Publicolor's SS+R 2018

anniewatt_66170-Table 5.jpg

Publicolor celebrated its 22nd Anniversary at their annual gala, Stir Splatter + Roll on April 23 at the Metropolitan Pavilion. The evening’s colorful cocktail hour began at 6pm with 18 painting stations where guests participated with some of NYC’s leading artists, designers, and architects to create customized works of art.

Publicolor honored longtime supporter Chris Ward (AECOM VP and CEO, Metro New York, and former Executive Director of Port Authority),  who attended with his family, along with groundbreaking composer Philip Glass, with the Catalyst for Change Award who performed at the benefit.

While working from the Port Authority, Ward was instrumental to secure Publicolor's 2002 community revitalization project, The Painted Promenade. Students in the Publicolor program, from high schools across the City, painted a bridge on West 39th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues in sunshine yellow and turquoise blue. Sixteen years later, the colorfully painted walls have become a fixture in Hell's Kitchen (and the backdrop to the famed Hell's Kitchen Flea Market), thanks to Ward.

“It's always a joy to celebrate our students who are succeeding despite the enormous challenges of poverty- homelessness, food insecurity, lack of good role models or advocates, neglect," said Ruth Lande Shuman, President of Publicolor. "They are realizing their potential - graduating high school, graduating college, and giving back to their communities by painting joy, respect, dignity and safety in under-resourced neighborhood facilities like health clinics, shelters, childcare centers, and community centers. They inspire us every day!”

PUBLICOLOR BY NUMBERS Unlike many other youth organizations that focus on high-achieving, low-income students, Publicolor deliberately focuses on low-income students who are at high risk of dropping out of school. Publicolor’s project-based learning model succeeds in engaging them in their education and empowers them with skills for success in school, work, and life despite many challenges of poverty.

ABOUT PUBLICOLOR’S FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF PUBLICOLOR RUTH LANDE SHUMAN:

A dynamic and passionate innovator, Ruth Lande Shuman is an award-winning industrial designer and Founder/President of Publicolor. Ms. Shuman has been deeply committed to community- based volunteer work for over thirty years, most notably as a founding trustee of the Big Apple Circus, where she served as Trustee Emerita. She was also a board member of the Wiltwyck school’s union-free school, a board member of the Rowena Reed Kostellow Fund at Pratt Institute, a board member of The Kitchen, and was the Mayor’s representative to the board of the Museum of Art & Design in New York City. Ms. Shuman founded Publicolor in 1996 to use color, collaboration, design, and the discipline of the commercial painting to engage at- risk students in their education, targeting the most underserved communities, most underperforming schools and most seriously disadvantaged middle and high school students. Most recently, Ms. Shuman has been recognized by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) as an Honorary Fellow and also named a “Living Landmark” by the New York Landmarks Conservancy.

ABOUT PUBLICOLOR:

Publicolor fights poverty by aggressively addressing the alarming dropout rate and low levels of educational attainment and youth employment in New York City. They do this by engaging high- risk students, ages 12-24, in a long-term continuum of intensive, multi-day, design-based programs to encourage academic achievement, community service, college preparation and job readiness. Their unique applied learning approach uses design and design thinking as vehicles to engage, stimulate and inspire at-risk, low-performing students in our city’s struggling middle and high schools, empowering them to achieve success in school, college, career and life. For more information about Publicolor, go to: http://publicolor.org/

Billion Oyster Party 2018

26963351257_17dc7c18b0_o.jpg

The oyster party of the year went down again in Red Hook on April 27th when the New York Harbor School’s Billion Oyster Project threw its annual fundraiser bash. Once again, NY Waterway provided a complementary and convenient ferry ride from Pier 11 to Red Hook for guests to arrive at the party in style. Upon arrival, attendees packed the spacious Pioneer Works for the ultimate oyster experience. The amazing experience offered its guests to try oysters from over 50 oyster farms, dishes from 20 chefs, and uncountable good moments. To date, Billion Oyster Project has restored 25 million oysters to NY Harbor. Throughout the night, over 30,000 oyster shells were collected, which will return to NY Harbor to help restore oyster reefs.

40957215255_193dea2a99_o.jpg

Attendees washed down the oysters with brews, sodas, spirits and wines from local partners while watching the BOP All-Star Shucking Championship. Guests also got the chance to speak to NY Harbor School students about their work on the project. Not only did the chefs serve their best fairs, each of the growers also spoke about their experiences being pioneers in this emerging industry. Like any incipient industry there are hurdles, however, each one spoke ardently about the business and their campaigns for future growth.

This annual party is just a step towards the final goal of restoring 1 billion oysters by 2035 while fostering the next generation of environmental stewards and reconnecting New Yorkers to the waterfront. Proceeds from the event will support the four program areas of the Billion Oyster Project: Oyster Production, Reef Construction & Monitoring, Shell Collection, BOP Schools, and Public Engagement. Each program stands alone as an important advance in ecosystem restoration and public education. Together they make up the Harbor and City-wide project that will have a dramatic impact on ecosystem health as well as public awareness, understanding and appreciation of NY Harbor.

All in all, this year’s party, which was the largest one to date, was both an unforgettable experience and a highly educational event. After experiencing all that the Billion Oyster Party had to offer, guests absolutely left feeling upbeat, pleasantly full from incredible food, and informed on an incredible mission. It was the perfect way to start Spring.

Taste of the Nation NYC 2018

40755480325_68abbd3d29_o.jpg

Food events are common nowadays, but on April 18th, one of the most anticipated annual food events brought all the foodies to Brooklyn Expo Center in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Each Spring and Summer, the country’s hottest chefs, sommeliers and mixologists join together to donate their time, talent and passion, with one goal in mind: ending childhood hunger in America by supporting Taste of the Nation for No Kid Hungry presented by Citi and Sysco.

41698932692_f369646bd7_o.jpg

Here in New York, 1 in 5 kids struggle with hunger. Only 47% of kids who eat free/reduced price school lunch also eat school breakfast, and only 31% of kids who eat free/reduced price school also eat summer meals. That being said, No Kid Hungry have made huge strides in New York City. Working with the Mayor's Office, the department of Education, community leaders, teachers, and corporate partners to overcome barriers, No Kid Hungry has helped schools modernize the way they serve breakfast. This April, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a state budget that includes a requirement for all "high needs" public schools - those with 70% and higher free and reduced-price student population - to offer Breakfast After the Bell. Over the next few years, this bill will impact tens of thousands of kids at risk of hunger across New York State.

41647254761_26b62a765e_o.jpg

Widely considered a wonderful celebration that brings entire communities together to enjoy the best of what your city has to offer in food, drinks and fellowship. With nearly 40 events in 20 cities across the nation, guests of Taste of the Nation gets to sip and sample gourmet creations from each city’s premier culinary talent and participate in unique food, travel and lifestyle auctions – all while supporting a good cause.

41698930382_1e9cd682ef_o.jpg

In addition to hosting wonderful food events, Taste of the Nation also brings together top talents in the music industry to perform on its special event stages. This year’s NYC event was definitely no different, with a special performance by the rock hitmakers, X Ambassadors. X Ambassadors, provided a live soundtrack featuring some of their biggest hits - Renegade and Unsteady, to an evening of unforgettable gastronomic creations.

On April 10th, 2018, EL Education, a leading K-12 nonprofit that is transforming schools in diverse communities across the country, hosted its 25th Anniversary Gala at the landmarked 583 Park Avenue in New York City.

Alex Tom James

EL Education (formerly Expeditionary Learning) was launched 25 years ago when a group of educators from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Outward-Bound USA won the New American Schools national competition for school designs that “break the mold.” Today, the organization partners with hundreds of public schools across 35 states, reaching more than a million students across America, to help them succeed as engaged students and active citizens. EL Education's Network of Schools generates remarkable outcomes, with 100% college acceptance rate as the standard.

IMG_0941.jpg

The event started with a cocktail hour in the lower level of the iconic venue. Guests enjoyed an exquisite open bar and savory hor d'oeuvres, such as lamb chops and pigs in a blanket. After mix and mingling, patrons were invited upstairs to the grand ball room for the start of the program and dinner.

The pride of the program’s success – the students, were on full display. The event was hosted by EL Education graduates Elena Fulton and Ameerah Rollins. The two young ladies were natural on stage - keeping their points short and precise, while hitting all the key notes. Four extraordinary 12th grade students from WHEELS (Washington Heights Expeditionary Learning School in New York) also took center stage and presented their stories on how EL changed their lives for the better. “We are EL,” was the central message in all their stories, expressing appreciation for the program that allowed them to be their best selves and lift their peers and communities, ensuring success for all.

This year, the Gala honored its Founding President Greg Farrell for his lifelong commitment to make schools more engaging, effective, and joyous. Mr. Farrell served as President and CEO of the organization from its founding until 2008, but he continues to serve on its Board of Directors. In an emotional speech, Greg thanked all the people who paved the way for the program.

The Gala program also featured remarks by National Teacher of the Year, Sydney Chaffee, a 9th grade Humanities teacher at Codman Academy Charter Public School, an EL Education school in Boston. At the heart of EL Education are their extraordinary teachers - men and women who fulfill their highest aspirations so that the students achieve more than they think is possible. EL works with teachers in all settings to build their capacity to ignite student’s motivation, persistence, and compassion so they become active contributors to building a better world and succeed in school, college, career, and life. Teachers and staff in EL schools don't just believe in the value of their approach; they verify it. Sydney echoed this message with her final words to the guests:  “What our country needs right now are people who can listen with empathy, write with evidence, speak with clarity and act with conviction and love, then you believe in EL Education.”

About EL Education

For over 25 years, EL Education has been bringing to life a three-dimensional vision of student achievement that includes mastery of knowledge and skills, character, and high-quality student work. EL Education works with hundreds of public schools—both district and charter—across 35 states, serving over 200,000 students and 16,000 teachers. The Parkinson’s Foundation hosted its 11th Annual Celebrate Spring New York event on Wednesday, April 11 at Lavo, New York City. More than 400 New Yorkers gathered at the famed night club for a night of partying and charity. It was truly an inspirational evening where family and friends came together, raising an outstanding $200,000, to bring awareness for a disease that affects the entire community and not just the afflicted person. Proceeds from the evening will support the foundation’s research programs.

Celebrate Spring New York has become a hot ticket ever since it was conceived in 2008 by G. Pennington Egbert III, Missy Egbert Sheehan and Georgina B. Schaeffer. The trio started the Young New Yorkers for the Fight Against Parkinson’s committee to do exactly what the name of the group implies. Inspired by their fathers, who have lived with the condition, their goal is to help fund scientific research to find cure, as well as engage the next generation of philanthropists. Each year, the event brings out countless young supporters into the fold to help fund the work of future leaders in Parkinson’s research and care.

The extraordinary evening was a delectable affair, starting with rounds of unique cocktails and savory hors d'oeuvres, including tuna tartar, pizza margherita, and parmesan chicken. Music by DJ Brenda Black filled the room, where guests showed off their fancy footwork. An exciting live auction with prizes including many romantic getaways, a private stay at Tuxedo Park, and an eighteen-hole golf extravaganza at Fishers Island.

Free Arts NYC 19th Annual Art Auction

BFA_23783_2862213.jpg

On Thursday Night, April 12, Free Arts NYC honored legendary Conceptual Artist Lawrence Weiner at the Free Arts NYC Annual Art Auction.  A longtime collaborator and supporter of Free Arts NYC, native New Yorker Lawrence Weiner is widely considered to be one of the most central figures of Conceptual Art, and is among the trailblazers of the 1960s to pursue inquiries into language as sculpture.

BFA_23783_2862094.jpg

The special event took place at Ukrainian Institute of America—housed in the historic Harry F. Sinclair mansion—guests were treated to an exhibition of aspiring teenage artists from Free Arts NYC’s Creative Career Exploration, Portfolio Mentorship, and Museum & Studio Visit Programs. On March 4th, this group of art lovers took part in a very special workshop led by Lawrence Weiner in his West Village studio. Given the prompt “Not why I am born but now that I am born what do I do?”, the young artists created their own Lawrence Weiner-inspired text art, paired with personal ampersand designs symbolizing individuality. The project is a response to Lawrence's contribution to Free Arts NYC's A to Z Project—an original alphabet created through the collaboration of 45 artists, illustrators, and designers—for which Lawrence designed an ampersand.

Guests were then greeted by Lawrence Weiner’s text piece, “Learn to Read Art” as they ascended a grand staircase adorned with hanging floral gardens. While browsing works of art to bid on by such notable artists as Taryn SimonGlenn LigonRobert LongoRob PruittCharline von HeylRichard Serra, and Agathe Snow—all generously installed by sponsor Crozier Fine Arts—guests were treated to a live performance by the renowned experimental jazz ensemble, Onyx Collective. As guests sip Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut champagne and cocktails from The Sexton Single Malt Speakeasy, they discussed the artistic inspirations and practices of fellow attendees like Chloe WiseSheree Hovsepian, and Eddie Martinez, who all generously donated artwork to the Free Arts NYC auction, which has been live on Artsy since March 29th.

The evening was presented by acclaimed Japanese fashion label Sacai, whose Spring Summer 2018 collection incorporates Lawrence Weiner's iconic text art. On the occasion, Sacai Founder and Head Designer Chitose Abe dresssed such guests as CNN Anchor Kate Bouldan—who was the evening’s MC—actress, DJ, and style icon Mia Moretti, Internet sensation Pari Ehsan, and auction artist Zoë Buckman, among others. Throughout the cocktail hour, guests had the opportunity to see the innovative collection up close while listening to a playlist curated by Mia Moretti, and stepping away to ornament themselves with coveted Lawrence Weiner temporary tattoos.

Axel Vervoordt at New York Benefit

Axel Vervoordt, Kang Chang.JPG

"Axel Vervoordt is a non-conformist, which is dear to my heart. He’s a modernist who embraces every period. He does not use his rooms for modern furniture, but for the best furnishings in the world, and, notably, the best art.” Thus declared Jack Lenor Larsen on Wednesday night when LongHouse Reserve honored Axel at the Hearst Tower.

Matko Tomicic, executive director of LongHouse, welcomed guests and introduced Diane Benson, president of the Board who said, “We are here tonight honoring a man who defies being defined by a single word. So we are right in presenting his award by a woman who also challenges conventions and titles, conceptual artist Kimsooja,” who in turn said, “It is a great honor and pleasure for me to celebrate Axel Vervoordt and his legacy tonight, on the occasion of the prestigious LongHouse Award." The artist continued, "The honor also goes to LongHouse and its mission to reflect world culture and inspire creative talent."

Martha Stewart, Axel Vervoordt, Adelaide de Menil, Jack Lenor Larsen.JPG

In accepting his award, designed by Marc Leuthold, Axel gallantly offered, “Thank you all for coming. I don’t know if I deserve it, but I always do my best,” then delivered a fascinating presentation on design and his theories of art, light, and space. A smaller group of just 50 retired afterwards to Adelaide de Menil's remarkable Central Park South duplex for dinner, where each guest was presented with a signed copy of Axel’s newest book, Stories and Reflections, which is not yet available in the US.

together1heart Partners with JEZ Magazine

Carol Alt, Alex Lundqvist, Karolina Lundqvist.jpg

Last week, together1heart, an organization that works to protect the rights of young women who are victims or at risk of being victims of slavery, partnered with JEZ Magazine for a launch event in Midtown Manhattan. The event was a gathering of supportive future readers, photographers, editors, and writers, and it was hosted by the February’s cover stars, supermodel Carol Alt and Teen Wolf star, Ian Bohen.

The event was an opportunity to receive a first look at JEZ Magazine, as well as to meet individuals who support and are a part of together1heart. As the Executive Director of the organization, Bill Livermore, said, “This is an incredible evening for together1heart to announce a partnership with JEZ Magazine. JEZ is a special publication in that its focus is not just on fashion and beauty, but on how fashion and beauty is deeper than just appearance. To their core, they’re all about social improvement and ways they can work to raise the empowerment of women”.

The launch event was also a moment to discuss the future plans of together1heart, such as focusing on empowering survivors and supporting girls by including a scholarship program, which provides  financial support for nine young women to their education at universities. Indeed, the partnership between JEZ Magazine and the organization is a special one due to not only focusing on culture, style, and fashion, as actor Ian Bohen pointed out, but also social change and helping the victims of sex trafficking, as mentioned the actor, Ian Bohen.

Supermodel Carol Alt then took over the stage, and voiced her admiration for the editor-in-chief of JEZ, Ezequiel De La Rosa. “I wanted to applaud Ezequiel De La Rosa, who is the publisher and editor of JEZ Magazine. And, by the way, he took all the photos of me as well.” For her cover shoot, Alt mentioned how her and De La Rosa traveled to Portugal, where she also ended up walking in a runway show. “Believe it or not, at this day in age, I walked in a show,” said the model, whose speech was followed by a room full of cheer and applause.

Although to launch a magazine in the digital age seems to be a risky move, JEZ Magazine and its contributors, along whom are Victoria Deblauss, Aylen Jover, Sophie Lyons, and Sara Sist, have launched not just a publication, but a creative call for social action. In the words of the editor-in-chief, JEZ hopes “to encourage a spirit of positivity, generosity and philanthropy,” and they are definitely on a mission to a successful future.

The 63nd Viennese Opera Ball

IMG_0528.jpg

The 63rd Viennese Opera Ball took place on February 2nd, 2018, at the legendary and newly reopened Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York City. The annual white tie charity gala celebrates the cultural and economic relationships between Austria and America, connecting two continents, two cities and two centuries in one glamorous night. Founded by Austrians immigrating to the United States more than 63 years ago, the night is a tribute to both their former home town,Vienna, and their new host city, New York.

IMG_0992.jpg

Widely considered as one of New York City’s greatest annual events, the celebration has garnered international media coverage for more than five decades. The white tie attire, considered the most formal dress code, calls for all gentlemen to be outfitted in white tie and tailcoats with decorations, and for all the ladies wear long floor-length ball gowns and opera gloves.

IMG_0550.jpg

Regarded as the most prestigious and oldest Viennese Opera Ball outside of Vienna, the festival drew a global audience that included diplomats and dignitaries, international corporations and celebrities. There event was nothing short of magnificent; and with four generations of guests, the Ball reflects the universal appeal of Austria’s traditional and culinary treasures.

IMG_0106.jpg

Each year the Viennese Opera Ball supports charitable projects that are connected to communities in New York or Vienna. The proceeds of the 63rd Viennese Opera Ball will benefit the music therapy program at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center with the support from Gabrielle's Angel Foundation for Cancer Research.

IMG_0582.jpg

The gala evening featured Opera, Classical Music and Ballroom Dancing including, of course, Waltzing. One popular highlight was the Midnight Quadrille, conducted by Ms. Stockmayer.

IMG_0699.jpg

The Ball opened with the Grand March of Dignitaries and Diplomats. The ceremonial tone of the Ball Opening continued with the Presentation and Posting of the Flags by a West Point Cadet Color Guard. Mr. Serafin then welcomed and thanked the debutantes, escorts and guests, before ballet dancers entered and performed accompanied by the orchestra, Divertimento Viennese. René Pape, operatic Bass and two-time Grammy Award Winner, then performed Le veau d’or from Faust by Gounod.

IMG_0375.jpg

The Debutantes and Escorts then made their entrance, led by choreographer Sandra Stockmayer, who also acts as choreographer for the Vienna Opera Ball.  The program continued with the Presentation of Debutantes and their dance Escorts. A choreographed waltz routine by young ballroom dance couples is followed by a call for "Alles Walzer!" (Everyone Dance!) and guests joined the dancers for the first official waltz of the Ball.

IMG_0513.jpg

The Ball was literally a celebration from night till the break of dawn. Following a champagne reception, the Ball ran from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., and included a four-course dinner. The guests gained new strength at the late-night Austrian specialty buffet after a long evening of fête. The “Tanz Bar” (post-Ball party) followed from 1:00 to 4:00 a.m, and included a full buffet supper with the Viennese Opera Ball's Signature Goulash Soup, as well as multiple venues featuring: a DJ, Vienna Coffee House with Viennese pastries, and a Casino.

IMG_0160.jpg

The event hosted nearly 400 guests including Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, Peter Thomas Roth, CEO, Peter Thomas Roth Clinical Skin Care, Viennese Opera Ball Executive Director Silvia Frieser, Actress Selenis Leyva, Designer Nicole Miller, Two time Grammy winner Rene Pape, and International Committee member Laine Siklos, among others, all praised the debutantes and performers, and noted the event’s importance to the social and cultural fabric of New York City.

The Budapest Festival Orchestra (BFO) held its annual Friends of the Budapest annual concert and gala on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall.

Stephen Benko, Kati Marton, Kathryn Livingston Forgan, George Pataki.JPG

The BFO, under the direction of Iván Fischer, played to a sold-out audience that included Edie Falco and Twyla Tharp. The program opened with Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 2 played on period instruments---Maestro Fischer wife, Gabriella Pivon, among the performers. The evening’s soloist, pianist Dénes Várjon, received standing ovations, as did the whole Orchestra. In a fitting ending, Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No.2 closed out the concert. The beautiful music, which was sensitively conducted and exquisitely performed, was one of the best renditions I have ever heard. I had goosebumps throughout the whole performance.

Ambassador Dr. Laszlo Szabo, Annette Vass, Carol Domina, Adam Giorgy.JPG

Following the concert, Friends of the Budapest Festival Orchestra hosted a gala dinner with Daisy Soros presiding as the evening’s honorary chair and Kathryn Livingston Forgan, Christine Schott Ledes, and Kati Marton as the evening’s gala co-chairs. The dinner took place at the Grand Promenade just outside the entrance to the orchestra. Each table consisted of a member of the symphony to mingle with the patrons. Dinner guests included Tony Bechara, Ambassador and Mrs. Donald Blinken, Nancy Brinker, Noreen Buckfire, Susan Gutfreund, Sylvia Hemingway, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Lehrer, Governor and Mrs. George Pataki, Sana SabbaghJean Sharfiroff, Stephanie Stokes, and Barbara and Donald Tober.

Maestro Fisher used the occasion to announce the inaugural Vicenza Opera Festival and a performance of Verdi’s Fallstaff, concerts, and a dinner hosted by Countess Caroline Valmarina and her family. Like the concert, the October Festival will soon be completely sold out.

A special thanks to Laine Siklos, who was the most gracious table guest. Laine, who is on the committee, kept me entertained throughout the night. She was able to hold a conversation with anyone, and her presence exuded confidence and commanded attention in the best way possible.

NYSPCC Annual Food and Wine Gala

IMG_0625.JPG

The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NYSPCC) hosted its annual Food & Wine Gala at the prestigious Metropolitan Club on November 7th, 2017. The event was attended by business leaders, public figures, and major philanthropists who enjoyed an evening of inspiration and action. The gala, which is the highlight of the organization’s year, celebrates NYSPCC’s continued work in investigation, removal, and placement of abused and neglected children.

IMG_0580.JPG
IMG_0680.JPG

This year’s gala featured renowned Chef Michael Ferraro, co-owner and executive chef of New York’s Delicatessen and Macbar, who designed a one-of-a-kind, four course menu for the roughly 250 guests. The food was delectable — most notably, Chef Michael’s fennel pollen dusted Long Island duck breast with coriander confit carrots, which was perfectly paired with a selection of wines, including those from La Scolca, Marziano Abbona and Baer Winery.

IMG_0641.JPG
IMG_0653.JPG

While the guests were enjoying their phenomenal meal, the evening’s host, Deborah Norville, Inside Edition anchor, and member of The NYSPCC’s Children’s Council, led a fascinating discussion on all things food with Nina and Tim Zagat, the co-founders of the world-famous Zagat Guide. Norville has been a strong supporter of NYSPCC. Her passion to support the program came from her roots as a local reporter in Chicago, which deeply motivated her to continue help exposing child abusers in New York City. She has served on the Children's Council for years, and has emceed the Food & Wine Gala many times.

IMG_0705.JPG
IMG_0609.JPG

"The statistic in New York is that every day there are 244 reported cases of child abuse," said Norville, stressing that many abuses go unreported every day. "That means that during the time we're at this dinner, 30 kids will be physically assaulted, sexually abused, or just emotionally traumatized. All the money that is raised here goes to help those children heal," Norville continued.

IMG_0652.JPG

Celebrated auctioneer Harry Santa-Olalla steered the gala’s reverse auction; and the entire event raised over $700,000 to fund The NYSPCC’s Trauma Recovery Program, which offers a specialized therapeutic program for children, ages 5-18, who have experienced physical or sexual abuse, neglect, traumatic bereavement, or who have witnessed family violence. The agency’s unique work serves as a model for child welfare agencies across the nation.

IMG_0676.JPG

“We are the go-to agency for New York City” said Dr. Mary L. Pulido, Executive Director of The NYSPCC, who delivered a heartfelt speech about the need to protect children from abuse and neglect. “When you hear about a horrific story in the media, we are called to help. When a child endures indescribable abuse, we are called to provide counseling in our trauma recovery program.” Dr. Pulido introduced a video that featured the Society’s programs and personal stories from some of the children who have benefited from them. One of those children, now an adult, was Private First Class Alex Miranda, who was present at the event and received a standing ovation from the audience.

IMG_0626.JPG

Child abuse is a national tragedy which affects millions of children and families every year. We need to work together to help strengthen and support families so that we can prevent such tragedies from occurring. This night's gala reiterate our belief in the American spirit and its power to bring renewed energy and commitment to securing the future of our Nation’s children.

Icla da Silva Foundation Hope Gala

IMG_9907.JPG

On October 18, 2017, the Icla Da Silva Foundation held its annual Hope Gala – a fundraising benefit to support patients in need of a bone marrow transplant -- at Guastavino’s in New York City. The annual Gala is the highlight of the season, bringing together benefactors and friends of the foundation for an unforgettable evening. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the organization’s dedication to saving lives.

IMG_0008.JPG

The extravagant event was attended by business leaders, top influencers, major philanthropists, and many past recipients who enjoyed an evening of inspiration and action. The affair celebrated the foundation’s work to encourage everyday people to step up and become a donor.

IMG_9959.JPG
IMG_0192.JPG

The evening began at 6:30 with a cocktail reception, which was followed by a seated dinner at 7:30, when guests were greeted with a homemade soft dinner roll. An appetizer of a napoleon of grilled vegetables was followed by a main course of pepper crusted filet mignon. Caramelized peach cobbler was served for dessert. Throughout the evening, guests were able to bid on the silent auction which was stocked full of incredible finds. The Gala would go on to raise a grand total of $400,000 dollars.

22770001_1532340286854119_7268334061553327503_o.jpg

The program continued with the awards presentation. Dr. Jeffrey Chell, CEO Emeritus of Be The Match was presented with the Legacy of Hope Award while East River Medical Imaging, a medical diagnostic imaging center based in New York City, received the Healthcare Leadership Award. Both of these awards were presented by Traci Fox, a patient who has been with the organization for over 10 years, and who has yet to find a match. “She takes an oral chemotherapy drug daily and except for occasional fatigue, is tolerating the medicine well and never complains. I want to find a match for my daughter, and the people in this room tonight gives me hope,” said Traci’s father.

IMG_0021.JPG
IMG_0044.JPG

"There are people who are alive because of the work we do,” said Icla da Silva Foundation’s President and brother of Icla, Airam da Silva. “Our job is not done, until every patient that needs a bone marrow transplant, receives one. Legacy is not leaving something for people, it’s leaving something in people. It’s because of Icla that today we continue to save lives.”

IMG_0057.JPG

The evening's high point was the emotional first-time meeting between a patient and his life-saving bone marrow donor. Bone marrow patients are not able to meet their donors until at least one year after a successful transplant. Tancrede Bouveret met his life saving bone marrow donor, Samantha, for the first time. The two ran across the stage and gave each other the biggest hug. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house. “A part of me is with him now, I feel like we forever bonded. I would do this again in a heartbeat,” said Samantha when asked if she would donate again. Samantha also had a message for the people who are hesitant about donating: “imagine yourself in that person’s shoes, what if it was you or a member of your family that needed a lifesaving match, you would not be hesitating at all.” After the emotional meeting, everyone got onto the dance floor and partied the night away.

F64A5441 (1).jpg
F64A5516.jpg

There are still so many people in the world that need lifesaving matches. Do your part and sign up to be a donor. People often think of bone marrow donation as a very painful procedure. However, this is not the case. Registering to be a donor involves nothing more than filling in a form followed by a self-administered and painless cheek cell swab using four Q-tips, which are then packed up and sent through the mail to be processed and eventually stored in the National Marrow Donor Program Registry. In only ten to 15 percent of cases is it necessary to administer a general anesthetic and remove cells from the pelvic bone, which results in few days of soreness – alleviated, say the donors.  Please go sign up to be a donor so we can help people like Traci and thousands of other patients like her that are waiting for life saving bone marrow transplants

ABOUT TANCREDE BOUVERET, BONE MARROW PATIENT:

Tancrède was born at the Naval Medical Center of San Diego on May 14, 2004.  His father, Luc Bouveret, always dreamed of having a child, and so with the help of a surrogate in California, Tancrede entered the world.

In March of 2015, Tancrede was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), which progressed into Leukemia. The fathers were notified that their son had less than a 10% chance of survival.  The only cure is to receive a matching bone marrow transplant. After several months, a 90% match came through. With great hope, the fathers asked to wait a little bit longer for a 100% match.  Three weeks later, in July of 2015, a 100% matching donor was identified in Madison, Wisconsin.  Tancrede received his transplant on July 29, 2015.

Due to complications, he spent almost 2 years in the hospital.  His body needed an additional transplant of lymphocytes, which the donor agreed to, without hesitation. Tancrede is now 13 years old and despite his illness he continues to lead a normal life.  Although still in recovery, taking an abundant amount of medicines, antibiotics, monthly chemotherapy and blood treatments, he is persistent on keeping his above average attendance in school.  Tancrede has a knack for learning. He speaks four languages, is socially conscious, and has his own YouTube channel.

His fathers insist that none of this would be possible with the Icla da Silva Foundation and his life-saving bone marrow donor.

ABOUT ICLA DA SILVA FOUNDATION

The Icla da Silva Foundation was established in 1992, in memory of the 13-year-old Brazilian girl named Icla da Silva. After two years of fighting leukemia, Icla passed away in New York City, where she came hoping to get her life saving treatment: a bone marrow transplant. The young girl never found a matching donor. Upon her death, her family established the Foundation with the mission to save lives by recruiting bone marrow donors and by providing support services to children and adults with leukemia and other diseases treatable by marrow transplants.

Now in its 25th year, the Foundation, The Icla da Silva Foundation is the largest recruitment center for the Be The Match Registry in the United States. The Foundation holds over 2,000 bone marrow drives every year. It recruits over 38,000 new potential bone marrow donors every year, with a strong focus on minority communities.

On Wednesday, September 23rd, the American Cancer Society and the Look Good Feel Better Foundation joined together at Cipriani 42nd Street to host the 33rd annual Dreamball gala.

This year, the Dreamball gala honored Barry and Marla Beck, founders of Bluemercury, Inc, and  Donald J. Loftus, President of Parlux Ltd, for their support of and contributions to the Look Good Feel Better Program, whose mission is to help cancer patients come to terms with the appearance related side effects of treatment through lessons on skin care, cosmetics, and styling.

Don’t get it wrong, though --  the Look Good Feel Better program is much more about confidence than vanity. Throughout the night, countless people shared how the program had provided them not only with a community of support, but, in the much applauded words of this years Dreamgirl, actress Krista Rodrigeuz, “the realization that I could still look like myself, which helped me still feel like myself.”

Her charm and vitality lit up the room, and after being stunned by her rendition of "Tomorrow," from Annie, everyone was ready to bid on the many beautiful items available for auction, including timepieces from Frederique Constant, a trip to Miraval Arizona, and an entire skincare line from Dior.

Following the silent auction, guests headed over to Dreamball After Dark, where they danced the night away to musical duo 'Issac Likes Jenny' while sipping on cocktails and enjoying hors d'oeuvres.

While it seems minor compared to some of the other pitfalls of cancer, appearance related changes are incredibly debilitating to cancer patients -- exemplified by the fact that the Look Good Feel Better program only began when a doctor became concerned after a patient of theirs felt too dissatisfied with their own appearance to leave their bed.

7th annual New York Harbor Regatta

IMG_0534.jpg

On Friday, September 15th, in hopes of capturing that last bit of summer, Billion Oyster Project hosted the 7th annual New York Harbor Regatta & Bash in New York Harbor and on Governors Island—a favorite among sailing enthusiasts and New Yorkers alike.

IMG_0539.jpg

The ultimate waterfront party presented a full day of wonderful activities, starting with half a day of sailing in the iconic New York Harbor. When the clock struck 2:00pm, more than twenty boats made their way to the race against the backdrop of the downtown Manhattan skyline. Sailors and supporters from New York City-based companies and organizations competed in the J24, Colgate 26, J80, and Melges classes for the opportunity to win the NY Harbor Cup.

Ticketed spectators enjoyed a front row seat to the regatta from a spectator cocktail cruise aboard the Manhattan II – part of the Classic Harbor Line fleet of classic yachts, which boasts a 100-foot long all-glass observatory. Aboard the yacht, fresh oysters from Fishers Island Oyster Farm and light bites courtesy of The Clam were served. Intimate tables and a well-stocked bar along with exhilarating race commentary completed the race viewing experience.

VIP guests were invited onboard the Mariner III which was hosted by Murray Fisher, Chair of Billion Oyster Project, and Pete Malinowski, Executive Director of Billion Oyster Project. A raw bar courtesy of Empire Oyster and light bites by Oceana Restaurant made the view experience on the Mariner III unforgettable.

The party continued after the race, as invitees disembarked on Governors Island for a festive evening bash at the brand-new Island Oyster restaurant & bar - an open-air oyster bar with magnificent views of downtown Manhattan—while the sun set behind the scenic Statue of Liberty. Patrons that did not make the daytime regatta later arrived via a ferry, which was only a 10 minute ride away from the Battery Maritime Building in the financial district. Even former Senator, Daniel Squadron, came out and showed support.

Later on, guests were joined by the racing teams and other partygoers for an amazing night marked with a live DJ, open bar, oysters, and seasonal bites from local eateries including Ed’s Chowder House, Midnights, Glazed and Confused, The Roxy, Brooklyn Crab, The Clever Co, and many more. There is nothing like having a fun and memorable night while supporting a wonderful cause.

All proceeds from the event supports New York Harbor School and The Billion Oyster Project's mission to create a diverse network of environmentally literate students, schools, and communities working together to restore New York Harbor.

The New York Harbor School is the only one of its kind in the city. For Harbor kids, the only way to commute to class is by the Governors Island Ferry. The guests at the bash were able to experience this commute as they traveled on the ferry to reach the party. But, can you imagine doing this every day to get to school or work? These kids show their dedication by traveling far from all over the five boroughs to receive their well-deserved education. The Harbor School’s location is deliberate, as students can learn from and within the water, and gain maritime skills as they work on restoring the devastated oyster reefs around their surroundings.

One of the school’s major initiatives is the Billion Oyster Project, a harbor oyster ecosystem restoration project that runs educational activities, restaurant oyster recycling initiatives and other programs throughout the city. The project’s goal is to restore one billion oyster to New York Harbor by 2035. With these kids, and New Yorker’s support, we can reach that goal one shell at a time.

Special Olympics NY Summer Gala

The 11th Annual Special Olympics Summer Social Gala, which took place at Marquee on August 10th, was a great success! Over 500 affluent New Yorkers attended this evening party in order to support the athletes of Special Olympics New York,.

2.jpg

Children and adults living with disabilities face isolation and even poverty. The Special Olympics not only plays a role in erasing these kinds of barriers, but also letting people know that they’re just like us. By being given equal footing with able-bodied people, the athletes in the Special Olympics have opportunities to develop their talents and gain recognition in more than 200 athletic competitions, which are all supported by the Special Olympics New York. With their funds, over 68,000 athletes can train and participate in the competition with no cost.

3.jpg

For charity-minded young professionals, sets by DJ Luther Riggs, heated the dance floor, while an open bar, offering many options from fine cocktails, wines, and craft brews, was endlessly flowing for all the guests. Afterward, the electronic violin performance by Timothee Lovelock rocketed up the vibe until it the end of the night.

People also had a chance to meet the Special Olympics heroes in person. Wearing their medals, athletes complied cheerfully with requests to pose for photographs, and also didn’t hesitate to join others on the dance floor. At the end of the event, a meaningful speech by Danny Davila, Special Olympics World Games Athlete, was given.

The same as last year, there was a silent auction, with all prizes donated from top brands, including Tiffany & Co., Flywheel, getaways to the Monarch Beach Resort, a stay at the Diamond Hotel (NYC/Palm Beach), Yankees tickets, and so much more. All the money raised from ticket sales and the auction went towards raising funds for the athletes.

James Tang, Adam Merino, Taylor Burns and Joe Stewart made their appearance to announce the result of fund-raising. Compared to the original goal of $7,500, the final total was much higher, at $11,630. When the record breaking total was announced, Special Olympics stars and guests restarted dancing wildly, and Timothee Lovelock once again performed the electronic violin in honor of the moment!

Over 10 sponsors and numerous donors made this amazing night. For information or to donate to Special Olympics New York please visit: http://specialolympics-ny.org/

Special Thanks to Kaitlin

Hayground School’S 13th Annual Chefs Dinner

Hayground School celebrated its 13th Annual Chefs Dinner on Sunday, July 30, 2017 in Jeff’s Kitchen at the Hayground School in Bridgehampton, NY. Chef Tom Colicchio and Nick & Toni’s Toni Ross (a Hayground founder) hosted a farm-to-table benefit dinner which honored Bill Telepan (Executive Chef Oceana and Wellness in the Schools) and Tinka D. Topping (Hayground Founding Member). Eleven Chefs including Arjun Achuthan (Haygound School); Josh Capon (Lure Fishbar, Bowery Meat Company); Michael Cavaniola (Cavaniola's Gourmet); Claudia Fleming  (North Fork Table & Inn); Roger Martinez (Il Buco); Christian Mir (Stone Creek Inn); Garrison Price (Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria); Hillary Sterling (Cook Shop, Vic's); Trevor Swope (Dock to Dish); Joe Realmuto (Nick and Toni's & Townline BBQ), and Jason Weiner(Almond, L&W Oyster Co.) prepared the perfect evening for a group of 150 modern food cognoscenti.

Each year, Hayground secures a handful of culinary masters to work together for one night only, cooking together in one kitchen, to raise funds for the school. Chefs Dinner is the school’s only fundraiser, with additional funds coming from the highly coveted summer camp. The event raises funds, which will support the 82% of students who are receiving financial aid during Hayground’s school year.

One of the evening’s first speakers was Tohanash Tarrant, granddaughter of Elizabeth Thunderbird Haile, alongside Tinka Topping, one of Hayground’s founding members.  Cohannash was a graduate of Hayground’s first year.

Guest list included: Hilaria and Alec Baldwin, Dorothy Lichtenstein, Tony Hitchcock, Alan Patricof, and Nisa and Jeffrey Tannenbaum.

The evening began with guests enjoying a variety of locally grown hor d'oeuvres. Josh Capon served Chilled Fishers Island Oysters with Pineapple Cucumber Salsa, Chilled Kushi Oysters with Jalapeño Ponzu, Uncle Arthur’s Chilled Littleneck Clams with Hot Sauce and Lemon.  Michael Cavaniola provided an artisanal cheese selection. Arjun Achuthan made wood fired flatbreads in the Hayground wood-fired oven with Hayground student chefs. Roger Martinez served figs, ricotta, marcona almond and aged balsamic. Trevor Swope provided Montauk Crudo of Citrus Cured Local Fish. Jason Weiner prepared beet and cucumber gazpacho with smoked bluefish and horseradish (which he also prepared on Good Day New York, earlier in the week).

During the Five-Course dinner, Hillary Sterling prepared the first course of local tomatoes in saor, paired with Domaine le Fay d'Homme Muscadet de Sevre et Maine sur Lie 2015.  Garrison Price prepared the second course of housemade maccheroncini with local clams, garlic scape pesto and sunflower sprouts which was paired with San Giovanni Paestum Bianco 2015. Christian Mir created the third course of butter poached lobster with coconut ginger lime broth, which was paired with Fattoria San Lorenzo Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi Classico Superiore "Campo delle Oche" 2012. Joe Realmuto prepared the fourth course of roasted quail with local peaches, corn and arugula, paired with Fabrizio Iuli Vino Rosso "Nino" [Pinot Nero] 2013. Claudia Fleming served the fifth course of blackberries and sweet corn cream, which was paired with Ezio Cerruti Moscato Bianco Passito "Sol" 2011. The five chefs prepared the entire dinner using local ingredients, some of which came straight from the Edible Schoolyard gardens, located on Hayground’s own 13 acres.  The evening’s wine selections were made by Christian Troy Indie Wineries.

A live auction hosted by Charles Antin of Lot 1 Auctioneers included some very exciting packages, including a package of gift certificates to some of New York City’s most renowned restaurants courtesy of chef Bill Telepan’s close friends and colleagues. The Island of Mustique – Villa Americawinner received one week on the exclusive island of Mustique in the Caribbean archipelago, a fabulous contemporary hillside villa with a relaxed, open floor plan that offers spectacular sea-views across the Northern Grenadines. The Ultimate Nick & Toni’s Package winner received dinner and wine for six guests at Nick & Toni’s in East Hampton and an invitation for four to the opening night at Coche Comedor, the newest culinary destination by the Nick & Toni’s team. Additionally, they will receive a reservation at Nick & Toni’s once a week from August through Labor Day weekend for up to four people. Another winner received a Chefs Tasting Menu for 6 at Le Bernardin, including a menu hand-picked by Chef Eric Ripert with wines selected by Sommelier Aldo Sohm. In a surprise addition, the highest bidder won complimentary reservations to the re-opening of the winner of World’s Best Restaurant: Eleven Madison Park.

Chefs Jason Weiner and Josh Capon introduced their friend, honoree Bill Telepan. Chef Bill Telepan was honored for his activism and tireless work with Wellness in the Schools, a non-profit that helps provide public school students with essential meals as well as culinary education. Telepan has helped 100 schools in four states fight obesity and low academic performance by providing healthier meals and exercise programs.  “If the nation would think about the difficulties kids are having with obesity and low performance—the cost lost to our thinkers, innovators, even our military—they will quickly see how much this is costing us. And if they change how that money is spent, and how much they are funding meals in the schools, and if they think about the next generation of kids being healthy and sharp, the benefits are all there,” said evening honoree Chef Bill TelepanChef Telepan was introduced to Hayground’s programs by Chef Jason Weiner of Almond Restaurants, a longtime supporter of the Hayground’s Chefs Dinner, whose daughter attends the school.

Ella Engel-Snow and Jaja Engel-Snow, granddaughters of Tinka Topping gave a moving tribute. Honored for being one of Haygound’s founding members and devotion to children’s education, Topping is a champion for children’s education and the right to learn; she supports the implementation of new, exciting, alternative ways to educate school children. Tinka also has been an active and vocal proponent of preserving farmland and open space, vital to the environment and way of life on the East End.

“In founding Hayground, we had several goals: to break down the out of date lock-step definition of an age bound classroom, to produce a model of what any elementary school should be in terms of its population—diverse in race, class, ethnicity, available to all—and to remove a hierarchical structure in which a director is the captain of the ship in favor of a horizontal model in which the teachers design the program with their interests and passions forming how their classes will emerge. We learned a lot, and are still learning how to be a more creative, intellectual, and exciting place for kids to learn, that survives in this increasingly complex and difficult world,” says evening honoree Tina Topping.

The Chefs Dinner Committee included: Toni Ross (Chair Emeritus), Elaine DiGiacomo (Co-chair), Almond Zigmund (Co-chair), Erica-Lynn Huberty, Scott O'Neil, Perry Burns, Craig Wood, Christian Troy, Cindi Crain, and Jamison Wilson.

The Chefs Dinner Advisory Committee included: Karine Bahkoum, Josh Capon, Emily Chu, Leslie Close, Tom Colicchio, Kimberly Cooper, Brain Halweil, Tony Hitchcock, Ron Kaplan, Victoria Munroe, Joseph Realmuto, Susan Ringo, Éric Ripert, Sandra Ripert, Clifford Ross, and Lori Silverbush.

Since 1996, Hayground’s mission has been to create a community of students and mentors who explore together the central questions of human culture in the natural world. Hayground fulfills its mission through a set of core values and practices:  diversity, mentorship, meaningful work, mixed age groups, social responsibility, and sustainability.

In 2004, the Hayground community joined hands to build Jeff’s Kitchen, a state-of-the-art culinary classroom that was the long-held dream of founding parent and local restaurateur Jeff Salaway.  Today, the Culinary Arts Program is a complete embodiment of the Hayground experience—an authentic endeavor that demands daily collaboration and a full integration of academic, social, and professional skills. Throughout the year, students learn how to grow, prepare, and cook in Jeff’s Kitchen under the guidance of chef Arjun Achuthan. The school’s Culinary Arts Program teaches students farm-to-table practices, incorporating incidental hands-on science and math lessons, nutrition and business skills.

Hayground Founders: Elizabeth Bertsch, Arjun Achuthan, Perry Burns, Kathy Engel, Susan Engel, Kathy Faraone, Nicole Feret, Anna Gerschman, David Gruber, Elizabeth Thunderbird Haile, Sarah Stahl Jaffe, Gordon J.
