EL Education was launched 25 years ago when a group of visionary educators from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Outward Bound USA won the New American Schools national competition for ‘break the mold’ school designs with an inspiring proposal that put students’ learning and character development together at the center of the way school ought to be. In 1993, the first ten ‘Expeditionary Learning’ schools opened in five cities. 

For 25 years, we have been collaborating with educators to create great public schools where they are needed most. Our network has grown to 150 innovative public schools, district and charter, K-12, in urban and rural communities across 30 states, and today, we also partner directly with school districts to transform teaching through our open-source EL Education Language Arts curriculum and coaching. 

Since our ‘break the mold’ founding, EL Education has been lifting our national vision of what student achievement can be. Our students build character as they master academics; joy and challenge married in the service of greater purpose. Learning is joined to civic contribution. 

We have reached more than a million students across America with an education that prepares them to succeed as scholars and active citizens, contributing to a better world.
