Empire Steak House 10th Anniversary Celebration

The Midtown West location of Empire Steak House (237 West 54th Street) hosted a special cocktail party on July 19th to commemorate the restaurant's 10th anniversary.

The Midtown West location of Empire Steak House (237 West 54th Street) hosted a special cocktail party on July 19th to commemorate the restaurant's 10th anniversary. The prime dining establishment is renowned for its fine cuisine and opulent setting, right in the center of thriving Times Square. Since a new Empire Steak House recently opened on W. 49th and Broadway, the Sinanaj brothers have even more reason to celebrate this year. A variety of passing hors d'oeuvres were served, including precisely grilled hamburgers, coconut shrimp, and vegetable spring rolls, as well as a selection of beverages and wines.

The Sinanaj brothers' nearly 40-year journey served as the cornerstone for Empire Steak House. In the 1980s, Russ, Jack, and Jeff Sinanaj immigrated to New York City from Montenegro with a fierce work ethic that they attribute to their father. With his brothers by his side, Jack aimed to infuse warmth and hospitality into each restaurant they built after learning the profession at Peter Luger Steak House. Above all, the Sinanaj brothers want you to feel comfortable in their Empire Steak House. Empire Steak House has outlets in Tokyo as well as New York City on E. 50th and W. 54th Streets.

Experience Empire Steak House during the summer. From June 24 through August 20, the restaurant will be a part of NYC Restaurant Week. Discover why this stalwart, famed for its fine dining, opulent setting, and mouthwatering steaks, has been a must-visit location for the past ten years. The Sinanaj brothers' dedication to high quality is demonstrated by the flavor of carefully selected prime beef cuts combined with attentive service. The menu has a delicious variety of well grilled steaks, delectable seafood dishes, and an outstanding choice of great wines and specialty drinks. Their Restaurant Week specials include a $60 dinner deal Monday through Friday and Sunday with entrees like New York Strip Steak and Chicken Parmigiana, as well as a $45 lunch deal with entrees like Filet Mignon and The Empire Burger and decadent desserts like New York Cheesecake and Chocolate Mousse Cake. Don't pass up these discounts, which are offered at both of their locations.

The Revitalized South Street Seaport is a Resilient Neighborhood Worth Exploring

On frequent high school trips to New York City, I recall feeling adventurous straying from Time Square to explore other areas of the Island.

On frequent high school trips to New York City, I recall feeling adventurous straying from Time Square to explore other areas of the Island. As I ventured to Lower Manhattan, I felt the thrill of finding a *fake* Louis Vuitton on Canal Street, seeing the Statue of Liberty and the odoriferous smells that permeated the cobbled streets of the South Street Seaport’s Fulton Fish Market.

Moving to the city in my 20’s, I continued to discover these southern Manhattan enclaves, often frequenting South Street Seaport, which for centuries had been a commercial hub for the trade industry. While no longer used as a trading center, ships from this era were still docked in the river and it remained bustling with tourism. I also vividly remember the devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to the historic Seaport district ten years ago, displacing businesses and residences. Now a decade since the super storm rampaged the Seaport, it has risen like a Phoenix from the ashes.

The newest addition to the neighborhood that I just experienced is 33 Seaport and its standalone dining experience, Restaurant Pearl. The 33 Seaport Hotel is a new boutique property in the Seaport. The 66-room hotel exudes intimate luxury and features a collection of eight signature suites with furnished terraces and views of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. The hotel brings the balance of classic comfort and youthful energy for the traveler looking for a fresh yet authentic New York City moment, slightly away from the city’s busy epicenter.

While the hotel’s name is derived from its address, the number 33 is rich in symbolism, said to signify new beginnings, creative talents, growth, and abundance. The guest rooms are thoughtfully curated with European-influenced design elements inspired by the history of the surrounding community. Design details include handcrafted teak millwork, white marble, rain showers and handcrafted Italian furnishings. Amenities include a 24/7 fitness center, concierge services and signature amenities such as locally made chocolates and welcome drinks. Hungry hotel guests and locals can expect a unique take on food and beverage at 33 Seaport Hotel with two options.

The hotel’s lounge, Jewel Bar, prioritizes an elevated cocktail program with tableside mixology and highly curated drinks in unique glassware paired with small, shareable plates.

The standalone dining experience, Restaurant Pearl, features a Korean-influenced menu. The restaurant embodies a foodie’s eclectic take on modern dining within an immersive atmosphere carefully crafted to match the energy of the guests. The room, with about 40 seats, features a distinct bar for a four-guest beverage experience and seasonal outdoor seating along the cobbled road.

The multi-faceted menu has a selection of premium ingredients and a plethora of plant-based offerings. I tried the blue tuna, wagyu beef and mushrooms on a tableside hot stone paired with yuzu and infused oils. The menu also offers a variety of other sharable boards such as: sea (chilled prawns, lobster, king crab, scallop ceviche, mussels, clam), land (cured salami, bresaola, nocchiona, San Danielle, prosciutto, chorizo) and banchan (soybean sprouts, spinach, spicy cucumber salad, zucchini, steamed eggplant, spicy radish salad, cabbage kimchi, braised potatoes) among other items.

The remainder of Restaurant Pearl’s menu is divided into four categories: lighter, handheld, roasted and grilled. “Lighter” items come in options like gnocchi and cold noodle while “handheld” includes a Gilgeori toast. A sea bass and a chicken dish are some of the items in the menu’s “roasted” section. Proteins such as a wagyu tomahawk and veal chop are some of the stars in the “grilled” section.  I also indulged in the crispy Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich; 14oz Filet with ochujaru hollandaise; and Scallops in brown butter and lemongrass aioli.

The robust beverage menu is built on a strong foundation of mixology. The multicultural focus is memorable, highlighting the Korean influence with a Soju program combining unique flavor profiles and cultures while balancing heritage and home. It’s highly recommended to dip your toe into this Soju drink program and also try other creations in the Old Fashioned and Negroni categories.

Matching the excellence of the menu is the attentive staff. Knowledgeable with an exceptional attention to detail, they elevate the already incredible dining event.

Within a short stroll of the hotel is Pier 17’s scenic waterfront and a labyrinth of winding cobbled roads with hidden gems. Stop by the stately Tin Building by Jean-George with an array of upscale markets, stores and dining experiences as well as Cobble Fish, Tuck Room, Funny Face, The Little Shop speakeasy, McNally Jackson Books and Mure + Grand.

On Thursday, June 29th, 2023, the Louis Armstrong House Museum unveiled the highly anticipated Louis Armstrong Center. The day was filled with music and festivities, capturing the essence of the legendary jazz musician's legacy.

The new Louis Armstrong Center in Corona, Queens, is poised to expand the museum's vision of preserving Armstrong's profound impact on music while bringing an abundance of music, fun, and education to the local community. The Center will offer a range of activities including performances, lectures, films, and exciting experiences for K-12 students. Notably, the Center will provide trumpet lessons, a tribute to the generous donation made by the Karnofsky family, who helped Louis Armstrong acquire his first trumpet.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony commenced with a series of impassioned remarks from esteemed government officials, community leaders, and artistic partners. Their words echoed the profound significance of the new Center for the Queens community and its potential to serve as a global landmark, immortalizing Armstrong's legacy. Prominent speakers included Regina Bain, the Executive Director of the Louis Armstrong Center, Council Member Francisco Moya, NYC Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Lori Cambo, Chancellor Felix V. Matos Rodriguez, Queens College President Frank Wu, Executive Director of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation Jackie Harris, Chair of Queens Community Board 3 Frank Taylor, Director of Archival Collections Ricky Riccardi, and Curator of the Here to Stay exhibition Jason Moran. Throughout their addresses, the speakers emphasized the years of meticulous work invested in bringing the Louis Armstrong Center to life, underscoring the importance of fostering inclusive communities, education, and the universal language of music.

NYC Commissioner Lori Cambo passes the microphone to two young boys, allowing them to share their experience of living on the same street as the iconic Louis Armstrong Center.

Following the heartfelt speeches, the crowd rose from their seats, captivated by the enchanting sounds of trumpeters. They joined the procession, marching across the street from the Historic House Museum to the entrance of the Louis Armstrong Center, where a new exhilarating musical surprise awaited them. The award-winning jazz pianist Jason Moran graced the occasion with a mesmerizing solo piano performance, setting the stage for the ceremonial ribbon cutting that would soon follow.

Jason Moran shares a few words after his solo piano performance.

As the ribbon was ceremoniously cut, guests were welcomed into the extraordinary Louis Armstrong Center, a state-of-the-art building that houses the awe-inspiring 700-piece Louis Armstrong Archive. This impressive collection stands as the largest archive dedicated to a jazz musician in the world. Stepping inside, visitors were greeted by the art exhibition Here To Stay, curated by Jason Moran, the Artistic Director for Jazz at The Kennedy Center. In an adjoining room, a 75-seat performance space awaited, where students from Frank Sinatra High School showcased their talent, delivering a captivating jazz performance. This vibrant display served as a reminder that Louis Armstrong's spirit and influence continue to thrive, resonating with audiences of all generations.

The Louis Armstrong House Museum's ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Louis Armstrong Center was a testament to the enduring power of music and the remarkable vision of those dedicated to preserving Armstrong's legacy. As the Center opens its doors to the community, it promises to be a haven for inspiration, education, and the celebration of an extraordinary musical genius.

During our visit, the Sasha Berliner quintet graced the stage, filling the room with the lively and alluring melodies of the jazz vibraphone. In its choice of musicians, Smoke often defies the stereotypical image of traditional jazz clubs, often associated with esoteric musicians and complex compositions. Instead, it emanates a youthful and vibrant energy. Sasha Berliner, with her cool and tattooed persona, along with her diverse and spirited backing band, epitomizes the new generation of musicians reinvigorating jazz, making it enjoyable and accessible while maintaining an extremely high level of skill and artistic integrity.

Escape to the Tropics at Gitano Island

There’s only one word to describe the new Gitano Island beach club on Governor’s Island: fabulous. From the delectable cocktails to the elevated decor and the fashion-forward attendees, Gitano Island exudes luxury in every sense of the word.

It may feel very Carrie Bradshaw-esque to say so, but there’s only one word to describe the new Gitano Island beach club: fabulous. From the delectable cocktails to the elevated decor and the fashion-forward attendees, Gitano Island exudes luxury in every sense of the word.

On May 24th, they held their opening night, offering a tantalizing taste of their menu's finest culinary creations and beverages. Our attentive and convivial waiter, Carlos, checked in frequently to ensure our satisfaction and had the astuteness to time our drink orders perfectly, ensuring our glasses were never empty. The dinner menu featured guacamole and cashew snap pea appetizers, a Kampachi tostada and truffle mushroom sopes as starters, Lubina Fish in corn husk and short rib birria as the main course, and a decadent cazuela de chocolate for dessert. The guacamole and fish dishes were the highlights of the evening, with the ceviche-style tostada boasting perfect tartness and refreshment, while the corn husk fish was cooked to flaky perfection. The meal encompassed everything one could desire from a beach club experience.

We had the pleasure of sampling the signature cocktails of the evening: the Gitano margarita, the Disco 75, and the Jungle Fever. Each cocktail skillfully incorporated the familiar flavors of its classic inspiration, but with the unique tropical twist that Gitano is renowned for. The Disco 75, in particular, featured a delightful addition of raspberry extract to balance the original cocktail's usual acidity, resulting in a beautiful pink hue that was incredibly Instagram-friendly. Guests congregated around the bar, located at the heart of the tented dining area, infusing the space with a vibrant and energetic ambiance as bartenders skillfully prepared drinks while engaging in lively conversations with the crowd.

The evening's entertainment was provided by DJ duo The Muses, who seamlessly blended tropical beats with the latest chart-toppers. Several tables near the dance area offered bottle service for those seeking proximity to the action but not partaking in the dinner service. The sandy dance floor was tucked under a canopy of palm trees, providing ample room for revelers to showcase their moves while still fostering an intimate atmosphere that facilitated new friendships and meet-cutes.

Gitano Island is positioning itself as the city's premier destination for birthday parties and summertime celebrations, making it an ideal choice for large groups of friends. Just remember to arrive promptly for the ferry departure, as the scenic ride lasts a mere five minutes, with boats departing every half hour. The club closes at 10 pm and ensures a ferry for all guests to safely return to Manhattan, making it the perfect spot for either an early evening or for pre-clubbing dinner and drinks! Open from 12:00 PM - 10:00 PM Monday - Sunday, reservations can be booked here.

2023 Whitney Gala & Studio Party

On Tuesday, May 16th, the Whitney Museum of American Art honored groundbreaking artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, philanthropist and Vice Chair of the Whitney Board Nancy Poses, and Whitney Trustee for over two decades, Thomas E. Tuft, at the 2023 Whitney Gala and Studio Party.

Attendees mingle at the Gala

On Tuesday, May 16th, the Whitney Museum of American Art honored groundbreaking artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, philanthropist and Vice Chair of the Whitney Board Nancy Poses, and Whitney Trustee for over two decades, Thomas E. Tuft, at the 2023 Whitney Gala and Studio Party.

Actress Rowan Blanchard and a friend ordering drinks at the bar

The Studio Party, which acted as an after-party to the more formal Gala dinner, brought youthful energy and excitement to the evening, with a who's who of both the fashion and art world in attendance. Attendees mingled by the bars on the first floor and the paint-can themed DJ booth, relaxing on deep-seated chaises and placing their Maestro Dobel® Tequila cocktails on acrylic tables that easily could have been works of art themselves. In addition to complimenting each other's outfits and dancing to expertly mixed hits, young patrons had the opportunity to visit the new exhibitions on the upper floors.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map

One of the exhibitions on display was the museum's landmark exhibition of "Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map". Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, a citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation, has had an exceptional and unorthodox career as an internationally revered artist, activist, curator, educator, and advocate. Through her drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures, Smith tells stories that challenge commonly held conceptions of historical narratives and shed light on absurdities in the formation of dominant culture. The exhibition, which will be on view until August 13, celebrates fifty years of Smith's work and is the largest and most comprehensive showcase of her career to date, featuring over 130 works. It offers a new framework to consider contemporary Native American art.

Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century

Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century

Another exhibition available for viewing was "Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century". Kline's work utilizes a wide variety of media, from image and video manipulation to sculptural 3D printing, to comment on the current state of American culture through a blunt and critical lens. Some of his most well-known videos use early deep fake software to speculate on the meaning of truth in an era of post-truth propaganda. Kline's practice focuses on work and class, exploring how today's most urgent social and political issues—climate change, automation, disease, and the weakening of democracy—impact the labor force. The exhibition surveys over a decade of the artist's work, including new installations and moving image works that address the climate crisis. These new science-fiction works, presented for the first time at the Whitney, offer a perspective on the hotter, more dangerous future on the horizon from the standpoint of essential workers who will inevitably be left to pick up the pieces. In an era defined by escalating crises, Kline's work provides a visceral warning and calls for a more humane future.

The unforgettable evening brought together young celebrity names like Rowan Blanchard with art legends like Adam Weinberg and Cecilia Alemani, bridging generational gaps to introduce a new wave of art enthusiasts to the captivating world of contemporary art at the Whitney Museum of American Art.

ON SALVO/DE SALVO: A New Monograph for a Multifaceted Artist

On Thursday, May 18th, the Center for Italian Modern Art or CIMA presented IO SONO SALVO: Works and Writings 1961-2015 (NERO Editions, 2023), a new monograph dedicated to the artist Salvo (1947-2015). Serving as a self-portrait, this captivating tome is the story of the artist's practice through his artworks and words.

The comprehensive selection of his works, arranged chronologically, is accompanied by a collection of writings, including his treatise On Painting, unpublished texts, and various interviews conducted over the years.

Hailing from Leonforte, Sicily, Salvo relocated to Turin in 1956, where he embarked on a conceptual exploration influenced by Arte Povera and artists such as Sol LeWitt, Robert Barry, and Joseph Kosuth, with whom he had direct encounters. In 1973, Salvo experienced a "return to painting," a medium he had initially practiced during his early years of training, which at the time was considered unconventional. Rather than viewing painting in opposition to the language of conceptual art, Salvo seamlessly merged the two throughout his fifty-year career, engaging in a personal research endeavor that maintained a constant dialogue with the past.

The evening's event offered light refreshments and wine and featured an engaging conversation between Bob Nickas, the author of one of the critical essays published in the monograph, and CIMA Fellow Giorgio Di Domenico. With the additional participation of CIMA Executive Director Nicola Lucchi, they delved into a visual journey of Salvo's iconic and diverse works, exploring his artistic motivations, techniques, personality, and the profound impact they had on his art. By contrasting Salvo's pieces with other contemporary works and even with each other, both speakers provided a more grounded perspective on the larger-than-life character of the artist.

The monograph is available for purchase at CIMA, and upcoming events held at the space can be seen here: https://www.italianmodernart.org/upcoming-events/

Opening Night @giselle, the Technology-Infused Ballet

This production, presented by Joshua Beamish/MOVETHECOMPANY, puts a modern spin on the original classical ballet, Reimagining Giselle, a shorter work commissioned by The Royal Ballet in London, presenting this story of love and relationships in the context of a world dominated by dating apps, digital illusions, and fleeting encounters.

@giselle, a technology-driven, contemporary reinvention of the beloved romantic ballet classic, premiered Thursday, May 18, at The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College.

@giselle tells the story of a young woman named Giselle who is betrayed, isolated, and ghosted by her romantic partner on social media. In a state of extreme anxiety, Giselle livestreams her death and later returns to haunt her male tormentors in the form of breathtaking motion-captured holograms projected onto the bodies of live dancers, creating a haunting tension between live and digital realities.

Brianna Amore is the mastermind behind the stunning animation and projection design that enthralls the audience throughout the production, leaving many unsure if a dancer or a life-like hologram are on the stage.

@giselle: Modernizing a Classic Ballet

Giselle is one of the oldest and most iconic ballets - if you are remotely involved in dance you know it well, and even if you think that you’ve never heard of it, the music generates familiar sparks in the back of your memory.

Giselle is one of the oldest and most iconic ballets - if you are remotely involved in dance you know it well, and even if you think that you’ve never heard of it, the music generates familiar sparks in the back of your memory.  Adapting such a beloved ballet for the modern era poses a challenging task. Joshua Beamish took on this challenge with his new interpretation, @giselle, which brings the story of Giselle to the present day.

Originating from "Reimagining Giselle," a shorter work commissioned by The Royal Ballet in London, this full-length narrative production will be brought to life by some of the brightest stars in the ballet world. Betsy McBride, soloist with American Ballet Theatre, will perform the title role of Giselle, alongside Harrison James, principal dancer with The National Ballet of Canada, as Albrecht, and Sterling Baca, principal dancer with Philadelphia Ballet, as Hilarion. Fangqi Li from ABT will portray Bathilde, and Beverley Bagg, formerly with Ballet Frankfurt and PACT Ballet Johannesburg, will portray Berthe. The all-star ensemble will be supported by additional talented dancers from Canada and the US.

This innovative production explores connections between the original classical ballet and our understandings of love, sex, and relationships in a world mediated by dating apps, digital illusions, and fleeting encounters. Beamish takes the story's context on a contemporary and relatable journey, including transforming Albrecht's monarchical power into one of "Influencer" currency and social media clout.

The modern vision of this classic tale isn't limited to the plot - The show and choreography also incorporate groundbreaking visuals. @giselle features stunning animation and projection design by trans artist and activist Brianna Amore, along with motion capture technology. In a reinterpretation of a famous pas de deux in which Giselle's ghost haunts her male tormentors, motion-captured holograms projected onto live dancers create a haunting tension between live and digital realities.

This unique and innovative show is a must-see for ballet lovers and anyone seeking a modern and approachable dance performance with a strong and important message.

@giselle will run on May 18th & 19th at at 7:30pm at The Gerald W. Lynch Theater, co-presented by The CUNY Dance Initiative and The Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College (524 West 59th Street, NYC).  The opening night performance & celebration reception will be on May 18th, with tax-deductible charitable tickets available: https://tickets.broadwaycares.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=ticket.start&eventID=718.

Tickets for the show range between $55/$45/$35 (plus applicable fees) and $15 student tickets with promocode: GISELLESTUDENT
