The New York Junior League (NYJL) celebrated its 73rd Annual Winter Ball on March 1, 2025, at Cipriani South Street, bringing together nearly 1,000 guests for an evening of philanthropy and celebration.

The New York Junior League (NYJL) celebrated its 73rd Annual Winter Ball on March 1, 2025, at Cipriani South Street, bringing together nearly 1,000 guests for an evening of philanthropy and celebration. This year’s event, themed An Evening in Wonderland, proved to be a historic success, raising approximately $850,000 to support NYJL’s community programs and volunteer training initiatives.

The black-tie gala was hosted by NBC’s TODAY co-anchor Craig Melvin, who led the evening’s festivities, including the presentation of NYJL’s prestigious Outstanding Sustainer and Outstanding Volunteer Awards. The 2025 honorees were Elizabeth King and Gena Lovett, alongside volunteers Sarah Marie Cloonan, Nicole M. Hudak, Michelle LeNoach, Kathleen Z. Li, and Noreen Okarter, recognized for their commitment to the organization’s mission and impact on the community.

A highlight of the evening was a dynamic dance performance by the Harlem School of the Arts, NYJL’s 2024-2025 Community Improvement Project (CIP) partner. The entertainment continued with a highly anticipated live auction led by Erin Ward of Star Benefit Auctions, where guests bid on exclusive experiences such as a luxury stay in St. Barth, a wellness retreat at Canyon Ranch, and a Ferrari test drive experience in Modena, Italy.

As the evening progressed, attendees enjoyed a dazzling waterfront setting, indulging in fine dining, desserts, and dancing to live music from The Midnight Project.

“Winter Ball continues to be a celebration of the NYJL’s deep commitment to the New York City community and the incredible women who make our work possible,” said NYJL President Jeri Powell. “We are profoundly grateful for the support we received this evening, which will help us continue to foster leadership, amplify our impact, and create meaningful change throughout our city.”

The event was made possible by the generosity of corporate sponsors such as Bloomberg Philanthropies, Morgan Stanley, and Marsh McLennan Agency, alongside numerous in-kind sponsors.

Proceeds from the Winter Ball will directly support the NYJL’s advocacy efforts, community outreach programs, and leadership development initiatives. Since 1901, the NYJL has been a driving force for change, mobilizing over 2,500 volunteers to address New York City’s most pressing socioeconomic challenges.

Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education

Casita Maria is a youth, family and community serving arts, culture and education organization in the Hunts Point/Longwood section of the South Bronx. We were established in East Harlem in 1934 by Claire and Elizabeth Sullivan and Sister Mary Imelda who observed waves of Spanish-speaking people pouring in from Puerto Rico in need of essential services.

While settlement houses were in place to address the needs of the poor, this population was made up of predominantly Jewish, Irish, and Italian immigrants. Seeing the disparity and isolation of the newly arriving Spanish-speaking community, Claire, Elizabeth, and Sister Mary provided critical nutrition, housing, childcare, and educational support. What they could not know at the time was that they were championing social justice long before the term was coined for what would become one of America’s most historically marginalized groups.

For 90 years, Casita Maria has expanded its population base to serve all people of color and continues to serve as an oasis, safe haven, and gathering place for hope and enrichment through arts, culture, education, and recreation.  In 2009, Casita Maria inaugurated a state-of-the-art facility encompassing performance spaces, exhibition gallery, dance and music studios, and more on its Simpson Street campus. This 90,000 square foot, six-story educational and cultural facility in collaboration with the Department of Education has enabled Casita Maria to expand its scope and capacities as a beacon of excellence.

“The world desperately needs more art, more creativity, more joy, more dance, more dreamers dreaming dreams”, said Carolina Herrera Creative Director Wes Gordon at Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education’s 2024 Fiesta benefit. “I'm so enormously grateful for Casita Maria’s amazing work, teaching the next generation to dream and create a better world.” Wes was awarded their Gold Medal of Honor, alongside philanthropist Lucy Doughty, and gallerists James J. Borynack and Adolfo Zaralegui (Wally Findlay Galleries International).
Lucy Doughty said, “Live a life of community and you'll be surprised that although we consider being of service as helping others, you’ll come to the realization that being of service is actually a gift you give to yourself. I’m grateful to Casita Maria for this honor, but more importantly, I thank you for honoring and encouraging, with so much care, all the children of Casita Maria, and for acknowledging that all of us have potential, but very few have opportunities.”

James J. Borynack and Adolfo Zaralegui echoed that sentiment, sharing, “Our first thought tonight as we arrived here at this beautiful event was the children and the families that are served by Casita Maria, and we'd like to thank all of you for supporting them and furthering their education and needs.”

LongHouse Reserve 2024 Summer Benefit IMAGINATION

The benefit was a dreamy garden party reimagined for this century. As guests walked in, performers dressed as flourishing plants and butterflies danced around them, with live music by Certain Moves

Tony Bechara and Kenny Scharf Honored Saturday, July 20, 2024

[East Hampton, NY - July 23, 2024] “Tonight, we honor artists Kenny Scharf and Tony Bechara for careers of work that are imaginative”, said Director Carrie Rebora Barratt at LongHouse Reserve’s 2024 Summer Benefit. “LongHouse Founder, Jack Lenor Larsen, was so creative. Our favorite quote of his is ‘be relevant, not reverent’, and I often think, what does change look like here?  As I stand here looking at Kenny,  I think ‘just don't be dull’”.

“Today, like every day at LongHouse, honors and extends Jack Larson's enduring inspiration to live with art in all forms”, said Alexandra Munroe. “So thank you Carrie, President Nina Gillman, LongHouse Trustees, Benefit Chair Anne Erni, emcee Machine Dazzle, and all of you for bringing such life, beauty, and honor to our beloved LongHouse. I've been asked to speak about Yoko Ono because IMAGINE is the theme of this evening's gala. I first learned about Yoko Ono from my sister Victoria. She’d come back and forth from her ongoing schooling in New England, always bringing a new song from this group called, The Beatles. The words ‘Yoko Ono’ were the first words I learned in the Japanese language, which as some of you know, has become my life's work. It was sort of the origin of so much in my work, but also it was the origin story of what became the history of the avant-garde in America, Japan, and around the world. John Lennon once remarked that Yoko was ‘the most famous unknown artist in the world’. Now, I often tell Yoko, as she reaches higher and higher recognition in this century, we have come a long way, baby! Yoko's brilliance eluded the art establishment for a long time. One reason for that was her radical fluency in making art in so many different media. She broke a lot of rules, something she shared with Jack. Yoko’s generosity and optimism to make beauty and life is of course is why Jack and Yoko became friends. Yoko gave LongHouse a gift of the fantastic Play It By Trust giant chess set. She made all the pieces and squares white. What does that mean? What kind of chess player can remember that many spaces and plays? Ultimately, the opposition dissolves. Ultimately, the real victory is unity. That too is very much like Jack. LongHouse also has Yoko's Wish Tree. A work that invites people, in Japanese Shinto Shrine tradition, to write a wish and wrap it around a branch. Yoko and Jack continue to remind us of the highest power of art; to shape our world, to make peace, to overcome opposition through beauty.”

Philanthropist Estrellita Brodsky presented the award to Tony Bechara. “Tony is an accomplished painter, who over the past nearly five decades, has devoted himself to the seemingly random but meticulously programmed language of color exploration. His paintings are reflections of an incredibly intellectual understanding of the traditions of weaving, of phenomenological theories across art histories, and ultimately succeed in challenging our very understanding of visual perception destabilized through a prescient pixelated field…He has been a dear friend, mentor, and advisor, guiding my many decisions, always telling me to say yes, with my best interest at heart. And with the great desire to pursue our common goal, to advocate and to further the arts from Latin America and its diaspora.”

Tony, accepting his award, shared “I have always loved LongHouse because it's a perfect blend of nature and art. We all should support a place like this. It's a treasure, not only for East Hampton, but for New York. It's a treasure. The word magical has been used several times tonight, and I repeat it. It's a magical place.”

“Kenny Scharf is a seriously accomplished artist and a fine human. His work is accessible to pretty much any human living. His projects are generous and inclusive, from his Brooklyn day-glo parties, to phantasmagorical parade vehicles, to KARBOMBZ, that are never for profit. He loves art and humanity, and has always had both feet in the regular world, even with dazzling art world success”, said artist Randy Polumbo. Kenny, in brevity, shared “I just love what I do. Thank you for this honor!” Kenny’s totem sculpture, TOTEMIKON, is currently on display at LongHouse.

Staying on theme, guests dressed in vibrant colors with whimsical accessories, including Daniel Arsham, Dan Brodsky, West Chin, Michele and Marty Cohen, Bonnie Comley and Stewart F. Lane, Angie Cordish, Suzi Cordish, Renee Cox, Edwina von Gal, Tony Ingrao, Laurie Lambrecht, Linda Macklowe, Mark Mennin, Jean Park, Faith Popcorn, Betsy Pinover Schiff, Lee Skolnick, Stanley Stair, Pamela Willoughby, Robert Wilson, as well as board members Patrick Amato, Louis Bradbury, Emma Clurman, Christopher Coy, Sherri Donghia, Dr. Derick T. George, Nina Gillman, Michael Jones, Mark Levine, Raisa Lopez-Rhoden, Peter Olsen, Deborah Nevins, Gael Towey, Suzanne Slesin, Linda Willett, Patti Trainor-Wrazej, James Zajac, and LongHouse President Emerita Dianne Benson

The benefit was a dreamy garden party reimagined for this century. As guests walked in, performers dressed as flourishing plants and butterflies danced around them, with live music by Certain MovesAphrodise sparkling rosé was handed out from white-gloved hands through a lush garden wall. Dinner was the most radical reimagining of all; seven buffets, a raw bar, dinner under the stars (instead of a tent), and a quick program with speedy remarks. The table’s floral arrangements and bouquets for the honorees were hand-clipped by the LongHouse Board of Trustees, from the estate of Alexandra Munroe, on the morning of the benefit. LongHouse’s 16-acre garden was adorned with Paola Lenti luxury Italian furniture - armchairs, sofas, poufs, tables, and parasol umbrellas. The curated contemporary arrangements feature natural woods, rich textures, organic color palettes, as well as weather-resistant fabrics and eco-friendly fibers, which are visually striking, durable, and sustainable. The spaces offered a special respite from the summer sun as it set, and a place to kick back and relax from all the after party dancing. The after party, led by Junior Chair Emma Wrazej, featured dessert tables, and DJ Kristaval kept everyone dancing until the legally mandated curfew of East Hampton. The Junior Committee included Mary Kantor, Vivienne Lange, Owen McGowan, Maude Peter, Paulina Pitt, Will Pitt, Morgan Wilkins, Dakota Wrazej, and Sara Zurmuehle. The evening raised over $800,000, benefiting LongHouse’s educational programs and grounds upkeep.

The benefit’s Artsy art auction included works by Bjorn Amelan, Laurie Anderson, Alice Aycock, Tony Bechara, Mr. Star City, Liz Collins, Michael de Feo, Maryam Eisler, Eric Fischl, Mary Heilmann, Alice Hope, Laurie Lambrecht, Fitzhugh Karol, Oscar Molina, Jeff Muhs, Pat Place, Marcia Resnick, Ugo Rondinone, Toni Ross, Martha Russo, Kenny Schachter, Kenny Scharf, Bastienne Schmidt, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, Agathe Snow, Clintel Steed, Suzannah Wainhouse, Mark Wilson, Robert Wilson, and Almond Zigmund.

LongHouse gratefully thanks all sponsors, including AllianceBernstein, Aphrodise, Blade Urban Air Mobility, Charleigh Charitable Trust, EPIC Insurance, Matchbook Distillery, Marders, J. McLaughlin, Northwestern Mutual, Paola Lenti, Sagg Distillery, John Shea (Senior Partner Twomey, Latham, Shea, Kelley, Dubin, Quartararo, LLP), Topping Rose House, Wölffer Estate Vineyard, and Your Part-Time Controller.

Bechara has participated in group exhibitions at the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, the Whitney Biennial, Boulder Fine Arts, P.S.1, Artists Space, El Museo del Barrio and the Museum of Latin American Art in California, amongst others.

NYJL 72nd Annual Winter Ball

The New York Junior League (NYJL) hosted its 72nd Annual Winter Ball, a black-tie event and the organization's greatest fundraiser, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Cipriani South Street, one of Manhattan's most spectacular event locations

The New York Junior League (NYJL) hosted its 72nd Annual Winter Ball, a black-tie event and the organization's greatest fundraiser, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Cipriani South Street, one of Manhattan's most spectacular event locations. This year's sold-out Winter Ball shattered attendance records and collected more over $700,000, due to generous donors who purchased tickets, corporate sponsorships, individual donations, and participated in a silent and live auction.

This year's Winter Ball celebrated recipients of the NYJL's highest accolades, the Outstanding Sustainer and Outstanding Volunteer Awards, as well as Humanitarian Award recipient Sarah Flint for her philanthropic efforts. Since 1952, the Winter Ball has helped collect critical funding for the NYJL's training and community activities while also bringing together volunteers, family, friends, and supporters for award giving ceremonies.

The evening began with a cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by a delicious three-course dinner, during which attendees watched the awards presentation and live auction. After dinner, guests indulged in sweets before dancing the night away to the strains of Elegant Music Group's The Midnight Project in the gorgeous waterfront backdrop of Cipriani South Street. This year's Winter Ball drew nearly 1,000 guests, including a record number of VIP Harriman Circle clients, to commemorate the NYJL's 123-year history of serving the New York City community.

The NYJL honored recipients of the Outstanding Sustainer and Outstanding Volunteer awards—reserved for women who represent a superior standard of excellence in volunteerism—at Winter Ball. These awards are the organization's highest distinctions. A. Gale Kroeger and Elizabeth Ann Timberman are the 2024 Outstanding Sustainers, and Mona Kelly Lopez, Moriah K. Lutz-Tveite, Susan Timmons Marks, Elizabeth Ann Beller Staryak, and Megan Zuckerman are the 2024 Outstanding Volunteers. These remarkable women are committed to leading by example, helping the communities of New York City and NYJL, and exhibiting the organization's basic principles.

In addition, the NYJL presented a Humanitarian Award to shoe designer Sarah Flint, the creator of her namesake line, in appreciation of her charitable work promoting inclusivity and uplifting women. The Sarah Flint brand will return a portion of its sales proceeds to the NYJL as a way of celebrating this accomplishment.

The dinner reached its climax with renowned auctioneer Sebastian Clarke from Heritage Auctions leading the live auction. Attendees eagerly bid on exclusive experiences and memorabilia, such as "Glamour in Gotham" (a unique Tiffany's flagship experience followed by an evening at The Metropolitan Opera Club), "Toi là! Je t'aime!" (a luxurious week-long stay in St. Barth with WIMCO Villas, Nocturne Luxury Villas Collection), "Luxury Meets the Links" (a stay at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach with a chance to play at The Breakers Palm Beach and The Maidstone Club in East Hampton), and "Paradise Found" (a three-night stay at the Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort in the Bahamas for a family of four). The dinner ended with a captivating performance by violinist Shiann Rose, leading into the Dessert & Dancing segment of the evening.

“The NYJL has made an impact on the New York City community for over 123 years, with our Outstanding Sustainers and Outstanding Volunteers serving as key examples of our organization’s steadfast commitment to training and volunteerism. We are extremely grateful to our generous sponsors, donors, and attendees for supporting Winter Ball and the NYJL,” said NYJL President Serra Eken.

Corporate sponsors included Bloomberg Philanthropies, DíaGen AI, Hellman & Friedman, Merrill, Morgan Stanley, Polestar, Sheffield Haworth, and Solidea Capital. In-kind sponsors included ASD Gems, Beck Bags, Bow Bridge Blooms, Elegant Music Group, Hampton Water, Moët & Chandon, The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort, and WIMCO Villas.

Proceeds from Winter Ball support the NYJL's community and advocacy work and leadership development.

LongHouse Reserve's Annual Summer Benefit; A Midsummer Dream

On July 22nd, 2023, LongHouse Reserve celebrated its annual Summer Benefit honoring the joyful creativity of artist Mary Heilmann and the literary genius of A. M. Homes.

Mary Heilmann and A. M. Homes Honored

On July 22nd, 2023, LongHouse Reserve celebrated its annual Summer Benefit honoring the joyful creativity of artist Mary Heilmann and the literary genius of A. M. Homes. InvitedNYC and guests entered through the sand dunes, into a whimsical world with pop-up performances including stilt walkers, musicians, dancers, a horse rider, a merman in the pool, trapeze aerialists and acrobats roaming the gardens, enhancing the sensual space that is LongHouse. The entire 16-acre grounds were open to discovery with art at every turn, including new works by Wyatt Kahn and Fitzhugh Karol (both in attendance), loans from Daniel Arsham and Ai Weiwei, as well as permanent works by Buckminster Fuller, Sol LeWitt, Yoko Ono and more.

Following an enchanted cocktail party, dinner began with a video of the late LongHouse Founder Jack Lenor Larsen walking the gardens sharing “change involves the new and there’s something magical about the new. Let’s look at what could be done; at what hasn’t been done. How to get away from the ordinary and the conventional, to discover. Let’s do that, even in a small way, and see what we can find.”

Director Carrie Rebora Barratt quoted Eleanor Roosevelt saying “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” as she referenced Jack’s vision for LongHouse. “When I worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I remember Jack visiting from time to time, sitting in our Textile Center, always looking and learning.  He’s created quite a stir, fabulously dressed, so tall, and that voice. Jack was present and thoughtful, local and global, just like the institution he created that we carry on”.

Board President Nina Gillman said “We continue to learn from Jack, and from LongHouse, a magical place in our community that inspires each of us to live with art in all its forms. Jack was endlessly interested in the new and had a fearless love of change.  He often instructed us ‘to be relevant, not reverent’ once he was gone. Since his passing 2 ½ years ago, we have used these words as our guide. This has been a time of enormous change for LongHouse, from a private residence with grounds open part-time to visitors, led by its founder, to a fully public institution with expanded open days and hours, led by board and staff."

Laurie Anderson introduced A.M. and shared a few words about her longtime friend, "Some of A.M’s recent work has been about talking trees, and so it’s great that we’re here at Longhouse, a place that treasures trees and is probably pretty open to what trees might have to say, if they could talk. I first met A.M. in a tree. It was the early ‘80s after a show in Washington and for some reason I was outside trying to climb a tree. A.M. just showed up and we started to talk. I immediately saw her as someone who’s intensely interested in where she is at the moment and able to put that into words. Lately the talking trees are branching out into AI and I’m really happy about that since I think AI is one of the most powerful tools for writers. The language it produces is a mix of moronic and profound.  It’s a little bit like what I imagine the sentences of talking trees will sound like when we finally start to understand what they’re really saying. So I put in the phrase “our friend A.M. and her talking trees” into the supercomputer, ground it through the algorithms, and out came about 9,000 words. I’m going to share a few of these, so here is A.M. in AI.”

A.M. took the stage to share “an odd piece of trivia that I’m sure no one knew when they selected me for this honor. Jack Lenor Larsen has been part of my life since I was 3 days old—literally. In 1960 my parents built a modern glass house at the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C.. At three days old I was carried through the front door; the first thing I passed were beautiful woven curtains—fabric by Jack, and then I was carried down the hall to my parents room and placed on their bed, fabric by Jack, and the drapes in that bedroom, by Jack. My first experiences, my first visions were influenced by Jack. For the entirety of my childhood, I viewed the outside world through the weave of Jack Larsen.”

Artist Almond Zigmund introduced honoree Mary Hailmann, "One of my favorite people and painters. Mary’s work gives you permission to luxuriate in the now.  I don’t surf but I imagine looking at her work is similar to the experience of catching a perfect wave, where the absolute chaos of the ocean and tranquil sublimity of catching the wave are combined and distilled into a perfect gesture.  That is what Mary’s paintings are to me."

2023 Whitney Gala & Studio Party

On Tuesday, May 16th, the Whitney Museum of American Art honored groundbreaking artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, philanthropist and Vice Chair of the Whitney Board Nancy Poses, and Whitney Trustee for over two decades, Thomas E. Tuft, at the 2023 Whitney Gala and Studio Party.

Attendees mingle at the Gala

On Tuesday, May 16th, the Whitney Museum of American Art honored groundbreaking artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, philanthropist and Vice Chair of the Whitney Board Nancy Poses, and Whitney Trustee for over two decades, Thomas E. Tuft, at the 2023 Whitney Gala and Studio Party.

Actress Rowan Blanchard and a friend ordering drinks at the bar

The Studio Party, which acted as an after-party to the more formal Gala dinner, brought youthful energy and excitement to the evening, with a who's who of both the fashion and art world in attendance. Attendees mingled by the bars on the first floor and the paint-can themed DJ booth, relaxing on deep-seated chaises and placing their Maestro Dobel® Tequila cocktails on acrylic tables that easily could have been works of art themselves. In addition to complimenting each other's outfits and dancing to expertly mixed hits, young patrons had the opportunity to visit the new exhibitions on the upper floors.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map

One of the exhibitions on display was the museum's landmark exhibition of "Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map". Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, a citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation, has had an exceptional and unorthodox career as an internationally revered artist, activist, curator, educator, and advocate. Through her drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures, Smith tells stories that challenge commonly held conceptions of historical narratives and shed light on absurdities in the formation of dominant culture. The exhibition, which will be on view until August 13, celebrates fifty years of Smith's work and is the largest and most comprehensive showcase of her career to date, featuring over 130 works. It offers a new framework to consider contemporary Native American art.

Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century

Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century

Another exhibition available for viewing was "Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century". Kline's work utilizes a wide variety of media, from image and video manipulation to sculptural 3D printing, to comment on the current state of American culture through a blunt and critical lens. Some of his most well-known videos use early deep fake software to speculate on the meaning of truth in an era of post-truth propaganda. Kline's practice focuses on work and class, exploring how today's most urgent social and political issues—climate change, automation, disease, and the weakening of democracy—impact the labor force. The exhibition surveys over a decade of the artist's work, including new installations and moving image works that address the climate crisis. These new science-fiction works, presented for the first time at the Whitney, offer a perspective on the hotter, more dangerous future on the horizon from the standpoint of essential workers who will inevitably be left to pick up the pieces. In an era defined by escalating crises, Kline's work provides a visceral warning and calls for a more humane future.

The unforgettable evening brought together young celebrity names like Rowan Blanchard with art legends like Adam Weinberg and Cecilia Alemani, bridging generational gaps to introduce a new wave of art enthusiasts to the captivating world of contemporary art at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
