Baba Cool: A hidden gem in Fort Greene
Whether it's pre-theater dining near BAM or a relaxed spot to unwind after exploring Fort Greene Park, baba cool delivers. Just around the corner from Brooklyn's cultural landmarks, the new location offers spacious indoor and outdoor seating, perfect for post-event drinks, casual brunch, or hosting private events.
What started as a cozy café has matured into a multi-faceted space where the vibe shifts effortlessly from day to night. Whether you’re popping in for a morning cappuccino or settling in for a glass of natural wine and small plates with friends, Baba Cool in Fort Greene retains the same easygoing charm that made it a local staple. Its new, larger space—just steps from Fort Greene Park and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM)—features roomy indoor and outdoor seating, ideal for anything from brunch with a laptop to post-theater cocktails.
By day, Baba Cool is an oasis of vibrant, health-conscious fare. The café menu focuses on fresh, vegetable-forward dishes like crisp salads, hearty bowls, and nourishing brunch favorites that have become synonymous with Brooklyn’s food scene. Coffee culture is still at the heart of the experience, but the kitchen—helmed by Chef Hector Lugo—brings elevated simplicity to the table with dishes like baby kale salad with manchego and almonds, and baba fries seasoned with manchego, scallions, and cayenne mayo.
As the sun sets, Baba Cool subtly transforms. Lights dim, music hums, and the dinner menu emerges with bold, shareable dishes perfect for gathering over drinks. Small plates like shrimp toast with fennel confit and baby beets with preserved lemon yogurt are matched by satisfying mains such as crispy chicken with dijonnaise and the comforting “Drunken Gabi,” a rice noodle bowl packed with broccolini, cabbage, and green goddess dressing.
Even dessert gets its moment with a rich, sea salt–topped olive oil chocolate mousse. Whether you’re winding down after a stroll in Fort Greene Park or gathering with friends for Happy Hour, the energy is welcoming and unpretentious.
But the soul of Baba Cool really lies in its owner, Gabriella Mann. A Brooklyn resident with a background behind the bar, Gabriella brings warmth, inclusivity, and attention to detail to every aspect of her business. Baba Cool isn’t just a place to eat and drink—it’s a gathering space designed for connection, joy, and community. Gabriella’s latest venture, wine bar BABA on Withers in Williamsburg, shares the same ethos, proof of her growing legacy in New York’s hospitality scene.
Whether it’s a weekend brunch, an intimate dinner, or a casual drink with friends, Baba Cool fits the moment. With a seasonal menu, full bar, and cozy yet modern ambiance, it offers the rare kind of space where anyone—locals and newcomers alike—can feel like a regular.

Cassoulet Confessions: An Evening with Sylvie Bigar
On a true fall Wednesday, the Consulate General of France in New York hosted, “Cassoulet Confessions.”
On a true fall Wednesday, the Consulate General of France in New York hosted, “Cassoulet Confessions.” The event opened up with a panel discussion moderated by Communications Consultant, Marianne Fabre-Lanvin, while featuring a panel of prominent speakers: the author of Cassoulet Confessions, Sylvie Bigar; Executive Chef & Cassoulet Ambassador, Philippe Bertineau; Executive Director of La Maison de la Région Occitanie à New York, Paul Cousin; and Co-Owner of Clay Coyote Pottery, Morgan Baum.
The panel discussion was dedicated to cassoulet — one of the staples of French country cuisine. The dish is perfect for the chilly fall and winter nights, as it typically consists of “a hearty slow-simmered stew of sausage, confit (typically duck), pork, and white beans.” (Source: Kitchn) Cassoulet’s name comes from the traditional cooking pot, “the casserole”, which is a deep, round, earthenware pot with slanting sides. Although the Clay Coyote Pottery is based in Hutchinson, Minnesota, their studio is one of the three establishments in the United States that creates the proper “casserole”.
Sylvie Bigar, who is the author of Cassoulet Confessions, mentioned that she studied the dish and its cultural importance for years, but she truly understood the cassoulet and its significance once she tasted it in the Occitanie region of Southern France.
After the cassoulet discussion came to a close, the lucky attendees were able to taste-test one of the cassoulet recipes mentioned in the book, accompanied by a choice of Gerard Bertrand red or white wine and traditional baguette bread.
If you’re interested in learning more about the cassoulet dish, along with its cultural relevance and its influence on Sylvie Bigar’s life, Cassoulet Confessions is available for purchase here. If you’re also interested in making the cassoulet at home, make sure to order your casserole at Clay Coyote Pottery.

Afternoon Tea & Burlesque at Elsie Rooftop
Elsie Rooftop takes brunch and high tea to a different level. You won’t be able to simply sip on a mimosa when Lady Mendl and her friends dazzle you with their performances. They make brunch an immersive experience.
Elsie Rooftop was named after Elsie De Wolfe, also known as Lady Mendl, an American actress, interior decorator, author of The House in Good Taste, and a prominent figure in New York, Paris, and London society. The lounge honors her with a Saturday High Tea and stunning burlesque show. Lady Mendl shows off her powerful vocals while her friends put on an interactive show on stage and on the pole.
Lady Mendl and her friends
Now because this is no simple brunch, Elsie Rooftop offers signature tea infused hot and cold drinks. Hot tea infused cocktails include a Chamomile Honey Toddy, Bourbon Peach Green Tea, and an Earl Grey Old Fashioned. They also have London Society which is made with black tea, Bulleit Rye, Montenegro, honey, and lemon. But, if alcohol isn’t your cup of tea, you can still enjoy the show with tea of your choice.
London Society and The Duchess
When it comes to food, Elsie Rooftop also does it a little differently. High tea usually includes finger sandwiches, scones, cookies, and pastries, but Elsie puts brunch food on the menu too. They serve Truffle Grilled Cheeses with Bacon, Black Angus Sliders, Wild Mushroom Flatbreads, and assorted finger sandwiches (Cucumber and Chive Aioli on White, Smoked Salmon and Herb Butter on Multigrain, and Prosciutto, Apple, Goat Cheese on Whole Wheat). As for the sweets lovers out there, Elsie Rooftop has assorted tarts and cakes too.
Tea with Lady Mendl only happens on Saturdays so definitely check it out. It is a classic New York high society experience you don’t want to miss. Elsie Rooftop is located on 1412 Broadway, New York, NY 10018.

Oscar Wilde Wows with New Head Chef Ali Dey Daly at the Helm.
Oscar Wilde stretches from mere literary feats, to visual and edible feasts at 45 W 27th St, with the addition of new head chef Ali Dey Daly. Award-winning, Tunisian-born Chef Ali innovates the menu with new dishes that match the extravagance and eccentricity of the popular NoMad bar and restaurant, that first opened in 2017.
Endearing energy exuded from all angles at Oscar Wilde.
Combining eclectic styles, from Victorian-influenced dishes and Celtic cuisine, with his classically trained French techniques, Chef Dey Daly introduces revamped menus now available at the longest continuous bar in New York City - do you need anymore reason to pay Oscar a visit?
The Celtic Developers Group Co-Founders, Thomas Burke and Frank McCole, are delighted with Chef Ali’s arrival: “With nearly three decades of culinary training and experience in award-winning, Michelin-star kitchens in Paris, Shanghai and New York, Chef Ali brings a global creative vision to our bar, while maintaining true to what our patrons love the most – delicious comfort fare with locally-sourced produce and ingredients.”
Beef Short Rib Bites
And those three decades of training certainly shine through, as Chef Ali offers seasonal snacks from Maple Glazed Bacon cooked for a staggering 72 hours, to elegant comfort dishes of Beef Tenderloin Cottage Pie topped with White Cheddar Mash to warm the winter cockles.
My personal favorite, Citrus Crab Avocado with Frisée & Toasts, was preceded by the perfect Fall opener, Beef Short Rib Bites; succulent braised beef lollipops, accompanied by autumnal spiced marmalade and paired with an apple and lemon champagne cocktail. Other enticements include, Branzino Filet with Cauliflower in Three Ways, Seared Duck Breast with Butternut Squash Puree, Asparagus and Citrus Sauce and the mouth watering Crémeux chocolat Manjari.
Wilde Whiskey Aplenty!
Born in Tunis, Tunisia, Chef Dey Daly found his passion for gastronomy at the young age of eleven. He studied at the prestigious Culinary School Institut Paul Bocuse in France and worked at the best Tunisian restaurants before heading back to France to fine-tune his talents, working at Alain Ducasse’s three Michelin-star kitchen at the Plaza Athénée in Paris, as well as at its sister property Le Meurice with Yannick Alléno. Chef Dey Daly continued his studies and traveled the world, before working his way up to Executive Chef at Le Cosy Paris near the Champs-Elysée. He also collaborated with the Parisian bakery café, Brioche Dorée, to launch their first three locations in China. In 2015, Chef Ali participated in the Toque d’Or international competition and won first prize.
“I’m thrilled to join the team at Oscar Wilde and bring a new approach to the bar’s menu” said Executive Chef Ali Dey Daly. “Also as a fun fact – during my first trip to New York City, the first bar I visited was coincidentally Oscar Wilde’s sister bar Lillie’s Victorian Establishment in Times Square, so this all comes full circle for me.”
Wilde festivities. Photo Credit: Celtic Developers Group.
Chef Ali proves the infamous Wilde quote true: ‘I can resist everything except temptation.’ Especially with the holidays right around the corner, as Oscar Wilde is widely known to display the most decadent festive decorations of all of NYC bars!
So come relax or get Wilde but remember extravagance is always in season.
Fornino Pizza
Weaving my way through the heart of the bustling neighbourhood of Greenpoint, Brooklyn, I soon arrived at Fornino, a true treasure trove of a pizzeria. Upon entering, we were greeted at a bar space buzzing with chatter. The rustic tones of brick and wood were brightened with warm lighting, setting the fun and relaxed mood for the evening as we were shown to the cozy table area past the bar.
We sipped on elegant Strawberry Lemonade Hibiscus Ice Tea as we browsed the seemingly endless choices of pizza which progressed through “generations.” The “first generation” selections included more simple choices such as Marghertia Classica and Marinara. The “second generation” began to include more creative combinations such as the Cosenza adorned with n’duja, butternut squash, stracciatella, oregano and spicy honey.
The “third generation” pizzas were the most inventive, with topping selections that I thought one could only dream of having on pizza. After much deliberation, we selected a new addition to the menu, the Zucchini e pesto which included zucchini, mozzarella, goat cheese, mint pesto and Fresno chilli for an extra kick, along with the Funghi e prosciutto which had shiitake mushroom, prosciutto, mozzarella, tomato, fontina and pecorino. Options for gluten free and vegan substitutes were available, as well as a range of lavish salads and Antipizza.
Due to the smaller size of the restaurant, the atmosphere was intimate and amicable, with the staff providing incredibly friendly and efficient attention to each and every patron. The pizza arrived shortly, presented on a stand ideal for sharing onto separate plates.
I’d never seen pizza that looked so irresistibly inviting and was torn between which to try first, eventually taking a slice of the Funghi e prosciutto. The balance of each ingredient was perfect, with the dough being the ideal consistency so as to enhance rather than overpower the taste of each topping. The Zucchini e pesto was delightfully light and refreshing with the combination of mint pesto and chilli really awakening the taste buds.
Of course, there was still room for dessert with a range of ice cream sundaes available. We chose the Brownie Sundae for Two, quickly devouring the exquisite mountain of warm brownie topped with chocolate ice cream, whipped cream, salted caramel, and chocolate sauce dusted in powdered sugar.
Be sure to visit Fornino’s at 849 Manhattan Ave, Brooklyn 11222 to taste some truly scrumptious and inventive pizza with a setup and atmosphere ideal for socialising and sharing. Fornino offers a brunch pizza menu, lunch specials, and a main dinner menu; or if you fancy a night in try their take-out and delivery options!
Fall at Clinton Hall: The new seasonal menu
Fall is finally here! This is my favorite season, especially in New York City: The weather is warm with a breeze in the air, streets are prettier when tree leaves turn red, and houses get spookier when Halloween is around the corner. But as a foodie, my favorite thing about autumn is all the seasonal goodies that comes when the temperature gets cooler. Clinton Hall made sure to launch their new fall items, to satisfy all of us foodies out here. I couldn’t miss out on this.
I met with two of my friends at Clinton Hall’s Williamsburg location at the POD BK Hotel, and it was everything we needed after a long work-day: a chill interior, cool neon lights, hip and young energy, friendly ambiance, and (most importantly) a bar. We were welcomed by a smiley staffer (who was super sweet to us throughout the entire night), and the hostess walked us to our table. But as I was walking between the seats and looking around the cozy interior, I realized that there were board games, papers and pencils on each dining table. I was intrigued.
Seated, the waiter gave us the menus, and they are BIG. There was a huge variety of appetizers, salads, craft burger, drinks, and more. We eventually made up our mind, and decided to have the Dip Trio: a huge plate of butternut squash hummus, fresh guacamole, and spicy feta dip, served with veggie sticks and pita chips. It was so flavorful, light, and fresh at the same time. For the main dish, I picked the Clinton Hall dry aged burger, which is perfect for the cool weather. With a half a pound of 28-day dry aged beef, swiss cheese, crisps onions, watercress, and horseradish cream, this mouthwatering burger is as delicious as it looks. The fall season also calls for fresh honey. This is why my friend and I also split The Crispy Chicken Stack, topped with the delightful Mike’s Hot Honey sauce. This sweet-and-sour sandwich is just perfection for this time of the year. The sauce complements the crispy chicken perfectly, and is served with rainbow slaw, hot cherry peppers, fried pickles, and a side of French fries.
Our dishes were empty, our stomachs were stuffed, and our souls were happy. While we were enjoying the last sips from our wine and beer glasses, we heard the host welcoming everyone to Trivia Night (which explains the games and stationery on the table). And as I was trying to remember what AM means to win the game, I thought of how happy I was. This is all what I needed after a long day at work: good food, generous portions, amazing company, and fun times.
PS: AM stands for Ante Meridiem (Latin for before midday).
USA TODAY Wine & Food Experience 2019
On September 7th, 2019, the third annual USA TODAY Wine & Food Experience Tour kicked off at LeFrak Center At Lakeside Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Other locations and dates include Detroit, September 14; Indianapolis, September 28; Cincinnati, October 5; Louisville, October 19; Las Vegas, October 26, presented by MGM Resorts International; Scottsdale, November 2 & 3; Los Angeles, November 9; Chicago, November 16; and lastly, Naples, November 23.
Upon entrance, attendees were given a wine glass to try wines that were scattered throughout the venue. As you walk further, you’ll find an area called “The Cellar” where wine seminars such as Drink like a Somm, Partners in Wine, Urban Winemaking Master Class and Tasting, and Discover the World of Bordeaux Wines were happening. And since wine tastes better when accompanied by food, guests were also able to indulge in the Grand Tasting, which featured dishes from both emerging talent and renowned culinary leaders. Every food booth at this event had a suggested wine for their respective dish.
While some chose to taste food at the Grand Tasting area, others opted for a more personal experience by visiting the culinary stage. Visitors were able to watch culinary leaders Chef Alex Guarnaschelli, Chef Antoni Porowski, and Chef Sujan Sarkar of Baar Baar whip up a specialty dish in real time for guests to try immediately after. Food and wine lovers must attend the Wine & Food Experience at least once.

I Love Panzerotti
At first glance, these turnovers look like calzones -- but don’t be mistaken. These are panzerotti, calzones’ fried and fluffy cousin.
Panzerotti are a street food staple from Apuglia, the southern region of Italy’s “boot.” Just as pizzas are to New York City, panzerotti are to Apuglia. I Love Panzerotti, founded by Angelo Magni and Giovanni Bonati, opened shop in March to share one of Italy’s most loved foods with NYC.
All panzerotti are made fresh with ingredients shipped weekly from Italy. The dough rests for 72 hours before being fried, ensuring each panzerotto is light and fluffy. I Love Panzerotti offers over a dozen filling combinations, from the classic tomato and mozzarella to dessert panzerotti stuffed with ice cream, smores, pistachio, or Nutella. They also have a heart-shaped panzerotto which is perfect for a cheese pull.
Truffle Ham Shrooms
If you like the aroma and umami from truffle, Truffle Ham Shrooms panzerotti is the way to go. The savory ham and juicy mushrooms perfectly balance out the intense truffle.
Pepperoni
If you want something classic, tangy, and meaty, get the Pepperoni. The tomato sauce is delicious and the pepperoni gives the panzerotti a hint of spice.
I Love Panzerotti is located 220 Varick St and will soon have a second location at Gansevoort Market. Visit for some amazing cheese pulls -- and if the food wasn’t enough of a draw for you, I Love Panzerotti is also partnering with Mary’s Meals, an organization to combat world hunger, so every panzerotto sold feeds a child in need.
Savor the Summer: The Thrillist Way
Summer. NYC. Booze. Food. You’ve guessed it, another Savor Your Summer event hosted by Thrillist. And for their 2019 edition, the media brand turned the entire Harbor House into a culinary haven.
The event attracted New York famous beverage brands Twister Tea, and Tequila Don Julio, as well as some of the city’s best restaurants: Morgan’s Brooklyn Barbeque, Black Iron Burger, Baar Baar, Ice Cream Co., The Happiest Hour, Harlem Shake, Burger & Lobster… It’s no wonder so many New Yorkers attended the event: The place was crowded with people sipping refreshing drinks, eating sizzling hot dishes, and tasting frozen delicacies. But savoring the summer is not limited to food and drink. The event also had many activities to entertain guests: from voting for the best dish, to playing games (like cornhole and ladder golf), taking photobooth pictures, listening to amazing live music, and much more.
Thanks to Thrillist, Summer 2019 never tasted so good. And luckily, this yearly event will be back in 2020, for another chance to enjoy the city’s best flavors.

Move over BLT, the Num Chick Sammy is here to take the title of the best sandwich.
Gnoccheria by Luzzo’s: Italy’s Gnocchi in New York
I believe that Gnocchi (potato-based-pasta) is one of the most mispronounced food words. To many, it sounds weird. It’s hard to read. It’s hard to pronounce. But it tastes delicious. And for all New Yorkers who are craving that particular Italian dish, there is a small restaurant in East Village that specializes in fresh, hand-made Gnocchi-and they just added new flavorful and creamy dishes to their menu. As an Italian food-fanatic, I couldn’t wait to get to the restaurant and taste their new recipes.
Gnoccheria by Luzzo’s embraces the coziness of an authentic Italian house: Dark-green walls. Vintage frames. Beautifully-aged, leather furniture. The smell of Italian cuisine. The stacked bottles of wine… It all made me feel like I stepped in the house of an old cook, in Naples. And the food there, had the same effect on me.
Starting with appetizers, my friend and I ordered a side of deliciously crunchy Calamari Fritti , and the Parmigiana di Melanzane. The eggplant dish is truly the most delicious I have ever had in my life. It melts in the mouth. It excites the taste buds. The portions are also so generous, that we went out for a little break, before attacking the main courses.
Outside, we got the chance to meet the owner of Gnoccheria by Luzzo’s, Anisa Moloney. It turned out that the restaurant is a family business: Her husband, Michel Luliano, is an Italian Chef, and the artist behind the recipes. The wife is the businesswoman, and the mind behind the business. The power-couple has many other restaurants around New York: Luzzo’s La Pizza Napoletana, Ovest Pizzoteca, Da Mikele, Luzzo’s Neapolitan Pizza & Wine Bar, Via Trenta Pizzoteca, Italian Cafeteria & Pizzeria, and the soon-to-open Ampia. Family businesses are an Italian norm, and the authenticity of the restaurant is palpable at Gnoccheria by Luzzo’s.
After our interesting chat, we were ready to go try what we initially came here to taste: the new gnocchi recipes. We started with the Aragosta: classic potato-pasta, with lobster tail and cherry tomatoes, in white wine sauce. The lightness of the ingredients compliments the consistency of the potato-pasta. It is rich in flavor and simple at the same time. Then, we tried the Truffle, which is made of purple potato gnocchi in heavy cream, with speck, parmesan, and shaved black truffle. This one is definitely heavier than the first choice, but the creaminess of the sauce is heavenly. Both of the dishes are generous, maybe a little too generous for just two persons. But the restaurant is living by the Italian saying: “A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle”. And more gnocchi, is never bad!
When in New York City and craving big quantities of fresh, hand-made Gnocchi, Gnoccheria by Luzzo’s is definitely the go-to-place. There, you’ll have the authentic, Italian, potato-pasta experience. And in case you were still wondering how to pronounce one of the most mispronounced food words: it’s “Nyo-key”.
Yara: The Authentic Lebanese Restaurant of NYC
Just like many in NYC, I came here full of motivation to pursue my dreams. And just like many in this city, this place grew on me with all of its uniqueness, weirdness, and beauty. But at times, I can’t help but feel homesick. Sometimes, I just crave my country’s nature, my country’s people, and mostly, my country’s food! Luckily, I’ve found the cure to my homesickness, in the midst of the concrete jungle. Yara is a new Lebanese restaurant that serves delicious, and most importantly, authentic Lebanese food: No fusion recipes, and no failed cuisines. Instead, Yara offers Lebanon’s real culinary experience.
I went there for the first time to celebrate the restaurant’s grand opening on Friday, April 5th. I didn’t know what to expect, but after tasting many disappointing Lebanese dishes in NYC, I was just hoping that Yara would give me a taste of home. And it didn’t fail to do so: The restaurant’s elegance and coziness charmed me: The oriental mosaic wall art was beautifully lit by dimmed lights. The contrasting brick walls and chimineas gave a comforting warmth to the décor. The huge cubic chandelier dazzled both of the restaurant’s levels with its luster. It just perfectly transmitted a modern version of the Lebanese conviviality and intimacy.
The restaurant was filled with happy people: Many were sipping from their fancy drinks. Others were taking pictures at the photobooth. Some were ordering drinks from the beautifully-designed bar, while others were dipping (THE REAL) pita bread into a delicious hummus and muhammara (walnuts and pepper dip). Everyone was enjoying their time, as waiters walked between guests, holding plates with bite-sized Lebanese food, that looked so appetizing and tasted even better!
The thing with Lebanese food is that it’s healthy, delicious, and pleases different diets: the vegan, the vegetarian, and the meat lover. And Yara has it all. On their opening night, they served triangle spinach pies, squared pastry filled with meat and pines, Kibbeh (dumplings made with bulgur, ground meat, pine nuts, and onions), white cheese pastry with herbs, big rounded Falafel (done the right way) and of course, grilled Kebabs. Served the traditional way (in skewers), the meat dishes were varied: Chicken, lamb meat, and Kofta (meat mixed with minced parsley, onions, and herbs). I truly LOVED every bite of everything I tasted. Even Yara’s signature cocktails reminded me of my homeland’s nature: The Honey Sour’s smoothness with its sweet aftertaste aroma, and the Easy Street’s freshness with its fusion of alcohol, cucumber, and ginger. For a minute, all of these tastes made me forget that I was in New York City. These flavors from home truly made me feel like I was having dinner with friends in Lebanon-and I’m not exaggerating.
I have finally found the conviviality and warmth of home, in the heart Manhattan. That night, I was cured from my homesickness, and now I finally know where to go to when I am craving a taste of Lebanon.
Kill Bar Preview Night - A Quentin Tarantino Themed Pub
Imagine the one place to drink Bloody Brides and SangRitas, bite into your “Kill Bill Burger”, socialize, and watch the screened Death Proof movie, all at once. You’ve guessed it: a Quentin Tarantino themed bar. It’s launch comes at the perfect time, now that the release of his new film, “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” (STARRING LEONARDO DICAPRIO AND BRAD PITT!) is approaching. Filled with a laid-back, positive energy, Kill Bar is a cozy gastro-pub in Williamsburg. Here, you can celebrate some of the greatest films, actors, characters, and one of the most talented movie directors of our time.
When I first stepped foot inside, on a Wednesday night, I didn’t expect to feel so much warmth and care from the staff. Everybody was smiling and considerate. The waiters were attentive. The bartenders were very engaging. The owner was super friendly. The staff was so welcoming, that I didn’t feel like I was surrounded by strangers.
As I was chatting about Tarantino’s famous feet shot, and sipping some of my delicious “Brooklyn Tap Water,” a plate of Buffalo Cauliflower was placed in front of me. “Would you like some?” asked the waiter. I bite into my food and delicious hot flavors explode in my mouth. The chef’s twists to her Tarantino-inspired recipes turn all of her food (including the Pussy Wagon Tacos, the Poppin Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeño, and the Hateful 8 Wings) into an affordable yet unique, and spicy, culinary experience.
After a long day, Kill Bar is the geek-out-on-Tarantino, casual, after-hours spot to chill at. Watch movies, meet other or new fans, have a drink, and eat that Kill Bill Burger, “the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast”-Pulp Fiction.
TGA NYC: The Experience
I don’t know how, but it took me a whole year to get over to TGA NYC, the luxe sports bar located on the ground floor of the midtown Crowne Plaza Hotel. Still, no need to whine about lost time. I’ve been to TGA, I’ve tried it, and the verdict is in: I love it.
A high step above the usual midtown sports bar, TGA is practically a carefully designed and high ceilinged piece of modern art. Even now, decorated for the holidays, the white christmas trees and twinkling lights remind guests that TGA isn’t just an ordinary “Done with the grind of the day” after work drink spot -- it’s a cool, “I made a zillion dollars out of nothing,” after work drink spot, complete with a back-alley beer garden and creative cocktails. And then, there’s the food.
My friend and I started out with a whopping three appetizers: A Loaded Mac and Cheese with shrimp, short rib, and bacon; the TGA Jumbo Crab Cake, served with pineapple relish, sour cream, and black bean sauce; and Risotto Croquettes filled with a creamy truffle sauce. Everything was delicious -- I stuffed myself silly -- but I have to give the top prize to the crab cake. I don’t mind pineapple on pizza, but I now love pineapple on crab cake. Not a combination I would have expected, but definitely one I hope to try again in the future.
The real star of the meal, however, was the risotto I ordered for my entree. While the dish can be ordered with steak, shrimp, mushrooms, or asparagus, I, at the recommendation of my waiter, chose the three cheese. I was not disappointed. My biggest fear with risotto is that it’ll be bland, but the three cheese was a far cry from -- my friend ended up abandoning his amazingly seasoned Braised Beef Short Rib to eat what, as he put it, was “the best risotto he’s ever had.”
A huge shout out to Chef Israel Calderon for his wonderful dishes and beautiful presentation. TGA NYC is truly an experience, and in addition to breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a happy hour, they offer what’s sure to be a world-class bottomless brunch on the weekends. So check it out! And maybe I’ll see you there -- because I’ve already made another reservation.

Surf City
Jersey City is no stranger to transformation. Over the last thirty-five years, the city has evolved from a dock and manufacturing town populated with immigrants to a bustling, industrial city with a financial district so powerful, it was given the moniker “Wall Street West.”
But more recently, it seems as if Jersey City is again in the process of shifting its identity -- from financial center to popular tourist spot. Seafood bar Surf City, located right on the edge of the Jersey side of the Hudson River, is my proof in this hypothesis.
Surf City, which draws inspiration from Caribbean cabanas and tiki bars, is a waterfront grill headed by Chef Franco Robazetti that serves up beach fare such as lobster rolls, crawfish, and mussels. This summer, Chef Robazetti, who was named champion of the Food Network hit show “Chopped,” plans to open a raw bar that will also serve sushi, sushi tacos, and poke.
In addition to its amazing seafood, Surf City boasts classic surf and turf options, including burgers and nachos. To go along with the meal, the restaurant offers a varied frozen drink menu, with drinks such as a Banana Colada (Pina Colada, Banana, Dark Rum), and the Island Fusion (Banana, Strawberry, Light Rum, and Coconut Rum).
However, great food is not the only draw of dining at Surf City. Visitors to the venue are also blessed with unparalleled views of the New York City and the Statue of Liberty. But most exciting -- at least in my opinion -- are the giant sized games available to play with it, including a full size shuffleboard court and massive Jenga. Did I mention you can play all of these games while huddled around a roaring bonfire? The perfect solution to those odd, chilly summer nights.
Jersey City isn’t quite the tourist spot it could be. But Surf City is a great, affordable eatery that is worth making the trek over the Hudson River for. Eat some seafood, enjoy the beach, get a little drunk, and explore the other side. Jersey City is shifting as we speak. Don’t you want to say you knew about it first?
Tabasco’s Best on the Block BBQ
On Thursday, June 7, 2018, foodies gathered at Blue Smoke, for Tabasco’s Best on the Block BBQ preview event. The event featured bites from Big Apple BBQ Pitmasters Amy Mills and Jean-Paul Bourgeois, as well as Tabasco’s own selection of sauces.
Tabasco brought the taste of Southern barbecue to New York City. Upon arrival, guests were offered cornbread with a sweet and tangy sauce, which transformed cornbread into a groundbreaking appetizer. Another starter was a twist on an American classic: macaroni and cheese with spicy breadcrumb accompanied by Tabasco Green Sauce. But, if you were aiming for a light appetizer and with a crunchier kick, homemade potato chips with sour cream sauce with chives and bacon would make your night.
After appetizers, guests were invited to a mouthwatering selection of barbecue dishes. Jean-Paul Bourgeois introduced the public to the fried-smoked chicken with Tabasco-spiked honey, broccoli and black eyed pea salad. Amy Mills, on the other hand, brought baby back ribs with tangy pit beans to the table.
To complement each meal and savour the BBQ flavors, Tabasco’s Best on the Block BBQ offered a refreshing and spicy Peperita (tequila lime juice, gentiane liqueur, agave celery bitters, and Tabasco sauce) to all of its guests. Other drink options were also available, ranging from craft beer to wine.
To finish off the delightful evening, guests were invited to dip chicken BBQ drumsticks into a chocolate barbecue sauce fountain provided by Tabasco. Chocolate barbecue sauce is the happy marriage between savory and sweet; at first, the smooth dark chocolate glides through your tastebuds, but then the kicks of Tabasco find their way through. If you fell in love with the sauce, Tabasco provided its bottled version on the way out.
The night certainly had a southern barbecue feel with a Tabasco bite to it. It was a finger-licking barbecue experience that would often require leaving New York. Yet, Tabasco brought it all and more to the Big Apple, allowing more New Yorkers to experience the real tastes of southern barbecue.

The Sound Bite Restaurant
The Sound Bite is New York's newest jazz club offering live music and a taste of Southern, Cajun and Italian cooking. Chef (and Emmy Award-winning news anchor) Julian Phillips teamed up with his wife, renowned jazz vocalist, Barbara King, to create new spot in Hell's Kitchen.
In celebration of the public opening on Friday, January 19, 2018, media were invited to preview the restaurant the day before. Guests entered at the restaurant to the melodic and mellifluous voice of Barbara King, who serenaded the guests all night long. The interior of the restaurant looked like something straight out of a newsroom. The restaurant theme marries media with jazz melodies and pays homage to both industries – fully equipped for live broadcasting and live jazz performances. In addition, the walls are filled with autographed headshots of media and jazz icons.
A cocktail tasting started the event, and the drinks were intoxicating in a good way. The unique cocktail menu consisted of unconventional flavors, and was curated by nutritional biochemist, author and explorer Alex Ott. Ott has crafted beverage menus in more than 300 of the world’s most well known establishments. The Sound Bite’s cocktail names are derived from slogans used in the news industry like “The Live Shot,” “The Crash & Burn,” and “The Headliner.” The crowd's and my personal favorite was definitely "The Kicker."
At last came the the tasting. The eatery specializes in blackened wings and fusing Cajun, Southern and Italian flavors. Julian's Famous Blackened Wings, Southern smoked Mac-N-Cheese were passed out, and not surprisingly, nearly everyone asked for seconds, and even thirds. The delicious wings were some of the best I ever had, and the seasoning leaves your fingersnails bit dark, so be sure to lick them good afterwards.
The Sound Bite opens to the public today, so be sure to stop by today and look for dishes like Julian's Famous Blackened Wings and "The Kicker" to go along with it. The space will feature live jazz music Friday and Saturday nights and is also wired for live productions.
The Sound Bite Restaurant is located at 737 Ninth Avenue between 49thand 50th Streets.
