Savoring Sichuan: A Night at SHAN NYC
Even days after our meal at SHAN NYC, located on bustling Smith Street in the heart of Cobble Hill, we’re still thinking about the incredible food.
Even days after our meal at SHAN NYC, located on bustling Smith Street in the heart of Cobble Hill, we’re still thinking about the incredible food. It was one of those rare dining experiences where every dish leaves a lasting impression, and the flavors linger long after the night is over. The perfect combination of bold Sichuan spices, masterful preparation, and a lively yet cozy atmosphere made for an unforgettable evening.
We began the night with two expertly crafted cocktails that perfectly set the stage for the meal. The Osmanthus Blossom was a delicate, floral concoction, its light sweetness providing a refreshing start, while the Umeshu Paloma offered a tangy, citrus-forward twist, balanced with the rich depth of plum. These drinks were the ideal palate prelude, preparing us for the feast ahead.
The appetizers immediately signaled that we were in for something special. The Pork Soup Dumplings were a revelation—thin-skinned parcels filled with succulent pork and a rich, savory broth that exploded with flavor at every bite. Paired with the Scallion Pancakes, which were crisp on the outside and chewy within, packed with the bright, fresh taste of scallions, it was a perfect combination of textures and flavors. The Pork Dumplings in Chili Oil rounded out our starters, each dumpling tender and bathed in a fiery chili oil that delivered the classic Sichuan heat without overwhelming the senses.
For our entrées, we indulged in a selection that showcased the best of SHAN NYC’s kitchen. The Chungking Spicy Chicken was the star of the night. Crispy, perfectly fried chicken pieces were tossed in a generous amount of dried chili peppers and numbing Sichuan peppercorns, delivering a slow-building heat that was both addictive and exhilarating. The texture and spice were in perfect harmony, making it a dish we couldn’t stop eating.
The Spicy Cumin Lamb was another standout. Tender and juicy, infused with the deep, earthy aroma of cumin and enhanced by subtle notes of spice, the lamb offered a rich and savory experience that lingered on the palate. The dish’s complex flavors were a testament to the careful balance of spice and seasoning that defines great Sichuan cooking.
We also couldn’t resist ordering the Mapo Tofu, a dish that SHAN NYC executes to perfection. The tofu, silky and delicate, was submerged in a spicy, fragrant sauce that delivered just the right amount of numbing heat from Sichuan peppercorns, balanced with garlic and chili for a hearty and deeply satisfying dish.
One of the surprise contenders for the best dish of the night was the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce. Velvety and flavorful, the eggplant was perfectly cooked, absorbing the sweet-savory garlic sauce that clung to each slice. The depth of flavor in this dish was remarkable, making it stand out as more than just a supporting player among the other entrées.
But if there was one dish that truly stole the show, it was the Stewed Fish Fillet with Chili Sauce. Delicate, flaky, and incredibly flavorful, this dish has quickly become my favorite of all time. The fish absorbed the spicy, aromatic broth perfectly, delivering a bold yet balanced taste of Sichuan cuisine’s signature spice. It’s a dish that will stay with me for a long time, and one I’ll definitely return for.
Every dish at SHAN NYC was crafted with care, showcasing the bold, intricate flavors of Sichuan cuisine without sacrificing balance or subtlety. It was a meal that stayed with us—each bite a new discovery of texture, spice, and flavor. The quality of the food and the skillful execution of classic Sichuan techniques made for an extraordinary dining experience that we won’t soon forget.
If you’re in New York and looking for a place that delivers an authentic Sichuan feast, filled with rich, unforgettable flavors, SHAN NYC in Cobble Hill should be at the top of your list. We’ll definitely be back.

Surviving Squid Game: The Experience
We recently had the chance to visit the Squid Game Experience in New York City, and I have to say, it was absolutely thrilling!
We recently had the chance to visit the Squid Game Experience in New York City, and I have to say, it was absolutely thrilling! If you’ve watched the show, you know how intense and gripping the games are, but nothing compares to actually stepping into the world and becoming part of the action.
The experience starts as soon as you walk in. The set design is spot-on—everything from the eerie playground to the ominous “guards” in their red jumpsuits makes you feel like you’re actually on the set of Squid Game. The attention to detail is incredible, and it really pulls you into the game’s atmosphere.
One of the highlights for me was participating in the iconic challenges from the show. From “Red Light, Green Light” to the nerve-wracking glass bridge, the adrenaline rush was real! Each game requires not only physical agility but also quick thinking and strategy. It’s a fantastic mix of excitement, tension, and pure fun. You get fully immersed as if your life depends on it (even though it doesn’t—thankfully!). The staff did an amazing job of creating a sense of urgency without it ever feeling dangerous. They strike the perfect balance between game immersion and safety.
There’s also a competitive element. You’re not just playing for fun—you’re playing to win. The energy in the room is electric, with everyone vying for victory, trying to outsmart the competition. It’s a great opportunity to team up with friends or make alliances with strangers, adding a layer of social interaction to the experience.
Beyond the games, one of the most unique aspects of the experience is the Night Market. After the intense gameplay, the market is the perfect way to decompress and take in the vibrant, immersive atmosphere. The stalls are filled with Squid Game-themed merchandise, giving you the chance to grab some unique collectibles or memorabilia to remember your adventure. There are also interactive photo ops, where you can snap some fun pictures with life-sized replicas of key sets from the show, like the iconic giant doll from "Red Light, Green Light" or even with the masked guards.
The market also gives you the opportunity to socialize with other players, share stories of your victories or narrow escapes, and reflect on the experience. It’s a fun, lively area that complements the high-stakes games and adds an extra layer of immersion to the overall event.
If you’re in NYC and looking for a unique, adrenaline-pumping adventure, I can’t recommend the Squid Game Experience enough. It’s not just for fans of the show—it’s for anyone who loves a good challenge and wants to experience something truly different. Whether you’re going with friends or solo, it’s an unforgettable time. Just make sure you’re ready to play by the rules or face elimination!
Ticket prices for the event start at $29 per person. The experience is currently running and continues through March 31, 2024, with daily time slots available from 10 AM to 9 PM. This gives you plenty of options to fit this thrilling experience into your schedule.
In short, the Squid Game Experience is a must-do for anyone looking for something fun, unique, and utterly thrilling. Would I go again? Absolutely. In fact, I’m already plotting my return for another shot at victory!

As an always on the go New Yorker with multiple side hustles and access to doordash, nutrition is sometimes the least of my concerns. Enter Wishbone Farms, an organic, farm-to-table meal delivery service based out of the Lower East Side. Created by a brother & sister team in Southampton, NY, Wishbone delivers healthy and interesting meals right to your doorstep, saving you the energy of meal planning, prepping, and grocery shopping. It’s perfect for someone like me, who cares about being healthy, but doesn’t want to sacrifice taste or time. Sound familiar? To see if the concept is really worth it, though, we tried Wishbone out for a week to see if it’s something we could commit to.
Part I: The Menu
The food options for Wishbone range between Italian, American, and Mediterranean, with an occasional Asian or Latino-inspired option. This was my order for the week:
Eggplant & Mushroom Meatballs
Chicken and Cheese Quesadilla
Honey Roasted Rainbow Carrots
Miso Tahini Cauliflower
Sesame Noodles with Chicken
Grilled Chicken Parmesan
Egg Salad
Chicken Fingers with Honey Mustard
S'mores Bars
I tried to order something from each of the cuisines they provide while also covering every meal, including dessert! On another note, I love that there are some unique flavor combos going on--that’s definitely a must when you’re feeding New Yorkers, who have access to practically every food in the world.
Part II: The Review:
First off, I loved the packaging! The tote bags they come in are super cute and reusable so +1 so being environmentally conscious. The portion sizes are also HUGE--1 order is supposed to feed 2-3, so as a single person, but honestly I think they could be stretched to five, especially if you have kids. As a single person, it took me almost 2 weeks to work through everything (another plus, in my book).
Now onto the tasting!
Eggplant & Mushroom Meatballs:
These had really great flavor and they’re an easy way to get extra veggies in! The only reason they’re not a 10 is because I didn’t find myself craving it throughout the week like I did with some of the other items. 9/10
Chicken and Cheese Quesadilla: Good! I personally prefer a more tangy quesadilla but I can see kids especially loving this. 7/10
Honey Roasted Rainbow Carrots: These were amazing! My only issue is that I wasn’t quite sure what the best way to reheat them was so I popped them into the airfryer at 350 for 10 minutes and just hoped for the best. Some of them came out AMAZING that way but some other ones were a bit chewier. So minus 1 point for consistency but still a really good side. 9/10
Miso Tahini Cauliflower:
Pretty much the same as the above--some pieces were SO good but then other pieces were a bit harder to chew on and I’m not sure if that was a reheating issue on my end. But still delish! 9/10
Sesame Noodles with Chicken:
I honestly did not have high expectations for this but was blown away! Not sure how authentic it is but I had to stop myself from eating both servings in one go and would definitely order again. 10/10
Grilled Chicken Parmesan:
Very solid! 7/10
Egg Salad:
Also very solid! 7/10
Chicken Fingers with Honey Mustard:
I know it’s almost impossible to go wrong with chicken fingers, but these were exceptionally good! Super thick and juicy and the honey mustard was truly the best I’ve ever had, I would easily buy a bottle of this if they sold it. 10/10
S'mores Bars: As a huge sweet tooth, this is what I was most excited for and they did NOT disappoint. I need a constant supply of these to be happy from now on I think, truly a must eat before you die. 10/10
Smore's Bar!
Verdict: DO IT!
Wishbone Farm meals made my life SO much easier, and I loved actually enjoying my food every time and not just eating things I concocted after seeing what was leftover in my fridge. If I have one criticism it’s that I’d love some general reheating instructions, but I’m also pretty sure anyone who is capable of ordering food online can also figure out how to reheat these. Overall, highly recommended on accounts of taste, convenience, and

Mari Crawford's "Bipolar Badass" is more than a one-woman show; it's a raw, unfiltered exploration of the complexities of bipolar disorder and mental health. In this performance Crawford fearlessly bares her soul, inviting the audience into her world through a series of vignettes across her life, peppered with moments of comedy and tenderness, told with vulnerability and courage.
From the moment Crawford steps onto the stage, her presence commands attention. Through a captivating blend of storytelling, humor, and reflection, she takes us on a journey through the (literal) highs and lows of living with bipolar disorder. With each anecdote and revelation, Crawford deftly dismantles stereotypes and stigmas surrounding mental illness, offering instead a deeply human portrayal that resonates on a profound level that subverts trope or stereotype.
What truly sets "Bipolar Badass" apart is Crawford's authenticity. She doesn't sugarcoat the realities of her condition, nor does she seek pity. Instead, she embraces her experiences with a fierce determination, transforming them into sources of strength, resilience, and most notably, comedy. In doing so, she empowers not only herself but also her audience, reminding us all of the power of embracing our truths, without romanticizing the messy complications of mental illness.
Crawford's performance is masterful, effortlessly transitioning between moments of levity and introspection. Her comedic timing is impeccable, eliciting laughter even in the midst of poignant revelations. Yet, it's in the quieter, more vulnerable moments that Crawford truly shines, drawing us in with her raw emotion and unyielding honesty.
In "Bipolar Badass," Mari Crawford has created a space beyond her show for a new conversation to be held about bipolar disorder and the portrayal of mental illness in the media. In this, she crafted a powerful testament to the human spirit and reminded us that our struggles do not define us, but are a part of the mosaic that makes up the human experience. "Bipolar Badass" is a must-see for anyone seeking to better understand the complexities of mental illness and for those who want to have their experiences seen, in what is finally a realistic portrayal of mental health.

RYNN: A Non-traditional Take on Thai
There are not 10, not 20, not 50, but a whopping 700 Thai restaurants in New York City. RYNN is doing something different.
There are not 10, not 20, not 50, but a whopping 700 Thai restaurants in New York City. A famous example of gastrodiplomacy, in which a country uses food as a means of globalizing and building international interest, Thai food in America is both lauded and criticized for its consistency. On one hand, it’s always good. On the other, every place is more or less the same. The arrival of RYNN, however, might just shake things up for the Thai scene. An innovative new restaurant in the East Village, RYNN is reimagining traditional Thai dishes for a culinary journey that aims to entrance Thai food aficionados and newcomers alike.
Strawberry salad, Li Tiang, Yum Geaw Tod
The concept behind RYNN, or "รินน์", posits the space not as a restaurant, but a vessel for creating memories. A quick look through their menu and it’s easy to see why—their offerings draw inspiration from cherished childhood experiences for bites that evoke nostalgia, yet are surprising enough to spark conversation. Take, for example, their Khao Soi Gai Tod. Typically served as a soup, the RYNN version forgoes broth for sautéed curried egg noodles alongside crispy chicken. Other changes include switching out classic green papaya salad (Som Tum) for a spicy strawberry one, and incorporating French techniques for a syrupy Thai Tea Crème Brûlée. The star of the show, however, is their Banana Roti dessert. A twist on fried ice cream, this offering features butterfly pea coconut ice cream alongside a banana that is wrapped in roti and fried for a treat that hits crunchy, salty, and sweet.
Khao Soi Gai Tod (crispy chicken with sautéed curried egg noodles)
Banana Roti Dessert
Drinks at RYNN offer a similar experience—interesting twists such as a Glass of Grass (Pandan Infused Vodka, Lemongrass, Coconut juice, and Grass jelly) and the Kopitiam (Coconut toasted Espresso)—are served up along with more classic drinks, such as Satay, with its Turmeric-infused Rum and Cucumber cordial, and the elegant Sodalite, a Yakult Clarified Negroni. All pair well with both the dishes and the space’s loungelike interior. It’s the perfect place for date night, or a girls night—especially fitting since the restaurant is completely women-owned.
So if you’re craving Thai but don’t mind a twist, check out RYNN the next time you’re in the EV. They offer a lunch menu Monday to Sunday from 12pm – 3:30pm, and dinner from 5pm – 10pm.

AnimeNYC with TurtleMe, creator of The Beginning after the End
Creator of the Tapas series The Beginning After the End, Tae Ha Lee, known as TurtleMe, is an extremely private person, with limited presence on social media and no photos tied to his pseudonym. Luckily, we were able to catch up with the author on everything from his feelings after his face reveal to his favorite anime at this year’s AnimeNYC.
As always, AnimeNYC delivers. Whether you’re a cosplayer, artist, or just an avid reader, the con is the place to be if you’re looking to connect with popular creators through the intimacy of a screening, panel, or good old autograph signing. This year, however, patrons were treated to something a little more intriguing than the average panel: a face reveal by reclusive web novel and comic author TurtleMe.
Creator of the Tapas series The Beginning After the End, Tae Ha Lee, known as TurtleMe, is an extremely private person, with limited presence on social media and no photos tied to his pseudonym. In return, his fans obsess over even scraps of his personal information. One con attendee, worried TurtleMe’s face wouldn't be photographed, was overheard offering $100 in exchange for a photo. Luckily, we were able to catch up with the author on everything from his feelings after his face reveal to his favorite anime without needing to take such drastic measures.
InvitedNYC: First things first: How was your face reveal?!
TurtleMe: It was…a whirlwind of emotion. I was excited, first of all, but nervous—Tapas planned this huge thing and I didn't think I was worthy of it, but walking out and seeing 400 people was very surreal.
InvitedNYC: It’s been a few years, but congrats on your novel being adapted into a webtoon! What is the process of adapting the novel to webtoon like?
TurtleMe: It was definitely a learning process. Before I even got to writing the scripts for the storyboard I worked with the editors and the artist in a very much back and forth process where I would give a document with my references and ideas and then they’d give me feedback or vice versa, so there was a lot of communication there….but I think just working as a writer on a webtoon is a great experience because you’re able to see everything come to life and also get the chance to edit the story once more.
InvitedNYC: You are an example of a successful self-published author. Now that you’ve been more traditionally published, how would you compare the two experiences?
TurtleMe: I think I'm a little bit biased, but now that I've been in both realms, I can say that being self-published was a little more freeing since I was able to explore different areas and have my own voice come through without any filter from a bigger company. So in that way—I was able to run a little wild. But the thing about working with editors and a marketing team is that I feel more professional than I was before. I really grew not just as a writer but as a content creator.
InvitedNYC: The Beginning after the End is such a great title. Did you already have the end of the story planned when you published the beginning, or did you figure it out as you wrote?
TurtleMe: I'd like to say I had everything planned at the start—that makes me sound smart— but I think I had a concept and I knew vaguely the direction I wanted to take the story but that I did not know the ending. It wasn't until I had many chapters written and expanded the world and added characters that I realized I needed a way to keep track of all those moving parts, so that pushed me to plan and outline better to see where things would connect in the past and the future.
InvitedNYC: Which part of writing do you find the hardest? How have you been able to overcome it?
TurtleMe: At first I felt like writing itself—the words, the sentences, dialogue tags—that was the most difficult because I was a beginner writer. Now that that's become a bit more automatic and instinctual, the bigger hardship is the main story and the side stories….how do I connect these pieces into the overall bigger picture in a way that’s digestible and fun for readers. It’s still something that I’m trying to overcome and I’m hoping that I'll do a good job and get better at that.
InvitedNYC: Do you read reviews of your work?
TurtleMe: Yes. I do. In the beginning I would start reading reviews and but then get tired of hearing all the feedback—even though some were good, human nature is to focus on the bad and that’s what my brain would dwell on—so I would stop myself from reading but then after a bit I would get curious and start reading again, so it was kind of a never ending cycle. But in the end it does really encourage me. Even the criticism has kind of become encouragement to me.
InvitedNYC: The series seems like it’s coming to a close soon. Will your next project continue to expand the TBATE world or will it be an entirely new idea?
TurtleMe: I still have a few years left of TBATE so at this time my focus is on that, but I do have a few ideas in my head that are running amok. Who knows, maybe I’ll jot them down when I have a break from TBATE, but whether or not they’ll be set in the same world is a secret. Sorry!
InvitedNYC: If you could be reincarnated into your own novel, which character would you want to be?
TurtleMe: Oooh…not an elf. I’ve killed a lot of elves. I'm not sure if there's a happy-go-lucky character I could put myself in because as the readers know I’m pretty hard on my characters, so I’ll give the ‘boring’ answer of Arthur. I’ve written about him for so long I feel like I know him and I think it’d be pretty fun.
InvitedNYC: Since we’re at AnimeNYC, what are some of your favorite anime? Are you reading anything interesting right now?
TurtleMe: The Gundams, Yu Yu Hakusho, Slam Dunk, Full Metal Alchemist…those are the kinds of things I grew up reading. Nowadays my wife and I enjoy Spy x Family together but I have to watch Chainsaw Man by myself because she doesn’t like the gore. On Tapas, I’ve been liking Father, Unrivaled and The Archmage Returns after 4000 years. They’re kind of similar to TBATE thematically since that genre’s become very popular now here in the states, but they’ve stood out to me and I really enjoy them.
Read TurtleMe’s The Beginning after the End on tapas.com or follow him on instagram or twitter for more updates on his work.

Monopoly’s new Edition – Play the Brooklyn Way
Right at a time where many of us might not be able to explore our new or old Brooklyn neighborhoods the way we normally would, Monopoly is offering its newest addition: The Brooklyn Edition. Released a few weeks ago, the new edition offers up to 6 players a fun way to remotely explore known buildings and locations in their area.
From finally buying a Brooklyn brownstone townhouse to finding metro day passes on the Q train, the game offers a broad variety of creative and well thought-through details showcasing the familiarity of creators with our beloved neighborhood. To further enhance the playing experience, creators such as Dennis Gavaghen, representative from Top Trumps USA, also “incorporated important feedback from locals to truly make this a fun and engaging game for Brooklynites and beyond”.
By doing so, they also ensured that even well-accustomed Brooklynites might discover some not yet well-known cultural attractions. The Community Chest in particular showcases the cultural diversity around Brooklyn by highlighting attractions such as the ‘The World of Good’ exhibition of the Jewish Children’s Museum.
But it's not just the cultural diversity that finds important recognition. The new edition also features small Brooklyn-based restaurants and businesses. From free cheesecake at Junior’s Restaurant to shopping at Awoke Vintage, players are provided with inspiration to take their explorations from the board to the street. A Monopoly fan herself, Liz Powers from Awoke Vintage is sure that “locals and visitors will be thrilled to play and what a great way to celebrate Brooklyn”.
So, if you are still looking for Christmas presents or fun ways to bring the whole family together for the holidays, the new Monopoly Brooklyn Edition offers a few hours of interactive engagement for locals, visitors and all those that have not yet had a chance to explore our beautiful neighborhood themselves.

Review: Liquidus by Tabula Rasa Dance Theater
At a time when many, certainly myself, may be doubting the possibility of live theatre and dance to adapt to these monumental circumstances, Liquidus by Tabula Rasa Dance Theater proves how live performance can still be stunningly powerful in the virtual format.
Liquidus begins with four NYC performers, who have subsisted without support, unemployment benefits or relief during this lockdown, on screen, each dancing from their own created stage in their respective homes. Although physically separated during the opening sequence, the digital boxes fade as they appear united.
Jonatan Lujan, Argentinian performer who tested positive for COVID-19, begins with his solo “Liquidus Vagus”. His movements juxtapose between gentle fluctuations and mechanical, reminiscent to me of that period of confusion and uncertainty when overwhelmed with media news of the approaching pandemic.
Japanese performer Noriko Naraoka, who also tested positive for COVID-19, performs next. The monotonous music becomes secondary to her gentle, self-comforting dance. She appears to be moving into a despairing embrace of acceptance into being trapped, although longing and reaching for something blocked out by the sound of the relentless machine and persistent beeping.
Winnie Asawakanjanakit, a Thai performer who tested negative for COVID-19, seems to embody being trapped in one’s own mind while in isolation with her eerie, almost ritualistic descent into chaotic powerlessness, her stage becoming a canvas as she brandishes paint on the enclosed box caving in around her.
The piece closes with Mexican performer Felipe Escalante, who tested negative for COVID-19, and is the Founder and Artistic Director of Tabula Dance Theater. Eerie sirening clashing with balletic upbeat tunes sets the tone, as Escalante viscerally explores through patterns of convulsing and stillness the kinds of powerless changes our bodies may go through during this time in confinement, paranoia or illness.
Felipe Escalante
The costumes coordinated by Executive Director Amy Fine Collins, designed by Geoffrey Beene, Noriko Naraoka and Sergio Perez echo the bold bodies and spirits of each dancer's piece.
The music by Felix Huerta creates a haunting soundscape against which the dancers seem forced to fight against, or conform too.
Despite the performance encapsulating an expression of painful feelings during this pandemic, there remains an element of hope. Liquidus seems to ask: can this period of monumental suffering shape change for the future, a positive remodelling of our connection with body and mind to emerge as a more empathetic humankind? Or will we be left in a darker place than before? The performers demonstrate the vitality of art in this time, thriving on the virtual platform, continuing to work our bodies and minds through the unignorable difficulties of these past few months towards a brighter future.
Don’t miss the final performance of Liquidus August 15th at 7pm EST, and visit the Tabula Rasa Dance Theater website for more information about upcoming performances.
Miami Swim Week Summit
Miami Swim Week Summit , an informative and engaging two-day zoom event created by Riviere Agency, was comprised of panelists well versed in the Swimwear Industry. Attendees who purchased a ticket to the summit not only had access to the live sessions on July 15th and 16th but also to the recordings of sessions, providing them infinite access to the insight given.
The summit actively kept the audience’s attention through allotting a portion of each panel's time to an interactive Q&A. The guests would send in any questions they had and the hosts alternated turns answering them. This provided guests with knowledge that not only the hosts thought was important for the attendees to know but that the attendees themselves deemed important for them to know. Moreover, it allowed for a connection between the panelists and guests to form. The seminar saw brilliant panelists such as Joanna Guinta, assistant editor at Sports Illustrated Swim, and Jessica Andrews, Fashion Director of Bustle.
Another intriguing factor that contributed to the success of the excellently executed seminar was that the group of panelists speaking changed every hour or hour and a half. The scheduled rotation allowed for over 35 presenters, giving guests a plethora of diverse information, guaranteeing that everyone would take away substantial amounts of information applicable to their businesses. The topics focused on were sustainability, body positivity, diversity and inclusion, PR, social media and digital resources, and more. Not only were the panelists diverse but so were the topics they touched on and the manners they addressed them in. Each one contributed unique advice that was inarguably helpful.
LaunchmetricsRiviere Agency partnered with Paraiso Miami Beach, Fashion Week Online, Miami Swim Week [dot] Net, California Apparel News, Launchmetrics, Imaxtree, FNL Network, and Fashion Monitor to produce the Miami Swim Week Summit event along with all the professional speakers that participated.
The event provided a great depth of inside knowledge that would enable designers to continue to grow their brand. The inside scoop into the industry is especially important to swimwear, resort wear, and lifestyle brands yearning to not only support their companies during the trying times of COVID-19 but to build them as well.
Although the event wasn’t able to be held in person, thanks to the dedication the Riviere Agency, their partners, and speakers have to the Swimwear Industry and those who compose it is clear by their perseverance of having the spectacular event online.
Diana the Musical Dazzles Broadway
On Monday March 9th the powerful story of a modern day princess was brought to the stage in a fanfare of music and costumes. The eagerly anticipated, Diana: A True Musical Story, opened on Broadway at the Longacre Theatre to uproarious praise.
Diana, the musical of a modern day princess
DIANA is the electrifying new musical about a woman who chose to be fearless, and as a result became timeless. When Lady Diana Spencer married Prince Charles, she instantly became a cultural phenomenon. Leading fiercely with her heart, she defied royal expectations to fall in line and stood for what she believed in, no matter how unpopular with her husband or mother-in-law, the Queen. Diana’s class and poise is captured in the stunning performance by Jeanna De Wall, while Charles’ cold and distant personality is expertly exemplified by Roe Hartrampf, on his Broadway debut. The drama of her legendary story was induced through catchy songs and standout lead performances.
Written by JOE DiPIETRO and DAVID BRYAN (Tony Award®-winning Best Musical Memphis), directed by Tony winner CHRISTOPHER ASHLEY (Come From Away) with choreography by Tony nominee KELLY DEVINE (Rock of Ages) and music supervision and arrangements by IAN EISENDRATH (Come From Away), this sensational production brings the legend of Princess Di to thrilling new life onstage.
The Camila cocktail available at Lillie’s Victorian Establishment
Worthy of particular mention is the fantastic costume design that really went above and beyond. Diana wore 36 different outfits, showcasing many of the princess’ icon looks, including her revenge little black dress that she wore the night Charles admitted his adultery with Camila. William Ivey Long, head of costume design, certainly succeeded in capturing the richness and regality of this royal story.
Lillie’s Victorian Establishment offers The Diana cocktail
In partnership with Diana the musical, one block away Lillie’s Victorian Establishment is introducing limited edition cocktails, inspired by the princesses legendary life story. On offer, The Diana which is made with Ketel One Peach & Orange Blossom, Lillet Rose, lemon juice, simple syrup and served with an edible rose petal garnish; The Camila complete with Empress Gin, pamplemousse, lemon juice, simple syrup and The Charles, a Knob Creek Rye Perfect Manhattan. Be sure to swing by Lillie’s before or after the show to savor the magic for just a bit longer.
Láolú's Exhibition at BOCCARA ART
Láolú Senbanjo is a performance artist, singer, songwriter, musician, human rights lawyer, and activist who held an engaging pop-up exhibit at Boccara Art from February 1st to March 7th of 2020. This two-floor gallery displayed all his wondrous works.
The Nigerian bred, but now Brooklyn based artist, used this exhibit to truly showcase that the world is his canvas. His mediums are diverse and range from canvases, musical instruments such as pianos and guitars, sneakers, motorcycles, outwear such as jackets and purses, and the intimate human body.
Láolú has named his technique the Sacred art of the Orí which derives its fundamentals from the Yoruba religious practice. This practice centers itself on becoming one with yourself or awakening the God in you (Orí). His spirituality is evident in his work as only one that has such connections with their being would be able to create such intricate works that are admired by all.
His artistic genius can also be seen in collaborations with renowned celebrities and brands including Beyoncé, Lupita Nyong’o, Alicia Keys, Nike, Starbucks, Facebook, Apple and more.
During his appearance at the exhibit on March 7th attendees were able to experience a live performance of his art in action as he painted guests faces and ones upper torso with white paint, creating beautiful and unique patterns.
The exhibit had lively music which guests engaged in actively, which Láolú himself partook in. It was visible that his art extended far past surfaces but largely included the human body too, as it awoke guests to their own movements.
As his art decorated the walls, the event clearly integrated itself with his creations. Upon first entrance, there was a painted motorcycle along with mannequins clothed in jackets and purses that were graced by his artistic sense. There was a hallway lined with a series of photos including him and his previous works that he's done.
The next two rooms downstairs contained large canvases with acrylic paint atop. A lot of his paintings were heavily focused on females. This method of expression was exuberantly expressed with a variety of colors such as reds, yellows, oranges, and greens. The brilliance of Láolú’s mind was displayed as he often contrasts black and white figures against the colorful background.
His pieces were moving. It was notable how heavily he invested himself in his work as each appeared to be an extension of his mind.
Láolú’s diverse geographical and occupational background is part of what makes his work so special as its contributions to his life experience display themselves in his work.

Metrograph Presents: Made in Hong Kong
Ten minutes through Fruit Chan’s Made in Hong Kong, and I’m hit with the impulse to say the film is 60% frame, 40% story. It’s beautiful. I’ve never seen a film so committed to its aesthetic, a film with words and shots and music married so seamlessly I’m aching to believe that the entire thing is a recording, and that Hong Kong is truly a place where grunge meets grain, and twanging strings accompany your every move.
But this version of Hong Kong is solely my own. In another ten minutes, it becomes clear that the Hong Kong Fruit Chan knows is much darker, more obscure. His protagonist, an arrogant, heroic delinquent named Autumn Moon, declares early on that “freedom comes first,”—a philosophy that seems easy in this lush, sunny world—but then spends the entire film fighting for it. Autumn wants the freedom to have sex—but the girl he loves is sick, in dire need of a kidney. Autumn wants the freedom that comes with power—but he’s poor, and hindered by a lack of education. Even at night, when most have the freedom to dream, Autumn is haunted by the bloody, unsent letters of a dead girl. He can hardly make a choice without an opposing force shutting it down, but, as the film goes on, it seems that this is the case for everyone living in Hong Kong. The city is plagued by triads, loan sharks, a convoluted health system—everything is off, soiled, even, and Chan communicates that with dirty underwear, milk-white blood, and a vicious, vengeful maiming. More than anything, it seems as if Hong Kong is broken.
In 1997, when Made in Hong Kong was released, the city was reeling with the aftermath of the Handover, which returned administrative control of Hong Kong from the British to the Mainland Chinese. Today, Hong Kong is embroiled in a series of anti-China protests labelled the Umbrella Movement. It is only fitting, then, that a film that so yearns for freedom is making a comeback. At its heart, Made in Hong Kong is a film that inspires rebellion—a film that decries subjugation. Autumn Moon never quite manages to gain the freedom he so craves. Will Hong Kong?
Made in Hong Kong will see its first U.S Release this Friday, March 6th, at Metrograph NYC.
