For the 13th year, Taste of Sunnyside made a comeback on Sunday, October 15th. This year's event included over 50 neighborhood eateries and breweries, along with a block party with live music, a local artists' exhibition, kid-friendly activities, and more on 46th Street between Queens Boulevard and Greenpoint Avenue.
The event's producer, Dirk McCall de PalomĆ”, Executive Director of Sunnyside Shines, said, "Ticket holders traveled between participating restaurants and bars and were treated to a wide variety of tastes of local signature dishes and beers." He went on, "It's fantastic for small business owners to build relationships with their neighbors directly because event attendees got to visit each participating restaurant."
The annual Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District event encourages both locals and tourists to enjoy the neighborhood's unique culinary offerings. Adding to the weekend's activities that united families in support of the community was the presence of regional musicians, artists, and merchants.

Wild Ivy
In Gramercy, Wild Ivy is a stylish new bar and restaurant that's ideal for a first date, a happy hour with coworkers, dinner with friends, or a night out on the town by yourself.
In Gramercy, Wild Ivy is a stylish new bar and restaurant that's ideal for a first date, happy hour with coworkers, dinner with friends, or a night out on the town by yourself. Mick O'Sullivan, proprietor of Bell Book & Candle in the West Village, and Peter O'Connell, owner of Molly's and Malones on Third Avenue, brought Wild Ivy to life.
Start with some Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, Crispy Deviled Eggs, or Mini Meatballs with Chimichurri. The 16-oz grilled ribeye, the grilled cheese and truffle sandwich, and the chicken cordon bleu sandwich are among the larger dishes. Pizzas such as the Italian Flag, which has buffalo mozzarella, tomato, and basil, the Old Stand By, which has Ezzo pepperoni, and the tasty Spicy Meatball with Serrano chile are also available for guests to enjoy. Order a traditional Caesar, a stone fruit mixed green salad, or an heirloom tomato salad for a lighter choice. A comprehensive brunch menu will also be available at Wild Ivy starting at the end of October.
A cocktail menu that honors Wild Ivy's Gramercy location was created by bar director Kelly Jakobs. The color-changing Poison Ivy, which is made with Grey Goose, lemon, and lavender infused with butterfly peas, dill, gin, and ginger; Ruggle's Choice, which combines vodka, Kahlua, espresso, and pumpkin spice; Booth's Hooch, which combines gin, lime, ginger, and beet; and Irresistible Irving, which combines rum, lime, peach, cinnamon, and angostura. Weekly specials include $4 off specialty cocktails, $7 house wine, $6 beers, and $1.50 oysters during happy hour, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m.
All the walls at Wild Ivy are covered in the breathtaking Abstract Expressionist artwork of the late New York City artist Rick Librizzi, who resided at the Chelsea Hotel. Librizzi's art alluded to his contemporaneous relationships with Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The area has large booths, a stunning bar, and sultry low lighting. It has 74 indoor seating capacity.
The bar will be open from 4pm till late, 7 nights per week. Happy hour will be offered on weekdays from 4pm-7pm

BondSt Brings Trendy Dining Experience to Hudson Yards
Grab a seat at the newly opened location of BondSt at Hudson Yards.
BondSt in Hudson Yards just opened a week ago and the secret is out. From opening to our departure at 7pm, this place was packed with clientele from all walks of life. Corporate huddles, intimate dates, family gatherings and us in the corner booth in the middle of the restaurant, overlooking the Vessel during golden hour.
For those that were familiar with Hudson Yards food and beverage offering at itsā start, BondSt took over where Wild Ink left off, making the space their own and bringing their 25 years of expertise with them into the newly developed area. Known for contemporary interpretations of Japanese-inspired cuisine, the menu features something for everyone. Brett Singer, who has been with BondSt for over a decade, is taking the title of Opening Chef for the space, followed by Executive Sous Chef Daniel Su and Louis Smebi will be handling front of house operations
When you come to BondSt, drinks and sharing plates is the way to go. We opted to start with the Yamamomo Framboise and the Toasted Barley Old Fashioned. The first was recommended because it is on the sweeter side, centering around the Japanese Mountain Peach, with St. Germain, raspberry jam, fresh lemongrass and topped with Tattinger Champagne.. The latter was unique because of the Muchicha-infused Makers Mark and walnut bitters, that gave it a little bit of a spin.
For the food, we chose an item from 4 different categories. We began with the popular Big Eye Tuna tarts, which felt like mini pizzas. The white truffle oil definitely was prominent on the dish and the cream ponzu stood up to the tuna displayed on top. We then tried the Seared Salmon Belly, which was beautifully displayed and tasted just as good. We followed this up with the Tuna Crispy Rice, served with Korean Kochujang Sauce. The texture combination of tuna on top and chewy rice was tasty. The last savory item that we had was my favorite and that was the Short Rib Foie Gras Gyoza. A perfect dish for fall, the dumplings were hearty with a bit of texture outside from it being seared and the sour cherries in the plum wine sake sauce was a great compliment to the dish.
We ended on a sweet note with the Bread Pudding, complete with Yamazaki Whiskey Toffee Sauce. Also a recommendation from the expert staff, the dish melts in your mouth and we could not think of finishing our experience any other way.
The new space feature a main dining room,indoor/outdoor patio, 14 seat bar and 10 seat omakase bar, accommodating up to 225 guests at a time. The restaurant s is currently open for dinner service Monday through Saturday, with lunch offerings to follow. For more information or to make a much needed reservation given the traffic we saw on a Wednesday, please visit https://bondstrestaurant.com/reservations/,

Celebrate National Taco Day at Bar Bruno!
National Taco Day is just around the corner on October 4th, 2023! While thereās no shortage of delicious tacos in NYC, Bar Bruno is one of the standouts that we recommend this year.
National Taco Day is just around the corner on October 4th, 2023! While thereās no shortage of delicious tacos in NYC, Bar Bruno is one of the standouts that we recommend this year. With locations in Carroll Gardens and Greenpoint, this hidden gem celebrates the art of taco making and more.
We started off with their signature margaritas and guacamole, which set the tone for a fun and delicious meal. The service was kind and lively and although we went on a Monday night, the vibes were friendly and upbeat. The cucumber margarita was especially delicious, a refreshing fiesta in a glass. It paired well with the bright flavors of the guacamole and crunch of the homemade tortilla chips. We added on some plantains for a sweet side, which were cooked to perfection.
The tacos were authentic and delicious, offering the usual options of carnitas, chicken, veggies, fish, shrimp, and more, each flavor choice seasoned and balanced expertly. Though there were 3 filling tacos in each order, the taste left me craving more even after we had finished them.
Luckily there was more food on the way - we couldn't resist trying the birria pizza. This innovative entree featured layers of tender, flavorful birria meat over a crisp tortilla. Paired with the signature savory birria broth, this dish was nothing short of extraordinary.
Whether youāre stopping by to celebrate National Taco Day, or just heading over for a delicious meal, Bar Bruno goes above and beyond to bring tradition, innovation, and flavor to every bite.

On a sunny day in September, Diner en Blanc carried out their meticulously planned pop-up urban dinner party, complete with 4,000 guests, 250 volunteers and 23 meeting points that ultimately led to this yearās secret location, the Meatpacking District.
Guests carried everything they needed to execute the perfect dinner, from tables to tablecloths, dishes and glasses and immaculate menus and decorations. Pommery Champagne, this yearās bubbly sponsor, was on hand to add some sparkle to the night.
This year was different though because it was the first time that DEB and the Meatpacking District Management Association and the Street Activity Permits Office joined forces to carry out this event. It was also the first time that the event took over multiple city blocks, where everywhere you looked was a sea of white.
The evening included entertainment from Broadway soloists Margot Siebert and Allison Blackwell, a quartet on stilts and a DJ. New York Cityās Mayor Eric Adams even stopped by to show his support to an event that has meant so much to the community for over the past decade. The star of this show is always the fashion though and there was plenty of that!

Dim Sum Palace Opens 8th Location in FiDi with Traditional Chinese Ceremony
Dim Sum Palace had a grand opening ceremony celebrating their 8th location in FiDi
In August 2023, Dim Sum Palace had a grand opening ceremony celebrating their 8th location in FiDi. The party was complete with a ribbon cutting ceremony, drum performance and dragon dance. The street was shut down so locals could take in the entertainment.
Inside the tradition continued with a pig roast setup in front. The restaurant is set up on one side for fast-casual with Dim Sum Sam, which serves dim sum and Hong Kong BBQ, and the Dim Sum Palace provide a more upscale experience on the other side, complete with live seafood tank, fine wine, and elevated Chinese Fusion featuring truffle and caviar infused dishes. Inside there was plenty of seating and private rooms with lazy Susans that made it easy for sharing. Itās great for parties and intimate dinners.
The restaurant chain prides itself in providing an authentic Cantonese dim sum experience. The food definitely spoke to that. Some favorites that we samples included lobster and crab dishes, egg rolls, steamed shrimp dim sum and our favorite, not pictured, was the honey walnut shrimp, a signature dish of Dim Sum Palace. The combination was not something we wouldāve selected on our own but the flavors really worked together!
Dim Sum Palace, opened their first location in New York at in 2016 and has opened 7 other locations across Manhattan since then. The restaurant is open for brunch, lunch and late night, 8am-2am 7 days a week. For more information, please visit https://dimsumpalace.com/.

Empire Steak House 10th Anniversary Celebration
The Midtown West location of Empire Steak House (237 West 54th Street) hosted a special cocktail party on July 19th to commemorate the restaurant's 10th anniversary.
The Midtown West location of Empire Steak House (237 West 54th Street) hosted a special cocktail party on July 19th to commemorate the restaurant's 10th anniversary. The prime dining establishment is renowned for its fine cuisine and opulent setting, right in the center of thriving Times Square. Since a new Empire Steak House recently opened on W. 49th and Broadway, the Sinanaj brothers have even more reason to celebrate this year. A variety of passing hors d'oeuvres were served, including precisely grilled hamburgers, coconut shrimp, and vegetable spring rolls, as well as a selection of beverages and wines.
The Sinanaj brothers' nearly 40-year journey served as the cornerstone for Empire Steak House. In the 1980s, Russ, Jack, and Jeff Sinanaj immigrated to New York City from Montenegro with a fierce work ethic that they attribute to their father. With his brothers by his side, Jack aimed to infuse warmth and hospitality into each restaurant they built after learning the profession at Peter Luger Steak House. Above all, the Sinanaj brothers want you to feel comfortable in their Empire Steak House. Empire Steak House has outlets in Tokyo as well as New York City on E. 50th and W. 54th Streets.
Experience Empire Steak House during the summer. From June 24 through August 20, the restaurant will be a part of NYC Restaurant Week. Discover why this stalwart, famed for its fine dining, opulent setting, and mouthwatering steaks, has been a must-visit location for the past ten years. The Sinanaj brothers' dedication to high quality is demonstrated by the flavor of carefully selected prime beef cuts combined with attentive service. The menu has a delicious variety of well grilled steaks, delectable seafood dishes, and an outstanding choice of great wines and specialty drinks. Their Restaurant Week specials include a $60 dinner deal Monday through Friday and Sunday with entrees like New York Strip Steak and Chicken Parmigiana, as well as a $45 lunch deal with entrees like Filet Mignon and The Empire Burger and decadent desserts like New York Cheesecake and Chocolate Mousse Cake. Don't pass up these discounts, which are offered at both of their locations.

The Revitalized South Street Seaport is a Resilient Neighborhood Worth Exploring
On frequent high school trips to New York City, I recall feeling adventurous straying from Time Square to explore other areas of the Island.
On frequent high school trips to New York City, I recall feeling adventurous straying from Time Square to explore other areas of the Island. As I ventured to Lower Manhattan, I felt the thrill of finding a *fake* Louis Vuitton on Canal Street, seeing the Statue of Liberty and the odoriferous smells that permeated the cobbled streets of the South Street Seaportās Fulton Fish Market.
Moving to the city in my 20ās, I continued to discover these southern Manhattan enclaves, often frequenting South Street Seaport, which for centuries had been a commercial hub for the trade industry. While no longer used as a trading center, ships from this era were still docked in the river and it remained bustling with tourism. I also vividly remember the devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to the historic Seaport district ten years ago, displacing businesses and residences. Now a decade since the super storm rampaged the Seaport, it has risen like a Phoenix from the ashes.
The newest addition to the neighborhood that I just experienced is 33 Seaport and its standalone dining experience, Restaurant Pearl. The 33 Seaport Hotel is a new boutique property in the Seaport. The 66-room hotel exudes intimate luxury and features a collection of eight signature suites with furnished terraces and views of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. The hotel brings the balance of classic comfort and youthful energy for the traveler looking for a fresh yet authentic New York City moment, slightly away from the cityās busy epicenter.
While the hotelās name is derived from its address, the number 33 is rich in symbolism, said to signify new beginnings, creative talents, growth, and abundance. The guest rooms are thoughtfully curated with European-influenced design elements inspired by the history of the surrounding community. Design details include handcrafted teak millwork, white marble, rain showers and handcrafted Italian furnishings. Amenities include a 24/7 fitness center, concierge services and signature amenities such as locally made chocolates and welcome drinks. Hungry hotel guests and locals can expect a unique take on food and beverage at 33 Seaport Hotel with two options.
The hotelās lounge, Jewel Bar, prioritizes an elevated cocktail program with tableside mixology and highly curated drinks in unique glassware paired with small, shareable plates.
The standalone dining experience, Restaurant Pearl, features a Korean-influenced menu. The restaurant embodies a foodieās eclectic take on modern dining within an immersive atmosphere carefully crafted to match the energy of the guests. The room, with about 40 seats, features a distinct bar for a four-guest beverage experience and seasonal outdoor seating along the cobbled road.
The multi-faceted menu has a selection of premium ingredients and a plethora of plant-based offerings. I tried the blue tuna, wagyu beef and mushrooms on a tableside hot stone paired with yuzu and infused oils. The menu also offers a variety of other sharable boards such as: sea (chilled prawns, lobster, king crab, scallop ceviche, mussels, clam), land (cured salami, bresaola, nocchiona, San Danielle, prosciutto, chorizo) and banchan (soybean sprouts, spinach, spicy cucumber salad, zucchini, steamed eggplant, spicy radish salad, cabbage kimchi, braised potatoes) among other items.
The remainder of Restaurant Pearlās menu is divided into four categories: lighter, handheld, roasted and grilled. āLighterā items come in options like gnocchi and cold noodle while āhandheldā includes a Gilgeori toast. A sea bass and a chicken dish are some of the items in the menuās āroastedā section. Proteins such as a wagyu tomahawk and veal chop are some of the stars in the āgrilledā section. I also indulged in the crispy Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich; 14oz Filet with ochujaru hollandaise; and Scallops in brown butter and lemongrass aioli.
The robust beverage menu is built on a strong foundation of mixology. The multicultural focus is memorable, highlighting the Korean influence with a Soju program combining unique flavor profiles and cultures while balancing heritage and home. Itās highly recommended to dip your toe into this Soju drink program and also try other creations in the Old Fashioned and Negroni categories.
Matching the excellence of the menu is the attentive staff. Knowledgeable with an exceptional attention to detail, they elevate the already incredible dining event.
Within a short stroll of the hotel is Pier 17ās scenic waterfront and a labyrinth of winding cobbled roads with hidden gems. Stop by the stately Tin Building by Jean-George with an array of upscale markets, stores and dining experiences as well as Cobble Fish, Tuck Room, Funny Face, The Little Shop speakeasy, McNally Jackson Books and Mure + Grand.

During our visit, the Sasha Berliner quintet graced the stage, filling the room with the lively and alluring melodies of the jazz vibraphone. In its choice of musicians, Smoke often defies the stereotypical image of traditional jazz clubs, often associated with esoteric musicians and complex compositions. Instead, it emanates a youthful and vibrant energy. Sasha Berliner, with her cool and tattooed persona, along with her diverse and spirited backing band, epitomizes the new generation of musicians reinvigorating jazz, making it enjoyable and accessible while maintaining an extremely high level of skill and artistic integrity.

Escape to the Tropics at Gitano Island
Thereās only one word to describe the new Gitano Island beach club on Governorās Island: fabulous. From the delectable cocktails to the elevated decor and the fashion-forward attendees, Gitano Island exudes luxury in every sense of the word.
It may feel very Carrie Bradshaw-esque to say so, but thereās only one word to describe the new Gitano Island beach club: fabulous. From the delectable cocktails to the elevated decor and the fashion-forward attendees, Gitano Island exudes luxury in every sense of the word.
On May 24th, they held their opening night, offering a tantalizing taste of their menu's finest culinary creations and beverages. Our attentive and convivial waiter, Carlos, checked in frequently to ensure our satisfaction and had the astuteness to time our drink orders perfectly, ensuring our glasses were never empty. The dinner menu featured guacamole and cashew snap pea appetizers, a Kampachi tostada and truffle mushroom sopes as starters, Lubina Fish in corn husk and short rib birria as the main course, and a decadent cazuela de chocolate for dessert. The guacamole and fish dishes were the highlights of the evening, with the ceviche-style tostada boasting perfect tartness and refreshment, while the corn husk fish was cooked to flaky perfection. The meal encompassed everything one could desire from a beach club experience.
We had the pleasure of sampling the signature cocktails of the evening: the Gitano margarita, the Disco 75, and the Jungle Fever. Each cocktail skillfully incorporated the familiar flavors of its classic inspiration, but with the unique tropical twist that Gitano is renowned for. The Disco 75, in particular, featured a delightful addition of raspberry extract to balance the original cocktail's usual acidity, resulting in a beautiful pink hue that was incredibly Instagram-friendly. Guests congregated around the bar, located at the heart of the tented dining area, infusing the space with a vibrant and energetic ambiance as bartenders skillfully prepared drinks while engaging in lively conversations with the crowd.
The evening's entertainment was provided by DJ duo The Muses, who seamlessly blended tropical beats with the latest chart-toppers. Several tables near the dance area offered bottle service for those seeking proximity to the action but not partaking in the dinner service. The sandy dance floor was tucked under a canopy of palm trees, providing ample room for revelers to showcase their moves while still fostering an intimate atmosphere that facilitated new friendships and meet-cutes.
Gitano Island is positioning itself as the city's premier destination for birthday parties and summertime celebrations, making it an ideal choice for large groups of friends. Just remember to arrive promptly for the ferry departure, as the scenic ride lasts a mere five minutes, with boats departing every half hour. The club closes at 10 pm and ensures a ferry for all guests to safely return to Manhattan, making it the perfect spot for either an early evening or for pre-clubbing dinner and drinks! Open from 12:00 PM - 10:00 PM Monday - Sunday, reservations can be booked here.
