Dubai is a city that truly needs no introduction. Known for its glitz, glamour, and larger-than-life persona, this vibrant metropolis in the United Arab Emirates is a traveler's paradise. Whether you're looking to explore the city's iconic landmarks, soak up the sun on its pristine beaches, or indulge in some serious retail therapy, Dubai has something for everyone. In this article, we'll take a closer look at some of the top things to do in Dubai and why it's a must-visit destination for any avid traveler. After a 10-day trip to the glorious city, we have compiled a list of the top 10 things you must do in Dubai.

1. Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain Show

Dubai views

Fountain show from the boat

Views from our Hotel

One of the first things that comes to mind when people think of Dubai is the world-famous Burj Khalifa, which stands at a towering height of 828 meters. A visit to the observation deck on the 124th floor is an absolute must for anyone visiting Dubai. From here, you'll get a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire city, as well as the surrounding desert and coastline. We recommend going to the Burj during sunrise to skip the line and the hot afternoon sun.

The Dubai Fountain is a popular attraction located in the heart of Downtown Dubai, right under the iconic Burj Khalifa. The fountain show runs daily, starts in the afternoon, and continues until late evening, with performances every 30 minutes. Watching the Dubai Fountain show is a must-see attraction in Dubai, and it's free of charge. You can view the fountain show from various vantage points around the fountain, or you can book a ticket on a nearby boat tour to get a closer look at the fountain's spectacular display. We highly recommend that you rent a boat. It is an extra-special way to see the fountains! You get a little boat ride around the lake, which provides lots of photo opportunities of the Burj Khalifa. Then, just before the show starts, the boat stops, giving you an amazing view of the show.

2. Dubai Safari

Sandboarding at the desert

Dubai is home to a variety of desert safari experiences that allow visitors to explore the vast expanse of the desert and experience the traditional Bedouin culture. There are several companies that offer desert safari experiences in Dubai, with a range of different activities and packages to choose from.

Typically, a Dubai desert safari experience will involve a 4x4 dune bashing ride, which takes you on a thrilling and bumpy ride through the sand dunes. After the dune bashing, you'll have the opportunity to try sandboarding, which is similar to snowboarding but on the sand dunes. For those seeking a more adventurous experience, you can also book a quad bike or dune buggy ride in the desert, or even try hot air ballooning over the sand dunes.

You'll then be taken to a desert camp, where you can enjoy a traditional Arabic buffet dinner, live entertainment, and activities such as henna painting, camel rides, and falconry demonstrations. There may also be opportunities to dress up in traditional Arabic clothing and take photos. It was one of our best days there.

3. The Palm Jumeirah

Jet Skiing at Burj Al Arab

View from Top of the Palm observation deck

Saffron Buffet at Atlantis

Another must-see landmark in Dubai is the iconic Palm Jumeirah, an artificial island that's shaped like a palm tree. This man-made marvel is home to some of the city's most luxurious hotels and resorts, including the famous Atlantis, The Palm. Visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the boardwalk, relax on one of the island's many private beaches, or enjoy a thrilling waterpark experience at Aquaventure.

We highly recommend you do a jet ski tour around the island. We chose Nemo WaterSports ($150 per hour per jet ski) and had the best time. During our stops, we had full-on photo shoots where our guide took photos and videos of us, which he sent to us when we returned, also complimentary. It was a great way to see the island, especially since I wanted to see Burj Al Arab (7 Star Hotel) up close.

For dinner, we booked a reservation at Saffron Restaurant at Atlantis, The Palm. This was one of the best meals we have eaten in Dubai. There was a wide selection of food, with over 20 live cooking stations. The selection and quality would rival any restaurant in the world. The sushi, Peking duck, and lobster stations were worth the price of admission alone.

4. Global Village

There are ballon vendors everywhere

Drum show in the middle of the square

Pakistan pavilion

Global Village is a seasonal attraction that operates from November to April each year and features pavilions and exhibits from countries around the world. The Global Village is designed to showcase the diversity of cultures and traditions from different countries. It features various pavilions, each representing a specific country or region, which are decorated with traditional architecture, art, and crafts. Visitors can explore these pavilions and experience the food, music, dance, and customs of different countries.

In addition to the cultural exhibits, Dubai Global Village also hosts a variety of entertainment shows, including concerts, street performances, and circus acts. There are also carnival games, amusement rides, and shopping opportunities, with vendors selling products ranging from clothing to handicrafts.

We were pleasantly surprised by how much fun this place was. It was overwhelming in a good way. We walked around for about 5 hours and still did not see half of all the stalls.

5. Miracle Garden

Emirates place covered in flowers

Flower teddy bear

Flower Castle

The Dubai Miracle Garden is a flower garden that opened its doors on Valentine's Day 2013. With over 250 million plants and over 50 million flowers, it is the largest natural flower garden in the world and covers over 72,000 square meters.

The miracle garden is stunning, brimming with vibrant flowers, and generally only accessible in the winter. Huge models of flowery dancing women, castles, penguins, horses, and the Smurfs' town, which seems like it sprang out of a fairy tale, are just a few fantastic additions to the beauty. The size and scale of the gardens are pretty impressive; we loved the flower-covered Emirates airplane and castle. It’s a nice enough place to wander around for a couple of hours and try to go early to avoid the crowds

6. Dubai Mall

Dubai Mall Waterfall

Dubai Mall

Shops at the Souks

For those looking to indulge in some retail therapy, Dubai has no shortage of shopping options. The Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in the world, boasts over 1,200 stores, an indoor theme park, restaurants, and an aquarium with over 33,000 marine animals. Massive would be an understatement. A colossal structure, making it worthy of being right next to the Burj Khalifa. You can't visit the world's tallest building without stepping foot inside the world's largest mall. From upscale dining to quick food, every possible type of cuisine is available. Restaurants can be found both within and outside the mall, where you can take in the scenery and watch the amazing fountain show. It's hard to name a shopping brand that's not present here. But unfortunately, it won't come cheap. Since everything here is of the finest quality, the prices may seem a little over the top. Just know, you'd spend quite a lot if you were planning on going on a shopping spree.

If you're looking for a more traditional shopping experience, head to the bustling souks in the old part of the city, where you'll find a vast array of textiles, spices, and other exotic goods.

7. Expo City Dubai

Mobility Pavilion

Vision Pavilion

Women’s Pavilion

Surreal

The bad news is that most of the pavilions are now closed except for four (Women’s, Sustainability, Mobility, and Vision). The good news is that the four pavilions, along with other attractions, still make Expo City a worthwhile visit. As the exhibition ended in March 2022, the area is essentially deserted, giving you the impression that you have the site to yourself to explore. There are still free buggy rides to go around, which is an amazing service since the whole place is huge. The place is very stunning after dark when it is lit up. You will learn a few things and see some spectacular futuristic marvels on this day trip, which should not be too far from Downtown Dubai.

8. Abu Dhabi Day Trip

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Qasr Al Watan world’s largest chandelier

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

If you have time, we highly recommend going to Abu Dhabi. A day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi is a great way to explore the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. Here are some of the top things to see and do in Abu Dhabi:

  1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque: This stunning mosque is one of the largest in the world and features impressive architecture and design. It's a must-visit attraction in Abu Dhabi.

  2. Emirates Palace: This luxury hotel is a great place to stop for a photo op and to admire the opulent design and architecture.

  3. Qasr Al Watan: This recently opened cultural landmark features a stunning palace and gardens, along with exhibits showcasing the history and heritage of the UAE.

  4. Yas Island: This entertainment district is home to several theme parks, including Ferrari World and Yas Waterworld. It's a great place to spend the day if you're traveling with kids.

  5. Louvre Abu Dhabi: This museum is a must-visit for art lovers, with its impressive collection of art and artifacts from around the world.

To get to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, you can take a taxi or hire a private car, or you can take the bus. Buses depart regularly from the central bus station in Dubai and take about two hours to reach Abu Dhabi. Alternatively, you can take a guided tour that includes transportation and admission to top attractions.

9. Dubai Frame and Museum of Future

Museum of Future

Dubai Frame

View from the Dubai Frame

The Dubai Frame is an iconic structure located in Zabeel Park that offers stunning views of the city's skyline from a height of 150 meters. The structure is shaped like a giant picture frame and provides visitors with panoramic views of Dubai's modern architecture on one side and its older, more traditional neighborhoods on the other. The Dubai Frame also features an interactive exhibition that showcases the city's transformation from a fishing village to a global metropolis.

The Museum of the Future is a cutting-edge institution that explores the latest advancements in science, technology, and innovation. The museum is designed to inspire visitors with futuristic exhibits and interactive displays that demonstrate how emerging technologies are changing the world we live in. Visitors can experience a range of exhibits, including virtual reality experiences, 3D-printed exhibits, and artificial intelligence demonstrations.

Both attractions are located in the Zabeel Park area and can be easily accessed by public transport or taxi. If you're interested in visiting both attractions in one day, you can easily combine them into a single itinerary. Allow at least two hours for a visit to the Dubai Frame and an additional two hours for a visit to the Museum of the Future to fully explore the exhibits and enjoy the experience. On February 21, an exciting press event was held at Lost Spirits, a high-energy cocktail bar with all the glitz of the past and a drink menu inspired by the Prohibition Period and the 1920s, in the Flatiron District. Many media professionals, including food journalists, editors, and other food enthusiasts, enjoyed popular menu items as well as traditional cocktails, wine, beer, and small plates made with locally sourced ingredients (from Union Square Market).

While the kitchen continuously served shareable small foods such Grilled Dry Rub Wings and Crispy Chicken Sliders, guests danced to live music played by guest DJ Greg Grooves in the venue's spacious rear room. During the course of the evening, full-sized dishes such as Mediterranean Dips with hummus, baba ganoush, and red pepper, Loaded Filthy Fries with chicken, bacon, shrimp, pickled onions, and chili remoulade, a Smashed Burger, and more were rushed out. Among the most well-liked Lost Spirits' drinks of the night were the delightful Giggle Water with tequila, pineapple, lime, cassis, and cucumber and the widely demanded Bootleggers Bramble created with vodka, blackberry, lemon, saint. germain, and basil

Tamer Mahmoud, a former director of operations for The L Group, and Ron Rodrigo, owner and CEO of Rated R Management, are the owners of Lost Spirits, which debuted in November 2022. The warm and welcoming venue is furnished with exposed brick, Edison light fixtures hanging over reclaimed wood from high ceilings, leather banquets with giant flat-screen televisions scattered around, and is ideal for a small celebration of 100 guests.

On Saturday, February 11th, the renowned fashion designer Malan Breton presented his Autumn Winter 2023-24 Collection: “Fantôme”. The show was presented by EPN NYFW at the Lemán Ballroom, an elegant venue that glamorously accompanied the collection’s style.

Fashion Designer, Malan Breton (Photo Credit: Rebeca Riofrio)

As a standalone creator, Malan Breton has collected numerous distinctions. “British Vogue” declared him “The Most Influential Designer You’ve Never Heard of”, as one of the more powerful forces of nature in the fashion world. His aesthetic draws from his experiences as a ballet dancer, actor, costumer, and director in film and TV. In 2022, Malan Breton received four honors during Her Majesty the Queen’s 70th Jubilee Celebrations for his work in fashion technology, and philanthropy by the Parliamentary Society of Arts, Fashion, and Sports. Malan Breton is also one of the few international designers with the honor of being invited to privately present his collections to the British Royal Family.

The stunning A/W 2023 collection included compelling outlines and shapes in day, evening, and red-carpet wear, as well as Breton’s famous suiting, which has often been worn by celebrities on their red-carpet appearances. The newest design pieces featured British sartorial tailoring and soft ethereal silhouettes created in silk chiffon, silk brocade, cashmere, wool, angora, and leather.

Breton’s return to the simplicity of fine tailoring, combined with the collection’s sensitive themes of conscience, hope, night, day, and human desire, brought to the audience inspired, eclectic pieces that did not cease to amaze.

The title of the “master of the made-to-measure suit” was not given to Breton by “Fashion United” without reason; the new collection, witnessed in person, made it fully understood! The incorporation of sustainable materials elevated the collection even further; not only for the designer’s notable creativity but also for the message of consciousness it conveyed.

Malan Breton’s A/W 2023 Collection Showing “Fantôme” exhibited a high sense of artistry, style, and elegance that left all present in great admiration and delight.

Wonder Opens First NYC Location in UWS

Wonder brings celebrity chef restaurant concepts conveniently to the UWS.

For those that haven’t heard of Wonder before, it started as culinary concepts from celebrated chefs prepared in mobile restaurants right outside your home. What it has evolved to is making these concepts available for pick-up, dine-in or delivery still within close proximity to ensure the integrity of the dishes.

InvitedNYC was lucky enough to be on site for Wonder’s Sneak Preview leading up to their official launch on February 15th. We were welcomed into a beautifully decorated space with catchy taglines, to try some of the restaurant concepts. Chios Taverna provides authentic Greek cuisine from celebrity chef, Michael Symon. The Mainstay, celebrity chef Marc Murphy’s restaurant, is an American menu with a strong seafood presence. Tejas Barbecue, brings Texas BBQ from owner Scott Moore to the UWS. Barrio Café, a Mexican concept from Chef Silvana Salcido Esparza, is available in NY from Phoeniz, AZ thanks to Wonder. Last but not least, the brick & mortar is also offering up Di Fara Pizza, one of the quintessential pies in NYC.

We were able to try Spicy Feta dip from Michael Symon’s concept, which was creamy and flavorful with pillowy soft pita bread. We snacked on Cocktail Shrimp from the Mainstay with complimentary fresh accoutrements on top. and piping hot Di Fara NY Slices. Tejas offered up Crispy Pork Belly with tangy Carolina Gold Sauce and one of our favorite dishes of the night, the BBQ Pork Rib with Sweet Sauce and Pickles. Do not attempt these without a wet wipe nearby! Our other favorite dish is Marc Murphy’s Lobster Mac & Cheese with huge pieces of lobster and breadcrumbs for crunchy texture. It is not to be missed! Our something sweet to end our meal with were perfect Churros Bites with Dulche de Leche sauce from Barrio Café.

We can’t wait for you to try Wonder for yourself and hear what you think! For more information on how to order these cuisines or one of their many other options, please visit https://www.wonder.com/. And if the UWS isn’t nearby, Wonder is expected to expand to more locations in NY and NJ this year.

Au Za'atar is the LES' Best Not Kept Secret

Au Za’atar, home of the Original Tableside Shawarma®️, serves up authentic Lebanese cuisine in the heart of the Lower East Side.

Au Za’atar sits on Avenue A in one of the busier areas of the Lower East Side and has for the past 9 years. Chef/Owner Tarik Fallous opened the restaurant to introduce diners to the traditional Lebanese family recipes that he grew up with. We showed up to experience the extensive menu at 5pm on a Thursday and you’d think it would be empty that early, but you’d be wrong. The restaurant was already vibrant with patrons and by the time we left an hour later, every seat, including outside was full. This was definitely the “it” place to be at.

When dining at Au Za’atar, starting with the Mezze & Dips Tray for the table is a must. At a time when Mediterranean restaurants with dips are all the rage, Au Za’atar has perfected it. The bundle is served with Hummus, Baba Ghanoush, Tabouli Salad, Arnabeet Bi Tarator, Foul Medamas and Batata Harra.

For beverages, you could go the route of getting their authentic coffee, served in a lush pot, or the cocktail route with their Espresso Martini, which was also very impressive. We were also introduced to a trio of their Manae’esh, baked Lebanese flatbread, served open-faced, like a pizza. The good news? Considering the quantity of food, we were lucky the restaurant provides to-go boxes!

And then we came to the pièce de résistance portion of the evening, the Original Tableside Shawarma®️. Created by Fallous, the Original Tableside Shawarma®️ is not even on the menu, but the secret is out because as you look around, every table has one. The heater is plugged it to keep the meat hot and there’s a half frying pan that keeps the meat separate from the plentiful plate of fries. There is a choice of beef, chicken or lamb, but lamb is what they’re known for, so you go with that. The meat is tender and flavorful, and we used the leftover dips on everything, so the first course served many purposes.

Au Za’atar provides an experience where you are treated like royalty and like you’re the only customer in the restaurant, even though you clearly are not. The food is flavorful and filling, providing the authentic experience Fallous is going for. Au Za’atar also has another location in Midtown (1063 1st Avenue, at 58th Street), which is slated to open its’ indoor space very soon. Do not sleep on this restaurant! For more information and to make a reservation, because you’re going to need it, please visit https://www.auzaatar.com.

Exquisite Tasting Menu at Wicked Jane

Wicked Jane is home to one of the most affordable tasting menus in the city without skimping on quality. Follow along as we personally experience the innovative menu.

Wicked Jane is located on West 8th Street in NYC, home to some of the best food and drink experiences in the city. The lighting in the front of the restaurant sets it apart from its neighbors, creating a sexy ambiance for a cozy dinner. Once you find out that Chef, Zod Arifai, is a retired musician, the cool environment makes sense. What is surprising though is that Arifai has been preparing dinner for a 34-seat restaurant with multiple seatings for 9 months by himself, equipped with only an electric stove!

Arifai is more well- known for his NJ restaurants, (Blu; Next Door, Montclair, NJ; The Duke and Elephant, Bridgewater, NJ; Daryl’s Wine Bar, New Brunswick, NJ), and is the only chef/owner to hold the distinct honor of having two of New Jersey’s top 25 restaurants at the same time, which is clear once you try his dishes. Since it opened at the height of the pandemic, Wicked Jane, Arifai’s first Manhattan restaurant, has gone a little under the radar, but once you taste the food, it is unforgettable.

I started my experience at Wicked Jane with a cocktail, the namesake of the restaurant, The Wicked Jane. Comprised of vodka, hibiscus, Cointreau and citrus, it was a refreshing way to begin my culinary journey. I also knew I was in great hands for the rest of the meal with Sommelier, Alvaro Mondaca. Previously from Gramercy Tavern, Mondaco has a knowledge and joie de vivre that people only aspire to!

Our first course, including two bites, were delicate unexpected concoctions, which rightfully set the bar high for the rest of the meal. Onion Soup with Truffle Custard was a perfect start for the chilly winter night we were there and the Baccala with Yogurt and Red Pepper, doesn’t necessarily sound appetizing, but it was just the right amount of each ingredient where nothing was too overpowering.

We were treated to homemade sourdough, which changed my life and the Ocean Trout, Miso, Scallion and Cabbage course with seafood broth was delicate and flavorful.

The Lamb Belly course is the star of the show, which is why it’s the last savory dish. The combination here, was just art in your mouth. We were also introduced to the wine that changed the course of Mondaco’s career at Gramercy Tavern, which made you feel like you were dining with close friends.

We ended on two delightful sweet notes, the latter being a pumpkin, walnut caramel and fresh cranberry medley of flavors. All unexpected flavor profiles, but all more than welcome. Suffice to say, I left more than satiated and a little tipsy.

The menu changes every few weeks, which keeps diners coming back. I was told the ingredients may change, where most of the composition of the dishes will remain. Wicked Jane is currently offering a 7 Course Tasting Menu ($95), plus optional Wine Pairings (Classic $95/Library Wine $150), which is a steal in the city. To try for yourself (you may see me there as I plan to be a regular!), please make a reservation via RESY.

Primal Fusion at Sapphire 39

Primal Fusion offers the most premium meals along with the best in adult entertainment

Primal Fusion offers the most premium meals along with the best in adult entertainment. The brand-new restaurant features a mirrored rear bar and a dining space with 60 seats. With an emphasis on upgraded steakhouse basics with fresh and seasonal additions, supported by dynamic dishes that step outside of a standard steakhouse menu, this upmarket fusion is suitable for a small gathering or a big group celebration. It was created by consulting chef John Dewine.

John Dewine, a consulting chef, has over two decades of expertise working with international business titans. With the fire in his eyes when he talks about food, his enthusiasm could create a feast. It's a fire that began when he was a teenager working as a dishwasher at an upscale Cleveland restaurant. Before opting to hone his traditional French culinary skills to the standards of Auguste Escoffier, who popularized traditional French cooking techniques by enrolling at Johnson & Wales University, he worked his way up to become a lead cook. Dewine relocated to New York City after receiving his degree and worked as the Chef de Cuisine at PJ Clarke's in Lincoln Center until being appointed as the Executive Chef of Nino's Tuscany, where he developed a reputation for accuracy. Before joining the crew at Noir Supperclub to run its kitchen last year, he established 40 top-notch restaurants in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He is now bringing his skills to Primal Fusion as the consulting chef.

There are many different appetizers available, including "Peel and Eat" Cauliflower, Spicy East Coast Oysters with Szechuan Chili Crunch, Black Vinegar, and Stuffed Chicken Wings topped with Sweet Soy Sauce. Fried Artichokes with a Green Goddess sauce and Crispy Capers are also on the menu. The sushi roll menu has dishes including Crab and Eel Rolls with Avocado and Unagi Aioli, Spicy Tuna Rolls, and Tempura Salmon Cups. Senat Farms Half Chicken with Pomegranate Glaze and Jalapenos, Pasta al Yuzu, Zucchini Cake, or Braised Short Rib with a Gochujang Glaze are a few of the meal choices. In the Chops area of the menu, there are items like the Surf & Turf Platter, which has a 40-ounce Snake River Farms Porterhouse made with 28-day dry-aged American Wagyu, a 16-ounce Filet Mignon with bone-in Australian Wagyu Beef, and a Kurobuta Pork Chop. For sides, diners can select from mouthwatering Purple Sweet Potato Puree, exquisite Roasted Broccoli with a Sweet & Sour Glaze, or Omurice, a dish created of sushi rice, Japanese soft omelet, Spicy Aioli, and Shallots. Dessert options include Strawberry Lemonade Mille Feuille with Lemon Curd, Green Tea Souffle Pancakes with Cinnamon Maple Syrup, and Chocolate Tartine with Peanut Butter Mousse, among others.

AnimeNYC with TurtleMe, creator of The Beginning after the End

Creator of the Tapas series The Beginning After the End, Tae Ha Lee, known as TurtleMe, is an extremely private person, with limited presence on social media and no photos tied to his pseudonym. Luckily, we were able to catch up with the author on everything from his feelings after his face reveal to his favorite anime at this year’s AnimeNYC.

As always, AnimeNYC delivers. Whether you’re a cosplayer, artist, or just an avid reader, the con is the place to be if you’re looking to connect with popular creators through the intimacy of a screening, panel, or good old autograph signing. This year, however, patrons were treated to something a little more intriguing than the average panel: a face reveal by reclusive web novel and comic author TurtleMe.

Creator of the Tapas series The Beginning After the End, Tae Ha Lee, known as TurtleMe,  is an extremely private person, with limited presence on social media and no photos tied to his pseudonym. In return, his fans obsess over even scraps of his personal information. One con attendee, worried TurtleMe’s face wouldn't be photographed, was overheard offering $100 in exchange for a photo. Luckily, we were able to catch up with the author on everything from his feelings after his face reveal to his favorite anime without needing to take such drastic measures.

InvitedNYC: First things first: How was your face reveal?!
TurtleMe: It was…a whirlwind of emotion. I was excited, first of all, but nervous—Tapas planned this huge thing and I didn't think I was worthy of it, but walking out and seeing 400 people was very surreal.

InvitedNYC: It’s been a few years, but congrats on your novel being adapted into a webtoon! What is the process of adapting the novel to webtoon like?
TurtleMe:
It was definitely a learning process. Before I even got to writing the scripts for the storyboard I worked with the editors and the artist in a very much back and forth process where I would give a document with my references and ideas and then they’d give me feedback or vice versa, so there was a lot of communication there….but I think just working as a writer on a webtoon is a great experience because you’re able to see everything come to life and also get the chance to edit the story once more.

InvitedNYC: You are an example of a successful self-published author. Now that you’ve been more traditionally published, how would you compare the two experiences?

TurtleMe: I think I'm a little bit biased, but now that I've been in both realms, I can say that being self-published was a little more freeing since I was able to explore different areas and have my own voice come through without any filter from a bigger company. So in that way—I was able to run a little wild. But the thing about working with editors and a marketing team is that I feel more professional than I was before. I really grew not just as a writer but as a content creator.

InvitedNYC: The Beginning after the End is such a great title. Did you already have the end of the story planned when you published the beginning, or did you figure it out as you wrote?
TurtleMe:  I'd like to say I had everything planned at the start—that makes me sound smart— but I think I had a concept and I knew vaguely the direction I wanted to take the story but that I did not know the ending. It wasn't until I had many chapters written and expanded the world and added characters that I realized I needed a way to keep track of all those moving parts, so that pushed me to plan and outline better to see where things would connect in the past and the future.

InvitedNYC: Which part of writing do you find the hardest? How have you been able to overcome it?
TurtleMe: At first I felt like writing itself—the words, the sentences, dialogue tags—that was the most difficult because I was a beginner writer. Now that that's become a bit more automatic and  instinctual, the bigger hardship is the main story and the side stories….how do I connect these pieces into the overall bigger picture in a way that’s digestible and fun for readers. It’s still something that I’m trying to overcome and I’m hoping that I'll do a good job and get better at that.

InvitedNYC: Do you read reviews of your work?
TurtleMe: Yes. I do. In the beginning I would start reading reviews and but then get tired of hearing all the feedback—even though some were good, human nature is to focus on the bad and that’s what my brain would dwell on—so I would stop myself from reading but then after a bit I would get curious and start reading again, so it was kind of a never ending cycle. But in the end it does really encourage me. Even the criticism has kind of become encouragement to me.

InvitedNYC: The series seems like it’s coming to a close soon. Will your next project continue to expand the TBATE world or will it be an entirely new idea?
TurtleMe:
I still have a few years left of TBATE so at this time my focus is on that, but I do have a few ideas in my head that are running amok. Who knows, maybe I’ll jot them down when I have a break from TBATE, but whether or not they’ll be set in the same world is a secret. Sorry!

Courtesy of Tapas Media

InvitedNYC: If you could be reincarnated into your own novel, which character would you want to be?
TurtleMe:
Oooh…not an elf. I’ve killed a lot of elves. I'm not sure if there's a happy-go-lucky character I could put myself in because as the readers know I’m pretty hard on my characters, so I’ll give the ‘boring’ answer of Arthur. I’ve written about him for so long I feel like I know him and I think it’d be pretty fun.

InvitedNYC:  Since we’re at AnimeNYC, what are some of your favorite anime? Are you reading anything interesting right now?
TurtleMe: The Gundams, Yu Yu Hakusho, Slam Dunk, Full Metal Alchemist…those are the kinds of things I grew up reading. Nowadays my wife and I enjoy Spy x Family together but I have to watch Chainsaw Man by myself because she doesn’t like the gore. On Tapas, I’ve been liking Father, Unrivaled and The Archmage Returns after 4000 years. They’re kind of similar to TBATE thematically since that genre’s become very popular now here in the states, but they’ve stood out to me and I really enjoy them.
