Big Deal Speakeasy Casino's 10th Anniversary Party
The Big Deal Speakeasy Casino (1 E 28th St) marked its 10th anniversary with a glamorous celebration that transported guests straight back to the roaring 1920s.
The Big Deal Speakeasy Casino (1 E 28th St) marked its 10th anniversary with a glamorous celebration that transported guests straight back to the roaring 1920s. Hidden behind an inconspicuous freight elevator door in NoMad, the venue opened into an opulent speakeasy adorned with velvet seating, casino tables, and the smooth sounds of live jazz setting the tone for the night.
The evening wasn’t just about the ambiance—it was a celebration of the games that have kept New Yorkers coming back for over a decade. Guests crowded around blackjack and craps tables, guided by professional dealers who offered insider tips and tricks. Chips were cashed in, bold bets were made, and cheers erupted at every win, creating an atmosphere that was equal parts exhilarating and sophisticated.
Adding to the immersive experience were craft cocktails courtesy of Broken Shed Vodka and Rosaluna Mezcal. Glasses clinked and conversations flowed as the speakeasy’s signature mix of mystery and elegance carried through every detail of the evening.
At the heart of the celebration was founder Wendy Rubin—a serial entrepreneur, filmmaker, and creator whose vision has redefined interactive entertainment in New York City. In 2015, Rubin opened Big Deal Speakeasy Casino following the success of her pioneering Big Deal Casino Academy, the state’s first and only licensed dealer school. By day, the space serves as a training ground for future casino dealers, preparing them for careers in the industry. By night, it transforms into a glittering Prohibition-style event venue, making it the perfect setting for private parties, milestone celebrations, and unforgettable nights of entertainment.
Ten years on, the Big Deal Speakeasy Casino remains an unmatched destination for high-energy fun. The anniversary party not only honored a decade of unforgettable nights but also reinforced the venue’s place as a one-of-a-kind gem in New York’s nightlife scene.

The Hamptons summer scene officially ignited with a one-night-only takeover by hip-hop legend Ja Rule at Calissa in Water Mill on Friday, June 13th. The occasion? The exclusive Hamptons launch of his new whiskey line, Amber & Opal—and the crowd came ready to toast.
Calissa’s already-iconic bar transformed into a stage for Ja Rule himself, who stepped into bartender mode to pour up his favorite custom cocktails using Amber & Opal. Guests enjoyed whiskey-based cocktails, wine, and Mediterranean hors d’oeuvres, all while soaking in the signature Calissa ambiance—sun-drenched Mykonos energy mixed with classic Hamptons polish.

Set on Montauk Highway, Calissa has become known not just for its coastal Greek cuisine and award-winning wine list, but for its effortless ability to bring together food, music, and luxury lifestyle in one inviting setting. On this night, the party flowed inside and out, with live music, flowing drinks, and a crowd that brought the weekend energy early.
The star of the night—besides Ja Rule himself—was the Amber & Opal whiskey collection. With smooth, warm flavor profiles and a striking bottle design, it was easy to see why guests were eager to sample more than one of the specialty cocktails. Ja Rule’s passion behind the brand was clear, and his behind-the-bar charisma sealed the vibe.

The launch also served as a sneak peek of what’s to come at Calissa this season. Starting Memorial Day Weekend, guests can rent Calissa-branded MOKEs—stylish electric beach vehicles—complete with the option for a curated Greek picnic basket. It’s a perfect way to elevate your next beach day in true Calissa fashion.
And the entertainment calendar? Stacked. Guests can look forward to:
Live DJs every weekend (Fridays, Saturdays, and expanded sets on holiday weekends)
Saxophonist-accompanied sets every Saturday
World music Sundays on the Terrace, including standout acts like Cristo and Rafael performing Gipsy Kings tributes on June 29 and July 27, and The Mylos Greek Party Band on July 6 and August 24.
Special July 4th performance from Chase Creighton and Adam Lipson
Full entertainment listings can be found at calissahamptons.com/entertainment.
Whether You Missed It or Want More
If you weren’t able to make it to the June 13th event, Calissa is open all season long—and you can still enjoy Amber & Opal cocktails, weekend parties, and the magic of the Hamptons done right. Dinner reservations are highly recommended and can be made at Calissa’s OpenTable.
Stay tuned for more from @calissahamptons and @amberandopalspirits—this was only the beginning.
NYJL 72nd Annual Winter Ball
The New York Junior League (NYJL) hosted its 72nd Annual Winter Ball, a black-tie event and the organization's greatest fundraiser, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Cipriani South Street, one of Manhattan's most spectacular event locations
The New York Junior League (NYJL) hosted its 72nd Annual Winter Ball, a black-tie event and the organization's greatest fundraiser, on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Cipriani South Street, one of Manhattan's most spectacular event locations. This year's sold-out Winter Ball shattered attendance records and collected more over $700,000, due to generous donors who purchased tickets, corporate sponsorships, individual donations, and participated in a silent and live auction.
This year's Winter Ball celebrated recipients of the NYJL's highest accolades, the Outstanding Sustainer and Outstanding Volunteer Awards, as well as Humanitarian Award recipient Sarah Flint for her philanthropic efforts. Since 1952, the Winter Ball has helped collect critical funding for the NYJL's training and community activities while also bringing together volunteers, family, friends, and supporters for award giving ceremonies.
The evening began with a cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by a delicious three-course dinner, during which attendees watched the awards presentation and live auction. After dinner, guests indulged in sweets before dancing the night away to the strains of Elegant Music Group's The Midnight Project in the gorgeous waterfront backdrop of Cipriani South Street. This year's Winter Ball drew nearly 1,000 guests, including a record number of VIP Harriman Circle clients, to commemorate the NYJL's 123-year history of serving the New York City community.
The NYJL honored recipients of the Outstanding Sustainer and Outstanding Volunteer awards—reserved for women who represent a superior standard of excellence in volunteerism—at Winter Ball. These awards are the organization's highest distinctions. A. Gale Kroeger and Elizabeth Ann Timberman are the 2024 Outstanding Sustainers, and Mona Kelly Lopez, Moriah K. Lutz-Tveite, Susan Timmons Marks, Elizabeth Ann Beller Staryak, and Megan Zuckerman are the 2024 Outstanding Volunteers. These remarkable women are committed to leading by example, helping the communities of New York City and NYJL, and exhibiting the organization's basic principles.
In addition, the NYJL presented a Humanitarian Award to shoe designer Sarah Flint, the creator of her namesake line, in appreciation of her charitable work promoting inclusivity and uplifting women. The Sarah Flint brand will return a portion of its sales proceeds to the NYJL as a way of celebrating this accomplishment.
The dinner reached its climax with renowned auctioneer Sebastian Clarke from Heritage Auctions leading the live auction. Attendees eagerly bid on exclusive experiences and memorabilia, such as "Glamour in Gotham" (a unique Tiffany's flagship experience followed by an evening at The Metropolitan Opera Club), "Toi là! Je t'aime!" (a luxurious week-long stay in St. Barth with WIMCO Villas, Nocturne Luxury Villas Collection), "Luxury Meets the Links" (a stay at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach with a chance to play at The Breakers Palm Beach and The Maidstone Club in East Hampton), and "Paradise Found" (a three-night stay at the Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort in the Bahamas for a family of four). The dinner ended with a captivating performance by violinist Shiann Rose, leading into the Dessert & Dancing segment of the evening.
“The NYJL has made an impact on the New York City community for over 123 years, with our Outstanding Sustainers and Outstanding Volunteers serving as key examples of our organization’s steadfast commitment to training and volunteerism. We are extremely grateful to our generous sponsors, donors, and attendees for supporting Winter Ball and the NYJL,” said NYJL President Serra Eken.
Corporate sponsors included Bloomberg Philanthropies, DíaGen AI, Hellman & Friedman, Merrill, Morgan Stanley, Polestar, Sheffield Haworth, and Solidea Capital. In-kind sponsors included ASD Gems, Beck Bags, Bow Bridge Blooms, Elegant Music Group, Hampton Water, Moët & Chandon, The Ocean Club, a Four Seasons Resort, and WIMCO Villas.
Proceeds from Winter Ball support the NYJL's community and advocacy work and leadership development.

The tasting event honored Chef Luongo's extensive heritage by serving iconic dishes such as focaccia robiola, bistecca alla Fiorentina, and an antipasto misto terra table

At his signature eatery, Morso, legendary chef Pino Luongo hosted “A Celebration of Tuscan Cuisine” last night. The event highlighted Chef Luongo's 40-year history and substantial contributions to the city's cuisine and restaurant sector, in addition to raising money for City Harvest and God's Love We Deliver. Many of the participating chefs, including Rocco DiSpirito, Margherita Aloi, Cesare Casella, Kevin Garcia, Patti Jackson, Maurizio Marfoglia, Soerke Peters, Gianni Scappin, Michael Schlow, Pat Trama, and Ciro Verde, have cooked with or been inspired by Luongo.

The tasting event honored Chef Luongo's extensive heritage by serving iconic dishes such as focaccia robiola, bistecca alla Fiorentina, and an antipasto misto terra table. Guests enjoyed a full bar with specialty Italian cocktails and wines, and danced to the music by renowned D.J. Dipp
In Florence, in his mother's kitchen, Pino Luongo first developed a passion for cooking. He began honing his culinary skills at the age of sixteen while spending the summers working at his uncle's restaurant in Porto Santo Stefano, Tuscany. When Luongo relocated from Florence to New York City in 1980, he pursued his genuine passion—becoming a chef and restaurateur.
Luongo has operated restaurants in New York City for more than 40 years. He opened several highly regarded restaurants since his arrival, including the East Village institution Il Cantinori, Coco Pazzo, Le Madri, Mad 61, and his most recent venture, Coco Shack. With every new restaurant he opened, up to a total of sixteen at one point, he brought a piece of his native Italy to the United States, bringing with him the cuisine, the scenery, the heritage, and the culture of Italy. A mentor and former boss to the late Anthony Bourdain, Luongo is the bestselling author of several books, including A Tuscan in the Kitchen, Fish Talking, and Dirty Dishes: A Story of Passion, Pain, and Pasta.
“Coming to the US from Italy in 1980, I imagined a very modern trattoria serving authentic Tuscan cuisine. I never dreamed I would achieve success and recognition in the business I love so much,” said Chef Pino Luongo. “Throughout the years, I was lucky enough to mentor some of the most talented chefs cooking Italian food today. It gives me tremendous joy to see how many have come together to celebrate my passion for Tuscan cuisine and belief in giving back to the community that has supported me. For me, food, especially Italian food, has always represented a certain love and nurturing that we try to demonstrate in all of my restaurants. By partnering with City Harvest and God’s Love We Deliver for this special evening, I recognize and celebrate the tremendous efforts, love, and nurturing that both have given to many New Yorkers in need. We are so proud to be a part of this milestone evening.”
Proceeds from the event benefited two amazing organizations: God’s Love We Deliver and City Harvest. City Harvest is New York City's largest food rescue organization, assisting in the feeding of millions of low-income New Yorkers. This year, they will rescue 75 million pounds of food and deliver it for free to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, and other community partners throughout the five boroughs. By reducing hunger and malnutrition, God's Love We Deliver seeks to promote the health and wellbeing of men, women, and children who are afflicted with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other major illnesses. They make and distribute wholesome meals for those who are unable to furnish or prepare meals for themselves due to illnesses. To learn more or donate, please visit cityharvest.org and glwd.org
Made in New York Pizza West Village
Last night Made in New York Pizza opened its second location at 561 Hudson Street between Perry and West 11 streets with great fanfare at a party that celebrated NYC. The new location features a robust menu of pizzas in both traditional and square pies and by the slice along an impressive art collection of murals, NFTs and graffiti art that celebrate NYC. It is owned and operated by restaurateur Eytan Sugarman in partnership with Chef Lou Tomczak formerly of Emmy Squared. Sugarman’s partners in the project include Gary Vaynerchuk, Guy Oseary, Ryan Tedder and DJ Clue.
Guests at the party, with beats by DJ Clue, included Broadway power couple Orfeh and Andy Karl and sampled the Made In New York Spicy Pepperoni Square and new specialties such as The Drunken Grandma (grandma style square with fresh mozzarella, vodka sauce, fresh basil), Street Fair Square (sausage, shaved Vidalia onion and chopped cherry pepper), and new Margherita (fresh tomato sauce, pecorino, stracciatella cheese, basil and extra virgin olive oil). New vegan options, made with Violife Cheese were also available and included a cheese pie, a plant based pepperoni pie and a "vegan grandma" with hand crushed plum tomatoes, fresh chopped garlic, and Sicilian Oregano.
Also at the event was renowned Graffiti artist Lord Henry who created a graffiti mural on the restaurant's floor that is reminiscent of 1980’s era street art. Guests also took in several NFT’s from Sugarman’s personal collection including a rare Bored Ape Yacht Club Ape and The Very, Very Very Lucky Black Cat, which are a part of the mural. The “A Love Letter To New York” mural-consisting of a full wall canvas work that encompasses hundreds of images of iconic people, moments, and images of NYC- was also on display for all to see. Images on it include famous sports moments, scenes from movies shot in NYC, NYC iconic artists like Basquiat, Warhol, Keith Haring and LeRoy Neiman.
Made in New York Pizza's new location will be open from 12PM-12AM daily for take out, dine in and and will also deliver. It is at 561 Hudson Between West 11th and Perry.
The State of New York’s Food Trucks
For the city that never sleeps, and is always on the go, it’s no surprise that food trucks in New York City have rivaled even the best brick-and-mortar restaurants. The choices seem limitless with what food trucks now have to offer, from a souvlaki platter with rice to a guava-and-cheese empanada, you know there’s always something that you’ll want from NYC’s meals-on-wheels. Food trucks have now become part of the NYC experience, and have transformed the city’s streets into a lunchtime gathering spot, late night hang-out, and weekend hot-spot.
Starting a food truck business is often seen as a popular choice for aspiring chefs. The mobility of the truck means you can take your “restaurant” anywhere and even cater to events, and the low initial investment needed makes this business even more appealing. However, launching the business involves securing specialty permits, such as health permits, food safety permits, and mobile food vending licenses, with food truck owners having to complete 45 separate government-mandated procedures. It’s this red tape that is often cited as the bane of the would-be food truck owner’s existence. And to add to all of this, New York food truck owners are faced with even more regulations that make it nearly impossible to operate a truck without breaking some sort of law.
Sadly, this year, food truck owners have also been met with an even bigger problem: the pandemic and subsequent quarantine measures. The earlier half of the year has been extremely tough for all types of food businesses, food trucks included. With Gov. Cuomo closing schools and non-essential businesses, and banning non-essential gatherings of any size in March, a lot of food truck owners have been forced to close down. And even those who would like to stay open despite the mandated shutdown, have been left with no choice because of the sudden drop in sales as New Yorkers stay inside.
It doesn’t matter if a food truck is new, old, famous or not, because even the most successful food trucks were being burned by the initial hit of the pandemic. Some food truck businesses took an even bigger hit in the summer, as they heavily relied on working large gatherings such as concerts and festivals to turn a profit.
A lot of food trucks were also shut out of federal coronavirus-related financial relief efforts because many of them are sole proprietors, or due to their status of being undocumented workers. But even with all of these, some food truck owners have decided to help by organizing food donation drives for health care workers and first responders.
Being closed for months has led to bills piling up for a lot of food truck owners. As such, many have chosen to go back out on the streets, even with the risk of the virus. But with fewer people in their usual spots, some have chosen to park inside residential neighborhoods or outside hospitals. While others have striked deals with essential businesses to be able to park in their lots.
Aside from changing venues, food trucks have also taken measures for the safety of their customers and themselves as well. You’ll now see a lot of food trucks using plastic barriers and orange cones to adhere to social distancing protocols. The return of food trucks have been warmly welcomed by locals, as there are now longer socially distanced lines for popular food trucks that are now back in business.

African Community and Conservation Foundation Impact Benefit and Auction
Out of all of the gold-toned prose in Karen Blixan’s acclaimed memoir Out of Africa, there is a single line that stands out more than all the rest: “You know you are truly alive when you’re living among lions.”
It’s a sentence that manages to evoke not only longing -- “When will I get to live among lions?” but also awe --“How lucky is she, to get to live among lions?” Lions, after all, are beautiful and magnificent creatures, and to get to live among them is a rare, one of a kind experience.
Unfortunately, however, our chances of living among the lions today are on the decline. The Colonial Africa of Blixen’s time was only the beginning of a long and terrible chain of events that has forced Africa into its current situation, where rapid industrialization, foreign influence, and climate change pose threats to not only lions, but to all the other wildlife and people living there.
Luckily, however, organizations like The African Community and Conservation Foundation are here to help. Founded in 2018 by the US Charity Friends of Peace Parks, The African Community and Conservation Foundation aims to preserve Africa’s wildlife and support surrounding communities through anti-poaching, community outreach, and conservation programs.
In order to raise some of the funds needed to support the future of these programs, The ACC held an auction at the elusive Chase Contemporary Gallery, where guests dined on hors d'oeuvres from Coco J’adore, enjoyed work from photographer’s Robert Dutesco collection The Wild Horses of Sable Island, and mingled with guests like fashion designer Donna Karan, Victoria Secret Model Sofie Rovenstine and Superbowl champion Justin Tuck.
In between cocktails and a dance performance from modern dance company Jennifer Mueller/The Works, guests were also treated to a speech from Brady Forseth, CEO of the ACCF. Now, I’ve been to my fair share of charity fundraisers, and more often than not, it’s easy to come away feeling as if the event is much more about the guests than the cause. But Forseth’s speech was nothing if not genuine. He spoke openly and directly about the problems facing African communities today, from the social stigma surrounding periods to the still present ritual of Female Genital Mutilation. He elaborated on the necessity of finding a sustainable way for people and wildlife to live together, and emphasized the importance of environmental education and female empowerment. Speaking about such a serious subject to a bunch of half-tipsy New Yorkers is not the easiest task in the world, but Forseth managed to make clear just how much he cared about his work with the ACCF, and how much more he felt could be done to push these communities forward.
So if you’ve ever dreamed about living among the lions, check out the ACCF at their website, https://africanccf.org/about/, their instagram, or even go ahead and make a donation. Every little bit counts!

I Love Panzerotti
At first glance, these turnovers look like calzones -- but don’t be mistaken. These are panzerotti, calzones’ fried and fluffy cousin.
Panzerotti are a street food staple from Apuglia, the southern region of Italy’s “boot.” Just as pizzas are to New York City, panzerotti are to Apuglia. I Love Panzerotti, founded by Angelo Magni and Giovanni Bonati, opened shop in March to share one of Italy’s most loved foods with NYC.
All panzerotti are made fresh with ingredients shipped weekly from Italy. The dough rests for 72 hours before being fried, ensuring each panzerotto is light and fluffy. I Love Panzerotti offers over a dozen filling combinations, from the classic tomato and mozzarella to dessert panzerotti stuffed with ice cream, smores, pistachio, or Nutella. They also have a heart-shaped panzerotto which is perfect for a cheese pull.
Truffle Ham Shrooms
If you like the aroma and umami from truffle, Truffle Ham Shrooms panzerotti is the way to go. The savory ham and juicy mushrooms perfectly balance out the intense truffle.
Pepperoni
If you want something classic, tangy, and meaty, get the Pepperoni. The tomato sauce is delicious and the pepperoni gives the panzerotti a hint of spice.
I Love Panzerotti is located 220 Varick St and will soon have a second location at Gansevoort Market. Visit for some amazing cheese pulls -- and if the food wasn’t enough of a draw for you, I Love Panzerotti is also partnering with Mary’s Meals, an organization to combat world hunger, so every panzerotto sold feeds a child in need.
Arthur Avenue: The Italian-American Experience
A day in New York is, simply, what you make it. An artist at heart? Stop in at MOMA. Or the Met. Only here for the parties? You can dance your heart out way up at The Top of the Standard, or way down at The Village Underground. But if you’re a foodie looking for an authentic culinary experience, there’s only really only one place for you: Arthur Avenue.
Colloquially known as the “Little Italy of the Bronx,” Arthur Avenue has escaped, for the most part, the encroaching gentrification that has plagued much of New York. Here, you’ll find no shortage of businesses that can tout the claim of being “multi-generational,” which makes it unique not only by New York standards (considering the very few businesses that survive a year, let alone generations), but unique from a culinary standpoint. Shaped by both Italian immigrants and their American descendants, the food on Arthur Avenue is one of the few places in the world where you can find food that is authentically Italian American: a little Italian, a little American, and a whole lot of love.
The proof is in the pudding -- or in this case, the cheese; especially if you stop by Joe’s Italian Deli, a casual eatery serving up fresh, hand pulled mozzarella. Their bocconcini, along with a few slices of salty prosciutto, is all but the perfect start to the day -- but I wouldn’t say no to their antipasto, and frankly, their Hitman Hero is mouth-watering. For a tourist, however, the deli can offer something even more delicious -- between the rows of canned tomato sauce and the school kids stopping in for sandwiches, Joe’s happens to be, in my opinion, a rare glimpse into the more local side of Arthur Avenue.
But if you’re more interested in the iconic, there’s plenty of that on the avenue as well, starting with Mario’s Restaurant, one of those aforementioned multi-generational eateries. Known for their red sauce fare, which includes Neapolitan style pizza, house made manicotti, and all types of parmigiana, Mario’s Restaurant is a classic both inside and out, even boasting a cameo in The Sopranos and a name drop in Mario Puzo’s The Godfather.
But perhaps more impressive than the food is the space itself. What started off as a six person pizzeria is now twenty-nine person restaurant accentuated with velvet lined chairs, soft Italian Opera, and warm oil paintings. Mario’s is proof that a little hard work can go a long way, and Regina Migliucci-Delfino, the current, fifth generation owner, is a testament to that -- she is, without so much as a blink, capable of reciting from memory every dish on the menu, as well as its components. Still, the family continues to pay it forward: during Tuesday to Friday dinner hours from now through October, patrons who wish the family well for their 100th year anniversary will receive one free pizza appetizer for that table (with the purchase of an entrée).
If you’re looking for more traditional Italian fare, however (read: No white sauce! No chicken parmesan!), Arthur Ave has its fair share of that as well, most recently MangiPasta, a Naples transplant serving up fresh, ‘choose your own style’ pasta dishes that include Cacio e pepe, Pesto Rigatoni, and a personal favorite: homemade Ravioli with Aglio, Olio e Peperoncino. Under normal circumstances I don’t even like ravioli, but I was sorely tempted to purchase an entire bag of MangiPasta’s to bring home with me. Trust me on this one.
And then, of course, there’s dessert. There are plenty of great options on Arthur Ave, but you can’t go wrong with Egidio Pastry Shop, a landmark bakery vouched for by the The New York Times and enshrined on an October 2018 cover of The New Yorker. The shop offers up tray after tray of Italian cookies and endless variations of biscotti, but locals will point you to the cannolis, all hand rolled and filled to the brim with cream. You might think you won’t have room after a day full of pasta and pastrami -- but don’t worry, you can get some to go.
So if you’re looking to get away from the hub and bub of Manhattan, a day trip to Arthur Avenue might just be the thing for you. In between meals, feel free to stop by the Botanical Gardens, or even check out the Bronx Zoo. Like I said...it’s what you make it.
Escape Virtuality
Anyone who’s ever seen Minority Report knows the coolest part of the entire movie: the VR Room. A futuristic “arcade” where users can experience almost anything they want -- from winning an Oscar to carrying out a murder -- Virtual Reality, or “VR,” is the ultimate form of entertainment...and it’s finally here. Escape Virtuality, an entertainment complex on West 29th Street, is an entire space dedicated exclusively to providing the most incredible interactive experiences in all of New York City.
The first thing you’ll probably notice when entering Escape Virtuality is the giant rock climbing wall. At first glance, it might seem pretty easy -- maybe what, nine feet high? But there’s a catch: the wall is actually a screen, and guests can choose various challenges that will limit where and how they will climb -- meaning at one point, you will be stuck seven feet in the air, listening to people chant your name, and wondering how and earth you are going to squeeze yourself between the virtual barriers without falling on your face. But don’t worry! There’s a mat to catch you if you slip up, and it’s as comfy as can be -- which I can confirm for you myself.
If the rock wall is a little out of your reach, though, there are plenty more activities to choose from. Although I never would have expected it, one of my favorite experiences was a multiplayer shooter game that consisted solely of me running around (virtually) and shooting at another person. It seemed so simple, but something about the 360 view and being locked into a machine made everything seem amazingly real. But if you’re really looking for “realness,” I suggest the XTREMATIC, a “virtual reality simulator extreme machine,” where you can experience “extreme” scenarios such as white water rafting, flying, and my personal favorite -- bungee jumping. You can go in skeptical, but I promise the lurch you feel when the bungee cord springs and you launch into the air is as real as they come.
In addition to augmented reality and virtual reality games, Escape Virtuality has a number of Escape Rooms located on their upper floor. Unfortunately, the rooms were closed on the day I visited, but with puzzles that include a motion stimulated runaway train, a goblin quest, and a mysterious ghost collector… I guess I just have no choice but to go back.

10th Annual Latke Festival
On Monday, December 4th, the highly anticipated 10th Annual Latke Festival returned to NYC. Having consumed lotsa latkes during the festival at the Brooklyn Musuem last night, a panel of 13 judges and 500-plus latke-loving attendees determined the winners of the culinary competition and fundraiser for The Sylvia Center. The judges declared the Hoppin' John Latke, black-eyed peas, rice and potato latke, BBQ brisket, braise collards, crispy onions from Brooklyn’s Benchmark Restaurant their favorite, naming it Best Latke – this is Benchmark’s second consecutive year for that honor, having snagged the Best Latke award at last’s year’s event.
For the two new awards at the 2018 edition of the festival, the judges cited the Falafel Latke from Kulushkat, the Brooklyn-based Middle Eastern eatery as Best Creative Latke and Dima’s Sweet & Savory Short Rib Latke, slow braised short ribs, prune reduction and micro greens from Manhattan’s venerable Veselka got the nod for Best Traditional Latke, its foundation being the 64- year-old Ukrainian restaurant’s traditional homemade latke. In a festival first, Veselka’s entry was a double winner, also named the People’s Choice Best Latke!
One of most deliciously fun and eagerly anticipated events on New York City’s Holiday Season calendar, the Latke Festival – celebrating the scrumptious versatility of the potato pancake – was presented by Great Performances, the highly-acclaimed New York-based catering and events company, as a benefit for The Sylvia Center, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching nutrition and cooking in underserved communities through hands-on experiences on the farm and in the kitchen. The evening showcased 24 latke creations, from the classic to the decadently imaginative, by chefs from such establishments as: Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola; FONDA; FryGuys; Korso; Mama O’s; The Norm; Riss’s Knishes; and White Tiger. See complete list of participants here.
The judging panel of influencers and food experts included: actress Debi Mazar and her celebrity chef husband Gabriele Corcos, hosts of Cooking Channel’s Extra Virgin; Dana Cowin, host of Heritage Radio’s Speaking Broadly (formerly long-time editor of Food & Wine); Alex Mayyasi, editor-in-chief of Gastro Obscura; David Berliner, president and COO of the Brooklyn Musuem; Tine Redwine, host of News12 CT’s “Chef’s Quick Tips;” Lee Schrager, director of the South Beach and New York City Wine & Food Festivals, and Howard Axel, CEO of Four Freedoms Park. The full list of all 13 judges can be seen here.
“We’re so grateful to the participants who brought their culinary creativity to our event. It’s very gratifying all the winners have been long time supporters of the festival and The Sylvia Center. In fact Veselka has been part of the Latke Festival all ten years of its existence,” notes Liz Neumark, the founder and CEO of Great Performances, which produces the event annually, and who also established The Sylvia Center. “It’s so intriguing how different the winning latkes were, demonstrating, once again, the myriad ways chefs can work with potato pancakes.”

The Angel Band Project with Norbert Leo Butz & Friends
On Monday, November 12th, The Angel Band Project hosted back-to-back sold-out concerts, dubbed "An Evening with Norbert Leo Butz & Friends - A Benefit to Support Survivors of Sexual Violence”, at 54 Below. The benefit concerts began with original songs by two-time Tony Winner Norbert Leo Butz and a heartfelt introduction from Law & Order SVU star Mariska Hargitay. Aaron Tveit, Jessie Mueller, Sherie Renee Scott, Lindsay Mendez, Rosanne Cash and John Leventhal also performed with musical direction by Michael Moritz, Jr. The night was sponsored by Rebecca, Hannah and Sarah Gang and White Honey. Survivors Hannah Tombley and Jennifer Hopper graced the stage, using their voices to share their survival stories.
All of the proceeds from the night benefitted The Angel Band Project, which provides music therapy to sexual assault survivors in New York, Seattle and St. Louis. The inspiration for the charity came from an unthinkable tragedy in 2009 in Seattle, WA when a man crept through an open window at the home of Teresa Butz and her partner, Jennifer Hopper raping and stabbing the women, Teresa fought back and according to police, her actions saved Jennifer’s life but cost her her own. After an emotional but musically-uplifting funeral service, lifelong best friends Rachel Ebeling and Jean Purcell got together with the idea of recording a CD in Teresa’s memory. Teresa’s brother Norbert Leo Butz and her surviving partner, Jennifer Hopper, joined their efforts. Their aim was simple: to capture the power in the music they heard to help others heal from the effects of sexual violence. “Take You With Me” was released in 2010 and since that time, the vision has expanded to use music therapy to directly impact the lives of survivors.
In 2014, The Angel Band Project created the groundbreaking music therapy program called Songs of Survival in St. Louis, MO. Where board-certified music therapists work with small groups of survivors as part of their healing process. In late 2016, the program expanded to include Seattle, WA, and in 2017, in collaboration with New York University’s Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy Center, The Angel Band Project began serving survivors of sexual violence in the greater New York City area.
An Evening with Norbert Leo Butz & Friends was the first New York City fundraising effort for The Angel Band Project. All of the artists involved donated their time for this event and proceeds will be used to grow outreach efforts in the New York metro area.
“One in five women will be the victim of a sexual assault in her lifetime,” said Angel Band Project Executive Director and co-founder, Rachel Ebeling. “One of the biggest obstacles that victims of sexual assault encounter in the aftermath of being assaulted is the fear of being judged or not believed. A sense of isolation and blame is very common amongst victims of such violence. The Angel Band Project is here to show support, belief, and community for survivors. Until sexual violence is no longer tolerated, we walk in solidarity with survivors on their journey to healing.”
