floor and swayed the night away to the feel-good music courtesy of DJ Flo.

An evening of altruism and awareness, the night at the gala proved to be an eye-opening occasion of conversations about conservation and what we can do to change the lives of the people and endangered animals that call Africa home.

From the cocktail hour to the sit-down dinner to after party, Tusk's wildlife gala was packed with moments to reminisce and thought-provoking wisdom we'll never forget. African wildlife are a symbol of the natural world, yet only a fragment of that remains, and it is crucial that we all do our part to help. Congratulations to Tusk Gala for another extraordinary night. For more information and how to donate to Tusk, click here.

Lincoln Center Young Patrons Gala

On the night of November 28, 1966, guests dressed in gowns of black and white concealed their identity in true masquerade fashion and celebrated in the ballroom of New York’s Plaza Hotel. Only 480 invitations were sent out in the mail, offering acceptance to only the most distinguished guests. The event? Truman Capote’s illustrious Black and White Ball, held to honor the city’s media heiress of the time, Katherine Graham. On March 2nd, The Young Patrons of Lincoln Center invited guests to partake in a re-imagining of Capote’s legendary night to celebrate the performing arts center and its dedicated members.

The night was filled with lively entertainment, cocktails, and special guest performances. Masks were encouraged and attire was specified to “black and white festive” alluding to the Black and White Ball of the past. Floor length gowns and suits of black tie’s best graced the hardwood floor of the ballroom in tribute. Famed DJ set from Hannah Bronfman and Brendan Fallis had the guests dancing the night away.

The Angel Orensanz Center remains a spacious, architectural masterpiece, the perfect venue for a masquerade ball.  The space still resembles the original 19th century construction, transporting guests back to a feeling of true historical masquerade celebration. The lighting of the place illuminated a misty glow of purple and blue, an ambiance extenuated by stained glass and the interior detail of the former synagogue.

Guests danced, laughed, and mingled until the clock struck 11. A photo booth and red carpet prompted both fun and serious photo taking, capturing memories sure to last. From the start of the party to when it was time to grab coats, smiles stretched as far as the dance floor.

The NYLON Project

The prominence of homelessness affects individuals and families within cities and communities nationwide.  Specifically, New York City has experienced a devastating 115 percent increase in homelessness in just the past twenty years.  The NYLON Project is a new initiative aimed to unify and encourage positive change within the metropolitan and the homeless community.  Jordana Guimaraes, the founder of the NYLON Project, understands the project might not be the solution, but it is a huge step in the right direction.

The project will utilize social media to create a platform of experiences, messages and personal journeys by using the tag #ItCanBeYou.  The intention of the tag is for everyone to share their connection to homelessness and any community involvement in aiding this demographic.  This campaign will demonstrate the reality of homelessness and the difference in decision-making that could avoid or lead to a life without a home.  The focus is to create an understanding of the circumstances that caused these individuals to become homeless and to eliminate judgment of their situations.

Influencers and celebrities have come together to spread awareness of the issue and committed their time to inspire change.  Christina Milian and Jenni Farley (JWOWW) are just two of the twenty-five influencers who have dedicated their time in speaking out on behalf of the NYLON Project.

To launch the initiative, the NYLON Project hosted a New York Fashion Week event on February 7, 2017 at The Delancey.  Guests enjoyed networking and live performances from the band FAULKNER, singer Che’Nelle, and The Voice season 11 contestant, Wé McDonald.  A runway show highlighted the personal stories of homeless members within the New York community.  All twenty-five influencers involved with the campaign modeled in the show, carrying cardboard signs with messages from homeless people written in black ink.  The attire from the fashion show was sponsored by many chic brands including Anje Clothing, Belle Fare, Fair Harbor, JayDee, Eternal Springs, SCRD, Wild Mantle, SoFrancisco, Karli Buxton, The Valencia, Mana Made Jewelry, Lonewolf Collective, HERO New York, Conscious Step, Mr. Custom Made, ARMARIUM, House of Eleven and Alkemi Collective.

The launch was an immense success and the NYLON Project is officially active in the movement to end homelessness.  The focus will start with the New York City community and hopefully will soon touch lives worldwide.

Operation: Heal Our Heroes 3rd Annual Call to Arms Gala

In October of 2014, two men, Patrick Bolchoz and former Army Captain Everett Weston, formed Heal our Heroes in commemoration of the life and dedication of service of their dear friend, Captain Francis “Franky” Kim. Captain Kim served the United States Army in Afghanistan and was later relocated to Washington as a Rear Detachment Commander. His duty was to deliver flags to the families of the fallen within his own unit. Patrick Bolchoz spoke with us on behalf of the allegiance of his best friend, explaining Franky felt he should have still been stationed alongside his unit. A year before the founding of Heal our Heroes, Franky took his own life. The spirit of Captain Franky Kim and his selfless commitment to our country became the inspiration behind Heal our Heroes.

Patrick Bolchoz and Everett Weston crossed paths for the first time at Franky’s funeral. The connection was instant and their lives seemed to “collide in every positive way,” as described by Bolchoz. The idea for Heal our Heroes evolved from the desire to keep Franky’s spirit alive. With mutual friends and business partners, plans fell into place and the organization gained an immediate, positive response.

Heal our Heroes brings a sometimes forgotten and often unspoken aspect of military service to the forefront.  Returning veterans are not always able to leave behind the vividness of their experience. Service-related Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder maintains a psychological connection between our veterans and their involvement while deployed. PTSD has influenced a suicide epidemic, taking the lives of nearly 20 veterans per day- a number that has fallen from 22 since the start of the organization in 2014 and a significant stride in their effort to decrease the PTSD-related suicide rate.

Through continuous advocacy, awareness campaigning, and the raising of resources, Heal our Heroes is able to provide veterans with accessible mental health care services.  For every $5,000, a veteran suffering from PTSD and other trauma-related stress will receive a lifetime of professional care and support.  Awareness is crucial in tackling the epidemic as the issue is, “under-sourced, oversubscribed, and quite frankly forgotten,” as explained by Bolchoz.

On December 2, Heal our Heroes celebrated their 3rd annual fundraising event in the Metropolitan Pavilion. Guests enjoyed live performances, complimentary cocktails, and food catered by ANEU catering & events. Donations could be made through the silent auction and raffle. Every event was centered around raising awareness for our nation’s veterans and the prevalent reality of service-related Post-Traumatic Stress. The heart and soul of Captain Franky Kim is remembered through Heal our Heroes as they strive to improve the lives and health of veterans after deployment.

A very special thank you to Patrick Bolchoz for taking the time to speak with us. And another special thank you to Hubb House PR for inviting us.
