Facticerie: The Largest Fragrance Bottle Collection in The World

From Fabergé Eggs to traffic cones, the Guinness Book of World Records has seen some incredibly niche collections over the years—and in 2022, they’re adding a new one to their list. As of June 8th, businessman and collector Sudhir Gupta’s Factice Fragrance Collection has officially been recognized as the largest collection of its kind in the world, and can be viewed at the exhibit Facticerie: The Factice Collection now open in Hackensack, New Jersey.

But first—what is a factice? Simply put, a factice is an oversized perfume bottle made for display purposes. Sometimes filled, sometimes not, these items are rare treasures that are becoming increasingly harder and harder to find. For Sudhir Gupta, working at a perfume store after immigrating to New York from India in 1992, seeing a certain Nina Ricci Factice (pictured below) was like love at first sight. After saving up to buy it, Gupta proceeded to scout and purchase more and more factices to satisfy his passion. Today, he owns over three thousand of these factices, all well-preserved, extravagant, and precious.

But despite their aesthetic appeal, stores have moved on from using factices to advertise, instead relying on the pull of social media, celebrity, and salespeople. For Gupta, however, that makes his passion even more important. After all, the bottles are not just a manufacturer's sale tactic—each piece is a work of art, as well as a physical manifestation of fragrance history. By continuing to collect, he not only fulfills his passion, but is able to show exactly how magical and beautiful a perfume bottle can really be.

So if you’re an avid perfume collector or maybe just like pretty things, feel free to swing by the Factice exhibition in New Jersey to get a glimpse of this new world record! You can make an appointment at their site before stopping in, or just follow the collection for more updates or tidbits here: @facticerie.

"Comeback" - A Seaport Artois Event

Ask New Yorkers for their favorite slice and you’re bound to get at least 10 different answers. Some swear by Joe’s, others by the 99 cent, and still others by Juliana’s. The truth is New Yorkers just love pizza—which is why, in celebration of NYC’s reopening, Stella Artois is partnering up with South Sea Seaport over the course of the summer to offer an array of exclusive, one of a kind pizzas from a few of the best kitchens in town.

227043402_401130951351826_1167715816814477968_n.jpg
233789219_883803082572381_717065779919804012_n.jpg

A six part event series, Seaport Artois’s “Comeback” night, the fifth in its lineup, took place at Pier 16 in full view of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Guests were escorted through a photo-ready lounge area, complete with complimentary bottles of special edition Stella Artois, before heading over to the patio-like dining area, where they were greeted with the first slice of the night: a summery corn, pesto, and fontina slice by Barbuto’s chef Johnathan Waxman. Made with the freshest of ingredients, this slice was my favorite out of the three pizza interpretations—unique and flavorful, I wished out loud more than once that Barbuto would reopen just to add it to their everyday menu.

232506047_795102521180512_2386610308916748665_n.jpg

For our second slice of the night, my guest and I polished off an anchovy flatbread from La Vara in Brooklyn. With heaps of cheese and perfectly salted anchovies, this pizza interpretation was the perfect precursor to our third slice: a clam laden flatbread with oregano, chili flakes, and parsley. Both slices were delicious and just the right amount of bread to cheese to topping ratio—no easy thing, but, as every New Yorker knows, a surefire way to get a slice on a personal pizza favorites list.

228810984_159497086223146_139145522904881245_n.jpg
232902509_222376899804095_3909584504013406818_n.jpg

So if you’re craving a slice that’s slightly off the grid, be sure to stop by at Seaport Artois’ final event of the season on August 19th. Aptly named “New,” this event will feature pizza from a brand new city spot that’s been raved about, as well as the chance for guests reconnect with friends, family and the city they’ve missed.

Secure your spot at Seaport Artois at https://www.stellaartois.com/SeaportArtois and follow them on their instagram, @stellaartoisusa. 100% of the proceeds from this even will benefit New York restaurants and the James Beard Foundation.

Jungle Summer

Missed your trip to Costa Rica this year? The city’s got you covered. Standing out among the many pop-up restaurants taking over town this August is Jungle Summer, a new, limited-time concept at The Garret Cocterleria that feels like a breath of fresh, tropical air.

The first thing you’ll notice walking into Jungle Summer is just how lush everything is. Inspired by the tropical rainforests of South and Central America, the popup is decked out with a floor-to-ceiling plant installation designed by Nick Amoruso of GREENCITYdesign—perfect for photos. Adding to the ambiance is the decor: between the woven bamboo furniture, rattan lighting, and dried palm leaves it’s easy to feel as if you’re having a night out on the beaches of the DR rather than NYC—a definite plus in our book.

But what really sets Jungle Summer apart from other pop-ups this year is its cocktail menu. From the Coconut Knuckleball (toasted coconut, black pepper vodka, apricot, yellow watermelon) to the Tamarind Tambourine (saffron, pineapple, tamarind, mezcal, gin, guava), even the most liquor averse of your group will find something they’ll want more than just a sip of. Jungle Summer also has some top notch appetizers on the menu: both the Dragon Fruit & Mango Ceviche (dragon fruit, mango, coconut milk, yuzu, jalapeño, red onion, amaranth) and the Spicy Tuna Tartare (tuna, housemade spicy mayo, rice crackers, scallions, furikake) were to die for, and my guest and I actually ended up ordering one more of each before leaving for the night—trust us, that’s how good it was.

So if you’re craving a little bit of the jungle before the fall hits, be sure to stop by Jungle Summer. The popup is open Monday-Friday from 5pm-late, Saturday and Sunday from 1pm-late, and has DJs spinning Thursday-Saturday nights. Book your ticket to paradise via Resy today.

The 13th Annual Food Film Festival

IMG_0856.JPG
IMG_0837.JPG

There is no delicacy better than having flavorful food served to you while watching films about what it is you’re eating. As they say in the art world, you have to know the history of what you’re looking at, in order to understand the piece. The same goes for food. You appreciate it all the more once you know the backstory of the chef and restaurant. The Food Film Festival provides you with that irreplaceable experience.

Upon arrival at AMC Empire 25, VIP guests were shown to the pre-party room, where doors opened at 6:15. The room was detailed with dishes, all prepared by Chef Stephen Yen. As each plate was thoughtfully placed, it enriched the atmosphere of the room, along with the drinks that were served by The Shanty and New York Distilling Company. The food and beverages served at the pre-party represented the diverse neighborhoods that inhabit New York, from lox bagels and roasted nuts to hot dogs, and kimchi fried rice, along with cocktails, wine, and beer. This prelude excited guests, leaving them in cheerful anticipation for what the theater had in store for them.

Afterwards, all GA & VIP guests took their seats, George Motz, Festival Director and co-founder said a few words and then the first film began.

IMG_0850.JPG
IMG_0845.jpg

The first film was about Lagunitas Brewery which quenched the guests thirst with Lagunitas IPA. It was the first of seven items to be passed down the rows for all to try. The second film, directed by Liza Mosquito deGuia, featured Erik Ramirez, a chef of a modern Peruvian restaurant. Many of his dishes were showcased, however, when the Tuna ceviche appeared on screen, it appeared in front of the audience as well. This dish filled your mouth with a savory flavor. The third film excited the audience as it centered on a more specialized type of cooking: bugs. While Chef Joseph Yoon spoke about his passion for bugs in the film, everyone else was sitting on the edge of their seats waiting to try the cricket-crusted fried chicken.

The Food Film Festival is such a riveting event that not one but two restaurants revived just for it. The first was Gyro II, which festival co-founder, George Motz, actually directed the film for. The second was Ramen Shack. In between the gyro meat with the famous white sauce being served from Gyro II, and ramen broth from Ramen Shack, carnitas con queso with braised chicken was served. The significant piece in what may seem like a typical carnita is the Piaxtla tortilla. The brothers who now own the company have a family history going back to their father who used to be a driver for the tortilla factory. The concluding dish was a sweet treat: an Indonesian style coconut pancake. The film focuses on their stand that sells this authentic cuisine and how it’s making was due to the lack of its prominence here.

IMG_0853.jpg
IMG_0842.jpg

After the films came to an end, the night went on in what was the original VIP party room and the outside terrace. There was a surplus of dishes that were extensions of the Chefs, restaurants, and factories menus shown in the films. With each bite that the attendees took, the food left everyone with radiating smiles.

The Eight Senses NYFW 2019: Where Style Meets Comfort

The seasons may change, but the desire to be fashionable does not. The Eight Senses, a clothing brand located in the heart of SoHo, makes sure that, even amidst the cold of a New York Winter, trend is not compromised for the warmth of suffocating coats. Their variety of winter clothing for both men and women, displayed at their most recent fall fashion week show, left all who attended in awe. The appeal was in both the elegant styles and practicality that the warm yet spacious clothing provided. The outerwear was not just trend setting, but also logical for the harsh cold and quick morning outfit decisions which stands true to the brands vision: “To make sense”. Rather than dreading the cold, seeing this new collection leaves buyers not only ready for frigid temperatures, but looking forward to them, reassured by the fact that that these high-end pieces will be part of their winter wardrobe is a thought of solace.

A distinguishing item was an over the shoulder bag that unfolds into a coat. This flattering jacket is a must have for women in New York City. It eliminates the hassle of lugging a coat around when you are on the run and in need of both hands. Plus, it’s easy to store and saves you valuable closet space, which everyone cherishes. This adaptable item is especially perfect for the city as it is easy to use and its luxurious style is sure to match any event you attend in the frosty winter days. Not to mention, it’s available in a variety of colors which ensures that matching with your lighter layers will not be a problem

In the winter, your coat is your means of survival -- without it you can’t get anywhere. Hence, having multiple styles is essential. The Eight Senses allows you numerous options to choose from. The styles range from puffer jackets to warm fabric trench coats. A unique item is the backless puffer coat for men which enables a fashionable layering of clothes under it to be seen. It also provides spaciousness, allowing the opportunity to feel free from the typical restriction that comes from being bundled. The clothing is also abundant with pockets, guaranteeing sufficient room for whatever items accompany you on a day to day basis.

The Eight Senses most recent collection is characterized by  both style and comfort. It is an undeniable commodity that everyone seeks. Their fashion show was an enticing glimpse at the items to be available for purchase in Fall 2019.

African Community and Conservation Foundation Impact Benefit and Auction

Out of all of the gold-toned prose in Karen Blixan’s acclaimed memoir Out of Africa, there is a single line that stands out more than all the rest: “You know you are truly alive when you’re living among lions.”

DSC_7927 copy.jpg

It’s a sentence that manages to evoke not only longing -- “When will I get to live among lions?” but also awe --“How lucky is she, to get to live among lions?” Lions, after all, are beautiful and magnificent creatures, and to get to live among them is a rare, one of a kind experience.

Karin Schermbrucker 1.jpg

Unfortunately, however, our chances of living among the lions today are on the decline. The Colonial Africa of Blixen’s time was only the beginning of a long and terrible chain of events that has forced Africa into its current situation, where rapid industrialization, foreign influence, and climate change pose threats to not only lions, but to all the other wildlife and people living there.

Mike Sutherland - Wildlife Images (92 of 291) copy (1).jpg

Luckily, however, organizations like The African Community and Conservation Foundation are here to help. Founded in 2018 by the US Charity Friends of Peace Parks, The African Community and Conservation Foundation aims to preserve Africa’s wildlife and support  surrounding communities through anti-poaching, community outreach, and conservation programs.

Girls Empowerment.jpg

In order to raise some of the funds needed to support the future of these programs, The ACC held an auction at the elusive Chase Contemporary Gallery, where guests dined on hors d'oeuvres from Coco J’adore, enjoyed work from photographer’s Robert Dutesco collection The Wild Horses of Sable Island, and mingled with guests like fashion designer Donna Karan, Victoria Secret Model Sofie Rovenstine and Superbowl champion Justin Tuck.

In between cocktails and a dance performance from modern dance company Jennifer Mueller/The Works, guests were also treated to a speech from Brady Forseth, CEO of the ACCF. Now, I’ve been to my fair share of charity fundraisers, and more often than not, it’s easy to come away feeling as if the event is much more about the guests than the cause. But Forseth’s speech was nothing if not genuine. He spoke openly and directly about the problems facing African communities today, from the social stigma surrounding periods to the still present ritual of Female Genital Mutilation. He elaborated on the necessity of finding a sustainable way for people and wildlife to live together, and emphasized the importance of environmental education and female empowerment. Speaking about such a serious subject to a bunch of half-tipsy New Yorkers is not the easiest task in the world, but Forseth managed to make clear just how much he cared about his work with the ACCF, and how much more he felt could be done to push these communities forward.

So if you’ve ever  dreamed about living among the lions, check out the ACCF at their website, https://africanccf.org/about/, their instagram, or even go ahead and make a donation. Every little bit counts!

Secret Summer is back!

Secret Summer is back for it’s 5th year in a row! On Sunday August 4th music by the High & Mighty Brass Band filled the Foundry as attendees sipped on spirits and cocktails while dancing the night away.

IMG_0597.jpeg

My favorite drinks at the event were from the London Essence booth, Westward Whiskey booth, and Fizzy Fox booth. I liked trying all of the drinks, but after I found the ones I liked I continued to go back for more!

IMG_0687.jpeg

Luckily Secret Summer was also a food festival so I was able to munch on delicious eats while having a few drinks. Unlimited drinks were included in the ticket price but the food was not. The different food trucks and vendors had countless food options ranging from 10 to 15 dollars.

IMG_0704-1.jpeg

Bad weather couldn’t even stop this party. The event was half indoors and half outdoors and everything was absolutely beautiful until the sky opened up in the last hour. But since everyone had more than a few drinks in their system, no one seemed to mind partying in the rain.

IMG_0697.jpeg

The joint music festival, food festival, and spirit and cocktail festival sells out every summer. Be on the lookout so you can snatch up next year’s tickets! Check out their website and their Instagram to be in the loop!

A Night at Niblo's Garden

Screen Shot 2019-07-31 at 5.56.46 PM.png

Looking for the perfect place for a picnic in Brooklyn? It might sound crazy, but as of right now, my top suggestion is Green-Wood Cemetery in Greenwood Heights, New York.

Screen Shot 2019-07-31 at 6.00.41 PM.png

Hear me out. Picnicking in a cemetery might be controversial, but Green-Wood Cemetery isn’t an ordinary cemetery -- it’s a historic landmark, and one of the first open green spaces in New York City -- in fact serving as the inspiration for the creation of both Prospect and Central Park. But I, too, was skeptical -- until I visited the cemetery for one of it’s annual events: “A Night at Niblo’s Garden.”

Screen Shot 2019-07-31 at 6.02.45 PM.png

Held in honor of William Niblo, the owner of legendary New York Theatre, Niblo’s Garden, The event celebrates Niblo’s theatrical Victorian sensibilities, with fire eaters, contortionists, and musicians from the Bindlestiff Family Circus.

Screen Shot 2019-07-31 at 6.03.50 PM.png

In addition to the Victorian entertainment, guests were able to take a guided tour of William Niblo’s famed mausoleum with author Ben Feldman, who committed to the role by dressing up as Niblo himself.

Screen Shot 2019-07-31 at 6.02.13 PM.png

Still, if Victorian era games, flying doves, and picnics by the gorgeous Crescent Lake aren’t your thing, there are many other events hosted by and in Greenwood Cemetery, including historic trolley tours, twilight tours of the grounds, even specialized dance performances.

House of Showfields - The Most Interesting Store in the World

67166360_2388609281463767_8674820037875335168_o.jpg

The convenience and ease of online shopping has meant a decline in the inconvenient and not always easy brick and mortar shopping. You know, the kind of shopping where you’re not really shopping, but just following someone around while they touch things and exclaim over how cute it is. It’s no surprise that people would rather shop in a way that doesn’t require them to walk around, or leave their house, or even get dressed....but the House of Showfields is here to change that. BIG TIME.

67180261_2388609871463708_4103062754145861632_o.jpg

House of Showfields, monikered as “The Most Interesting Store in the World,” is a brick and mortar in Soho, NYC, that gives Brands a place to showcase their individuality. The store is chock full of cubicles and art dedicated to specific products from specially curated brands: Quip, Inkbox, Skura, NURIA, The Farmer’s Dog, and many, many more.

67192810_2388609724797056_5899335402954686464_o.jpg

But what really makes Showfields “The Most Interesting Store in the World” is its aims to facilitate “deeper offline connections” between brands and consumers. What does that mean? It means that the employees at Showfields are fully decked out in their brands gear. It means insta worthy installations with demos. It means performance art and conversations with the artist. It means edible art that you can both taste and take home. Showfields is fully committed to shopping as an experience, rather than a chore. By appealing to the senses of taste and touch, Showfields reminds us of what internet shopping lacks: interaction.
