The recent off-Broadway show "Lone Star" by Ruth Stage Production was a captivating and thought-provoking experience, bringing to life a powerful narrative that resonates with audiences of all ages.

"Lone Star," a play written by James McLure, is set in a small town in Texas and explores themes of brotherhood, loyalty, and the struggles of returning home after war. Ruth Stages' interpretation of this timeless piece breathed new life into the story, using humor to showcase the complexity of relationships and the challenges of finding one's place in a changing world.

The production was directed by Joe Rosario, whose vision and direction brought a fresh perspective to the play. The staging and set design were meticulously crafted, transporting the audience to the heart of a Texan bar in the 1970s. The attention to detail, like the constant cracking of foaming beers, and time-appropriate soundtrack, recreated the ambiance of the era, enhancing the authenticity of the narrative.

The cast's performances were nothing short of remarkable. Each actor brought depth and authenticity to their characters, immersing the audience in the emotional rollercoaster of their experiences. Matt de Rogatis’ portrayal of Roy, the charismatic yet troubled lead, brought a depth to the brawny macho stereotype. He was supported by Dan Amboyer’s simple but lovable character of Ray, Ana Isabelle’s tragic songbird in the character of Elizabeth, and Ryan McCartan’s comic relief of Cletis. The ensemble's chemistry was palpable, drawing the audience deeper into the narrative's conflicts and resolutions.

One of the most compelling aspects of Ruth Stages' production was its ability to navigate the play's themes of patriotism, disillusionment, and the struggle for identity. Through nuanced performances and expert storytelling, the production evoked a range of emotions, prompting introspection and sparking conversations about the complexities of personal and societal change. Moreover, the production's resonance with contemporary issues added a layer of relevance, making it relatable to today's audience despite being set in a different time period. It served as a mirror reflecting on the enduring challenges of finding oneself and reconciling with the past, themes that continue to echo through generations.

Overall, RuthStages' off-Broadway production of "Lone Star" was a triumph, showcasing exceptional talent, insightful direction, and a compelling interpretation of a classic play. Its ability to captivate audiences and provoke meaningful discussions underscores the enduring power of theater to illuminate the human experience.

Whether it's through its compelling performances, striking set design, or its ability to provoke introspection, RuthStages' production of "Lone Star" stands as a testament to the timeless resonance of great storytelling in the world of theater.

Lone Star is currently in preview performances at Theatre Row (410 West 42nd Street). The strictly limited engagement is set to run through Saturday, December 23rd, 2023. Get a Taste of Italy in the LES with Bread and Stone

Bread and Stone is an intimate restaurant and bar, that just opened up in the Lower East Side.

Bread and Stone is an intimate restaurant and bar, that just opened up in the Lower East Side. The vibes are the equivalent of curling up in front of a fire type of cozy. Melanie, our server, guided us through the menu while we were there and made sure she didn’t steer us wrong with our decisions. We started with cocktails that were handcrafted by Chris. The Pistachio Cream Pie is a concoction of vanilla vodka, pistachio simple syrup, amaretto, lime juice and pistachio egg white foam, which gives it the frothiness on top. This drink is on the sweeter side, so it can also double as a liquid dessert. The Amalfitano, is a refreshing combination of muddled strawberries, limoncello, fresh lemon juice and basil simple syrup, transporting you to the beach on a sunny day.

We couldn’t pass up house-made focaccia, which came with herbed honey butter, house garlic confit and my favorite, rosemary-toasted pistachio apricot jam accoutrements. It was filling, but I would’ve made room for more. The Cesare di Bruxelles was a surprisingly warm salad with different textures of the shaved brussels sprouts and parmesan crust. Now I want all my salads to be like that!

We opted for the indulgent Tartufo di Parmigiano, the parmesan truffle pizza. This is not a pizza you will be able to get everywhere. The mixture of herbed butter crust and balsamic fig glaze really makes it stand out.

We ended with a homemade pasta and that’s because we were so full we had no room for dessert! Melanie made sure we chose one that was memorable and urged us to try the Manzo alla bolognese and she was right. The homemade pappardelle noodles melted in your mouth with the beef that has been slow-cooked for hours generously mounted on top. It was a hug in a meal! Portions are generous so arrive with the intent to share or have leftovers!

Overall, this was really a stellar experience and you’re going to walk away happy no matter what the occasion for dining here is. They have live music nightly, which is another reason to go, but you really don’t need more than the very authentic cuisine. To plan your visit, please go to https://www.breadandstone.com/ for more information.

Fiori del Giardino: An Exhibition by Paulette Tavormina

Photographer Paulette Tavormina opens her latest exhibition, Fiori del Giardino, with a party in the heart of the Chelsea Arts District at the Winston Wächter Fine Art gallery.

Photographer Paulette Tavormina opened her latest exhibition, Fiori del Giardino, with a party in the heart of the Chelsea Arts District at the Winston Wächter Fine Art gallery. Paulette creates still life photographs in the style of Golden Age Dutch old masters. She’s inspired by techniques such as Adriaen Coorte’s attention to the positioning of objects,  Giovanna Garzoni’s compositions and color palette, and Zurbarán’s attention to lighting. To create her images, Paulette often works against the clock with freshly picked flowers and fruit from her garden--- or as the old masters did, she sometimes substitutes plaster fruit and silk flowers.

Guests gathered to see the striking images and toast the artist. Paulette was joined by her husband, Paul Pfeiffer, and the gallery’s co-owner Christine Wächter-Campbell, director Madeline Cornell, as well as Jeffrey Caik, Fran Degni, Gigi Fava, Wendy Fogel, Sigi Jaeckel, Amy Jaffe, Michele Gerber Klein, Kevin Kelly, Justin King, Jerry Leiner, William Maier, Val Paverd, August Pross, Tori Ratty, Gillian and Jim Reynolds, Jane Sherman, Harriet Walley, and many more.

On December 16th, Paulette will be joined by Sotheby’s Old Master Paintings Specialist David Pollack, Photo Historian Gail Buckland, and Winston Wächter Fine Art Director Madeline Cornell for a conversation about Modern Still Life Photography: A Tribute to the Old Masters. The event is free and open to the public. The exhibition, Fiori del Giardino, will run until January 6, 2024.

From its rich cultural tapestry to its soul-stirring music and tantalizing cuisine, this city invites you to immerse yourself in its captivating charm.

Check out our top 10 essential spots to eat, stay, drink, enjoy music, and more for New Yorkers in New Orleans:

  1. Stay at Hotel Peter & Paul

Hotel Peter & Paul offers a unique stay in the vibrant Marigny neighborhood. The location provides a quiet retreat while being close to the city's energy. Stepping into Hotel Peter & Paul is like entering a time capsule of New Orleans. Referenced by the name, the hotel is housed in a restored 19th-century Catholic church, rectory, schoolhouse, and convent, each section of the hotel boasts distinctive architecture and a unique story to tell. Located in the vibrant Marigny neighborhood, Peter & Paul is walking distance (especially for us New Yorkers who are used to a good stroll!) from full immersion in the rhythm of New Orleans, saving guests on any Uber expenses. Additionally, the hotel's amenities, including a high quality restaurant, charming café serving locally sourced delights, and renowned cocktail bar, provide a luxurious and authentic NOLA experience.

2. Hear the jazz greats at Preservation Hall

Nestled in the heart of the French Quarter, Preservation Hall stands as a hallowed institution dedicated to the preservation of traditional New Orleans jazz. This intimate venue, with its weathered walls and wooden benches, invites music enthusiasts to experience the soulful rhythms that define the city's musical heritage. Renowned for its nightly performances by seasoned jazz musicians, each session at Preservation Hall is an authentic journey through the sounds that have shaped the city's musical identity. Visitors can sway to the melodies of trumpets, trombones, clarinets, and more, reveling in the timeless allure of live jazz in its purest form.

3. Eat (and drink!) at Brewery Saint X & Devil Moon BBQ

New Orleans may not be the first city to come to mind when you think of BBQ… but we are in the south, and they sure know how to throw down! Devil Moon BBQ combines Southern tradition with bold flavors, serving up succulent smoked meats like brisket, ribs, and pulled pork infused with their signature house-made sauces. The relaxed, rustic atmosphere and friendly staff add to the charm of this barbecue joint, making it a must-visit for aficionados of slow-cooked, tender barbecue delights.

Even better, the restaurant shares its space with Brewery Saint X, a modern southern brewery. I am, admittedly, not so much of a beer drinker, but their wide variety and exceptional selection of handcrafted brews is sure to please even those who usually prefer cocktails or wine. We had the pleasure of tasting some truly unique and delicious sours, some more traditional ales and lagers, each crafted with precision and passion. The familial energy and desire to share, educate, and get feedback from their customers is truly emblematic of what I think of when I think of Southern Hospitality. Visitors can enjoy guided tours to witness the brewing process firsthand and savor flights of their finely crafted beers while soaking in the brewery's industrial-chic ambiance.

4. Learn about the culture at the New Orleans Jazz Museum

Immerse yourself in the melodious history of jazz at the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Housed in the historic Old U.S. Mint, this museum celebrates the city's musical legacy through captivating exhibits, interactive displays, and live performances. Visitors can explore the evolution of jazz, from its roots in African rhythms to its modern-day variations, while admiring artifacts, instruments, and memorabilia that showcase the genre's profound impact on global music. With engaging programs and educational initiatives, the Jazz Museum invites enthusiasts and curious minds alike to delve into the soul-stirring world of jazz.

5. Have jazz brunch at Josephine Estelle

If you want to take a break from the southern food a, head to Josephine Estelle. Located in the trendy Ace Hotel, this spot is a culinary delight where Italian-inspired cuisine meets Southern flavors. The restaurant boasts an inventive menu showcasing dishes made with locally sourced ingredients. From handmade pastas and wood-fired pizzas to inventive seafood creations, every plate reflects a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. Guests can savor these delectable offerings in a stylish yet welcoming setting that embodies the spirit of modern New Orleans dining, and make sure you go for a weekend brunch to catch some live jazz music while you dine.

6. Get a history lesson at the Pharmacy Museum

Step back in time at the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, a fascinating ode to the city's medical and pharmaceutical history. Housed in a historic apothecary, this museum offers a glimpse into 19th-century healthcare practices, showcasing an array of medical instruments, potions, and remedies used during that era. Visitors can explore the intricacies of early medicine, from voodoo remedies to scientific breakthroughs, and learn about the role of pharmacists in shaping healthcare. Guided tours provide insights into the evolution of medicine while highlighting the unique and sometimes quirky practices that once prevailed.

7. Hear local jazz musicians at The Royal Frenchman Hotel & Bar

Tucked away in the Marigny neighborhood, The Royal Frenchman Hotel & Bar offers a unique blend of accommodation and entertainment. The hotel’s bar hosts an array of live performances, ranging from jazz and blues to funk and soul, featuring talented local artists. Guests can sip on craft cocktails and immerse themselves in the lively music scene, soaking in the soulful tunes that echo through the air. The intimate setting and diverse musical lineup make it a hotspot for both visitors and locals seeking an authentic New Orleans music experience.

8. Eat authentic creole at Coop’s Place

For real, traditional New Orleans food, you won’t find anywhere better or more authentic than Coop’s Place. Nestled in the heart of the French Quarter, Coop’s Place is a beloved institution renowned for its Creole cuisine and lively ambiance. This unassuming spot serves up iconic dishes like the rabbit and sausage jambalaya, seafood gumbo, and their famous fried chicken. Locals and visitors alike flock here for a taste of genuine New Orleans flavors amidst a vibrant atmosphere. The servers have a gruffness that will be familiar to anyone visiting from NYC - their ban on photography in the space and general disdain for cellphones and influencer culture was reminiscent of old school pubs back home in Brooklyn.

9. Relax at the Alto Rooftop Pool

Perched atop the Ace hotel in the Central Business District, the Alto Rooftop Pool offers more than just a refreshing dip; it provides a panoramic view of the city's skyline. This sophisticated oasis invites visitors to unwind in style, basking in the sun while sipping handcrafted cocktails. Travel to Greece with Periyali

Periyali, has provided an authentic Greek experience to the Chelsea neighborhood since 1987 (36 years!) and even initially introduced the cuisine and Greek wine to the city. The restaurant recently took a brief pause to get a facelift and the interior reminds you of the neighborhoods in Santorini with bright white walls and windows, complete with a skylight and new artwork from Greece.

For those of you who are not familiar with Periyali, the restaurant has provided an authentic Greek experience to the Chelsea neighborhood since 1987 (36 years!) and even initially introduced the cuisine and Greek wine to the city. The concept was a response to the demand for a classic Greek restaurant from regulars at Periyali’s sister restaurant Il Cantinori.  The name references a romantic Greek word for coastline or seashore, because that is where most of the food originated from.

The restaurant recently took a brief pause to get a facelift. The interior reminds you of the neighborhoods in Santorini with bright white walls and windows, complete with a skylight and new artwork from Greece. Close your eyes and the food transports you just as easily and so does the staff. You will not find a more attentive dining service than at Periyali. Mack was our server for the evening and he remembers the last time you were in the restaurant, where you sat and what you ate!

We started our meal with Mack’s recommendation for white wine, the Mezzo platter with Taramosalata, Melitzanosalata Pikilia. Hummus and Tzatziki. The spreads were super fresh and were served with soft pita bread. We wanted to put these on everything!

You also must get the Oktapodi Sharas, the grilled octopus. There was a perfect char on it and it was a large portion. For entrees, you can’t go wrong with choosing a fish and lamb dish, which is well known in Greek culture and also a must order at the restaurant. Everything is fresh and again, portions are hearty. Lastly, you need to end on a sweet note. The restaurant shows you a visual of all of the homemade Greek desserts you can order, but you can’t go wrong with the walnut cake, which is a traditional Greek dessert. It’s served with a side of ice cream and the perfect way to end the meal.

Periyali is really perfect for any occasion; you can bring family, a date, business dinner, or meet your friends here and it will be a great experience for all.  The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner 7 days a week and on weekdays offers a prix fixe menu for $39 during lunch that includes an appetizer and entree.  Its sister restaurants In addition to il Cantinori include Amali, Bar Six, and The Bar Room.

For more information on the restaurant and reservations, please visit periyali.com

The Boathouse is Back!

The Central Park Boathouse has been around since 1954 (70 years next year!) and was saved from closure by Legends Hospitality earlier this year. With new ownership has come a breath of reinvigoration into the space.

I dare you to name a more iconic location than the Central Park Boathouse. This landmark destination has been around since 1954 (70 years next year!) and was saved from closure by Legends Hospitality earlier this year. With new ownership has come a breath of reinvigoration into the space. The company has pledged $3.5 million in improvements, which have already begun and the venue will continue to open in phases.

There are also not many places where you can grab a meal alongside an activity. I was fortunate enough to get to experience the quintessentially New York experience of a boat ride in Central Park, and later on sample some items from the cafe menu during a recent trip to the restaurant. The level of service from the staff feels like a hug before you’re transported to what feels like not New York once you’re on the boat and on your way . Hopefully you’re lucky enough to have someone row for you as that was not my strong suits! You’ll see locals and tourists alike taking in the relaxing experience. I suggest rowing then eating to work up an appetite!

The cafe menu runs from morning to afternoon so you have an opportunity to fulfill your breakfast or lunch fixes in the park. We got to sample a lot of dishes, including the filling Farro and Market Vegetable Salad, fresh Hearts of Romaine with Gulf Shrimp dish, and the hearty Roast Beef Sandwich. The star of the show, however, was the Lobster Roll, which was packed to the brim of the roll and at $25, is one of the most affordable and delicious lobster rolls in the city. It’s served with homemade potato chips too.

Other yummy options would be the Fish Sandwich, which was cooked to perfection, crispy outside and delicate inside or the Boathouse Burger, both served on a potato roll, reminiscent of every backyard barbecue you’ve ever been to. You’ll need to end on a sweet note and do not sleep on the daily special pastries or the custard if they have it!

Boat Rental hours for Winter is 9:30am-4pm daily, weather permitting until November 26th, and the Cafe is open 8am-5pm daily. While boat season is winding down, event season is heating up! For more information on the Boathouse or Boat Rental, please visit http://centralparkboathouse.com/. For event inquiries, you can submit a form here.

An Evening of Cocktails and Culture at Isla & Co's Espresso Martini Cocktail Masterclass

In the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, there exists a culinary gem known as Isla & Co. This Australian restaurant has made quite a name for itself with its renowned Espresso Martini

In the heart of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, there exists a culinary gem known as Isla & Co. This Australian restaurant has made quite a name for itself with its renowned Espresso Martini, and on a crisp October evening, I had the privilege of being invited to their exclusive Espresso Martini Cocktail Masterclass.
When it comes to the diverse culinary scene of New York City, Isla & Co stands out. This restaurant, nestled at 107 N 12th Street, brings the flavors of Australia to the heart of the Big Apple. Boasting a young and vibrant ambiance, Isla & Co has become a must-visit destination for foodies and coffee enthusiasts alike

A Warm Welcome

The anticipation for the evening was heightened by the warm and welcoming email I received in advance of the event. It asked us to arrive at 6:30 PM for welcome drinks and bites, as the masterclass was set to begin promptly at 7:00 PM. This attention to detail and thoughtfulness was a clear indication of the care and dedication that Isla & Co pours into every aspect of their guest experience.

The hosts for the evening were a gracious and knowledgeable presence. They ensured that all the guests felt at home and guided us through the variety of espresso-based cocktails with enthusiasm and expertise. They told us the story behind the restaurant, the espresso martini; and why coffee is very important to them. They came from Australia and brought their culture, food, and coffee all the way to New York City.

Can you guess where the first espresso martini was made?

Legend has it that in 1983, a young, future supermodel came up to a bartender in London and asked for a drink that would wake her up and get her drunk. Hence, the first espresso martini was created.

In line with the theme of the night, we were given a gift bag that contained an Espresso Martini starter pack (Voda, coffee liqueur and a small shaker), Mr. Black stickers and an espresso martini recipe by Isla.

The Venue: An Oasis of Elegance

Upon arrival, the ambiance of Isla & Co immediately captivated me. The restaurant was a stylish oasis, designed with an eye for detail. Candles cast a warm glow, playing with shadows against the rustic wooden tables, and the dimmed lighting created an inviting and intimate atmosphere. The scent of freshly brewed coffee was in the air, mingling with the appetizing aroma of Australian cuisine.

The experience was also accompanied by a talented artist who was creating personalized caricatures of guests. It's a delightful way to capture memories of your visit, adding both a whimsical touch to the more upscale dining experience and a layer of personalization to the event, leaving us with unique souvenirs of the night.

The Masterclass: Crafting Cocktails with Experts

One of the restaurant's standout features is its renowned “OG” Espresso Martini. Isla & Co has mastered the art of crafting this classic cocktail, earning a reputation for serving one of the best in the city. Whether you're a coffee aficionado or a cocktail lover, their Espresso Martini is a must-try, combining the rich flavors of coffee with the kick of vodka.

On Tuesday night, Isla & Co closed their doors to patrons to bring in expert mixologists who would guide us through the art of crafting the three different Espresso Martini drinks, each paired thoughtfully  with curated Australian appetizers, enhancing the overall experience.

The flight included the Olive Temptation with Starward Australian Whisky, house-roasted coffee, banana, cream, and olive oil, the Scarlett Rose with Tequila Reposado, Licor 43, house-roasted espresso, and a touch of salt, and the Coco Devine with Plantation Dark Rum, sherry, Mr Black, house-roasted coffee, and crushed Tim-Tams. These intriguing combinations from Beverage Director Jeremy Ortiz promise to captivate your taste buds and provide a truly memorable experience.

As someone who appreciates the finer points of mixology, the masterclass was a delightful journey into the world of cocktails. It was an interactive and engaging experience, with a mix of writers and influencers in attendance, all eager to learn and share in the excitement.

The Experience: You’ll leave longing to return

In the heart of Williamsburg, Isla & Co offers more than just delicious Australian cuisine and cocktails; it offers an experience that is carefully curated, engaging, and filled with surprises. It's a restaurant where the joy of sharing good food, crafted cocktails, and artistic expressions meet. For a delightful evening that blends culture and culinary pleasures, Isla & Co is a must-visit destination in Brooklyn.

Isla & Co. in Williamsburg, adjacent to the William Vale (107 N 12th St.) and at Hotel Hendricks in Midtown Manhattan (25 W. 38th Street) has a brand new Espresso Martini Flight, offering a delightful journey through various interpretations of this beloved cocktail.

Mr. Black Coffee Liqueur Takes Over U.S. With 2nd Annual Espresso Martini Fest

Mr. Black hosts a week of espresso martinis across the U.S. in 220 bars across the country.

From October 9th-15th, Mr. Black Coffee Liqueur hosted their 2nd Annual Espresso Martini Fest in 14 cities and 240 bars across the country. NYC was considered one of the hubs and had special events for espresso martini aficionados that enveloped the city in a caffeinated haze. One of which was an espresso martini masterclass hosted at mixology bar, Death & Co. The instructors for the course was cocktail royalty, Bea Bradsell, daughter of Espresso Martini creator, Dick Bradsell and Mr, Black US Brand Ambassador Stephen Kurpinsky.

Bradsell took the crowd through the origin of the espresso martini (a model asking for something to wake her up and a happy accident of coffee grinds and vodka), and the history of the London bar scene at that time. The original recipe is quite different from what we expect today. It was on ice, was comprised of vodka, sugar syrup, Kahlua and strong espresso that was strained into a rocks glass.

After the introduction, guests were then invited to learn how to make cocktails of their own and received recipe books to make the concoctions at home.

Later in the week, Mr. Black introduced the Mr. Black Espresso Martini House, a pop-up in the West Village that gave old school Mad Men vibes upon walking into the space. The event hosted 4 of Mr. Black’s favorite bars with their own spin on the espresso martini including The Sylvester from Miami, FL, True Laurel from San Francisco, CA, and NYC native bars Dante’s and Milady’s.

Much like earlier in the week, Kurpinsky hosted another espresso martini masterclass for fans of the brand. As an onsite activity, attendees could get personalized Mr Black merch with branded patches from Unemployed Denim or custom embroidery from Apparel NYC. And for the entertainment portion of the evening, NYC faves DJ Mick and High & Mighty Brass Band brought the music. Upstairs a speakeasy was decked out to be the personification of Mr. Black, complete with a terrace, for VIPs.

It was a great week of buzzy craft cocktails prepared by the experts, showing just why the espresso martini is the star of the show. For more information and to attend next year, please visit https://www.mrblack.co/us/espresso-martini-fest.

In Gramercy, Wild Ivy is a stylish new bar and restaurant that's ideal for a first date, happy hour with coworkers, dinner with friends, or a night out on the town by yourself. Mick O'Sullivan, proprietor of Bell Book & Candle in the West Village, and Peter O'Connell, owner of Molly's and Malones on Third Avenue, brought Wild Ivy to life.

Start with some Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings, Crispy Deviled Eggs, or Mini Meatballs with Chimichurri. The 16-oz grilled ribeye, the grilled cheese and truffle sandwich, and the chicken cordon bleu sandwich are among the larger dishes. Pizzas such as the Italian Flag, which has buffalo mozzarella, tomato, and basil, the Old Stand By, which has Ezzo pepperoni, and the tasty Spicy Meatball with Serrano chile are also available for guests to enjoy. Order a traditional Caesar, a stone fruit mixed green salad, or an heirloom tomato salad for a lighter choice. A comprehensive brunch menu will also be available at Wild Ivy starting at the end of October.

A cocktail menu that honors Wild Ivy's Gramercy location was created by bar director Kelly Jakobs. The color-changing Poison Ivy, which is made with Grey Goose, lemon, and lavender infused with butterfly peas, dill, gin, and ginger; Ruggle's Choice, which combines vodka, Kahlua, espresso, and pumpkin spice; Booth's Hooch, which combines gin, lime, ginger, and beet; and Irresistible Irving, which combines rum, lime, peach, cinnamon, and angostura. Weekly specials include $4 off specialty cocktails, $7 house wine, $6 beers, and $1.50 oysters during happy hour, which runs from 4 to 7 p.m.

All the walls at Wild Ivy are covered in the breathtaking Abstract Expressionist artwork of the late New York City artist Rick Librizzi, who resided at the Chelsea Hotel. Librizzi's art alluded to his contemporaneous relationships with Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The area has large booths, a stunning bar, and sultry low lighting. It has 74 indoor seating capacity.

The bar will be open from 4pm till late, 7 nights per week. Happy hour will be offered on weekdays from 4pm-7pm
