Farm to People

In the past, summer meant visiting the farmers' market and meandering among stalls brimming with colorful fruit, getting free samples, and talking to farmers who could explain exactly how they cultivated their food.

In the past, summer meant visiting the farmers' market and meandering among stalls brimming with colorful fruit, getting free samples, and talking to farmers who could explain exactly how they cultivated their food. Even though the pandemic has been abating, our purchasing patterns have been permanently altered because we now frequently order items online or over the phone in place of going to a physical store. There isn't anything that can replace the tradition of buying your own vegetables at the farmers' market, but there is a delivery service that comes very close.

Brooklyn-based Farm to People offers the greenmarket experience without you ever having to leave your apartment. Produce CSAs (community-supported agriculture) of all sizes are delivered by Farm to People to Manhattan, as well as select areas of Brooklyn and Queens. The boxes can include produce that is in season and organic, as well as protein and supplies. Produce, in particular, comes from farms that are free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs), organic, and regenerative. One of the best things about Farm to People is that they pay their farmers $0.50 for every $1 sold on average (higher than the $0.13 per consumer $1 spent that farmers collect through traditional retail channels). You have the option of purchasing products à la carte or subscribing to a service, in which case you can remove items you aren't interested in and add others.

Michael Robinov

Michael Robinov, along with his father, David Robinov, and cofounder Anina von Haeften, established Farm to People in 2013. Michael Robinov was inspired to start the company after spending time working at the Union Square farmers’ market in New York City while he was a high school student. He was also influenced by his father, who was a pioneer in the natural food scene.

Farm to People has also launched Farm to People Kitchen & Bar, a restaurant serving the same premium, freshly chosen foods that consumers have come to love since its founding. A network of over 150 farms provides the ingredients for the cuisine at the restaurant. The space is the antithesis of the "dark store" movement and invites people to dine in, in an effort to further connect them with their food. Chef Matt's menu includes items like a Sumac Smash Burger, Yuzu Tarragon Potato Salad, Baby Gem Salad, lots of natural wines, and craft beers. “Food brings us all together,” said Michael Robnov, as he was giving a tour of the new space.

Farm to People Kitchen & Bar is located at 1100 Flushing Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11237 and open Friday 5 p.m.-12 a.m., Saturday 12 p.m.-12 a.m., and Sunday 2 p.m.-10 p.m.

This year's benefit featured a tribute to Bridget Fleming and Karen Johnston, DVM, who both received special recognition. Jane Brickell, Kelly Brickell and Richard Brickell

The guests were provided with a variety of luxuries, including live music, cocktails, light meals, and a silent auction. All guests were given a warm welcome. The local wildlife patients who were treated at their hospital profited in every way from the sale's revenues.

About the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center of The Hamptons:

The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center, Inc., Eastern Long Island's only wildlife hospital, is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rehabilitation of wild animals impacted by human encroachment on their habitat. It is a grass-roots organization that began with a few concerned friends and has grown to include over 3,000 members and supporters. The center operates as a full-service professional wildlife hospital, with licensed rehabilitators, biologists, animal behaviorists, and volunteers on staff. More than 300 people have been trained to help with wildlife rescues. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center is located on Munn’s Pond Park through a cooperative licensing agreement with Suffolk County Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation. The center is located on a greenbelt of public land parcels that stretches from Tiana Bay to Peconic Bay on the eastern end of Long Island, New York. This ecosystem is one-of-a-kind and irreplaceable, with salt and freshwater wetlands, Pine Barrens, deciduous forest, and meadowland. As a result, it is an ideal location for a wildlife rehabilitation center. The hospital is intended solely for wild animals. There are no ambient noises or smells to stress the wildlife that is recovering within, unlike a veterinary hospital. Every year, the Wildlife Rescue Center receives over 10,000 calls for information or assistance regarding wild animal encounters. In addition, the center offers educational programs to local elementary and secondary schools. Local college students participate in cooperative education programs and internships. The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center has an annual operating budget of more than $650,000, almost entirely funded by generous donors.

Will The Nicotine Pouch Trend Catch On In New York?

There’s always plenty to do in New York. From the tourist spots, cultural landmarks and entertainment, to countless bars and restaurants, it’s a place of tradition as much as it is of change. The Big Apple is also a city when a new trend can take hold any minute. An example of this is the popularity of Cafe Cannal, New York City's first CBD Café & Lounge, which has now become a place to smoke, meet friends, and hold events like Pride with a Love is Lit. Yet, while cannabis is now legal and becoming increasingly popular, cigarette smoking is on the decline. One smoking trend to replace this in New York could be the nicotine pouch. We think they will, so let’s take a look at the reasons why.

Convenience

Nicotine pouches are small fiber pouches that fit subtly under your upper lip. Over a period of time, the nicotine in the pouch is absorbed into the bloodstream through the soft tissue of your gums. The upside? Nicotine pouches are discreet so you can use them under your mask in public indoor settings that require them. You can also use them in places where smoke, including vape vapor, isn’t allowed since there’s literally no smoking involved. They’re legal and easy to buy, which isn’t the case for other nicotine alternatives and cannabis products, reports The City.

Market

An article on Prilla examining the state of the nicotine pouch trend more broadly highlighted how retailers are keeping their eye on nicotine pouches and expecting the market to accept them with open arms. In fact, a chain of 108 convenience stores saw a growth of more than 40% as compared to other years. It’s suspected that past social distancing regulations had something to do with this since nicotine pouches are also much easier to find and purchase from legitimate sellers online. Today, even as foot traffic resumes in brick and mortar stores, consumers are far from letting go of the convenience of online shopping, which is why nicotine pouches are still gaining popularity.

Wellness

Tobacco users are starting to move away from tobacco products and look for tobacco alternatives while still enjoying nicotine. As it turns out, tobacco alternatives are proving to be better options. Nicotine pouches do not cause tooth staining, for example, so users don’t end up going to the dentist more often than normal (which should be about every six months according to the American Dental Association, in case you were wondering). Nicotine pouches are also smokeless, which is great news for those who can’t deal with smoke - either due to illness or simply because smoke irritates the eyes, nose, and respiratory lining in general.

Ease-Of-Use

If you live in New York, you’re probably busy 25 hours a day. Between work, school, and other activities, sometimes finding the time for a simple smoke break just isn’t possible. With options like nicotine pouches, you don’t have to take time out of your busy schedule to find a suitable place to smoke. Pouches are also extremely easy to use and transport: they’re lightweight, affordable, and they don’t require spitting - putting it in a napkin as you would a piece of gum is just fine.

With the city just starting to rebound back into full normalcy according to CNN, there are some new habits like the nicotine pouch which seem here to stay. While they’re not yet at the same classic level as cigarettes or the same cultural token as vapes, nicotine pouches are proving to be a burgeoning new product. You heard it here, better keep your eyes peeled for pouch options popping up in stores near you.

Canary Club

Ideal for a night out with friends or a romantic date, Canary Club’s unexpected decor and entertainment make for a truly unforgettable evening. Inspired by the intoxicating energy of New Orleans, this unique supper club features a variety of live entertainment to go with your meal, including live jazz, funk, soul, disco, plus weekly comedy shows. Located in the heart of New York's Lower East Side at 303 Broome St, make sure you check out this vibrant bi-level spot

Opened in October 2019 by husband and wife duo Ryan Chadwick and Emily Frantz, Canary Club recently updated many of their menu items and cocktails. Canary Club’s menu includes colorful, modern American dishes cooked in a wood-fired oven. Highlights of the menu included perfectly roasted garlic & parsley creole escargot, prepared in the classic French fashion, and hoisin pork belly lettuce wraps. The differing flavor profiles were both equally delicious, a feat not easy to pull off. The crown jewel of the dinner menu was the featured Canary Club Fried Chicken with voodoo spice, crystal hot sauce, and waffle fries.

The signature cocktails were modern and exceptional, with names after the artists and art pieces from the Dada & Surrealist movements. Van Gogh’s Ear fittingly blended absinthe, cognac, grenadine, cachaca, and citrus to create a vivid and bright cocktail reminiscent of the paintings it referenced. The Two Fridas was also one of the recommended signature cocktails, with reposado tequila, mezcal, aperitif wine, thym liqueur, and cassis mixed together for a fiery, statement-making flavor combination that Miss Kahlo herself would certainly enjoy. And by featuring unique zero-proof cocktails, Canary Club ensures that you can partake in the fun even if you’re not drinking.

From the crafted and thoughtful meals and drinks to the handpicked selection of music, this elevated neighborhood bar can’t be missed.

$45,000 Cognac in NYC

History met luxury at the rooftop club Somewhere Nowhere NYC as Remy Martin’s Louis XIII Cognac was unveiled for a celebratory tasting. Only 0.0000038361% of people worldwide have had the opportunity to taste this unique and rare liquor.

With garden-inspired decor and a magical design, Somewhere Nowhere’s outdoor lounge and open-air rooftop pool gave 360-views of Manhattan’s majestic skyline and provided a truly immersive nightlife experience. The interior featured multiple floors and even an open-air rooftop pool, making it a luxury nightlife destination perfectly designed for the exclusive previewing of limited edition ultra-rare NXIII decanter by LOUIS XIII.

A LOUIS XIII Brand Ambassador hosted the exclusive LOUIS XIII tasting paired with caviar. The tasting explained the blend of the cognac, which is composed of up to 1,200 of the finest and most precious eaux-de-vie from grapes grown in Grande Champagne vineyard in the region of Cognac. This fiery, colorless liquid is poured into century-old Limousin oak casks to mature over the years. Since 1874, the Remy Martin Cellar Masters has set aside the finest Grande Champagne eau-de-vie and used their artistic intuition and craftsmanship to hand-pick different combinations of aged eaux-de-vie set aside by their predecessors to blend in such a way that retains the taste and aromas of LOUIS XIII cognac throughout time.

After admiring how the liquor was housed in a Baccarat crystal decanter marked with the signature fleur de lis insignia, we were led through the process of first eyeing the honeyed amber tones of the cognac and then enjoying a slow sip to fully dissect and appreciate the individual flavors that arose from both the taste and aroma. At the caviar pairing, the richness of the LOUIS XIII mingled with the brininess of the Special Reserve Petrossian Caviar to create an explosion of flavors on the tongue. The experience captured the essence of luxury, and was made all the more opulent by being hosted in Somewhere Nowhere’s extravagant venue.
