Sweet Cheese Exhibit at the French Cheese Board
The French Cheese Board welcomed autumn with its latest Sweet Cheese exhibit. Guests were presented with a giant platter of cheese which included a variety of hard, soft, and blue cheeses. Bread, fruit, and other accompaniments were scattered all over for people to pair with the cheese and of course, wine was served. It was a sight to see. However, as extravagant as this giant cheese platter was, it wasn’t the main attraction. After all, this was a “Sweet” Cheese exhibit.
With the help of Alan “Batman” Batt from the Chef’s Connection, the French Cheese Board and NYC chefs Juan Pardo, Sylvain Delpique, Ikuma Motoki, Paola Marocchi, Joe Murphy, Gustavo Tzoc, and Clarisa Martino collaborated to bring us beautiful desserts which all used cheese as a main ingredient.

Background
In 2010, the gastronomic meal of the French was honored as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage and cheese was an integral part of this meal along with a starter, entree, and dessert. Cheese was traditionally served before dessert and people sometimes chose to have one or the other. But, the team at the French Cheese Board thought, “why do people have to choose?” and the Sweet Cheese exhibit was born.

African Community and Conservation Foundation Impact Benefit and Auction
Out of all of the gold-toned prose in Karen Blixan’s acclaimed memoir Out of Africa, there is a single line that stands out more than all the rest: “You know you are truly alive when you’re living among lions.”
It’s a sentence that manages to evoke not only longing -- “When will I get to live among lions?” but also awe --“How lucky is she, to get to live among lions?” Lions, after all, are beautiful and magnificent creatures, and to get to live among them is a rare, one of a kind experience.
Unfortunately, however, our chances of living among the lions today are on the decline. The Colonial Africa of Blixen’s time was only the beginning of a long and terrible chain of events that has forced Africa into its current situation, where rapid industrialization, foreign influence, and climate change pose threats to not only lions, but to all the other wildlife and people living there.
Luckily, however, organizations like The African Community and Conservation Foundation are here to help. Founded in 2018 by the US Charity Friends of Peace Parks, The African Community and Conservation Foundation aims to preserve Africa’s wildlife and support surrounding communities through anti-poaching, community outreach, and conservation programs.
In order to raise some of the funds needed to support the future of these programs, The ACC held an auction at the elusive Chase Contemporary Gallery, where guests dined on hors d'oeuvres from Coco J’adore, enjoyed work from photographer’s Robert Dutesco collection The Wild Horses of Sable Island, and mingled with guests like fashion designer Donna Karan, Victoria Secret Model Sofie Rovenstine and Superbowl champion Justin Tuck.
In between cocktails and a dance performance from modern dance company Jennifer Mueller/The Works, guests were also treated to a speech from Brady Forseth, CEO of the ACCF. Now, I’ve been to my fair share of charity fundraisers, and more often than not, it’s easy to come away feeling as if the event is much more about the guests than the cause. But Forseth’s speech was nothing if not genuine. He spoke openly and directly about the problems facing African communities today, from the social stigma surrounding periods to the still present ritual of Female Genital Mutilation. He elaborated on the necessity of finding a sustainable way for people and wildlife to live together, and emphasized the importance of environmental education and female empowerment. Speaking about such a serious subject to a bunch of half-tipsy New Yorkers is not the easiest task in the world, but Forseth managed to make clear just how much he cared about his work with the ACCF, and how much more he felt could be done to push these communities forward.
So if you’ve ever dreamed about living among the lions, check out the ACCF at their website, https://africanccf.org/about/, their instagram, or even go ahead and make a donation. Every little bit counts!

Liu Yong X RISHIKENSH SS20
Liu Yong, one of the top 10 fashion designers in China, wanted to redefine street and athleisure wear in his SS20 collection with Rishikensh. He succeeded in showing athleisure could be a lifestyle but failed in originality.
The show began with a contemporary ballet performance along to what seemed like a mix of Chinese and Indian tunes, which paid homage to Liu Yong’s heritage and the origins of the name Rishikensh.
Then, the runway began immediately following the performance. One by one, the models lit up the runway with bright neon and metallic colors whether it was the entire outfit or just used as a point statement. Even the makeup on the models were bright colors, used as a statement by a single color on the eyes, leaving the rest of the face natural. However, the designs of the clothes themselves were typical streetwear outfits, just with bolder colors. Liu Yong also included several transparent totes and duffle bags in this collection, continuing with 2019’s trend of transparent handbags. Although the designs weren’t anything surprising, he did successfully use comfort to sell athleisure as a lifestyle. The clothes looked lightweight and the cast was diverse in age and race, showing that his clothes embodied a sporty and comfortable lifestyle that everyone could adapt to. He specifically described this collection as one of, “Whether it’s yoga or dancing, you can do so in any of the designs - with a concentrated attitude. We use the softest cotton and other recycled textiles, so that our customer feels comfortable and conscious.”

USA TODAY Wine & Food Experience 2019
On September 7th, 2019, the third annual USA TODAY Wine & Food Experience Tour kicked off at LeFrak Center At Lakeside Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Other locations and dates include Detroit, September 14; Indianapolis, September 28; Cincinnati, October 5; Louisville, October 19; Las Vegas, October 26, presented by MGM Resorts International; Scottsdale, November 2 & 3; Los Angeles, November 9; Chicago, November 16; and lastly, Naples, November 23.
Upon entrance, attendees were given a wine glass to try wines that were scattered throughout the venue. As you walk further, you’ll find an area called “The Cellar” where wine seminars such as Drink like a Somm, Partners in Wine, Urban Winemaking Master Class and Tasting, and Discover the World of Bordeaux Wines were happening. And since wine tastes better when accompanied by food, guests were also able to indulge in the Grand Tasting, which featured dishes from both emerging talent and renowned culinary leaders. Every food booth at this event had a suggested wine for their respective dish.
While some chose to taste food at the Grand Tasting area, others opted for a more personal experience by visiting the culinary stage. Visitors were able to watch culinary leaders Chef Alex Guarnaschelli, Chef Antoni Porowski, and Chef Sujan Sarkar of Baar Baar whip up a specialty dish in real time for guests to try immediately after. Food and wine lovers must attend the Wine & Food Experience at least once.

Shaping the Edges of Education – New York Edge Young Professional Council Fundraiser
On Thursday, September 5th, the New York Edge Young Professional Council hosted a fundraiser that didn’t only offer spectacular views but also a crucial point of view. This year marked the 6th anniversary of the non-profit’s annual fundraiser which is, along with the Back to School Event on September 2nd, designed to provide means for a successful start of the new school year.
Hosted at the stunning triplex Penthouse at Hotel on Rivington, the fundraiser was intended to raise awareness, and, more obviously, funds, to help New York Edge continue to improve the paths of more than 40,000 school kids all around New York City. The organization was founded 26 years ago and has since then significantly impacted the lives of participating students.
This is also confirmed by some very impressive statistics. According to 86% of parents and 80% of participating school representatives, New York Edge’s programs facilitated significant academic improvement and success as stated on their website.
Another significant testament to the success of the non-profit was the substantial amount of attendees to the event. In addition to the truly breathtaking 360-degree view from the rooftop, guests were offered various means to entertain themselves or challenge their perceptions. Examples range from a free Instagram Wall with immediate print-outs to an open bar, delicious hors d’oeuvres and a silent auction with prices such as flight tickets with JetBlue.
Many of these ‘interactive stations’ were also connected to this year’s theme: Urban Graffiti. In acknowledgment of the talent and effort required for this form of art, several pieces by young artists were displayed in a small graffiti exhibition. But also people with less artistic skills didn’t lack opportunities to express themselves: Each guest was invited to leave their message and advice for school kids at the beginning of their school year on cards that would later be distributed across respective schools.
All in all, the event provided everything and more that one would expect from a night like this. But most of all, it authentically conveyed the extraordinary dedication and passion of the volunteers of the New York Edge Young Professional Council for every aspect of their work.
If you want to learn more about the important work of New York Edge and its Young Professional Council or get involved yourself and help improve the life of school children all across New York City, check out https://newyorkedge.org

Also making an appearance at the event was Tennis Royalty: Venus and Serena Williams traded in their tennis gear for a chef's apron and kitchen utensils as they showcased a friendly onstage cook-off. After a close contest, the sisters "tied" for best dish. But The biggest surprise of the night was when Former Heavyweight Champ Mike Tyson showed up. Mike was there to promote his most recent venture of a new line of CBD-enhanced beverages under the name DWiiNK.

I Love Panzerotti
At first glance, these turnovers look like calzones -- but don’t be mistaken. These are panzerotti, calzones’ fried and fluffy cousin.
Panzerotti are a street food staple from Apuglia, the southern region of Italy’s “boot.” Just as pizzas are to New York City, panzerotti are to Apuglia. I Love Panzerotti, founded by Angelo Magni and Giovanni Bonati, opened shop in March to share one of Italy’s most loved foods with NYC.
All panzerotti are made fresh with ingredients shipped weekly from Italy. The dough rests for 72 hours before being fried, ensuring each panzerotto is light and fluffy. I Love Panzerotti offers over a dozen filling combinations, from the classic tomato and mozzarella to dessert panzerotti stuffed with ice cream, smores, pistachio, or Nutella. They also have a heart-shaped panzerotto which is perfect for a cheese pull.
Truffle Ham Shrooms
If you like the aroma and umami from truffle, Truffle Ham Shrooms panzerotti is the way to go. The savory ham and juicy mushrooms perfectly balance out the intense truffle.
Pepperoni
If you want something classic, tangy, and meaty, get the Pepperoni. The tomato sauce is delicious and the pepperoni gives the panzerotti a hint of spice.
I Love Panzerotti is located 220 Varick St and will soon have a second location at Gansevoort Market. Visit for some amazing cheese pulls -- and if the food wasn’t enough of a draw for you, I Love Panzerotti is also partnering with Mary’s Meals, an organization to combat world hunger, so every panzerotto sold feeds a child in need.
Dancing the light away - Sunset Salsa
On Tuesday, the 20th of August, covered in the warmth of the last sun rays of the day, many Hudson River Park visitors stumbled upon quite an unusual scene: Every Tuesday evening, the park is swamped with hundreds of people dancing Salsa.
But as usual in this city, it is best to always expect the unexpected. This observation was also inspiration for the founder of the weekly free Salsa classes, Talia Castro-Pozo. Ten years ago, she decided to give the city something it already has but not always displays: diversity.
The weekly Salsa sessions, that are not only limited to Hudson River Park but happening all across NYC, are intended to make Latin culture more visible. Together with co-host Edwin, Talia invites people of all ages and backgrounds to come together and celebrate life at these sessions.
And every Tuesday, she succeeds. Not only is the event always in high demand, people also really seemed to openly enjoy themselves and let go of some of the day’s troubles with their evening moves.
Located right next to our beautiful skyline, the park was filled with laughter, joy and togetherness. People met, mingled and mixed dance partners as freely as it rarely happens in this busy city. Wall Street brokers danced with street artists, Republicans with Democrats and even the few grumpy people were soon swayed by the energy of the many children running around or dancing.
This observation is also the core of these events: joy, family and togetherness. Every summerly Tuesday, Hudson River Park provides an inclusive space that is vividly vibrant from its positive energy. Thanks to Edwin and Talia’s patient teachings and motivation, even beginners are able to discover their new passion for the traditional Latin dance.
But even if you are more of a savorer of the good and effortless things in life, the friendly staff of the conveniently located Beer Tent is always happy to help out. Just like the Salsa class, they are there every Tuesday evening to provide some sparkling energy after an exhausting but certainly worthy evening of Salsa.
Unfortunately, there is one small twist with the event: next week is the last Salsa session for this year at this location. If you don’t want to miss your last chance to join this or other events in this spirit, check out https://www.facebook.com/SunsetSalsaNYC/ for more information.
Buenos Aires, We Meat Again: The Restaurant’s New Steak Menu
I’ve already been to Buenos Aires to taste their brunch menu. And I was genuinely blown away. Can you imagine how I reacted when I first heard that the Argentinian restaurant launched its new beef platters? Curious and hungry, I just rushed to the East Village eatery.
Just like last time, every staff member welcomed me with warm smiles and escorted me to my dining table. It was full of red wine bottles, cheese platters, bread, and crackers (all from Argentina, of course). It looked authentic and exquisite. My taste buds and appetite were already aroused. As soon as I sat down, the waiter poured some wine in my glass and not any wine, but The Susana Balbo Signature wine, an Argentinian classic made only from the finest grapes from the highest vineyards in the country. It is also made with minimal intervention to allow for the purest interpretation of winetasters, and it perfectly accompanied the organic Argentinian cheese.
As I was sipping the wine, I could feel the alcohol kick in. Strangers sitting on the next table turned into friends. Argentina’s conviviality is palpable at Buenos Aires. As we were chatting and laughing, the waiters placed the first main course for the night on the table: sausages. Some were purely done with pork, others were mixed with meat, but all of them were delicious. Yet, the most impressive part of the dinner remains the meat tasting: The steak’s quality is just hea-ven-ly. The texture dissolves in the mouth. The meat is concentrated with flavors. I tried the filet mignon, the rib eye steak, the beef tenderloin, and even meat marinated in milk… I consider all of them, with no exception, a culinary masterpiece. The meat just melts and releases exploding flavors with every bite. There is no need to add salt or even Chimichurri sauce (which is obviously also delicious). And this is no coincidence. Bueno Aires imports all of its ingredients from La Pampa in Argentina. Instead of freezing the meat, the restaurant makes sure to ventilate the local produce while shipping them to New York. The premium meat is also 100% organic, antibiotic and hormones-free, and is grass-fed.
As a meat fanatic who moved to the big city a couple of years ago, I find it very hard to find quality meat in NYC. But Buenos Aires ended that quest of mine. This time, I was not blown away by the restaurant’s new menu. I was beyond that.
Savor the Summer: The Thrillist Way
Summer. NYC. Booze. Food. You’ve guessed it, another Savor Your Summer event hosted by Thrillist. And for their 2019 edition, the media brand turned the entire Harbor House into a culinary haven.
The event attracted New York famous beverage brands Twister Tea, and Tequila Don Julio, as well as some of the city’s best restaurants: Morgan’s Brooklyn Barbeque, Black Iron Burger, Baar Baar, Ice Cream Co., The Happiest Hour, Harlem Shake, Burger & Lobster… It’s no wonder so many New Yorkers attended the event: The place was crowded with people sipping refreshing drinks, eating sizzling hot dishes, and tasting frozen delicacies. But savoring the summer is not limited to food and drink. The event also had many activities to entertain guests: from voting for the best dish, to playing games (like cornhole and ladder golf), taking photobooth pictures, listening to amazing live music, and much more.
Thanks to Thrillist, Summer 2019 never tasted so good. And luckily, this yearly event will be back in 2020, for another chance to enjoy the city’s best flavors.

Secret Summer is back!
Secret Summer is back for it’s 5th year in a row! On Sunday August 4th music by the High & Mighty Brass Band filled the Foundry as attendees sipped on spirits and cocktails while dancing the night away.
My favorite drinks at the event were from the London Essence booth, Westward Whiskey booth, and Fizzy Fox booth. I liked trying all of the drinks, but after I found the ones I liked I continued to go back for more!
Luckily Secret Summer was also a food festival so I was able to munch on delicious eats while having a few drinks. Unlimited drinks were included in the ticket price but the food was not. The different food trucks and vendors had countless food options ranging from 10 to 15 dollars.
Bad weather couldn’t even stop this party. The event was half indoors and half outdoors and everything was absolutely beautiful until the sky opened up in the last hour. But since everyone had more than a few drinks in their system, no one seemed to mind partying in the rain.
Nerai – Delights from the sea nymphes’ fountain
Located right at the axis of modern aesthetics and Greek hospitality, Nerai has always been the perfect place to indulge in culinary adventures or to simply pass joyful evenings with people close to your heart.
However, this Thursday, the focus was less on culinary ventures but rather on Nerai’s impressive wine selection. As one of only a hundred NYC restaurants to win the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence, Nerai proudly presented its favorites in a semi-casual setting. Invited by Greek hotspot’s owner Spiro Menegatos and General Manager Michael Coll, friends, family and media tried — to only name a few — wines from Eklektikon, Cava Spiliadis and Craft & Estates.
The complimentary tasting was paired with delicious Greek hors d’oeuvres that made up for some beautiful compositions. Tasting fresh panikopita and zucchini croquettes from Executive Chef Moshe Grundman after a sparkling sip of light white wine certainly qualified for an extraordinary experience.
However, in traditional Greek manner, the restaurant also complimented the modern ambiance of the event with some fascinating story-telling. Not only did I learn about the evolution of Greek cuisine in Manhattan, I was also fortunate enough to taste the same wine Aristotle had mentioned more than two millennials ago: Limnio. To be fair, I did not find any direct quote of Aristotle to prove this claim but a thorough research at least revealed that there is enough evidence to consider it more than a myth.
But the most fitting anecdote of Greek mythology might be found in the origin of Nerai’s name itself. As explained to me by Will Maringo, one member of the very attentive and kind event staff of this evening, the word is derived from the term ‘Nereid’ which is commonly understood as synonymous for Greek sea nymphs.
For more information about the treasures of their fountains, or more specific those of Nerai’s wine cellar which can hold up to 4,000 bottles, and the restaurant itself, check out https://nerainyc.comor visit their Instagram on https://www.instagram.com/nerainyc/?hl=en
Arthur Avenue: The Italian-American Experience
A day in New York is, simply, what you make it. An artist at heart? Stop in at MOMA. Or the Met. Only here for the parties? You can dance your heart out way up at The Top of the Standard, or way down at The Village Underground. But if you’re a foodie looking for an authentic culinary experience, there’s only really only one place for you: Arthur Avenue.
Colloquially known as the “Little Italy of the Bronx,” Arthur Avenue has escaped, for the most part, the encroaching gentrification that has plagued much of New York. Here, you’ll find no shortage of businesses that can tout the claim of being “multi-generational,” which makes it unique not only by New York standards (considering the very few businesses that survive a year, let alone generations), but unique from a culinary standpoint. Shaped by both Italian immigrants and their American descendants, the food on Arthur Avenue is one of the few places in the world where you can find food that is authentically Italian American: a little Italian, a little American, and a whole lot of love.
The proof is in the pudding -- or in this case, the cheese; especially if you stop by Joe’s Italian Deli, a casual eatery serving up fresh, hand pulled mozzarella. Their bocconcini, along with a few slices of salty prosciutto, is all but the perfect start to the day -- but I wouldn’t say no to their antipasto, and frankly, their Hitman Hero is mouth-watering. For a tourist, however, the deli can offer something even more delicious -- between the rows of canned tomato sauce and the school kids stopping in for sandwiches, Joe’s happens to be, in my opinion, a rare glimpse into the more local side of Arthur Avenue.
But if you’re more interested in the iconic, there’s plenty of that on the avenue as well, starting with Mario’s Restaurant, one of those aforementioned multi-generational eateries. Known for their red sauce fare, which includes Neapolitan style pizza, house made manicotti, and all types of parmigiana, Mario’s Restaurant is a classic both inside and out, even boasting a cameo in The Sopranos and a name drop in Mario Puzo’s The Godfather.
But perhaps more impressive than the food is the space itself. What started off as a six person pizzeria is now twenty-nine person restaurant accentuated with velvet lined chairs, soft Italian Opera, and warm oil paintings. Mario’s is proof that a little hard work can go a long way, and Regina Migliucci-Delfino, the current, fifth generation owner, is a testament to that -- she is, without so much as a blink, capable of reciting from memory every dish on the menu, as well as its components. Still, the family continues to pay it forward: during Tuesday to Friday dinner hours from now through October, patrons who wish the family well for their 100th year anniversary will receive one free pizza appetizer for that table (with the purchase of an entrée).
If you’re looking for more traditional Italian fare, however (read: No white sauce! No chicken parmesan!), Arthur Ave has its fair share of that as well, most recently MangiPasta, a Naples transplant serving up fresh, ‘choose your own style’ pasta dishes that include Cacio e pepe, Pesto Rigatoni, and a personal favorite: homemade Ravioli with Aglio, Olio e Peperoncino. Under normal circumstances I don’t even like ravioli, but I was sorely tempted to purchase an entire bag of MangiPasta’s to bring home with me. Trust me on this one.
And then, of course, there’s dessert. There are plenty of great options on Arthur Ave, but you can’t go wrong with Egidio Pastry Shop, a landmark bakery vouched for by the The New York Times and enshrined on an October 2018 cover of The New Yorker. The shop offers up tray after tray of Italian cookies and endless variations of biscotti, but locals will point you to the cannolis, all hand rolled and filled to the brim with cream. You might think you won’t have room after a day full of pasta and pastrami -- but don’t worry, you can get some to go.
So if you’re looking to get away from the hub and bub of Manhattan, a day trip to Arthur Avenue might just be the thing for you. In between meals, feel free to stop by the Botanical Gardens, or even check out the Bronx Zoo. Like I said...it’s what you make it.
The Springs NYC
New York is great and all, but there are definitely some times where the concrete doesn’t cut it, and I crave Cali -- palm trees, beaches, and dreamy 80’s pop. Cut to The Springs, a combination bar, lounge, and patio located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
With colorful umbrellas, pink flamingo decor, an outdoor patio and plenty of frozen cocktails to go around, The Springs is a step into 70’s era Cali, a la Palm Springs. And this year, they’ve handed another West Coast element to their repertoire -- Desert Hideaway, a conceptual food truck serving elevated bites.
Created by Executive Chef Natalie Mitchell, Desert Hideaway is a comfort food lover’s dream. In addition to classics like Baja Shrimp Tacos and Fried Chicken, Desert Hideaway also serves up a delish Fried Pimento Cheese dish, a Grilled Cheese with Bacon and Jam, and my personal favorite: the panko crusted avocado, served with a delish cilantro sauce and a few stray jalapenos.
In addition to the bites, of course, The Springs offers an extensive cocktail menu, with drinks such as the Desert Star (Milagro Silver Tequila, Dolin Blanc, Cucumber, Mint & Thai Chile), the Neon Palm (Spring 44 Gin, Grapefruit Cordial, Lillet Rose, Lemon & Absinthe), and the Midnight Mirage (Mezcal, Campari, Blackstrap Rum & Pineapple).

In preparation for National S’Mores Day on August 10th, Squish Marshmallow invited guests to visit Camp Squish on July 30th. In the heart of the East Village, Squish Marsh created a campsite in their store for guests to make their own delicious s’mores. Thanks to Chameleon Cold Brew and Ritter Sport, guests were able to choose from different kinds of chocolate and flavored cold brews to enjoy with their toasted marshmallows.
Creator Katherine Sprung started Squish Marshmallows after getting hooked on making marshmallows. Squish aims to make quality, delicious marshmallows by using natural ingredients. They are made in small batches and hand-cut, and with flavors like Birthday Party, Banana Pudding, Rocky Road, and Smoothie Bowl, Squish has changed the way customers think about the simple marshmallow.
In honor of National S’Mores Day, Squish will open its doors to the public from 1 pm to 10 pm on August 10th, but until then, marshmallow- enthusiasts can shop products online, attend Marshmallow Cooking or Decorating classes, and even order Squish online. Don’t miss your chance to experience this urban campsite!
What the Cruff!
Waffles, donuts, cookies, and ice cream: every sweet tooth’s dream menu. Clinton Hall NY and Stuffed Ice Cream are bringing this dream to life with the What the Cruff Waffle, a glorious tower of ice cream that adults and children alike can dig into.
Clinton Hall’s WTF waffles are already over the top, but now with Stuffed Ice Cream’s cruffs, or donuts stuffed with ice cream, they’re on a whole new level.
Starting from the bottom, we have Stuffed Ice Cream’s cookie monster cruff sandwiched between two of Clinton Hall’s birthday cake waffles, then stacked with scoops of Red Velvet, Ferrero Rocher, Cookie Monster, and Snickerdoodle ice cream, and finally topped with a birthday sugar cone. If that wasn’t enough sugar, the whole platter is decorated with frosting, sprinkles, whipped cream, and cookie crisp cereal.
The What the Cruff Waffle is available in four Clinton Hall locations (FiDi, Williamsburg, 36st Street, and 51st Street). There is a limited availability each day so get yours before they run out! You can also try the Snickerdoodle ice cream, a flavor Stuffed Ice Cream created just for Clinton Hall, at Stuffed Ice Cream’s East Village location. Both the What the Cruff Waffle and Snickerdoodle ice cream are only available until the end of August, so get your sugar high on!
Savanna Rooftop
Rooftop Bars in Manhattan are all the rage, but there is one noticeable drawback: when you’re in the city, you can’t see the city. There’s nothing like being at the top of a skyscraper in the middle of midtown and not being able to see the actual NYC skyline. However, there’s a simple solution to this perennial problem: Savanna Rooftop in Long Island City.
Just a few stops from midtown on the M train, Savanna Rooftop is a contemporary cocktail bar drawing inspiration from the savannas of Africa, with eucalyptus wood, grassy ground, and colorful murals from Brooklyn artist N. Carlos J. It’s truly a step into paradise -- and that’s even before you get to the view. Completely open-air, Savanna Rooftop boasts 180 degree skyline views of Manhattan from it’s 12th floor perch, as well as stunning views across Long Island.
And while Savanna’s most stand out feature is absolutely it’s view, there’s a lot to be said for both it’s cocktail and small bites menu. The drinks, crafted by mixologist Chad Dutkowski, includes a mezcal based Coco Camino, a frozen Hula Daiquiri and a frozen Gin & Tonic. And as for the menu -- well, you can’t go wrong with bites. There’s carne asada tacos, chicken satay, and my personal favorite: the savanna beef sliders, featuring red onion, gruyere cheese, and sriracha mayo.
So if you’re in Long Island City and looking for a relaxed party vibe, check out Savanna Rooftop. But even if you’re not in LIC, I suggest making the trip out there anyways: the view alone is worth it.

A Night at Niblo's Garden
Looking for the perfect place for a picnic in Brooklyn? It might sound crazy, but as of right now, my top suggestion is Green-Wood Cemetery in Greenwood Heights, New York.
Hear me out. Picnicking in a cemetery might be controversial, but Green-Wood Cemetery isn’t an ordinary cemetery -- it’s a historic landmark, and one of the first open green spaces in New York City -- in fact serving as the inspiration for the creation of both Prospect and Central Park. But I, too, was skeptical -- until I visited the cemetery for one of it’s annual events: “A Night at Niblo’s Garden.”
Held in honor of William Niblo, the owner of legendary New York Theatre, Niblo’s Garden, The event celebrates Niblo’s theatrical Victorian sensibilities, with fire eaters, contortionists, and musicians from the Bindlestiff Family Circus.
In addition to the Victorian entertainment, guests were able to take a guided tour of William Niblo’s famed mausoleum with author Ben Feldman, who committed to the role by dressing up as Niblo himself.
Still, if Victorian era games, flying doves, and picnics by the gorgeous Crescent Lake aren’t your thing, there are many other events hosted by and in Greenwood Cemetery, including historic trolley tours, twilight tours of the grounds, even specialized dance performances.

Escape Virtuality
Anyone who’s ever seen Minority Report knows the coolest part of the entire movie: the VR Room. A futuristic “arcade” where users can experience almost anything they want -- from winning an Oscar to carrying out a murder -- Virtual Reality, or “VR,” is the ultimate form of entertainment...and it’s finally here. Escape Virtuality, an entertainment complex on West 29th Street, is an entire space dedicated exclusively to providing the most incredible interactive experiences in all of New York City.
The first thing you’ll probably notice when entering Escape Virtuality is the giant rock climbing wall. At first glance, it might seem pretty easy -- maybe what, nine feet high? But there’s a catch: the wall is actually a screen, and guests can choose various challenges that will limit where and how they will climb -- meaning at one point, you will be stuck seven feet in the air, listening to people chant your name, and wondering how and earth you are going to squeeze yourself between the virtual barriers without falling on your face. But don’t worry! There’s a mat to catch you if you slip up, and it’s as comfy as can be -- which I can confirm for you myself.
If the rock wall is a little out of your reach, though, there are plenty more activities to choose from. Although I never would have expected it, one of my favorite experiences was a multiplayer shooter game that consisted solely of me running around (virtually) and shooting at another person. It seemed so simple, but something about the 360 view and being locked into a machine made everything seem amazingly real. But if you’re really looking for “realness,” I suggest the XTREMATIC, a “virtual reality simulator extreme machine,” where you can experience “extreme” scenarios such as white water rafting, flying, and my personal favorite -- bungee jumping. You can go in skeptical, but I promise the lurch you feel when the bungee cord springs and you launch into the air is as real as they come.
In addition to augmented reality and virtual reality games, Escape Virtuality has a number of Escape Rooms located on their upper floor. Unfortunately, the rooms were closed on the day I visited, but with puzzles that include a motion stimulated runaway train, a goblin quest, and a mysterious ghost collector… I guess I just have no choice but to go back.
