Taste of Bushwick 2017

On the evening of Tuesday, June 13th, throngs of people gathered on a private block within the famous Boar’s Head warehouse at 24 Rock Street for the largest showcase of Bushwick’s vibrant culinary scene. The affair celebrated the 4th Annual Taste of Bushwick, which provided some relief for the struggles of keeping up with this trendy neighborhood’s seemingly endless list of new restaurants. The outdoor walk-around tasting festival kicked off what is becoming one of Brooklyn premier culinary events.

This year’s tasting has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 2014, which featured 12 vendors and 200 people in attendance. The 4th annual Taste of Bushwick is the biggest yet and has nearly tripled in size since the first, with an attendance of over 1,000 people. Whether it was the group of hippies walking two blocks from their $2000 closet-sized studio or the businessman who reluctantly ventured all the way from the island of Manhattan, everyone showed up and came together to enjoy delicious bites.

The event prides itself on celebrating the diverse flavors of the neighborhood with more than four dozen Bushwick restaurants, bars, and shops. Some of Bushwick’s most renowned culinary institutions convened at the outdoor space to rejoice the neighborhood’s active gastronomic life while offering tastes of their food and drink. All proceeds from the event benefit the upcoming 2016-17 Season of theater, dance, puppetry, and performance at the neighborhood’s Obie Award-winning, non-profit theater The Bushwick Starr, located at 207 Starr Street.

Participants included the new celebrated Caribbean-American BBQ spot Sally Roots; a veritable “battle of the Tony’s” with slices from Knickerbocker Ave favorites Tony’s Pizza and Tony’s Pizzeria & Restaurant; Sweetest treats from Big Gay Ice Cream; Bushwick’s very own dumpling factory Chef One; new brews from the Kings County Brewers Collective, and returning favorites such as Michelin-starred Faro, FINE & RAW Chocolate Factory, Montana’s Trail House, Tortilleria Mexicana Los Hermanos, Bushwick-brewed Bruce Cost Ginger Beer, innovative brewery Braven Brewing Company and dozens more.

The year’s event represented a wide array of Bushwick’s culinary and cocktail scene, both new and established, proving that Brooklyn’s gastro-culture rivals that of the mighty Manhattan. That's right! Bushwick has way more to offer foodies than just Roberta’s wood-fired pizzas.

An after party was hosted by Syndicated Bar with drink specials that had everyone on the dance floor. Between the spectacular fare, live music, and strong drinks, it is safe to say that everyone had an extraordinary time. It was the perfect summer night out. On a side note, with all the amazing food festivals this summer in New York, you can say farewell to your beach-body goals.

Big Apple Barbecue Block Party 2017

The fifteenth annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party, which took place on the weekend of June 10th to the 11th, was an unforgettable event that benefited the Madison Square Park Conservancy. The party which is held in Madison Square Park each year has become a Manhattan tradition since its initial debut in 2002. The event offered an excellent opportunity for New Yorkers to get a taste of delicious barbecue from pitmasters all over the country. This year, the Big Apple Barbecue featured summer fare from over 12 cities, including returning favorites like a whole roasted hog from Skylight Inn of North Carolina.

The event was entirely free to attend, and food and drinks were available for people to purchase. However, VIP passes were sold, which offered guests access to the VIP section with seating and tables where they could escape the summer heat. The affair began Saturday morning where a Bloody Mary Brunch presented by Kingsford kicked off the weekend. There were dozens of barbecue “pitmaster” stations, with each tent offering unique and individualized barbecues.

Barbecue lovers feasted on tasty ribs, sandwiches, brisket, sausage, chicken wings, beans, cole slaw, potato salad, pimento cheese, pretzels, corn on the cob, watermelon, milkshakes, pies, and refreshments. The culinary and drink lineup of businesses featured chefs and breweries from all over the United States. The lineup included 17th St. BBQ, Baker’s Ribs, Blue Smoke, Hill Country, Memphis Barbecue Co., The Salt Lick BBQ, Root & Bone, Kingsford Charcoal, Sony Square NYC, Tequila Don Julio, Guinness brewers project, Original Fried Pie Shop, and Sugaree’s Bakery.

Additionally, the Big Apple Barbecue party provided live concerts throughout the weekend. On Saturday, The National Reserve, Dead Horses, The Adam Ezra Group, and Antibalas performed, and on Sunday, Walker Lukens, Emily Wolfe, Chris Jacobs, and Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes performed. Furthermore, music lessons were offered for children at the fountain of Madison Square Park. People also enjoyed playing games of corn hole as they at their barbecue. Needless to say, the party was an ideal weekend outing for both children and adults alike.

Overall, this year’s Big Apple Barbecue party was an absolute success, and the amount of planning and organization that went into the execution of such a popular event did not go unnoticed.

Since its founding in 1981, Citymeals has delivered more than 54 million meals. Citymeals is the only nonprofit to focus on delivering nutrition meals to the city’s seniors in all five boroughs. Home-delivered meals provided by Citymeals enables them to age with dignity in their own homes and communities. More than 15,421 volunteers collectively spent 72,000 hours visiting and delivering meals to our neighbors. Through rain and snow, searing heat and bone-chilling cold, they trudge through the city lugging carts of food to homebound seniors struggling to get by.

This year, the event raised over $840,000, which will support the delivery of over 114,000 meals. Most importantly, 100 percent of tickets sales and donations fund the preparation and delivery of over 2 million weekend, holiday, and emergency meals for more than 18,000 elderly every year.

Internationally renowned chefs who donated their time and efforts included Daniel Boulud, Raymond Weber, Larry Forgione, Marc Forgione, Michael Psilakis, Maria Loi, and dozens more. These culinary legends honored the flavors of Mediterranean as they created fabulous dishes at tasting stations throughout the plaza. In a presentation to the audience, Beth Shapiro, Executive Director of Citymeals said “Our message is simple -- we are determined to ensure that no homebound elderly New Yorker ever goes a day without a nutritious meal delivered. Your presence here tonight makes this possible and we thank you.” When asked what her proudest moment with the organization was, a teary-eyed Beth said “No doubt, my proudest moment was our response to Hurricane Sandy. I had only been in this position for only twelve months, and we delivered 64,000 emergency meals, galvanized 836 volunteers, to walk up countless flights of stairs to make sure meals were delivered to not only our meal recipients but 10,000 other stranded elderly people. It was incredible, and I am incredibly lucky to work with the people that I work with.”

Mark Gusinov, Senior Vice President of City National Bank echoed Beth’s message by stating, “Every American deserves food security. This is especially critical today when anti-hunger programs are facing severe funding cuts. Your support helps organizations like Citymeals continue their life-saving operations.” With the leadership of Co-Founder Gael Greene, the annual event ensures that more than 18,000 frail aged New Yorkers will receive a nourishing meal, warm smile and friendly visit every day of the year. New York City is home to more than 1.4 million people over the age of 60. Due to the baby boom era, the city’s senior population is expected to grow 40$ by 2040. This organization needs support more than ever.

Partnership for Drug-Free Kids Presents All-Star Tasting

5ef81b6722e2ead2a6aafd28b8f40708.jpg

On Wednesday, May 31, the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids hosted their fifth annual All-Star Tasting at Chef Tom Colicchio’s Riverpark, one of Manhattan’s premier waterfront dining locations. The night celebrated the work of the Partnership in support of helping families struggling with teen substance abuse.

The Partnership was founded by a group of advertising professionals in the 1980’s when America was in the midst of a drug epidemic. The organization was created solely with drug prevention in mind but has adjusted to respond to the changing landscape since. Today, the Partnership additionally provides support for families and help for teens and young adults who already struggle with drugs or drinking.

The charity event kicked off with a VIP reception featuring Chef Jesse Schenker, owner of The Gander in New York City. Schenker, aside from being an executive chef, is also the author of  “All or Nothing: One Chef's Appetite for the Extreme.” He provided a special cooking demonstration during a private meet and greet with notable guests, such as the athletes from the New York Knicks, NBA Legends, WNBA players, and the New York Red Bulls, along with other celebrities.

Soon after, the remaining supporters were invited to take part in the main event--a lineup of samplings from some New York’s most prestigious restaurants and celebrity chefs. Stations included Atlantic Social, BLVD Bistro, Bona Bona Ice Cream, Craft, The Red Cat/Four J Foods, Fowler & Wells, Harlem Burger Co., Insomnia Cookies, Legends at Yankee Stadium, and macbar. Between tastings, guests enjoyed participating in a bid for luxury auction items. Specialists from Oasis Day Spa were also in attendance to provide guests with shoulder or hand massages.

The Partnership highlighted several guests of honor during the event. Chef Kyung Up Lim and Steve Millington were presented with the Culinary Spotlight award for their outstanding work at Michael’s New York, which serves classic American fare and features a beautiful sculpture garden. The Athlete Spotlight award was given as a tribute to the late NBA legend, Darryl “Chocolate Thunder” Dawkins. Dawkins was a long-time supporter of the Partnership who was passionate about the mission of keeping children off the wrong path. The award was presented to his wife, Janice Hoderman, who graciously accepted.

In the affair that saw incredible fare, worthy cause, and amazing vibes in a gorgeous setting, the All-Star Tasting was the perfect summer night out.

Billion Oyster Party

The Billion Oyster Party, a four hour event which took place at Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn, on Thursday, May 18th, was a delightfully entertaining and lively way to kick off the summer. NY Waterway provided a complementary and convenient ferry ride from Pier 11 to Red Hook for guests to arrive at the party in style.

Upon arrival, guests found a plethora of foods, including over fifty oyster farmers from all over the country, and from twenty of New York City’s premier restaurants. The food extended far beyond oysters alone, and included fish, clams, crab cakes, biscuits, key lime pies, and much more. All of the cooks, chefs, and farmers at their food stations were passionate about their craft and offered an abundance of knowledge on oysters, seafood, and marine health. Additionally, guests were able to listen to a live bluegrass performance while savoring the good company, delectable food, and refreshing bar drinks. Outside of the large open venue, the Billion Oyster Party All-Star Shucking Championship took place, offering a lighthearted and fun element of competition to the event.

The Billion Oyster Party’s mission was to promote the restoration of NY Harbor and the general oceanic environment as a whole. Students from the NY Harbor School attended the party and were able to offer guests information on the Billion Oyster Project, which is a New York Harbor Foundation ecosystem restoration and education initiative. A central goal of the BOP is to restore one billion live oysters in the local New York harbor. Proceeds from both the tickets and the silent auction went towards the cornerstones of the BOP, which are Shell Collection, Reef Construction and Monitoring, Oyster Production, and Public Engagement, and BOP Schools. Also, the BOP honored Arthur Imperatore with the Harbor Stewardship Award for his work in establishing New York Waterway. The BOP granted another honor, The Sea Change Award, to those involved in the production of the documentary film Saving Jamaica Bay.

All in all, this year’s party, which was the largest one to date, was both an unforgettable experience and a highly educational event. After experiencing all that the Billion Oyster Party had to offer, guests absolutely left feeling upbeat, pleasantly full from incredible food, and informed on an incredible mission.

The Tang Dynasty Ball 2017

Almost twenty years ago, in 1998, a simple fishing trip in the Java Sea turned into a remarkable historic discovery -- a ship that had been lost to the sea hundreds of years earlier, still filled with precious metals and ceramics. This discovery revealed that, as far back as the ninth century, societies of Southeast Asia had traded by sea as well as land.

The Asia Society of New York celebrated this incredible find with their most recent exhibition, “Secrets of the Sea: A Tang Shipwreck and Early Trade in Asia.”  This collection, featuring art pieces and cultural treasures that tell the captivating story of the earliest maritime trade in Asia can be viewed on display through June 4th.

The significant event was also honored on April 27th, 2017, at the Society’s Tang Dynasty Ball, where the serene indoor garden of the Asia Society Museum transformed into a extravagant venue. There, guests were regaled with the story of the ship’s travels from China all the way to Vietnam, India, and then the Middle East while enjoying a cocktail reception. Guests were then left to explore the pieces installed on the museum’s main floor while listening to a special performance by the Siong Leng Musical Association. The ensemble, who made their United States debut at the event,  played a beautifully arranged harmonic piece on traditional instruments.

As the night went on, the group continued to play as they led guests in a procession from the garden to the dinner room, where they were served a five-course meal crafted to parallel the intended route of the ship -- dishes from China, Vietnam, and the Middle East all made appearances. The evening continued after dinner for a lively hour of dancing and desserts. Co-Chairs of the event, Agnes Hsu-Tang and Oscar Tang, creatively captured the essence of the exhibition while hosting a tasteful night of celebration.

BCA 13th Global Food and Wine Experience

Black Culinary Alliance (BCA) is a nonprofit whose mission is to provide educational and professional opportunities for people of color (Asian-American, Native American, Hispanic, and Black) in the culinary field. BCA celebrated their 13th Annual Food and Wine Experience Friday, May 5, 2017, at the historic Guastavino’s in New York City. The much-anticipated event established a connection between billion dollar food service and diverse young talents.

This year, the event celebrated Hispanic leadership in the culinary field, with honoree George Carbonell of Empire Merchants being presented with the Vision in Wine Award. The award has been long honoring individuals who have demonstrated a dedication to building awareness and appreciation among people of color for the culture of wine through education.

More than 50 World-Class chefs offered some of New York’s finest food and wine talents to produce mouthwatering samples, including slow roasted BBQ pulled pork sliders, lobster mac spring rolls, and grilled Mediterranean bread pudding.

Attendees enjoyed these delectable bites with wine and spirits from around the world. Drinks from a diverse bunch of distributors were prepared--perhaps most notably, a Japanese Whisky cocktail garnished with burning orange peels.

The spectacular night ended with a raffle of prizes from various restaurants, caterers, and winemakers to raise proceeds for the organization.

Flyby Cures Hangover

Your stomach is queasy, your thoughts are disarrayed and your head feels like throbbing misery. We have all been there before. Common side effects of a hangover leading to us saying “never again”. But again comes, and so too does the whole process followed by the inevitable hangover. While 90 percent of the alcohol you intake is detoxified by your liver, the process can only happen so fast.  Typically, the more drinks you consume, the more those troublesome hangover symptoms are stimulated.  However, there is now a way to avoid the morning after migraines and not compromise on enjoying a night out with friends.

While many people have their own theories on how to speed up the post-binge recovery, only a few have proven to actually work for everyone. From eating greasy foods to chugging Pedialyte, there are many methods to recover from drinking. However, what if there was a preventative measure that you can take to stop the hangover from ever occurring? Would you give it a try?

On a trip to Japan, Eddie Haui, now creator and CEO of Flyby, was inspired by the result of trying a drinking supplement intended to reduce the negative side effects of over drinking.  Eddie spent over a year of in-depth research and testing to create a product available in the states to ease waking up after a night of drinking.  Flyby is now a hangover cure in capsule form, jam-packed with vitamins and nutrients to counteract the toxic buildup catalyzed by alcohol. The pills are gluten free and contain zero genetically modified ingredients to ensure the most organic nutrient replenishment.  Working with your liver, instead of against it, Flyby was designed through science to support the body’s natural rhythm of metabolizing toxins.

To celebrate their official launch, the Garret East hosted an event on March 28, 2017, inviting guests to be some of the first to experience Flyby.  Cocktails were complementary as well as individual packets for guests to grab before heading to the bar.  Eddie is proud to introduce the successful result of hard work and determination, hoping to relieve many of a rough day with Flyby. Next time you head out with your friends, be sure to pop two Flyby tablets, or three if the night is young.

The Lately

Chelsea just added a new bar to their already all-encompassing nightlife scene. LDV Hospitality and Den Hospitality, two of New York’s most exuberant restaurant groups teamed together to bring The Lately- a cocktail bar and restaurant in the heart of  Meatpacking. Located at 357 West 16th St, if the address seems familiar, that is because it was the former space of nightclub/celerity hotspot No.8. The Lately offers the rustic feel of an escape to a luxurious cabin upstate without ever leaving the city.  Guests can sit back in a booth, hang out in the living room area or relax by the bar’s glowing fireplace.  The decor is comfortable, yet modern and lively, a truly unique location for the area.

The drink menu consists of a tiered system to cater to the likes of all Lately-goers.  Tier one features classics and signature favorites such as the Moscow mule and margaritas.  The second tier elaborates upon these to create innovative concoctions utilizing fresh juices, amaro, and activated charcoal.  The last tier, and therefore the most daring, makes those timeless drinks everyone knows and loves unrecognizable.  Tier three options, The Glad Fact and The Ultramaroon, hardly mimic their tier one counterpart, but provide a whole new taste and blend of ingredients to the signature cocktail menu.

Coworkers can grab drinks after work during the week until 2 AM.  For the end-of-the-week crowd, the Lately will stay open until 4 AM Wednesday through Saturday.  For those who also want something tasty to complement their cocktail, the kitchen menu consists of dishes influenced by the street food culture of the city.

After a grand opening on March 24th 2017, the Lately is now open to the public and welcomes all to stop in, grab a drink, and have fun.  Work your way up to a tier three cocktail or, if you’re feeling adventurous, start off with the Ultramaroon.

On the evening of November 14, 2016, guests dined at the annual Food & Wine gala hosted by the New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.  The event was held in the lavishly designed Metropolitan Club in Manhattan.  Celebrated Chef Michael Anthony of Gramercy Tavern and Untitled at the Whitney Museum of American Art prepared his signature dish mushroom lasagna.  Dinner was paired with a carefully selected variety of wines from Tournesol and Caymus Vineyards.

Fox News Anchor and Analyst, Kimberly Guilfoyle, hosted the event in light of the NYSPCC and their philanthropic involvement with abused children. She shared her personal connection to the organization, explaining that her work as a district attorney's office prosecutor this past year further encouraged her efforts in aiding endangered children.

Adam Rapoport, Editor in Chief of Bon Appetit Magazine, took the stage as the evening’s guest speaker. Lydia Fenet, auctioneer of Christie’s, facilitated this year’s reverse auction to fundraise proceeds for the NYSPCC’s Trauma Recovery Program.  This program offers specialized therapies for children who have endured physical or sexual abuse, traumatic grief, and family violence.

Executive Director of the NYSPCC, Dr. Mary L. Pulido, also took the stage to share with guests the importance of protecting children from harm.  Her heartfelt message explained that they are the go-to agency of New York City and emphasized the need to help their children recover.

The NYSPCC has earned worldwide respect for their commitment to protecting and reshaping the lives of neglected children.  Their welfare services have investigated more than 650,000 cases in regard to more than two million children.  Through research, communication, and training, they have been able to grow their services to provide counsel and prevent abuse nationwide.  The organization’s unique services are instrumental in responding to the needs of children who have been abused.

2nd Annual Serving up Smiles

On the evening of October 24th, CURRENT, Chelsea Piers welcomed the 2nd annual “Serving Up Smiles” Tasting Event hosted by the enCourage Kids Foundation.  Sought-after restaurants and chefs of New York City prepared their famous recipes offering samples for guests to taste-test.  More than 250 guests attended in support of the enCourage Kids Foundation whose dedication and passion has inspired children and families for 31 years.  NFL Legend Tony Richardson, retired NY Giants player Christian Peter, Olympic Medalist Sasha Cohen, and Z100 Host Shelley Rome were among guests showing their support for the organization.  Prizes from Broadway show tickets to a meet-and-greet with Eli Manning were auctioned throughout the night as a contribution to the cause.

EnCourage Kids aims to unify families with similar circumstances, easing the day-to-day difficulties with the encouragement of a community.  The foundation brings smiles and excitement to children facing life-threatening illnesses with opportunities to enjoy family outings and programs.  Every program is developed with the specific and individual needs of the children in consideration, to ensure a fun but safe environment.

While the night showcased the tremendous dedication of enCourage Kids, the spotlight was shared with the Amodeo Family whose dedication to their family is uniquely inspiring. Frank and Bendetta Amodeo are parent ambassadors who have been a part of the foundation’s bonded community for five years.  One of their two sons, Nicholas, is blind, developmentally challenged, and often undergoes seizures, but above all, he is brave.  Frank spoke to guests, highlighting the strength of the families within the organization and how much they truly appreciate the programs offered by the foundation.  In our interview, Frank and Bendetta described that when their son is happy, there is no greater joy to them as parents, “when he laughs and smiles and is dancing, that’s all we want.” Their hope for the next five years of enCourage Kids is that it doubles in size.  “It’s about growth, support,” Frank concludes.

Chef Chris Nirschel, otherwise known as “Culinary Bad Boy”, also prepared a speech, emphasizing the impact enCourage Kids has made in the lives of the families they benefit. He was honored to be a part of the evening and has been inspired by the organization’s efforts. Nirschel has been a partner of enCourage Kids for six years and explains that the tremendous turnout and generous donations are because people truly care about the organization.  “When I see the parents and some of the kids that have been through surgeries, going to Jets’ Games, Giants’ Games, met by celebrity chefs, it’s touching,” Chris explained.

The evening raised $225,000, an inspiring total that will benefit children and their families directly.  Executive Director, Michele Hall-Duncan said, “Our goal for tonight… is three-fold. We want everybody to have a fantastic time, enjoy all of the offerings of the chefs and specialty drinks. We want to raise their awareness about enCourage Kids and raise funds in support.” Michele was thrilled the night was an overall success.  She explained how enCourage Kids supports families at a time that is overwhelming and challenging, “When you receive a diagnosis that your kid is sick, you’re plunged into this world of chaos and confusion.” EnCourage Kids, as Michele also explained, is not specific to a particular illness, something she believes sets them apart from other organizations.

The individuals who have given their time and opened their hearts to the organization have truly brought joy to so many families. Passion has always been at the core of the organization. EnCourage Kids is excited about the future, with plans to expand their reach to many more families faced with medical challenges.

We want to personally thank Frank and Bendetta Amodeo, Chris Nirschel, Tom Murro, and Michele Hall-Duncan for their time in speaking with us.

Food Film Festival NYC

The Food Film Festival does not do enough justice in describing what this is all about. It's an experience!

How many times have you watched a film (for me, it's almost anything on Food Network) and saw something that looked incredibly tasty and wished you could sample it? The idea of the Food Film Festival was born from that very craving.

The Food film Festival marked its 10th anniversary this weekend at AMC Empire 25. The festival offers a unique experience where guests get to actually taste the foods they see on the screen right in the comfort of their own seats. It was a dream come true for food and film lovers alike. Since 2007, the festival has been showcasing films that use food and beverages as thematic elements. What makes this event so special is the fact that guests are able to sample the items that they see on the screen.

The four-day festival which ran from Oct 20th to the 24th showcased independent films accompanied by different dishes featured in said films.

Opening night (Best of a Decade!) revisits the best films from the fest's ten years and offers treats from Amanda Cohen’s Dirt Candy, The Brooklyn Star, Max & Mina’s Ice Cream and more.

On the second night (Taste of Louisiana), the theme was celebrated Cajun cooking with Volcano Bread from Laugarvatn Fontana Spa, Pickles from Leibowitz Pickle Works, Pizza from Denino’s Pizza, BBQ Shrimp Boule by Chef Jude Tauzin, Spring Rolls by Jeannie Ongkeo, and Peach Cobbler with Vanilla Ice Cream by Chef Jenny McCoy. The highlight of this night was definitely the alligator dish from City Pork Brassiere.

On the third night (Food Porn Party), the festival’s rousing Food Porn Party returns, with extreme eats from Meyers Bageri, Top Pot Donuts, Breads Bakery, Night Kitchen and many more, to accompany films that are essentially beautiful shots of food — aka food porn. The famous Chonut was a must try, and the night ended with a strip show – appropriately named food burlesque.

And closing night (Eat Japan!) was all about the Land of the Rising Sun with an amazing selections of food from Patisserie Tomoko, chef Karl Palma’s Takoyaki, Japanese iced coffee, mochi and last but not least, ramen.

In addition to drinks and the numerous courses served during the films, each night included an after party with even more food based on the night’s theme. One thing's for sure, this will be the tastiest film fest you've ever attended.

All Food Festival events benefit important non-profit organizations, such as the Food Bank For New York City, The Billion Oyster Project, The Good Food Project and GrowFood Carolina.

These unique kinds of events is what makes us so fortunate to be living in a place like New York. I thought it was such a fun experience and can't wait to see what they'll bring us next year!

Jazz Age Lawn Party

Over the weekend, retro revelers journeyed by the thousands  to Governors Island to participate in the 11th Annual Jazz Age Lawn Party, sponsored by St-Germain. At this event, free-spirited flappers and dapper gents were transported back to the height of the Jazz Age in a day of live music, savory treats, and, of course, period-themed St-Germain elderflower cocktails.

Michael Arenella, who threw the first Jazz Age Lawn Party back in 2005, hosted the event, reawakening the music of the Roaring Twenties with his Dreamland Orchestra. Other spectacular performers at the event included Gregory Moore and The Dreamland Follies, Roddy Caravaella & The Canarsie Wobbler, The Minksey Sisters, and many more.

The backdrop of vintage shopping vendors and a dance floor packed with people learning the Charleston was ideal for guests wishing to show off their intricate costumes. The women wore flapper dresses, fringed, ruffled, and dripping with jewels. They accessorized with pearls and sun hats, but, most importantly, their parasols. The men wore pastel suits, decked out with bowties, suspenders, and newsboy caps.

Besides a fabulous array of costumes and activities, the party also boasted a variety of cocktails by St-Germain, created by Julia Reiner, and they did not disappoint. Personally, I had the St-Germain Cocktail, made with sparkling wine and mineral water with a lemon twist, as well as the Flapper’s Delight, a concoction of St. Germain elderflower, juniper, and mint. It was like having summer in a glass and it fit seamlessly with the cheerful (albeit hot) atmosphere of the party.

The Jazz Age Lawn Party was ridiculously fun, real proof that you can still enjoy yourself even in 100-degree heat. This party only seems to get better with age, so make sure to look out for it next year!

House of Kim Crawford

On Wednesday, August 3rd, @kimcrawfordwines hosted the House of Kim Crawford, transforming the beautiful townhouse of 80 Washington Place, Greenwich Village into a summery lounge, complete with beautiful art installations and avant-garde decorations.

A display of golden balloons framing walls of the townhouse.

Upon entering, guests were immediately greeted with champagnes glasses filled with Sauvignon Blanc. Other offerings included Pinot Noir and wine infused slushies.

In addition to these treats, there was a gorgeous set up for guests to take plenty of pictures for their social media accounts, as well as an in house artist who did portraits on the spot.  Both of these party favors were tried out by actress and esteemed guest Kate Bosworth.

So, the next time you’re looking for a beverage to be the star of your party, look no further than Kim Crawford Wines.

The townhouse had a staggering price of $31.5 million dollars, there was no doubt that Kim Crawford Wines pulled out all the stops for this extravagant event.

Special thanks to Jamie from ShadowPR.

Orange is the New Black Premiere Party

The cast members of Orange is the New Black took a break from their Netflix prison show to better the lives of women who face the reality of prison. Last Friday, the Women's Prison Association (WPA) held a premiere party for Season four of Orange is the New Black at The Ainsworth in New York. The star-studded event included a screening of Season 4 Episode 1 followed by a live musical performance by actress Jackie Cruz.  All proceeds from the event benefited WPA, serving women and families involved in the criminal justice system.

The WPA was founded in 1845 and is the nation's first organization that is solely dedicated to working with women who have history with the criminal justice system. The WPA is a not-for-profit organization that works with women at all stages of criminal justice involvement. The organization promotes alternatives to incarceration by making positive changes in their lives. Inside prison and jail, WPA is a great source of support for the women and a resource to them as they plan for life after prison. After the women are released, the WPA also helps them establish the lives they want for themselves and their families in the community.

For all the OITNB fans, this event was a dream come true. Everyone got to mingle with some of their favorite characters from the show and it was a wonderful time.

The Ainsworth even had a special Absolut drink called "The Flaca Shocka"  which was a big hit with the crowd.

After all the stars and guests arrived, everyone settled down and the first episode of season 4 was shown. It was an amazing experience to see the reactions of the cast members as they saw themselves on the screen. Every time a cast member was on the screen, the crowd cheered.

After the showing of the first episode, actress Jackie Cruz (who plays Flaca) took to the stage and wowed the crowd with her amazing voice. A few other cast members also joined her on stage, the biggest surprise being Annie Golden who plays the mute character Norma on the show.

My favorite part of the night was when I had a chance to chat with Piper Kerman - whose real life experience is the inspiration for character Piper Chapman in the show. Kerman also serves on the board of the WPA. Kerman told me that she is still in contact with a lot of the women she met in prison and is doing everything she can to help them better themselves.

Everyone makes mistakes, and since these imprisoned women have served their time, they do deserve a second chance at life.

Guest of a Guest and Cointreau's Summer Soiree

La Sirena is Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich’s first new restaurant to open in New York in nearly a decade. A week ago, Guest of a Guest and Cointreau invited attendees to celebrate summer in the recently opened outdoor rooftop space of the new restaurant. Cointreau cocktails and extravagant Italian hors d’oeuvres were everywhere. My first thought as I entered the party was, “I’ve died and gone to food heaven!”

As soon as I walked into the room, I felt like I was immersed in the essence of summer. Strings of exposed light bulbs hung between the white trellis-like walls and guests placed their citrusy cocktails on tables beside vases of red and orange bouquets.

Guests could choose one of Cointreau’s signature Rickeys, including a Pink Peppercorn Rickey created by Mario Batali himself, or they could create their own Rickey by choosing from an array of fresh ingredients on the Cointreau’s DIY Rickey Bar.

Waiters were constantly offering new and different foods to sample, which was great because I doubt anyone could stop at just one. One waitress came by with a specialty of La Sirena, Cocoa Caramels with Gold Leaf, and at my eagerness to try it,  she smiled and said, “No one can resist the sweets.” Oh, how right she was!

This new venture of Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich is a little different than their other restaurants. The menu is not specific to any one area or any one specific type of Italian cuisine. It is a broader menu, and the restaurant is a modern version of an upscale Italian trattoria. The menu offers antipasti, pasta, meats, and seafood. Some of the dishes are even prepared with a mind toward sharing, such as the New York Strip Steak for two and a tasting of two pastas for the table.

The restaurant is also unique because of the large outdoor space available to diners during the warmer months. It was the perfect setting for this summer soiree. We could mix and mingle on the warm summer evening and enjoy the fresh air as we sampled the food and drink. The evening was a perfect way to celebrate the beginning of summer.
