Straight Up & Toasted - Featuring Viva La Vida and Craigellachie Scotch
New York is famously known as “the city that never sleeps”. There’s a good reason for that: it is my personal observation that an average New Yorker wakes up at 6 a.m., works well until 1 a.m., has fifteen-minute power lunches, drinks three cups of coffee a day, and runs rather than walks in between destinations. The fast pace of the city makes it easy to get lost in an incessant grind and forget to appreciate the smaller life moments. As I stepped into the dimly lit, smoke-filled Carnegie Club from the bustling streets of New York City, I was transported to a place of respectful indulgence and leisure. Straight Up and Toasted, held at this swanky midtown location, provided liberation from the oftentimes overwhelming New York lifestyle. The black and red striped wallpaper, leather seats, and wood accents provided an elegant, yet comfortable environment to retire to the recesses of artisanal spirits and live jazz performances.

Straight Up and Toasted, hosted by Matthias Clock — founder of Fine Tobacco NYC — celebrated the Viva la Vida cigar crafted by master blender, AJ Fernandez. Clock’s deep passion for cigars stems from their notable ability to bring people of diverse backgrounds together. Billy Fakih of Artesano Del Tobacco explained the chosen name Viva La Vida -- which directly translates to “live life,” -- serves as a reminder to celebrate the daily victories we earn. The all-Nicaraguan tobacco blend gives Viva la Vida a much fuller-body than traditional Dominican cigars. The Habano Oscuro leaf encapsulates the tobacco, yielding a wonderfully balanced flavor profile consisting of dark chocolate, mixed nuts, confectionary spices, and touches of cream.

Viva la Vida was perfectly complemented by the rich and robust flavors found in the Craigellachie’s single malt Scotch. Craigellachie achieves flavors similar to those that would be experienced in liquors produced in the 19th century through the use of oil-fired malt and worm tub condensers.

I bore witness to the amazingly complex social interactions that cigars promoted at the Carnegie Club on Thursday night. As someone who has never smoked a cigar before, I felt a tinge of fear that I would be judged for my inexperience, but the warm and inviting atmosphere greeted me with kindness. I highly encourage everyone with all levels of familiarity with cigars to experience this ritzy ambiance by attending future events!
Orchid Evenings at The New York Botanical Garden
It’s coming up on a year since the theatrical release of Kevin Kwan’s Crazy Rich Asians, but the CRA hype is still going strong. Singapore has leaped about 10 places on everyone’s “must visit” list, and the film’s one of a kind wedding has inspired a barrage of copycats. But perhaps the most cultural of the film’s many threads of influence can be found at the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx. This year, until April 28th, The New York Botanical Gardens will be home to an Orchid Show inspired by the movie’s glamorous setting: Singapore.
Even without all the CRA hype, it makes perfect sense that Singapore would be the inspiration for an Orchid Show. After all, the country is known as the “City in a Garden.” And it’s official flower is an Orchid. It’s a near perfect match.
Still, the process of putting together an Orchid show is no easy one. In order to ensure that the orchids would survive in the chilly March weather, the famed Enid A. Haupt conservatory had to crank up the temperature in order to replicate Singapore’s signature tropical weather. And the orchids themselves had to be flown in from all around the world -- not only from Singapore, but Australia and Madagascar. The amount of planning and planting that goes into organizing a botanical show at the horticultural center of the United States is frankly, astounding.
But, in true NYBG fashion -- and CRA fashion -- everything of course turned out beautiful. In addition to the classic Singaporean supertrees and arches, more than 6,000 orchids were on display in the conservatory -- from the petite “Dancing Lady” orchid, to the vibrant “Vanda Awkafina” orchid, which was named in honor of CRA star Awkafina -- the first time the garden has ever named an orchid after a public figure. The beauty of the exhibit cannot be lost on anyone: on a Saturday night, hundreds of people packed into the gardens, taking picture after picture of the orchids in full bloom.
So, if you’re looking to take a trip to Singapore without dropping a thousand bucks on a flight, take a train uptown to the Gardens. The Orchid Show is currently on display, and will be there until April 28th.
International Beauty Show: When Art & Beauty Meet in NYC
What happens when art, beauty, and the big apple meet? A wonderland is born for all of New York’s makeup, hair, and styling gurus: on March 10-12, 2019, NYC was home to the 17th annual International Beauty Show. It’s no secret that I love fashion and beauty, and I was super excited to see what the city was hiding for me this time. I’ve never been to anything like this before, and I didn’t know what to expect. From CBD-infused beauty, WTF hairstyles, and LED technology for wellness, the show was very much beyond anything I could’ve ever imagined.
When I got in, I took a look across the many signs that filled the HUGE hall, and I read “Hair Section”. I went there first, and found myself walking around many live demos, giveaway shows, hair extensions, and product promotions… But it was the rainbow-bright hair tutorial that directly grabbed my attention. The teacher had a rainbow beard, a rainbow hair, and a rainbow necklace, and he was showing how to do (you’ve guessed it) a rainbow hair tutorial!
I then walked around different stands of multicolored eyeshadows, nail polish, lipsticks, blow-dryers, skincare oils and creams… You name it. Stylish and edgy-looking people (both women and men) were trying makeup testers, putting foundation on, or checking out nail designs…
As I was discovering new beauty products and techniques, a group of models walking around the hall surprised me. They were looking gorgeously unusual: they were transformed into beautiful creatures, and were only wearing makeup on-the NYC way! Amazed, people directly started snapping pictures of the models, as they graciously posed for the many cameras pointed at them.
Then, I strolled around the hall again, and I saw a beautifully-lit stage with people seated, as if waiting for a show to start. Curious to know what was going to happen next, I sat down and waited for the performance too. It turned out to be both a fashion show and a live class workshop with renown New York hair-stylists. I’ve seen and learned so much that day. The International Beauty Show was really a beauty haven, where NYC’s makeup and hair lovers could watch shows, meet artists, learn new skills, and know all about the trendiest products and stylings.
As I walked around for hours, I realized that there was something unique and new on every corner of the exhibition. I was too tired to continue, and there was still so much to see-but I wasn’t sad. The show went on for three days. That way, everyone could experience all of its hidden surprises-and I was not going to miss out on that.
The Brilliance Behind Beauty: BELLA's Influencer Issue Cover Party
In adolescence, Gossip Girl was my absolute favorite TV show. From watching the show I gained a sense that all high society events must be riddled with pettiness and egregious displays of superficiality. Bella’s New York Influencer Issue Cover Party proved that glamorous, affluent events can exist without being shallow.
Christie Brinkley on the cover of Bella Magazine
Bella magazine is a luxury lifestyle publication that celebrates the best of beauty, fashion, and cuisine. Bella’s Influencer Issue Cover Party was a direct reflection of the tasteful elegance captured in their magazines. New York's elite ventured to Bagatelle, a French Bistro in the Meatpacking District, to attend this private affair hosted by supermodel Christie Brinkley.
Pagie DeSorbo on the red carpet
Upon entering the party I immediately noticed the decor. The opulent old-world furnishings juxtaposed with contemporary graffiti art provided a sophisticated yet hip backdrop to this art-chic event.

Laura Kia Chen
The party was buzzing with stylists, photographers, brand ambassadors, and Instagram influencers. As I circulated the room, admiring outfits and making conversation, I began to develop an understanding of what it means to be an influencer. In the broadest sense, an influencer may be defined as a person with the capacity to effect change. Bella Magazine’s interpretation of an influencer is much more nuanced. The guests of Bella Magazine demonstrated a deep social consciousness and recognized their responsibility to use their platform to make a positive impact. The beauty and fashion industries have a long-standing reputation of being frigid and vapid. This could not be further from the truth at Bella Magazine. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming; everyone had a drink in hand and a smile on their face.
Jenna Guarneri, Paula and Mindy Shapiro, Alexandra Anastasio, and Courtenay Hall
In between photo shoots on the red carpet, guests indulged in Plush Vodka or Chinola Liqueur cocktails mixed by resident robot bartender, Barsys. Opposite the bar was a beauty station which featured skincare products by Herla. Herla’s products are of the highest caliber, embracing social responsibility and sustainable development. Her products are made for women by women. Herla has adopted a holistic approach to skincare through developing a harmonious relationship between beauty, self-acceptance, health, and femininity.

Every aspect of the party was a demonstration of extraordinary style. All in all, a wonderful night of beauty, fashion, and fun!

The Chemistry’s Going On: Sushi Lab Review
Located at The Sanctuary Hotel, Sushi Lab is known for its creative spin on traditional sushi. On a breezy Wednesday evening, my friend and I visited Sushi Lab to taste the signature Omakase from Chef Frankie Chen.
When I arrived at the front door, I was amazed by the majestic look of the boutique hotel. There were stairs covered by red velvet carpet, ivory marble columns, and a door decorated with delicate metallic cravings. Even the service oozed luxury -- I was greeted by a host, who led me to the lounge and brought out a glass of sparkling water. While relaxing on the sofa and waiting for my friend, I looked through the menu. In addition to the signature Omakase, Sushi Lab also served hand rolls, Sashimi, Maki, and other Japanese delights. The menu was designed in the way of a lab manual, and it was absolutely innovative and fun to read.
After being seated and choosing our drinks, we officially joined the “lab” with six other “observers”. Chef Chen was there, dissecting fish fillets with his partner. The first dish to arrive was Chef Chen’s unique creation Toro Tartare. Laid on top of a rich portion of avocado and accompanied by nori crackers, the toro was amazingly appetizing.
Then our drinks came to the table. My friend had the Suntory Whisky that reminded him of the movie Lost in Translation, and I had a fruity cocktail that brought me to the island of Hawaii.
The smoked miso soup was served as an unexpected highlight of the dinner. Chef Chen ignited two pieces of charcoals and covered them with beakers. Separated from oxygen, the fire snuffed out, and the beakers were filled with smoke. Then miso soup was poured into the beakers and delivered to us. Materfully infusing the unique aromatic of charcoal and using beakers as the containers, Chef Chen has turned the miso soup into a performative art and an innovative creation.
As I was having the last bite of the hand roll, I realized that we had come to the end of this omakase experiment. It is always a joyful moment to taste omakase. It is delicious, meticulously prepared, creative, and spontaneous. At Sushi Lab, guests won’t know exactly what’s included in Omakase until they experience it. We trust the chef and arrive with expectations. Omakase is an impeccable cuisine and a great performance art, especially here at Sushi Lab.
Brunch at Buenos Aires: Feels Like Argentina
Classic Hollywood star Marlene Dietrich once said: “Latins are tenderly enthusiastic. In Brazil they throw flowers at you. In Argentina they throw themselves.” I have never visited the country, but after trying the authentic Argentinian restaurant, Buenos Aires, I now know how Dietrich felt.
On a sunny winter day, I went to try Buenos Aires’ newly-launched, brunch menu. As soon as I set foot inside, I was teleported to the world of soccer, tango, and steak. As I walked between the rustic brick walls, decorated with soccer jerseys and postcards from Buenos Aires, every single staff member welcomed me with a smile, as they guided me to the brunch area.
Seated in a cozy glassed room, I ordered some Sangria, and started reading the menu: For $35 per person ($25 without alcohol), Buenos Aires offers two main courses, a dessert, two cocktails, as well as coffee or tea. Having a variety of traditional dishes and drinks (like the Argentine Parilla, Chorzio, Chropian, Empanadas, Panqueques de Dulce de Leche, Mate Cocido…), I decided to try the House Salad, the Breaded Prime Veal, and the Caramel Crepe.
The simplicity of the recipes, and the quality of the products, are what make Ismael Alba’s (Buenos Aires’ Chef/Owner) dishes so unique and appetizing: The freshness of the salad’s Mozzarella Di Bufala, the organic eggs topping the delicious, USDA meat, as well as the delightful homemade caramel, were truly delicious. Simple, appetizing, yet consistent- but it is the Argentinian servers’ kindness, warmth, generosity, and humor that elevated the whole experience to another level.
Through his authentic and traditional restaurant, Ismael Alba brought a piece of his native city to New York. He cooked for Meryl Streep, Al Pacino, James Gandolfini, and even Pope Francis. Now it’s time for him to cook for you.
The restaurant is located at 513 East 6th Street, New York, NY 10009
A Feast to Remember at D'Artagnan's Fifth Annual Cassoulet War
At 7 p.m. on February 18th, lovers of French cuisine packed into the Kimpton Hotel Eventi for D’Artagnan’s Fifth Annual Cassoulet War. People circulated around the upscale hotel space to taste thirty competing chefs’ takes on the classic dish cassoulet.
A cassoulet is a French casserole dish whose main components are creamy white beans, various flavorful meats and tasty pork skin. The savory flavor and milky texture of the beans mixed with the sweet, hearty meats make the dish extremely tasty. During the Cassoulet War, each chef’s cassoulet is judged by French chefs who were experts on the dish -- although the job couldn’t have been an easy one -- all of the cassoulets were so delicious, people were often holding two or three cups of cassoulet in their hands while they made their way around to as many chefs as possible.
As attendees mingled through mouthfuls of cassoulet and sips of red wine from the open bar, everyone was jovial throughout the night. D’Artagnan’s Fifth Annual Cassoulet War was a night to remember.

From South of France to NYC: Mamo Restaurant Review
For decades, “Mamo Le Michelangelo” has been France’s “it” restaurant that attracts celebrities like Rihanna, Julia Roberts, and Angelina Jolie, during the Cannes Film Festival. Now, it’s come New York, with all its Mediterranean hospitality and refinement. Mamo, (Mamo Le Michelangelo’s sister restaurant in NYC) is the perfect marriage between contemporary and traditional Italian cuisine. With a single bite, this place brings the warmth of South of France to SoHo-- even in the midst of cold weather.
It was another freezing Manhattan night, and I was hastening towards the restaurant’s small door, to shield myself from the 30-degree weather; and behind Mamo’s entrance, lay a new world of elegance and coziness. Just what I needed!
Welcomed by a lovely hostess on the lower level of the restaurant, I checked my coat and went up a charming staircase, decorated with beautiful hand-painted tiles. My last step led me to an intimate dining room that instantly wowed me with its chicness: The majestically big grey and white marble bar. The large arch. The grey brick-wall. It all comes together to offer the contemporary with the traditional authenticity of Antibes-France.
As I sat at my table waiting for my friend to come, I entertained myself by reading the menu. It was neat, easy-to-read, and had the perfect variety of dishes. For the appetizers, my friend and I first decided to try the Truffle Fries, which were cooked in butter and were absolutely delicious. Then we tried the Mozzarella Roll. The cheese is clearly fresh but comes with a slightly bitter pesto sauce, that might not please all palates. The best part of dinner was, for sure, the main course: The Lobster Ravioli with Caviar. It was masterfully put together with a creamy sauce that melts in the mouth. We shared this Italian wonder with another dish, the New York Steak, which comes with a small pot of baked potatoes. The meat had a golden, thick crust with a perfectly-pink medium-rare center. Simply exquisite!
Yes, we ate a lot, which is why we decided not to order a desert, but the restaurant’s service is simply impeccable. The waiter offered us a tasty vanilla cake, that we ended up devouring. In fact, the servers are so attentive, that they even folded my friend’s table napkin when he went to use the restroom. You get what you pay for, and Moma’s high-end services and gourmet food are definitely worth their prices. As I drank my last sip of Sauvignon Blanc, I realized that it was time for me to don my coat again. Ciao coziness and warmth, and au revoir South of France! It is time for me to face New York’s cold again.
NYC's Night to Dream - Sueños 2019
In 1995, a group of students from Dartmouth went abroad to Carbarete, in the Dominican Republic. Initially, they were planning to volunteer in the local public schools for just a semester; but after experiencing one of the poorest educational systems in Latin America, the volunteers decided to establish the Dream Project, which is committed to bringing positive changes for Dominican children.
Today, this non-profit organization has developed into 27 Dream communities, and it has achieved great success by helping more than 9,000 youth across the country. A large part of this success is attributed to the contributors who make generous donations during events such as the annual Sueños benefit, where 100% of the funds go directly towards the Dream Project to help disadvantaged students in the Dominican Republic.
Sueños, a beautiful Spanish word for dreams, is Dream Project’s most important annual benefit. This year, Sueños 2019 was held at The Mezzanine in Manhattan, where philanthropists, volunteers and celebrities in the US are brought together to support and turn the dreams into reality.
Actor Taye Digg (left) and Chef Kelvin Tasting the Roasted Beef
The event was kicked off with an open bar and the network carpet full of celebrities such as Lenny Santos, Taye Diggs, Dascha Polanco, Brandon Neiderauer, Doug Wimbish, Adriano Espaillat, Albania Rosario, and Chef Kelvin. Some of the guests published their own books for children, and the others are making significant contributions in their own ways.
The venue was warmed up by the Beat Bobby Flay winner Chef Kelvin. He performed a culinary demonstration of Dominican food while telling the story of his first time trying beef tartare. He made everyone laugh, and he enabled the guests to live a moment in the Dominican Republic by bringing its exquisite culinary flavors to New York.
Among all the activities, my favorite was the music performance by the Dream Machata Academy Band formed by students travelling all the way from the Dominican Republic. Although they were not born in a community with the best education system and resources, their passion for learning and advancing was expressed through the beautiful sounds of the instruments, and it was for sure a legendary show not to be missed.
It had been an unparalleled evening for me. Seeing people across the country gather together to discuss and bring positive changes for Dominican children allowed me to see the hope underneath the dilemma. Yes we saw poverty, but this night full of food, music, and culture that made us realize that it was possible and meaningful to help close the cycle of poverty in the Dominican Republic. Personally, I learned that there are many ways to involve ourselves to charity. In addition to donation, there are million other ways to make contributions. We can listen, propose valuable advice, help raise social awareness, or simply dance and laugh with the children.
A Bite of New York - 2019 C-CAP Annual Benefit
Living in New York for 6 years, it’s no surprise that I’ve morphed into one of those jaded, judgy foodies. My daily screen time on Yelp is almost an hour, but I am still having a hard time finding the cuisines that can “wow” me. Isn’t that scary? Well, fortunately and unfortunately, I am definitely not the only New Yorker with the problem of choice paralysis. The good news is, I’ve overcome it, and the magic was done by the C-CAP 2019 Benefit Chefs.
C-CAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Program) is an incubator for future leaders of the culinary and hospitality industry. In short, it brings the best chefs to the world. As a national non-profit organization, C-CAP is committed to educating and guiding underserved high school students to a bright future by awarding $65-million in scholarship money. Honoring Chef Eric Ripert, the co-owner of the Michelin 3-Star Restaurant Le Bernardin, C-CAP held its 2019 Benefit Event at Pier Sixty .
When I opened the door to the event, I was immediately seduced by the unique and powerful aromas of food pervading the air. My first stop was the table prepared by Almond, which served incredibly delicious “Smoked Duck Tacos.” Displayed on a table adorned by sea salt, sage, star anise, and Lonicera maackii that reminded me of the summers in Mexico’s Gulf Coast, the tacos appeared to be exceptionally tempting. After my first bite, I had this strong feeling that my passion for cuisines was coming back.
Don’t think of me as an over-reactor because I was not the only one who exclaimed during the tasting. After I finished my first round, my friend arrived and asked me for recommendations. “Try the squash soup”, I said. He was skeptical, but, I dragged him to the table of Batard, where he ended up satiating himself with the creamy and delicate squash soup mixed with brown butter sabayon and brioche croutons. After one bite, he was on my side.
While sipping the superb Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, We finished the grand tour of cuisines served by 30 of New York’s top chefs including Eric Ripert, Daniel Boulud from Restaurant Daniel, and Marcus Samuelsson from Red Rooster Harlem. During a brief conversation with Chef Samuelsson while having his salmon roll in my mouth, I was impressed by his culinary talent, the local spirit of Harlem, the authenticity and diversity of Red Rooster’s creations, as well as his hospital personality.
Jason (left), Me (middle), and Chef Marcus Samuelsson (right)
After three hours of decadence, my stomach was stuffed with the best comfort food you can find in the city: The Modern’s “White Asparagus with Black Truffles over Creamy Polenta”, Estiatorio Milo’s signature “Lavraki Baked in Sea Salt”, and the “Beef Tenderloin Salad” from Porter House were just some of the dishes I went back for again and again — but no guilt here, because it was all for charity!
Chef Eric Ripert Giving a Speech
The evening featured a live and silent auction, which successfully raised a tremendous amount of funds to support students with educational and career opportunities through the culinary arts. During an interview with current students at C-CAP, they told me that this benefit event was the one of the most important moments in their lives. It not only provided them opportunities to cooperate with and learn from the top chefs in the world, but it also provided them with the financial support that is instrumental to their development.
Near the end of the event, I got myself a glass of Chardonnay and took a seat by the French windows. Sitting in one of the best venues in New York City, smelling the aromatic cuisines, enjoying Hudson River’s picturesque water views and the city lights of New York, I finally got lost in the air of romance.
Sophisticated Weddings - Release Party
I wish planning a wedding could be as easy as it was for Cinderella. Let the fairy godmother design your appearance, and you are ready to outshine everyone else in the ball. Well, it’s a sweet dream, but it is hardly the reality. Planning a wedding is not an easy task. Of course, those glory days are comprised of smiles and sunshines, but they also require a tremendous amount of time and energy. There are decisions to make: your wedding dress, the venue, food, drinks, music, photography, and your hair. At this point, I might have convinced you of hiring a wedding planner for your big day. If not yet, wait till you see the release party of Sophisticated Weddings.
On Valentine’s Eve, Sophisticated Weddings held their magazine release party at the iconic Capitale. The majestic building instantly revived the scene where Cinderella is walking into the royal ball with her glass slippers. Following her steps, you will be able to enjoy the same royal treatment in Capitale’s 15,000-square-foot Grand Ballroom renowned for its lavish decorations. This Roman classic 1895 landmark features tall Corinthian columns, Venetian glass, marble mosaic floors, and a 65-foot coved ceiling. With a modern LED Lighting System that lights up the room in any color scheme, Capitale is a perfect venue for any sophisticated celebrations.
During an exclusive photo shoot & interview with Sophisticated Weddings, recently engaged CBS “S.W.A.T” star David Lim and his gorgeous fiancé (and model) Marketa Kazdova praised Capitale as a perfect location for their wedding shoot. I know the word “perfect” is sort of overused nowadays, but they mean it. In celebration of its latest issue, Sophisticated Weddings’s release party at Capitale is a conclusive proof of the love-birds’ verdicts.
In the ballroom, the air was sweetened up by a wealth of dessert collections. Capitale presented a cookie table, on which the coconut cookies dripped by chocolate sauce completely caught my heart. Another dessert table was served by La Maison du Macaron. The flavor of “Pink Champaign” was definitely the one that could have enchanted your guests and advanced your party.
If you paid enough attention, you would find a mysterious elevator with red velvet curtain attached. Took it to the second floor, and you arrived at the “secret parties” where guests gathered into small groups, having their happy hours, and refreshing themselves from the main ceremony. The Red Room was presented with messages from Babor Spa at The Dominick, and a Tarot Card Readings table hosted by Angela Lucy. The Coffee Bar was filled with the aroma of Cupa Cabana coffee, a live cigar roller from La Casa Grande Cigars, and a six piece Cuban ensemble. Want to taste a freshly-rolled cigar by artisans, have a cup of energizing espresso, immerse yourself in the exotic music, or take a peek at your destiny? This is the space for you.

While I was enjoying a sip from my favorite “Belmont Jewel” cocktail, the “Chandeleria Girls” and the beautiful sound of the electric violin threw me into the scene of “Beauty and the Beast”. Immediately after this transient illusion, a plate of mini smoke salmon cones arrived and led me to another world of fantasy.
As you can see from the lightings, there were two worlds in there. The ballroom at front was a miniature wedding ceremony with its elegance and nobleness, while the one in the back gave you a taste of the “After Party Carnival”. Among all the cuisines, the wedding cake created by My Daughter’s Cake immediately blew my mind. Appropriately infused by Christie Brinkley’s Bellissima Prosecco, the wedding cake delivered a silky texture and the delighting flavor of the sparkling wine simultaneously. Guests ate, drank, chatted, danced, and sang with the DJ. Can you imagine how joyful it was to witness the girls laughing and dancing in their wedding dresses? It made me realize how much women deserve to enjoy their weddings the way their guests do.

It was 10 p.m. After three hours of hilarity, the curtain was ringing down. Every guest left with a Bloomingdale’s “medium brown bag” stuffed with gift cards, chocolate, soap, and of course the latest issue of Sophisticated Weddings. Flipping through the magazine, I got to see the finest venues, planners, photographers, designers, and jewelries in the city, while stretching my horizons further to the traveling options of Uganda, Anguilla, the Bahamas, and more around the globe. This “Wedding Bible” completely opened up my imaginations of my own wedding, and it really boosted my confidence in embracing this magical occasion upon its arrival.

Kill Bar Preview Night - A Quentin Tarantino Themed Pub
Imagine the one place to drink Bloody Brides and SangRitas, bite into your “Kill Bill Burger”, socialize, and watch the screened Death Proof movie, all at once. You’ve guessed it: a Quentin Tarantino themed bar. It’s launch comes at the perfect time, now that the release of his new film, “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” (STARRING LEONARDO DICAPRIO AND BRAD PITT!) is approaching. Filled with a laid-back, positive energy, Kill Bar is a cozy gastro-pub in Williamsburg. Here, you can celebrate some of the greatest films, actors, characters, and one of the most talented movie directors of our time.
When I first stepped foot inside, on a Wednesday night, I didn’t expect to feel so much warmth and care from the staff. Everybody was smiling and considerate. The waiters were attentive. The bartenders were very engaging. The owner was super friendly. The staff was so welcoming, that I didn’t feel like I was surrounded by strangers.
As I was chatting about Tarantino’s famous feet shot, and sipping some of my delicious “Brooklyn Tap Water,” a plate of Buffalo Cauliflower was placed in front of me. “Would you like some?” asked the waiter. I bite into my food and delicious hot flavors explode in my mouth. The chef’s twists to her Tarantino-inspired recipes turn all of her food (including the Pussy Wagon Tacos, the Poppin Bacon-Wrapped Jalapeño, and the Hateful 8 Wings) into an affordable yet unique, and spicy, culinary experience.
After a long day, Kill Bar is the geek-out-on-Tarantino, casual, after-hours spot to chill at. Watch movies, meet other or new fans, have a drink, and eat that Kill Bill Burger, “the cornerstone of any nutritious breakfast”-Pulp Fiction.
Grand Gourmet - The Flavor of Midtown
On Tuesday, February 5th, Cipriani 42nd Street hosted the 2019 Grand Gourmet – The Flavor of Midtown. After a three-year hiatus, this upscale benefit event finally came back to celebrate the Grand Central Partnership's 30th Anniversary, as well as a beautiful and warm evening in NYC's February.
Located in the heart of Manhattan, Cipriani 42nd Street is a tribute to the architecture of masterpiece inspired by the Italian Renaissance, and the perfect venue for sophisticated celebrations. With towering marble columns, soaring ceilings, magnificent inlaid floor, and glorious chandeliers, it is a visual spectacle that never fails in impressing its guests with its pure beauty inherited from the old world.
This year's Grand Gourmet featured 43 upscale restaurants that represented the distinguished flavor of Midtown. Ambling among tables, I got to taste a great variety of cuisines such as the ‘BluePoint Oysters' served by Grand Central Oyster Bar, Pera's signature ‘Fresh Lamb Adana Cut Roll', ‘Black Sesame Waffle Tarts with Tuna Tartare & Spicy Mavo' from The Sea Fire Grill, and ‘Crispy Duck' by Café Centro. The delighting samples were all prepared with fresh ingredients, high quality, aromatic flowers, and creative table settings. After three hours of binge eating, my stomach was contentedly stuffed with the flavor of not only Midtown but also around the globe.
If I am asked to choose one of the highlights of Grand Gourmet, it would be the instant photo booth. The photo booth offered a unique experience where guests could dress up in chef caps and hold the giant forks. Give the camera a big smile, and let's call it a night with happiness.
I walked out of Cipriani with the best cuisine tasting experience I've ever had. Some guests were chatting with their friends and enjoying the breeze outside, having an intermission before going back for the second round. The flavor of Midtown lingered in my mind for the entire week, and I will definitely come back to it very soon, especially when Valentine’s Day is just around the corner.

Destinations in Paradise
If you escaped the NYC winter and ventured into the small venue on Lispenard street on January 26th 2019, you would have been met by a hula girl and surfer dude playing with a beach ball and posing by the front door with warm smiles. A DJ in the corner of the room blasted techno music and a slide show of luxurious homes and beaches played on the back wall as a handful of writers, bloggers and marketing strategists trickled in from the cold. Servers offered juicy fried shrimp and other hors d’oeuvres to the guests. The event had specialty themed cocktails, such as Tropical Rum Punch (Big Island, Hawaii), Premium Margaritas (Cabo San Lucas, Mexico), and locally sourced fine wine from the Mendocino region. And to top it all off, a Photo Booth with fun accessories was available for guests to take silly photos.
The event was hosted by David Appel, Tara Dekel and Owen Cohen as a “coming out party” for their luxury travel company, Destinations in Paradise. The three retired entrepreneurs go to sites in Cabo, Mexico, Big Island, Hawaii, and Mendocino, California and refurbish homes for vacationers to rent out. The sensational villas feature exceptional, modern architectural design and glamorous landscapes for a lifetime getaway.
Their goal is for guests to feel pampered in these upscale homes throughout their stay. What makes this business unique is that these sites are, as Cohen says, “off the books”. They are in private areas that allow guests to have a luxurious experience in solitude and take a break from the outside world. It is for “people who want a little more privacy”, Appel explains. Additionally, several of the homes have special attractions. For example, Appel and Cohen explain, in Cabo they have refurbished a home that is the only place in the area big enough for a 300-person wedding.

Interview with Melissa Stephens, creator of "Finding the Asshole."
The past few years have been...strange. More and more, it seems that the world is just filled with assholes: big assholes, small assholes, tall assholes and tiny assholes. In fact, don’t be surprised if everyone you know -- including yourself -- is actually a bona fide asshole. It’s a theory explored in the short film series “Finding the Asshole” created by Melissa Stephens, who was nice enough to answer some questions about the conception and creation of her project.
1. What was the inspiration behind Finding the Asshole? Did you draw from any specific real life incidents? The inspiration behind Finding The Asshole is probably my and Tom's frustrations with being a human being in the world. It is definitely based off of real life incidents.
2. What did you find to be the most difficult part of production?
Shooting under time constraints with no money….as you do as a indie filmmaker.
3. Which of the three chapters is your favorite, and why?
Chapter One - I love because it came out almost exactly as I had imagined in my head and as a director one shots are my favorite.
Chapter Two - the color palette and costume design are so on point. They elevate the piece and the production. Also it's one of my biggest pet peeves when walking on the sidewalk.
Chapter Three - as a filmmaker was such an undertaking and I am very proud of the finished product and how many things are going on at once and the layers of darkness and comedy. I'm pretty stoked there is a dildo scene with a woman giving it to a man and the dance battle is so good.
I couldn't pick one... sorry. I'm an asshole.
4. What is one thing (although feel free to share more) that you want people to experience while watching your series? Are there certain emotions or realizations you want them to take away from your piece?
You know when it's really late at night and you know you have to be up in the morning but you have some episodes to still watch of your favorite show? It’s the feeling you get when you decide to watch another episode. I want people to feel that...excitement laced with dread. Or uncomfortable joy -- or one of my favorite new sayings: Bats in the Belfry. I don't want people to take away realizations as much as I want people to say... “Yes, this happens to me all the time.” I want to validate the Asshole part of everyone.

Bell Book & Candle

Went here with a small group of friends for a private dinner on Tuesday night. The place could be a bit hard to find. It's in the middle of the street and in a basement, but don’t let the confined entrance waver you from stepping in and having a grand time.
Bell Book & Candle (BB&C) has a snug yet rustic decor. It's an intimate space, dimly lit. After a long day, I especially appreciated the tranquil setting so we didn’t feel like we had to yell to talk to each other.
BB&C revolves around homegrown, organic, sustainable and overall responsible procurement. The menu rotations are seasonal and heavily influenced on creations from the aeroponic roof-top tower garden. Finding muse in the regions of America and focusing on the modern aspect and range of the melting pot, BB&C's food strives for a component of innovation and uniqueness.
Everything on the tasting menu were delectable, cooked just right, and full of flavor. No disappointments! The most outstanding dish, however, was definitely the “crab stuffed Montauk fluke” which came with sautéed spinach lemon seaweed butter sauce. I have now told all my friends about this dish which was the most delicious crab I have ever had. The main dish was the Chicken in a Pot – a whole roasted chicken with potatoes, carrots and chicken gravy. The chicken is served with skin, and is succulent. The rich and juicy gravy was the perfect compliment to the dish.

Drinks were flowing all night. BB&C offers a list of classic American cocktails crafted with seasonal ingredients. The wine list features both American and international selections. Drinks are mostly $15 which is very reasonable for this area and experience. The cocktails are fantastically named and just as delicious. You can taste the careful thought and the personality of the bartender that goes into each drink. There is a great variety, however, I particularly enjoyed “Soup of the day” which was a brilliant concoction with extra dirty martini and house made blue cheese olives. The service was great, everyone was welcoming and worked as a team to make sure all was well taken care of.
This probably will become one of my favorite restaurants in NYC, hands down one of the best in the west village, perfect for a date but also fun for a group dinner. And with the food changing seasonally, there is always a reason to go back.
Bell Book & Candle is located at 141 W 10th Street. or more information or to make your reservation, please visit bbandcnyc.com and call 212.414.2355.

PortuGrill NYC
Stopped by Portugrill last night and WOW is all that I can say. This is hands down the best chicken I've had in the area. The staff was welcoming, warm, and greeted me with a huge smile. The menu had an array of mouthwatering choices such as grilled chicken, churasco (skirt steak), and Portuguese sausage, with great prices to match. You literally cannot go wrong with anything on the menu.
Before my meal, I stopped to ask the warm man behind the counter for recommendations. As it turns out, the man was Al, the owner of Portugrill. Al, who is probably one of the nicest guys you will ever meet, he turned his love for his mother’s Portuguese charcoal broiled chicken into a specialized piri piri chicken dining concept. You can tell he was passionate about the food and the way it’s made - it was a local and refreshing experience.
I went with Al’s recommendation of white meat chicken with sausage and grilled pineapple. The food was beyond good. It almost felt like home cooking because of how fresh and flavorful each bite was.
While there, I took the time to learn about the Portuguese method of cooking chicken. First, the chickens are butterflied and brined overnight. They are put into grill baskets, which rotate over a gas flame and allow the chicken to be slow grilled, while being continuously basted and seasoned with water and piri piri pepper. Then everything comes with the house special green sauce, made with avocado, garlic and yogurt.
Portuguese chicken is unique and hard to get around New York. This new spot is very important to the city and will provide some of the best authentic Portuguese foods you will ever have.
Everything I tried was delectable and the chicken is freshly grilled when you order. The potatoes, lime cilantro quinoa, and black beans were also so good -- basically everything I've tried makes me want to go back, so stop reading and go try it !!!
PortuGrill opened its doors on the Upper East Side on January 9th. PortuGrill serves fresh Perdue chicken and all of the chicken is hormone, antibiotic and blemish free, and all sides are non-GMO, sustainable and locally sourced.
PortuGrill is located at 1215 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY 10028 and will be open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. For further information call (917) 261-4001 or visit www.portugrillnyc.com.
