There’s nothing in the city quite like The Red Pavilion. The Asian Neo-Noir cabaret and nightclub in Bushwick had to celebrate that fact by going all out for their one-year anniversary on May 1st.
For the past year, the venue has created a lot of buzz in New York’s AAPI community and beyond for its dynamic range of events that put Asian performers, artists and culture in the spotlight. The anniversary party felt like a highlight reel of just that. Sultry songs played by the AAPI Jazz Collective set the mood for the night, along with aerial hoop and silk performances and over-the-top burlesque dances.
All these performances paired very well with a cocktail. The Red Pavilion’s unique drink menu features Wuism-inspired cocktails, referencing the Chinese shamanic practice. (Yes, alcohol can be medicine too!) Classic Asian ingredients are creatively used in drinks like The Red Dragon, a fiery mix of tequila, tamarind, and blood orange with a Sichuan chili powder and poppy seed rim.
The anniversary also coincided with the start of AAPI Heritage month. Founder Shien Lee first created The Red Pavilion in response to the wave of violence against the AAPI community during the Covid-19 pandemic, wanting a place for the community to safely express and celebrate themselves.
“I myself was assaulted in the subway which I believe was an Asian hate crime,” said Shien Lee as she thanked the crowd for their support. “After that I was resolved to create a space that would be a beacon of cultural resilience, of community, a place of healing where we could elevate and empower Asian artists to share all their gifts with you.”

The Red Pavilion will continue celebrating AAPI Heritage month with events throughout May, including live jazz, dance parties, cabaret performances and more. Learn more and get tickets at https://www.instagram.com/redpavilionbk/.

Fiori del Giardino: An Exhibition by Paulette Tavormina
Photographer Paulette Tavormina opens her latest exhibition, Fiori del Giardino, with a party in the heart of the Chelsea Arts District at the Winston Wächter Fine Art gallery.
Photographer Paulette Tavormina opened her latest exhibition, Fiori del Giardino, with a party in the heart of the Chelsea Arts District at the Winston Wächter Fine Art gallery. Paulette creates still life photographs in the style of Golden Age Dutch old masters. She’s inspired by techniques such as Adriaen Coorte’s attention to the positioning of objects, Giovanna Garzoni’s compositions and color palette, and Zurbarán’s attention to lighting. To create her images, Paulette often works against the clock with freshly picked flowers and fruit from her garden--- or as the old masters did, she sometimes substitutes plaster fruit and silk flowers.
Guests gathered to see the striking images and toast the artist. Paulette was joined by her husband, Paul Pfeiffer, and the gallery’s co-owner Christine Wächter-Campbell, director Madeline Cornell, as well as Jeffrey Caik, Fran Degni, Gigi Fava, Wendy Fogel, Sigi Jaeckel, Amy Jaffe, Michele Gerber Klein, Kevin Kelly, Justin King, Jerry Leiner, William Maier, Val Paverd, August Pross, Tori Ratty, Gillian and Jim Reynolds, Jane Sherman, Harriet Walley, and many more.
On December 16th, Paulette will be joined by Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings Specialist David Pollack, Photo Historian Gail Buckland, and Winston Wächter Fine Art Director Madeline Cornell for a conversation about Modern Still Life Photography: A Tribute to the Old Masters. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition, Fiori del Giardino, will run until January 6, 2024.

An (Inter)Steller Experience: 'Beyond the Light' by NASA + ARTECHOUSE
You may be asking – what is ARTECHOUSE? They are an innovative pioneer of digital and experiential art using cutting edge technology-forward exhibitions.
You may be asking – what is ARTECHOUSE? They are an innovative pioneer of digital and experiential art using cutting edge technology-forward exhibitions. Since opening a NYC location (Chelsea Market) in 2019, the team has continued to redefine the way art is experienced.
For this installation, ARTECHOUSE teamed with NASA to help visitors ignite their imagination beyond what is visible, and dive into the far-flung depths of the universe. This original artistic venture aims to tell the story of how innovation has allowed humans to see far into the cosmos by bringing to life -- in high resolution -- the data NASA has collected. The exhibition submerges you into a story of what has been learned about the universe over the decades and what still seems to be unknown.
ARTECHOUSE uses the latest creative technologies and experiential storytelling to fully immerse the audience. This includes AI-aided visual production, an original musical score created from galactic data, and imagery and findings from the James Webb Space Telescope. The concept takes up two floors of a 100-year-old boiler building beneath Chelsea market. The top floor houses a galactic bar with a fun interactive component and six educational installations that look at the moon, heliophysics, climate science, the biosphere and NASA Spinoffs.
The main exhibition is just down the stairs and is comprised of a 25-minute cinematic visual and musical experience chronicling how the world has observed and experienced light throughout history. The original score is playing all around you as imagery is projected on the walls and the floor. Choose to stand, lean against a pole, grab a seat on the bench or even lay down. It’s your journey and you can stay as long as you wish.
ARTECHOUSE is located in Chelsea at 439 West 15th Street. General admission starts at $25 and Beyond the Light will run through November 5. Cover image from the ARTECHOUSE team.

Following an enchanted cocktail party, dinner began with a video of the late LongHouse Founder Jack Lenor Larsen walking the gardens sharing “change involves the new and there’s something magical about the new. Let’s look at what could be done; at what hasn’t been done. How to get away from the ordinary and the conventional, to discover. Let’s do that, even in a small way, and see what we can find.”
Director Carrie Rebora Barratt quoted Eleanor Roosevelt saying “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams” as she referenced Jack’s vision for LongHouse. “When I worked at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I remember Jack visiting from time to time, sitting in our Textile Center, always looking and learning. He’s created quite a stir, fabulously dressed, so tall, and that voice. Jack was present and thoughtful, local and global, just like the institution he created that we carry on”.

Board President Nina Gillman said “We continue to learn from Jack, and from LongHouse, a magical place in our community that inspires each of us to live with art in all its forms. Jack was endlessly interested in the new and had a fearless love of change. He often instructed us ‘to be relevant, not reverent’ once he was gone. Since his passing 2 ½ years ago, we have used these words as our guide. This has been a time of enormous change for LongHouse, from a private residence with grounds open part-time to visitors, led by its founder, to a fully public institution with expanded open days and hours, led by board and staff."

Laurie Anderson introduced A.M. and shared a few words about her longtime friend, "Some of A.M’s recent work has been about talking trees, and so it’s great that we’re here at Longhouse, a place that treasures trees and is probably pretty open to what trees might have to say, if they could talk. I first met A.M. in a tree. It was the early ‘80s after a show in Washington and for some reason I was outside trying to climb a tree. A.M. just showed up and we started to talk. I immediately saw her as someone who’s intensely interested in where she is at the moment and able to put that into words. Lately the talking trees are branching out into AI and I’m really happy about that since I think AI is one of the most powerful tools for writers. The language it produces is a mix of moronic and profound. It’s a little bit like what I imagine the sentences of talking trees will sound like when we finally start to understand what they’re really saying. So I put in the phrase “our friend A.M. and her talking trees” into the supercomputer, ground it through the algorithms, and out came about 9,000 words. I’m going to share a few of these, so here is A.M. in AI.”
A.M. took the stage to share “an odd piece of trivia that I’m sure no one knew when they selected me for this honor. Jack Lenor Larsen has been part of my life since I was 3 days old—literally. In 1960 my parents built a modern glass house at the edge of Rock Creek Park in Washington D.C.. At three days old I was carried through the front door; the first thing I passed were beautiful woven curtains—fabric by Jack, and then I was carried down the hall to my parents room and placed on their bed, fabric by Jack, and the drapes in that bedroom, by Jack. My first experiences, my first visions were influenced by Jack. For the entirety of my childhood, I viewed the outside world through the weave of Jack Larsen.”
Artist Almond Zigmund introduced honoree Mary Hailmann, "One of my favorite people and painters. Mary’s work gives you permission to luxuriate in the now. I don’t surf but I imagine looking at her work is similar to the experience of catching a perfect wave, where the absolute chaos of the ocean and tranquil sublimity of catching the wave are combined and distilled into a perfect gesture. That is what Mary’s paintings are to me."

On Thursday, June 29th, 2023, the Louis Armstrong House Museum unveiled the highly anticipated Louis Armstrong Center. The day was filled with music and festivities, capturing the essence of the legendary jazz musician's legacy.
The new Louis Armstrong Center in Corona, Queens, is poised to expand the museum's vision of preserving Armstrong's profound impact on music while bringing an abundance of music, fun, and education to the local community. The Center will offer a range of activities including performances, lectures, films, and exciting experiences for K-12 students. Notably, the Center will provide trumpet lessons, a tribute to the generous donation made by the Karnofsky family, who helped Louis Armstrong acquire his first trumpet.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony commenced with a series of impassioned remarks from esteemed government officials, community leaders, and artistic partners. Their words echoed the profound significance of the new Center for the Queens community and its potential to serve as a global landmark, immortalizing Armstrong's legacy. Prominent speakers included Regina Bain, the Executive Director of the Louis Armstrong Center, Council Member Francisco Moya, NYC Commissioner for Cultural Affairs Lori Cambo, Chancellor Felix V. Matos Rodriguez, Queens College President Frank Wu, Executive Director of the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation Jackie Harris, Chair of Queens Community Board 3 Frank Taylor, Director of Archival Collections Ricky Riccardi, and Curator of the Here to Stay exhibition Jason Moran. Throughout their addresses, the speakers emphasized the years of meticulous work invested in bringing the Louis Armstrong Center to life, underscoring the importance of fostering inclusive communities, education, and the universal language of music.
NYC Commissioner Lori Cambo passes the microphone to two young boys, allowing them to share their experience of living on the same street as the iconic Louis Armstrong Center.
Following the heartfelt speeches, the crowd rose from their seats, captivated by the enchanting sounds of trumpeters. They joined the procession, marching across the street from the Historic House Museum to the entrance of the Louis Armstrong Center, where a new exhilarating musical surprise awaited them. The award-winning jazz pianist Jason Moran graced the occasion with a mesmerizing solo piano performance, setting the stage for the ceremonial ribbon cutting that would soon follow.
Jason Moran shares a few words after his solo piano performance.
As the ribbon was ceremoniously cut, guests were welcomed into the extraordinary Louis Armstrong Center, a state-of-the-art building that houses the awe-inspiring 700-piece Louis Armstrong Archive. This impressive collection stands as the largest archive dedicated to a jazz musician in the world. Stepping inside, visitors were greeted by the art exhibition Here To Stay, curated by Jason Moran, the Artistic Director for Jazz at The Kennedy Center. In an adjoining room, a 75-seat performance space awaited, where students from Frank Sinatra High School showcased their talent, delivering a captivating jazz performance. This vibrant display served as a reminder that Louis Armstrong's spirit and influence continue to thrive, resonating with audiences of all generations.
The Louis Armstrong House Museum's ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Louis Armstrong Center was a testament to the enduring power of music and the remarkable vision of those dedicated to preserving Armstrong's legacy. As the Center opens its doors to the community, it promises to be a haven for inspiration, education, and the celebration of an extraordinary musical genius.

On Tuesday, May 16th, the Whitney Museum of American Art honored groundbreaking artist Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, philanthropist and Vice Chair of the Whitney Board Nancy Poses, and Whitney Trustee for over two decades, Thomas E. Tuft, at the 2023 Whitney Gala and Studio Party.

Actress Rowan Blanchard and a friend ordering drinks at the bar
The Studio Party, which acted as an after-party to the more formal Gala dinner, brought youthful energy and excitement to the evening, with a who's who of both the fashion and art world in attendance. Attendees mingled by the bars on the first floor and the paint-can themed DJ booth, relaxing on deep-seated chaises and placing their Maestro Dobel® Tequila cocktails on acrylic tables that easily could have been works of art themselves. In addition to complimenting each other's outfits and dancing to expertly mixed hits, young patrons had the opportunity to visit the new exhibitions on the upper floors.
Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map
One of the exhibitions on display was the museum's landmark exhibition of "Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map". Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, a citizen of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation, has had an exceptional and unorthodox career as an internationally revered artist, activist, curator, educator, and advocate. Through her drawings, prints, paintings, and sculptures, Smith tells stories that challenge commonly held conceptions of historical narratives and shed light on absurdities in the formation of dominant culture. The exhibition, which will be on view until August 13, celebrates fifty years of Smith's work and is the largest and most comprehensive showcase of her career to date, featuring over 130 works. It offers a new framework to consider contemporary Native American art.
Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century
Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century
Another exhibition available for viewing was "Josh Kline: Project for a New American Century". Kline's work utilizes a wide variety of media, from image and video manipulation to sculptural 3D printing, to comment on the current state of American culture through a blunt and critical lens. Some of his most well-known videos use early deep fake software to speculate on the meaning of truth in an era of post-truth propaganda. Kline's practice focuses on work and class, exploring how today's most urgent social and political issues—climate change, automation, disease, and the weakening of democracy—impact the labor force. The exhibition surveys over a decade of the artist's work, including new installations and moving image works that address the climate crisis. These new science-fiction works, presented for the first time at the Whitney, offer a perspective on the hotter, more dangerous future on the horizon from the standpoint of essential workers who will inevitably be left to pick up the pieces. In an era defined by escalating crises, Kline's work provides a visceral warning and calls for a more humane future.
The unforgettable evening brought together young celebrity names like Rowan Blanchard with art legends like Adam Weinberg and Cecilia Alemani, bridging generational gaps to introduce a new wave of art enthusiasts to the captivating world of contemporary art at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
