Sundara Gala
On September 27th, the Sundara team hosted its annual gala at Casa La Femme in West Village. The event supported Sundara’s global mission to provide every child with access to essential hygienic goods and education. Sundara focuses on recycling old bars of soap from hotels that would otherwise be thrown away, employing women to be “hygiene ambassadors.” These women issue the soap and provide lessons on hygiene to community centers, schools, orphanages, and so forth.
Guests at the gala enjoyed drinks, live entertainment, hors d'oeuvres, a photo booth, and a live auction. One of the features of the night included a lively belly dancing performance, which was undoubtedly a crowd favorite. The auction, which was made possible by sponsors such as LUSH, Worth, Barry’s Bootcamp, Hyatt, and others, provided guests with a variety of prizes to go home with, all contributing to Sundara’s operation.
Overall, the evening was a hit. Many guests came to show their support, and Sundara’s efforts will continue to inspire everyone who attended. If you wish to make a donation, see below

ABOUT THE CASITA MARIA CENTER FOR ARTS & EDUCATION:
For more than 80 years, Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education has served as a cultural and community anchor for thousands of young people and their families in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. Casita has earned a reputation as the first and oldest Latino charity in New York City. The mission of the Casita Maria Center for Arts & Education is to empower youth and their families by creating a culture of learning through high quality social, cultural, and educational opportunities.
Casita Maria was founded in 1934 by Claire and Elizabeth Sullivan, two schoolteachers in the living room of their apartment. Their goal was to give the children of recently arrived Latino families the support they needed to meet the challenges of a new language and a novel school system. The hope was that the young would thrive in their new homeland and lead their parents and their community to full participation in the American Dream. By developing innovative responses and programs as issues arose, relocating to the South Bronx as its community moved around the city, Casita has been able to effectively serve each new generation. By 1961, Casita was offering programs and essential services to thousands of New Yorkers. Even when the Bronx “burned” in the 1970's, Casita remained a safe haven and a gateway to opportunity. Today, Casita Maria is an institution, a driving force for scholastic enrichment through its vital after school and educational programs that focus on the arts and technology.

Together1heart Gala
Susan Sarandon and Danny Abeckaser were honored Monday night at the together1heart inaugural New York Gala at TAO Downtown. The evening supported together1heart's continued work to end slavery and to support women's rights globally.
It was a moving evening with every speaker receiving a standing ovation. Bill Livermore, Executive Director of together1heart, cited a figure of 22 million girls currently held in sex slavery worldwide and the emergence of significantly younger women being sold into Cambodian brothel’s. “Somaly Mam recently rescued a child of only 22 months,” he said.
Sina Vann, herself a survivor of sex slavery, and now a staff member of together1heart, described the horrific conditions she was kept in against her will, and the joy she now experiences working with survivors. Actor, writer, and producer Danny Abeckaser received the “Voices for Change” award for his generous support of both the organization and for the chairman, actress AnnaLynne McCord. Said McCord, “This organization changed my life, gave me a sense of worth, and an understating of what one person can do. When you show up for children you change the world. I want to applaud everyone who showed up tonight.”
Susan Sarandon and Somaly Mam together on stage made an indelible impression. Said Susan, “In this time when you can be disheartened and distraught, look instead at how many women are finding their voices and how many men are standing beside them. Love is a powerful force and we are all privileged to be part of the love Somaly Mam brings to a difficult story. Look at what Somaly has done, what one person can do. She invited me to meet the young women and girls in her program. What I met were strong women. You don’t forget the past but you can move forward”. Said Somaly on closing, “Susan, I love you very much”.
together1heart works to care for and secure the rights of young women and girls who are victims, or at risk of being victims, of slavery, and to successfully recover, educate, train and reintegrate them into mainstream society through financial independence in a sustainable and innovative manner. Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint
Fall’s officially started, but block party season isn’t over until we review the street event to top them all: Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint, the biggest summer tasting event in all of the New York City.
A tradition of nine years, Taste WG is a celebration of the many local eateries that give North Brooklyn it’s distinctive, local flavor. Restaurants, bars and breweries both old and new gather together to put out samples of their menus for everyone to enjoy, with this years sampling including tostadas from Zona Rosa, bruschetta from Leuca, and mac and cheese from Pies and Thighs, among many, many, others. Some of my personal favorites were the donuts from Du’s Donuts, as well as a brand new pasta from @baranobk.
In addition to the abundance of delectable treats, Taste WG also provides entertainment for the whole family -- live music, a DJ set by electro DJ ghostbaby, and activities and games hosted by the YMCA. This year, kids and parents alike could participate in yoga, basketball, a massive Jenga play corner, and even take funky, prop filled pictures in a complimentary photo booth in between trying out bites or beer.
And in case the food wasn’t enough to tempt you, all proceeds from Taste WG go to The Firehouse North Brooklyn Community Center, an organization that fosters civic and community activity in Brooklyn.
For a full list of participating vendors at Taste Williamsburg Greenpoint, check out their website, http://www.tastewg.com/ or instagram: @taste_wg.
The Hotline x Kilian
On Wednesday August 1st, a very special “scented” occasion was held at Kilian boutique. The National Domestic Violence Hotline and Killian partnered up to hold a fundraiser and discover more about the mission of The Hotline.
The Hotline is the only 24/7 national organization that has access to service providers & shelters across the US to help people affected by domestic violence. They handle an average of 1300+ phone calls, chats, & texts a day. This is an insane amount of calls, and that is not even close to the amount of domestic violence that happens every single passing minute. You never know what is happening behind closed doors. This is why it is so important to hold these events that spread awareness.
Have you ever experienced the feeling of nostalgia when you smell a certain scent, and it takes you back to a distinct memory? It feels like you are reliving that moment all over again. The Hotline spreads such an important message regarding awareness of domestic violence, and Killian wanted to help everyone remember that. Guests who attended this event had the option to purchase Kilian fragrances and have the proceeds go towards The Hotline. Hopefully, these guests will smell Kilian and they will remember what they learned about The Hotline. Hopefully they will tell their friends about their mission, and more victims will know that there is an organization out there that can help them.
So many victims of domestic violence are scared to tell anyone about what is happening to them at home because they don’t want their partner to retaliate, they don’t want to be judged, or they don’t know how to rebuild a new life. The Hotline offers a completely judgement-free service, safety and help for the survivor, and they even offer counseling to abusers who want to change. They deal with all aspects of abusive relationships, and they truly make the effort to end abuse once and for all from the root of the problem.
1300+ phone calls, chats, & texts a day means $20 average per contact. This estimates The Hotline needs $26,000+ per day to keep their phone, chat and text services operating to provide victims with crisis intervention, options for next steps & direct connection to sources for immediate safety. Your $100 donation will help 5 people receive superior support & guidance. Your $250 kind donation will help 12 people get compassionate, knowledgeable support. Your $500 generous donation will support 25 people with a local resource referral, such as a shelter or legal aid.
Please DONATE today.
Special thanks to Stacy Dreyfus of the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
Selah Freedom
On Wednesday, August 8, 2018, Selah Freedom launched its NYC Selah Way Foundation luncheon at Wells Fargo located at 150 East 42nd Street. Elizabeth Melendez Fisher, co-founder of Selah Freedom, delivered a heartwarming presentation that included stories and statistics of young children right here in our own backyard.
“It was very exciting to launch the The Selah Way Foundation in NYC to a standing room only crowd of industry leaders. I feel so blessed that we are able to roll out the collaboration with the most highly vetted and regarded organizations coming together to eradicate sex trafficking in America. We will continue to take the best practices and not only make a major impact in America but take the global training arm to save and advocate for children and become interrupters to the process of trafficking happening around the world,” stated Elizabeth Melendez Fisher.
Also speaking on behalf of the organization, was Andy Adler, sports director and anchor for PIX11 News and pre-game host for the Giants, Yankees and Jets. Andy drove the point home, “These young women never had a chance at life. They don’t see an out, Selah is an intervention, a chance to recalibrate and set life on a new path. These young women need an advocate, Selah is a voice for the voiceless.”
Other guests included Tony Richardson, NFL Hall of Fame and NY Jets Commentator, Laura B. Riso, NYC FBI Agent Victim Specialist, Arthur D. Ettinger, celebrity matrimonial attorney Greenspoon Marder and Daina Falk, owner of Hungry Fan and daughter of legendary sports agent David Falk. Guests enjoyed a delicious summer cuisine by Celebrity Chef Chris Nirschel and a performance by DeeMo, Singer - Songwriter - Actor (“Gotham” and NBC’s “Shades of Blue”) who sang HERO, his hit single with his band.
Read my interview with the incredible and inspiring Elizabeth Fisher below:
Me: “Sex Trafficking is an issue that we unfortunately don’t hear much about, it tends to get swept under the rug due to most people just not wanting to acknowledge it because it’s uncomfortable. How do we guide the public conversation about sex trafficking more into the spotlight?”
Elizabeth: “I think that ‘Me Too’ has done a great job of starting the conversation. Now people are talking about what is happening. I think that by creating these platforms to speak out about sexual abuse, it opens the conversation. No one even wanted to speak about trafficking but now that sexual abuse is getting a platform and people are making the connection, trafficking is making headlines.”
Me: “What is the process when you first take a survivor in?”
Elizabeth: “It’s chasing them for years and years to help them realize they’re worth it. We’re in the streets, we’re in the courts, we’re in the jails, we are everywhere that these girls are. We help them take the next step like maybe commit to group meetings once a week, let them see what our house reform is. It’s a lot of dictating them to come to us, then they come and suddenly they get a peer assessment plan, an education plan, a GED, a career path, college goals and everything they need for a new start.”
Me: “There are people who are aware that sex trafficking is a major issue but think ‘what am i supposed to do about it?’ What are some things anyone can do to help end sex trafficking?”
Elizabeth: “Share information and spread awareness. We have “Parties with a Purpose” which anyone can host, you invite friends and we give you a kit with awareness literature and survivor stories to inform the guests about sex trafficking as well as donation cards for fundraising. We just have to start talking about it.”
Me: “I noticed Selah Freedom has a huge presence in Florida and Chicago, do you plan on expanding your presence in New York City?”
Elizabeth: “Yes we are currently doing our outreach and awareness programs here. What you see in Florida and Chicago is housing hubs, we will not have housing here. Our main focus here is prevention. We transport girls from everywhere to our existing housing hubs.”
About Selah Freedom
Selah Freedom has become the nation’s leading service provider to young American girls sold into sex trafficking and has the highest level of outcomes and standards in Selah Freedom’s safe housing, jail and court diversion programs. On July 28th, Architechnology Designs presented Jill Zarin’s 6th Annual Luxury Luncheon at Topping Rose House in East Hampton. The event raised funds for Thyroid Oncology Group in honor of Jill’s late husband, Bobby Zarin, who lost his battle against thyroid cancer earlier this year.
The soiree invited guests into an intimate luxury experience filled with high-end beauty products, melt-in-your-mouth delicacies like kobe beef, and plenty of rosé, all enjoyed to the tune of DJ Samantha Michelle’s music.
When asked about the significance of continuing her annual luncheon, Jill answered, "He was just always supportive of everything I did. Bobby always said one more and that’s it. So, in honor of him, one more.”
Jill was supported by a crowd of celebrity friends, including Real Housewives Leanne Locken from Dallas, Vicki Gunvalson from Orange County, Juliet Angus from Ladies of London, Kathy Wakile from New Jersey, and Cindy Barshop from New York. Also in attendance were Heather McDonald, Dina Lohan, and Jill’s best friend and Millionaire Matchmaker Patti Stanger, who flew out from California for the special event.
Guests were free to mingle and enjoy a feast of different experiences, including endless product samples, a designer trunk show, custom hairstyling, and even IV detox therapy by BeWell.
By the end of the day, guests walked away with swag bags valued at thousands of dollars. Those with “golden tickets” were treated to personalized gifts from vendors including jewelry line Kendra Scott, millennial makeup brand Winky Lux, and Lolea Sangria from Barcelona.
Proceeds from the event go toward research to find a cure for thyroid cancer. “Bobby’s team of doctors from MD Anderson, Memorial Sloane Kettering and Mayo Clinic were active members of ITOG’s community and were directly responsible for the treatment Bobby received including the last one that gave Bobby the extra 6 months we had together,” said Zarin. The event was a touching way to give back while commemorating the cause with friends, family, and socialites alike.

On the evening of Tuesday, June 12th, crowds of people gathered at the concert venue Brooklyn Steel for a showcase of Bushwick’s vibrant culinary scene. The event celebrated the 5th annual Taste of Bushwick, which provided relief for those struggling to keep up with the new bars and restaurants opening everyday in Bushwick. The highly anticipated tasting festival has become one of Brooklyn's premier culinary events.

Some of Bushwick’s most renowned culinary institutions convened at the outdoor space to rejoice the neighborhood’s active gastronomic life while offering tastes of their food and drink. All proceeds from the event benefit the upcoming 2017-18 season of theater, dance, puppetry, and performance at the neighborhood’s Obie Award-winning, non-profit theater The Bushwick Starr, located at 207 Starr Street.

The Ucross Foundation Gala
The Ucross Foundation hosted its inaugural New York Gala & Awards Dinner last night at The Appel Room at Jazz at Lincoln Center. The night was filled with performances and readings by notable award-winning artists, all Ucross alumni, including Ricky Ian Gordon (Grapes of Wrath, opera), Steven Lutvak (A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder), bestselling author Tayari Jones, author and Vanity Fair contributor Elissa Schappell, composer/pianist Dylan Mattingly, trumpeter Frank London, and singer-songwriter Kate Schutt. Special guests included Broadway stars Laura Benanti and Nancy Anderson. A collection of artwork from Ucross visual artist alumni was on display and available for purchase. The emcee was former journalist and current film and television screenwriter William "Bill" Broyles.
At the heart of the evening was the presentation of the Ucross Award for Distinguished Achievement in the Arts, which was presented to Pulitzer Prize-winning author Annie Proulx by the editor of The New Yorker, David Remnick. Proulx is widely recognized for many of her literary works, notably Brokeback Mountain, which was first published in The New Yorker in 1997. Remnick noted The New Yorker’s long history with Proulx stating, “It’s always been a privilege to publish Annie’s work in The New Yorker and it’s a privilege to take part in this ceremony tonight.”
In the early stages of her writing career, Ucross granted Proulx the solitude and inspiration to become a literary legend. She acknowledged the impact and continuing growth of the Ucross residency stating, “I have watched Ucross grow from a remote place that offered a few writers and artists shelter and solitude become a highly regarded and important resource for creative people: writers, painters, filmmakers, sculptures, all the rest. Ucross has developed real clout in the intellectual ethos of this country and beyond. What happens in this little corner of Wyoming matters to the way we all think, see and interpret the world and ultimately how we solve our problems.”
The evening began with a cocktail hour featuring a visual arts exhibit and sale by Ucross alumni. One of the paintings, by artist Pamela Talese, was presented as a gift to philanthropists Jesse and Cathy Marion, who received the Outstanding Patron of the Arts Award. All the works in the exhibit may be viewed here.
Philip Himberg, Artistic Director of the Sundance Institute Theatre Program was also honored last night with the Outstanding Creative Partnership Award for his years of collaboration with Ucross.

David Wells and The Perfect Game: 20 Year Anniversary
On May 17, 1998, David Wells, a pitcher for the Yankees, reached the climax of his 21-year major league career by defeating all 27 Minnesota Twins. The pitch, which led to a Yankees win, became a significant point in baseball history as the 15th perfect game in major league history.
20 years later, on the same day in 2018, Wells and his fellow Yankee teammates reunited at a charity event for Wells’ Perfect 33 foundation. Celebrities, who were also present at the game, gathered at Sony Hall to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the “Perfect Game.” Although the game and the pitch turned iconic and seamlessly entered baseball history, the story behind the pitch is even more fascinating.
In his 2003 autobiography titled, Perfect, I’m Not, Wells revealed to his fans that when he threw his shot, he was “half-drunk, with bloodshot eyes, monster breath, and a raging, skull-rattling hangover.” In addition, according to a recent Seth Meyer interview with Jimmy Fallon, the night before the big game, Wells and Fallon went out to an SNL after-party. The occasion led to Wells sleeping only for an hour, ending up in bed at 5:30am.
Yet, this did not stop the Yankee pitcher from practicing his throw all morning before and performing his best during the game. “I think I overdid it,” said Wells during the event. “Thank God for coffee and water. You would never think in a million years that you’re going out, hungover and throw a perfect game.” Especially because that day, the Yankee stadium gathered 49,820 spectators, hundreds of whom were children, since the main sponsor of the game was Beanie Baby.
Despite the fact that a monumental day in baseball history started off with a rough night, when asked if he would change anything about that day, Wells responded with a good-humored “nothing.” Instead, he emphasized the importance of doing your own thing, while having his fellow teammates’ support.
“I beat to my own drum sometimes,” said Wells. “I had my teammates and they had my back at all times. That’s what you have to do. You have to have each other’s backs at all times.”
About Perfect 33

ReThink Food Gala
Every year, NYC sends million tons of waste to landfills, almost a third of which is solely food. When food waste degrades in landfills, it produces methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. NYC restaurants, in total, account for the largest single stream of food waste on the commercial side. They generate close to more than 650,000 tons of food waste annually. As such, the restaurant segment represents the greatest commercial opportunity to reduce the volume of New York City’s landfilled food waste. If just five percent of New York City’s largest restaurants deterred from landfill half of the food waste they generate – by reducing it at source, donating what’s edible, and composting what’s not, the city as a whole would reduce landfilled commercial food waste 14 percent.
ReThink Food NYC Inc, is trying to fix this extensive problem. With donations from some of NYC’s top restaurants and product suppliers such as Eleven Madison Park, Fleishers, Square Roots, and many more. The company takes excess food from food distributors, restaurants, and other services institutions and transform it into delicious, safe, ready-to-eat meals for the NYC food bank and other social service agencies. The donators get the benefit of a potential tax write-off, so it’s a win-win for everyone. Over the last year the ReThink has worked extremely hard with their team of lawyers and industry professionals to help create a cohesive system that allows them to redistribute all the wonderful excess food in New York City.
Last Monday, May 14th, ReThink held a celebratory gala at the iconic NoMad Hotel. An evening of delicious food, cocktails, and fun ensued. Board members, gave a heartwarming speech stating that, “This is only the beginning, we are going to help a lot more people.” Live entertainment and music was provided by Purr, while delectable food and drink specialties, curated by The NoMad, roamed around all night. A coveted silent auction also took place, with guests bidding on generous gifts and items donated by top restaurant and hospitality groups from all over NYC.
In attendance were a lot of people from the restaurant industry, and after speaking with a few of them, it was apparent that these people truly believe in the organization and the charitable aspect of feeding the 1 in 4 Americans that still go hungry every day. Pietro Collina, the social equity director for the ReThink passionately said that, “We are not about making money, we are all coming with backgrounds in the food and hospitality industry so we know the business, and we just want to help people, that’s why we are a non-profit.”
It was a wonderful night filled with amazing people for an essential cause. All proceeds from the evening are charitable donations and will go toward the continued success and growth of ReThink.

From the fun atmosphere to the charitable cause, the NYSPCC’s annual spring benefit was not one to miss. Though fear not, the NYSPCC is sure to have another spring benefit next year! Be sure to come again around April-May to buy your ticket to support this wonderful organization.
The mission of The NYSPCC is to respond to the complex needs of abused and neglected children, and those involved in their care, by providing best practice counseling, legal, and educational services. Through research, communications and training initiatives, we work to expand these programs to prevent abuse and help more children heal.
The vision of The NYSPCC is for all children to be safe from abuse and neglect. The NYSPCC intends to accomplish this by establishing best practice primary, secondary, and tertiary child abuse and neglect prevention programs that serve the most complex and challenging cases. We can impact the child protection field by establishing a national presence through publication of our work and by teaching and training on local, state, and national levels. By achieving a national presence we will positively impact the lives of countless children and their families.
