Enjoy Lobster Newberg at Delmonico’s - NYC
Delmonico's, America’s first fine-dining restaurant, established in 1837, is a cornerstone of American dining and a pioneer in the restaurant industry, and is known for its innovative cuisine.. The historic restaurant is credited with introducing several iconic dishes to the culinary world, including the Delmonico Steak, Baked Alaska, Eggs Benedict, and the famous Lobster Newberg. A rich and creamy lobster dish, today’s version is prepared with cognac, tarragon, lobster coral, and charred sticky rice.
This historic dish originally appeared on Delmonico’s menu in 1876 as “Lobster a la Wenberg.” The now-famous dish was created by Captain Ben Wenberg. After Wenberg discussed his creation with Charles Delmonico, Delmonico was so intrigued that he brought a chafing dish tableside and asked Wenberg to prepare the dish on the spot. Later, the story goes, Delmonico and Wenberg had a falling out, but by then the dish was a favorite, so it remained on the menu under a new name: Delmonico quietly rearranged the letters to make it Lobster Newberg.
